    Although I have administrator rights, I find I cannot change permissions for many systems folders.  I am using the correct method, Properties etc., because they do work for other folders that I have given myself.  Is there another method to do this that I am unaware of, because this does cause me loads of problems and often stops me fixing them because I get the message access denied...

    It's probably not wise to try to arbitrarily change permissions on system folders.  If you explain in greater detail what you're trying to do and why, someone can probably point you in the right direction.

    My most recent problem is that I can't boot my computer up and got from the net a dos script that could fix it.  This was involving the C:\Boot folder which it couldn't find (I assume because it is hidden) and it then needs to delete the BCD file, which I assume it can't because the folder is also read only. I have tried loads of things to fix it that I have got from forums i have searched aswell as posting a couple of times myself, including here yesterday.  There are other things, but I can't really remember specifics about them because not recently.

    I do take care when I do things and do not anything that I don't know about unless it is step by step and with instructions from forums or other sites.

    I did look at that startup repair and it did mention that a dodgy hard disk can cause problems.  I do have an error for a couple of weeks though, although it was a week before windows went.  I di post on another forum yesterday about whether i could copy my entire c:\ drive onto my other disk, format the disk, return data to c: drive and keep my windows as it was.  Somebody did suggest some imaging software, which I am looking at on another tab of this ie!  Lets hope it can help...

    I haven't been able to repair my disk and am trying to copy  my data onto my other disk, but have come up with a problem.  My C  (windows) partition is bigger than my other drive and I can't shrink the C partition so I can copy it to the other disk.  I have looked on the net and somewhere suggested moving the page file file, which I did, but it didn't help.

    Do you know of a way I can shrink my partition - it has 63% free...

    If windows is running (which I thought it wasn't earlier), you can use disk management to resize a partition.  Click the start orb, and in the search field type diskmgmt.msc.  In the graphic on the bottom, right click on the partition that you want to resize and pick "Shrink Volume". 

    Warning: any time modifications are made to partions, there is the potential for things to go very wrong.  Make sure that your important data is backed up before making changes with the built in utilities or any third party utilities!

    I did say on my other post that I reinstalled another windows because I can't be without my computer..   The reason that I have some much work to do (much more than a few hours) because all my hardware drivers and software updates are up to date, I have over 100 programs installed, which are customised, which is why I am trying so hard to fix this problem.

    When I try to shrink the volume it says 0MB is available...
