回答済みProblems with 5/12/09 Update

I have repeatedly tried to install the following updates downloaded by auto update on 5/12
Security Update for Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 (KB957789)
Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB967642)

The updates keep failing giving me only Error code 8007066F Windows Update encountered an unknown error. When I search this error code I find nothing. Do I need to try a different approach to the update? I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

After beating my head against the wall for many hours (days) researching and trying many different things I contacted Microsoft Office support. While it was time consuming, their technical Support resolved the root problem which apparently was problems with the Office installation that would not allow the update. The solution required unistalling all Office applications, doing some clean-up and then re-installing Office. After this was done the updates installed successfully as did Service Pack 2. What was done required a Research Engineer - it was well beyond my capabilities. I am happy to say that the problem is solved and I can't stress enough how much I wish I had just started with this option and saved manny, many hours of time and frustration. The experience with the support person I had - spread out over some time - was outstanding. Save yourself time and headaches - if you can't find information on your error code get help from M/S even if you have to pay for it. If your time is worth anything it is well worth it.

    Hello Diantor,

Thank you for posting.  I've researched your issue and found it to be realated to Background Intelligent Service not working correctly.
I've included a link to the fix for BITS that should allow you to not get the erro anymore and finish installing your updates.

    Zack,
This update is for Windows XP & I'm running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I tried anyway and I received an error about wrong version of windows. By the way, I'm having the same issues with these same updates on my laptop which is running Vista Home Premium. Could it be related to my Internet Security application/settings?

Since this posting I kept searching and found a thread on ensuring BITS is running properly on Vista. This seemed to aimed at problems downloading updates but I went through the steps anyway to be sure that BITS was enabled. Checked for updates again. Same 2 updates. Tried installing them with the same results except the error code was different as follows: Error code 8008008 Windows Update encountered an unknown error. Also it failed almost immediately whereas it previously went as far as saving a restore point and then showing that update 1 of 2 was being installed before I got the update failed message. I guess I've gone backwards.

Bottom line - my problem is in installing the downloaded updates.

All of these are related to the OSE running. When I checked it was set to manual and shown as "Started". No help here. Problem continues. In the meantime I've sucessful installed updates on Windows defender and a HOTFIX for Windows. So not all updates are failing - it seems just these. As i indicated in an earlier post - these are also fialing on my laptop. Both are using AVG Internet security. Could this be a common cause?

Uninstall AVG, reboot your machine and try to update again.
    Your AVG might be conflicting.
    Post back with results

I've not yet tried this but went to the Office Update website and dowloaded 290 MB of SP2 thinking this might be a precursor to installing these latest updates. When I tried to install this I received the following message:

"The detection falied, this can be due to a corrupted installation database." Could this all be related to the same underlying problem of a corrupted file of some sort? Is there a log file that would tell someone something about what is happening?

When I go to the installed updates link on Microsoft Updates I see Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack (SP2) as being installed. However, when I go to Word Options, Resources, About it only shows SP1 as being installed. What gives with this?
