If I'm correct in assuming that Vista SP1 is not installed, I'd recommend that you open a free support incident:
Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available at no charge through (but only through) 18 Mar-09.

- Hi duke,
You could try booting your system in to Safe Mode and see if it will install the update from there. While your notebook is booting up press the F8 key on your keyboard to get into Advanced Boot Options menu. In the Advanced Boot Options menu select Safe Mode and press Enter. Your notebook will now boot into Safe Mode using only the core drivers and services, hopefully allowing Windows Update to complete the install of the Update you are having issues with. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you.

- if you cannot get out of that situation.. leave your computer like that for a while.. if its a major update it might take time.. else boot from your DVD and try restoring to just before you installed the update..

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista:

Tip: Scroll down to bottom of page to the section How to avoid this problem & follow the instructions. SAVE the download to your desktop, do not RUN it. To install, right-click on the saved download and select Run as Administrator.
