- I did contact mcafee, all they had me do was disable windows defender. when i bought the vista two years ago, i had this problem and they had me do something and they both worked at the same time. I'm so sorry I didn't write it down. this time they had me disable windows defender. i told them that i didn't want to disable it, i wanted they both to work. after the disable he said restart and it will work fine. i replied of course it will, its disabled. IDIOT!
- Hahaha Thanks trudog.
I went even further, I contacted my computer manufacturer Dell and the poor Dell Tech support guy took so long trying to figure this out, somehow he got Windows defender to work . I wish had known all this McAfee issue much earlier because now my system is super slow. - Defender successfully fixed - against McAfee.
Pathway to Success - follow these prompts for Vista!!!!!
go to Control panel-then Administration Tools - Computer Managerment - Service Application - Services - find windows defender in Services you will notice it will be blank or disabled - now you have to high light windows defender, double click and then select automatic, click on the word Start - apply changes and re boot your computer - and we know this works because it took us 4 HOURS to complete and ours works fantastic - good luck !!!!
This should also work with XP - - came up with the same solution then found your thread, could have saved myself a few hours of pain on three differant PCs not very impressed with Mcafee if it causes problems at the very start, anyway well done confirm all working okay
- Thanks Spotted 1 - I also have had the same misfortune - so this has really been a great help to me - you should be working for McAfee - thanks again I will look forward to chatting with you more often -
cheers - - Well done spotted 1!
After a 2 hour period spent messing about I found your solution and it worked a treat.
Mr. Jobo Oh the frustration!!!!
So I tried to do what you said, but after I went into the control panel........I couldn't find the Administration Tools!!!!!
I swear I am not blind, I started opening up all sorts of things and still didn't find it!
Help!
Plus half an hour ago the computer wouldn't let me log in because it said that something was unplugged! Oh the agony! Needless to say I restarted it. As soon as it restarted it shut it self down. Uggggg!
Once it had restarted itself, it once again came up with the error Ox800106ba.
That is when I went looking for help and found all of you.
Please Help, this is truly aggrivating.- Oh !!!! you poor thing !!! well, here is what you should try -
Now - go to Windows Explorer (you will find this in Start down in the left hand corner of your screen - then accessories ) then when it opens up under the word Control Panel (ON LEFT) you will find the word "Administrative Tools" then click on that and the word Computer Management then just follow the prompts in first post but I have just put this in again for you -* Service Application - Services - find windows defender in Services you will notice it will be blank or disabled - now you have to high light windows defender, double click and then select automatic, click on the word Start - apply changes and re boot your computer - *
Let me know if this works for you - good luck - where are you ???? I am in Australia !!! If you're seeing the options like "System and Maintenance", "Users accounts and Family Safety", and so on.. you need to click on "Classic View" on the left on the screen (Under "Control Panel Home"). I hope that helps you if you haven't tried that already!
- Thank you for you help, I found it. xoxoxox
I did have to change my view, then I followed spotted1's advise and all is good now. :) Thanks
- Thanks for your Great solution to this annoying problem
- spotted 1 - Thanks for your help. Didn't have this problem until yesterday when McAfee acted up after one month with new laptop. Installed existing McAfee using the 3rd of three licenses for 2009 product. Finally chatted online with McAfee support and told me to download Security software from website and not use CD. This obviously crapped up Windows products. Your solution OBVIOUSLY better than McAfee, whose instructions were to disable Win Def. I'm done with McAfee as soon as the script expires in September. Your solution took less than a minute to fix problem. Too bad I didn't find it sooner since I've wasted over an hour trying to fix the problem. Yesterday's endeavor was a three hour waste of time. Thanks again.
Hi, thank's for this excellent solution. The McAfee techician told me to disable Win Def, I asked if Windows was aware of this problem he said no! some how I didn't believe him and found your solution it took five minets to fix and works fine!!!
Thank you again for solution excellent excellent!!!- Question... the only big difference I have made .. is I actived defender. I guess before it wasn't. I also was told to use stinger.. which I hadn't down loaded.
It was about the time taht I scanned w/ Stinger that windows defender decided to error.
I think that is the problem. - Hi , just one question are you using McAfee software protection on your computer? Because their seems to be a issue with Defender and McAfee! If so the solution posted by Spotted 1 coul be your answer.
Good luck Hi gaz5
Yes I am on McAfee full softward protection and windows Defender, there does seem to be a conflict with these two - but do what Spotted 1 did and it seems to work out -Cheers
- Hello gaz5

Hi spotted 1,
I went all the way and selected automatic but the start button is grayed out. I cannot click it. Any idea?
