- i am running windows service pack 1 on an e machine (gateway) T5254 model when i start windows explorer my cpu spikes up to a 100 % usage is that common and safe please reply because my computer is my world

Thank you for posting. How long does the CPU usage stay at 100%. It is not out of the ordinary for this to happen for very brief periods (1 or 2 seconds). If the CPU usage is staying at 100% for long periods of time when you do not have resource intensive applications or processes running it can be indicative of a problem. The first thing that comes to mind is malware. If you are even the slightest bit concerned that you could have malware on your system I would read and follow the advice of the Microsoft MVP’s in this thread from the Security and Privacy Forum:
Make sure you run all three scans. Let us know how long your CPU stays spiked at 100% and the results of the scans in your reply.
