    Hi jam2335,

Since after performing all these steps as well we were unable to fix the issue, I would suggest performing an in-place upgrade.

How to Perform an in-place Upgrade

Before you perform an in-place Upgrade follow the steps below:

    1. Disable or uninstall all security software’s on the computer.
    2.  Remove all third party CD and DVD burning software.
    3.  Click on Start, in the start search box type appwiz.cpl and press enter.
    4.  On the left side click on “Turn Windows feature On or Off”.
    5.  Uncheck the following three components and then click on Ok.

    .Net Framework 3.0
    Remote Differential Compression
    Windows DFS Replication Service

    Start the in-place Upgrade.

Steps to perform an in-place upgrade:

    1.  Exit all programs before you upgrade to Windows Vista. These programs include browsers and media players.
    2.  Insert the Windows Vista DVD into the DVD drive.
    3. When the “Install now” screen appears, click on “Install now”.
    4. On “Which type of installation do you want?” screen, click Upgrade and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista.

Once the upgrade is complete, follow the steps as below.

    1. Click on Start, in the start search box type appwiz.cpl and press enter.
    2. On the left side click on “Turn Windows feature On or Off”.
    3. Put a check mark against the following three components and then click on Ok.

    .Net Framework 3.0
    Remote Differential Compression
    Windows DFS Replication Service

Warning: Before you perform an in-place upgrade, you should be prepared for a worst case scenario that results in your existing data on your computer being deleted. This data includes personal data, settings, hardware driver information, and software programs. If a worst case scenario occurs, you may have to reinstall all programs. Make sure that you back up personal data to disks or to other external storage devices before you perform an in-place upgrade.

    Dear Gulrez,

Thank you very much for trying to help. i opened the link you provided and printed for easy access. first step, i tried to enable my windows firewall and disable my norton 360 firewall but update still doesn't work. i also tried to completely disable my norton 360 and nothing happened. i didnt try to do the advance methods recommended that i am afraid i may aggravate the situation. what i see is that, as i have mentioned before, in the network sharing center, there is x between the network and the internet. i will repair the network adapter and there will be connection, after few seconds of trying to check for updates, the connection is lost again so i need to repair the network adapter again and again to connect to the internet. do i have program in my pc that automatically disconnects me from the internet? i also noticed that when i log on to my windows live messenger, my connection to the internet is also unstable, same as i am checking updates.
my windows defender is up to date to the latest update, and the KB articles i installed on my pc are (am sorry i forgot the code) but the program is named "subinacl", kb890830-v2.11, and Windows6.0-KB937287-v2-x86. they (KBs) never helped. i still experience disconnection to the internet by my other windows programs but others are working well, meaning i can browse the internet using my internet explorer 8, but update is not working. this is confusing. pls help.
am looking forward you will help me resolve my problem pretty soon.

    Thanks again and more power.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type https://www.microsoft.com:443, and then click OK.

    Hi jam2335,

You can go ahead and remove the update from "Programs and features" in control panel.
    To remove an update:

    1. Open Programs and Features by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, click Programs, and then clicking Programs and Features.
    2. Select "View installed updates" from the left pane.
    3. Locate the update you want to remove, select it and then click Uninstall

If you don't get the update in the list you may try restoring back the computer to the date when windows update was working fine.

    Running the System Restore utility…

    1.     Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Restore.

    2.     Click Continue or provide Administrator credentials if necessary.

    3.     Click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.

    4.     Select a Date and Time prior to first sign of the issue you’ve described.

    5.     If the date you need is in excess of (5) days click the Show restore points older than 5 days check box.

Important Notice: That System Restore affects Windows system files, programs, and registry settings. It can also make changes to scripts, batch files, and other types of executable files on your computer. Thus, any recently installed programs, updates, or changes to configuration will be lost if you use System Restore. However, make note that System Restore does not affect personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos, so it cannot help you restore a deleted file.

Please Post back and let us know if this resolves the issue or if we need to dig a little deeper.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Gulrez
