    I keep getting an error message: windows defender error 0x8000106ba. what is that? I am using windows vista home basic. this only came after i installed mcafee virus protection or either windows updates. I dont know but either way I cant get rid of the message. and it will not allow me to access my change start up programs under the control panel.

    Hello lovely2040,

    Thank you for using Microsoft Answers forums.  I suggest you use the system file checker tool.  To use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe).   To do this, follow these steps:

    1.       Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

    2.       Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    sfc /scannow

    The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

    This error is also on my computer.  I tried what you suggested BUT, it found corrupt files but was unable to fix them.

    i have message 0x8000106ba. i did the scf /scannow and got the following mesage windows resource protection found corrupt file but
    was unable to fix some of them.

    i am back were i stated.
