I use a program called Update Checker (made by filehippo.com), which looks for software updates. Vista requires authorization to run it. So I would like to authorize it once and then not have to do so each time I start up. Is this possible?

There are a couple of possibilities.  There are utilities that will allow you to run an application as a service, meaning it will run all the time without any interaction, much like your antivirus probably does.  Google for something like run application as service for more info.

Or you can use the Application Compatibility Toolkit to create an 'application fix'.  Then run the application as a scheduled task or in your startup folder.  A good tutorial of the Application Compatibility Toolkit usage is here http://www.vista4beginners.com/Disable-UAC-for-certain-applications

Find the EXE for Update Checker. Right-click on it, and select Properties. Is there a blurb on the bottom saying "This file came from another computer" blah blah, with an Unblock button next to it? Click the Unblock button.