Steve- Once you've highlighted 'Windows Defender' before opening it, on the right of my pannel there is a 'more actions' sign. Once clicked try Restart. I only found it after i had successfully accomplished spotted 1s instructions, but it's there to try!
Spotted 1 saved my weekend,
Thanks Soooooo much for the very helpful easy to follow directions to get Windows Defender working after installing McAfee....I un-installed and re-installed thinking it did not installed properly, when this didnt work I thought my weekend would be wasted on the phone searching for tech support.... I did a quick search and after only a few minutes I came across your post, followed directions re started and I was working again......YEAH!

- WOW!!! Thank you spotted 1 to help me solve the problem....Fast and easiest way..=D
Thank God: (For spotted 1)
Your solution was fast and worked like a charm. I wish that I had known that I needed an advanced software degree before
purchasing a computer with Windows Vista installed. For anyone else with this problem, and I'm sure that there's quite a few, make sure you switch to the classic view when you open your control panel. Just follow spotted 1's instructions -success.
You might also discover that this same problem prevents you form viewing or changing your startup programs.
Many,Many Thanks Again.
Somebody please kick McAfee in the ____ for this one!
Dave D.- to spotted 1
Thank you very much!
You like angel, God bless you!
:* :* :* & Big Hugs!!!
Marriam - Thanks worked!!!
Cardsman - This worked great. Took all of 2 min's. THANK YOU
- I followed all the instructions but when I entered "Start", the service tried to start but then gave me the following message:
Error 0x80092003 An Error occurred while reading or writing to a file.
I am using Vista Home Premium 64 bit
Tom I am a 73 year old novice. Last night my power went out and this morning when I booted, I got the 0x800106ba error message. My Help and Support led me to this forum. I had no idea that Defender and McAfee were involved. However I followed your instructions (Spotted 1) and upon changing to the Classic View, corrected the problem. I would not have known where to go without your support. Thank you so much.
- You rock ! I have been wanting to solve this error message, when I purchased a new computer I'm into keeping it clean and free of problems as long as I possibly can . So TY so much for simple & easy info for a mom who's is learning this computer stuff and to avoid the charges to help in these silly errors that freak us all out , I know next time to turn here for great support and helpful advice. Ty again ,Momma mimi
All I can say is: THANKS!!
- Of course McAfee wants you to disable Window defender, then if your McAfee subscription lapses, they can send a broadcast message that your computer is vulnerable and it won't be caught by windows defender. There is no reason why the two programs should not be able to run together, sometimes McAfee doesn't always catch everything. Go figure.
- Hi spotted 1.
First off, I don't even know how I found thhis site. But thank God I did. My problem started when I wnet on vacation for a week. I used my new HP Laptop for my DeLorme GPS System. So, I couldn't get any up-dates. So when I got home, I got an error, that my Macafee wasn't fully protected. So I opened Macafee, and it said it needed attention. I saw the issues, so I hit the FIT-IT. It wouldn't correct the problems. I have ran across this many times over the years. So as far as I knnow, for me anyways, all I can do is to un-install Macafee, then re-install it. That way it corrects any issues. I had to do this when I got home. That is exactely when my error for my Windows Defender started. I believe that Macaffe is the problem, and it started the error code oX800106BA.
But thanks to your information, I was able to correct the problem with your instructions. I only wish I would have found this site days ago. It would have saved me many many hours of grief and fustration. Thanks a Bunch
.
- I think you're wonderful!! It fixed it and I've been messing with this for a couple of days. A quick fix. My many thanks to you.
- Hello, I, like another responder lucked up on this site regarding this problem. I had been told by a friend that McAfee has a history of being troublesome. Hence, I hesitated installing the full security package from them when prompted by my ISP. However, I did and this is when the windows defender problem started. Anywho, to make this msg. short. I've just done what you have suggested and the problem has been cleared after a week of frustration of trying to get rid of this error message. So to join the others in thanking you, I really appreciate your simple solution to this problem. Take care of you and yours.
- well done! at least one is so clever :-),thanks so much-you saved my time.
- Thanks a lot Spotted 1 - u r the only one who knows what you're doing! as has been seen, mcafee doesn't seem to know anything about how to solve the problem right. ur solution worked exactly as stated above. that's all it should take.
- thanks Spotted1. Only came across this problem, having been away on 2 wks holiday. struggling with all the windoows help, but your solution was spot on.
thanks - from Belfast
Do you know how to fix MS Messenger connection problems. Ever since I installed McAfee, an error message keeps coming up " We can't sign you in to MS Messenger. There might be an internet problem " - Thank you! you are a life saver and much more knowledgeable than any dell or microsoft/windows support systems.
- colormefresh: also, just make sure you are logged in as the computer administrator and not just a system user.
- Thank you for this information
