computer is an emachine, vista, nvidia graphics, 32 bit, 1.0 GB

my daughters computer wouldnt play the sims 3 game so we bought a nvidia card and inserted it to up the graphics(the game would slow and at times actually crash). the game played fine for 3 or 4 days after new card was inserted and next thing you know she would get a blue screen telling her something shut down the computer because something quit working right(I BELIEVE SHE GOT THIS SAME SCREEN ONCE before the card was installed). i went in and tried to repair...the repair was taking forever so i canceled it....BIG MISTAKE because now i cant even get to that point anymore...as far as im getting to now is going through the list of things on the computer where the C prompt comes up and then i see BOOTMGR MISSING PRESS ALT CONTRL AND DELT....I DO this and the computer keeps getting to this point and goes no further....it has been like this for 3 days now and im not getting any help or answers to fix it....i am in desperate need to get it fixed for her so she can continue to use it....if anyone has any help i would so greatly appreciate it but keep in mind you will basically have to walk me through each step fore as you can see i already did a crappy job...thank you heather kazek

Your Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store is missing or corrupt.  That is what the error message is trying to tell you.  You probably have an issue with a video driver, but we'll get to that later.

You need to go back into the Startup Repair and fix the BCD.  For your convenience, a link:

Solution 2 is what you want.

Using the same method as you used for Startup Repair, booting from the installation disc,
    Vista System Recovery Options screen

except, this time you choose Command Prompt.

Read the link that SpiritX provided:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html
that shows you how to start the sequence for booting from the Vista DVD

    The link:
    http://cyberst0rm.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-to-fix-bootmgr-is-missing-in.html
describes how you fix the BCD store.

In your case, Solution 2 is the method you should follow.

    Please keep us informed.

Heatherkazek, thank you for posting to the Microsoft forums.

Now that you have the PC booting again one step we can take to resolve the intermittent lock-ups is to run a "Clean Boot" to see if that resolves the issues you are having.

A "Clean Boot" will allow us to determine if another application/service is causing this instability. Basically a clean boot will do what its name implies, cleanly boot the system running only the core elements of Windows, from that we can determine what application is causing instability. The steps are outlined below, you may also want to consider the PCs internal temperatures, as gaming can cause serious stress on any PC making temperatures higher than normal.

    "Clean Boot"
    Please follow these steps:

How-to run Windows in Selective Startup (Clean Boot)…

    1.     Click Start, click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click System Configuration.

    2.     Click Continue, or provide Administrator credentials if prompted.

    3.     Click the General tab, and click Selective startup.

    4.     Under Selective startup uncheck Load startup items.

    5.     Click the Services tab, check the Hide all Microsoft services box, and then click Disable all.

    6.     Click the Apply, then OK, and then Restart.

After finishing restart, enable half of the services and reboot again to see if the problem returns.  If problems persist, continue to disable services one by one to determine the service causing the problem.

To reenable all, run the "System Configuration Utility" again and select "Normal Startup" from the General tab, Click "OK" then "Restart"

Please let us know if this helps with the issue you are having as we can then proceed with further troubleshooting.

    regards,

    Aaron Barth

ok he just told me that he can get to the screen where it asks you if you want to start up in safe mode. when he selects safe mode it starts to load files but then it stops and does nothing basically locking up while it says "please wait"...thats all that it will do and then he has to start over

    thanks
