The error code 0x80070005 is also described as ACCESS DENIED.

Please follow these instructions if you are encountering this error code when checking or installing updates via Windows Udpate. The following is only applicable to Windows Vista.

1. Download AccessChk (Sysinternals). This tool allows you to evaluate the access level of specific users or groups of resources including files, directories, Registry keys, global objects and Windows services. Here's the link to download the tool: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb664922.aspx

2. Save the zip file on your desktop, and extract the file:
- Right click on the file, and select Extract All...
- Click Next when prompted for the Destination.

As a result, you should see a folder called AccessChk on your desktop.

3. Open the folder AccessChk

4. Hold the shift-key and right click in the window. Select "Open Command Prompt Here"

5. A command prompt window should open with a similar prompt:
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Desktop\accesschk>

6. Type the following command, and press Enter:
accesschk.exe -s -n "nt service\trustedinstaller" -k "hklm\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing" >accesskchk.txt
Tip: You should be able to copy and paste the command into the command prompt.

7. Close the Command Prompt Window. Open the Accesschk folder on yoru desktop (if it has been closed).

8. Double click on Accesschk.txt (the text file), this should open Notepad.

9. Copy and Paste your results with a new question on the Windows Update forum. (Make sure you write 0x80070005 in the subject line).

Hey loudog_jon,

The command line should be correct. Perhaps a typo?
Which of the two commands did you encounter the error?

It might help if you took a screenshot. Windows Vista comes with a tool that allows you to take a screenshot:
1. Click Start
2. Type "Snippet" in the search box
3. The Snippet Tool should be listed in the search result, then you can click on it to launch

You can also use the Live Skydrive to save the screenshot so that it can be shared. Here's the link: http://skydrive.live.com/

Hi Kim,

I have been having problems with my Windows Update since I restored my computer to a restore point in April. It would not install the Internet Explorer 8 update and has since not updated any other updates at all as far as I can tell. I started following the various troubleshooting steps including deleting the contents of DataStore and Download in the SoftwareDistribution Folder and starting and stopping the update services. I also ran the System Update Readiness Tool manually more than once. At this point I am receiving the 80070005 error when I try to update. I have given full permissions to the DataStore and Download folders, but I am concerned that I may have messed something up when I was trying the troubleshooting steps. I ran the Accesschk and the accesschk.txt file is 5318 lines, which will not fit a forum post. Below is the first bit of the file. Is it normal to have 5318 lines of permissions?? Thanks for your help in advance.

Here is what they said to do:

The error code 80070005 usually means that you do not have enough permission to install updates.

First please confirm you have logged on an account with administrative privileges.

If the issue still occurs, lets’ try the following method to reset the permissions:

1. Download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the installation patch onto the Desktop:

2. Go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file.

3. Select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission settings on the current machine.

Note: If the UAC (User Account Control) window is prompted for permission to continue, please click Continue.

4. Click Start, in the Start Search bar, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.

5. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the open Notepad window:

7. Refer to the Desktop and right click the reset.bat file, and then choose "Run as administrator."

8. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

Note: It may take several minutes. Please be patient. When it is completed, you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue".

Try to install the updates again.

This issue can be also caused by third-party security programs such as firewalls and anti-virus software. You can disable or remove them to check the issue.

Hi to everyone,

All this is so very interesting but, will it ever ends? I've red this entire thread and i've been experiencing a little bit of everything too as u can see in my threads above:

This has been very enriching for me but also very exhausting and time consuming, anyway, could anyone explain me why am i getting the "Access denied" message when i try to open the cbs.log file now, after sp1 installation, and before the sp1 everything was fine.

After running sfc/verifyonly, it reports integrity violations so i ran sfc/scannow, it reports sucessfull repair of damaged files, ok fine so i thought. After restarting the computer i ran sfc/verifyonly to confirm that everything was in fact ok, well guess what integrity violations found, oh that's right i always run a chkdsk too and nothing's wrong with this one.

Last time i tried to start the computer in safe mode and the funny thing is that in safe mode i can open the cbs.log file, and to tell u the truth really i don't know why i keep on cheking that file because i feel like a donkey looking to a palace, i know that it has a lot of information i just don't know what to do with it.

Please can anybody help me out with this? Thanks for all the help available...

Thank u SpiritX for your reply, i think u replied my previous post here, but even if it isn't the case thanks anyway, all the help is welcome.

Well i have to confess that all of this is indeed very interesting but i´m light years from truly understand these computer things, so i really have to go very slow on this to, at the minimum, chew them before i can digest them, all this ____ talk to say that i had to read again, several times, what u suggested, in general i think i have the picture, offcourse there is always some things, here and there, i guess mere technical concepts that i don't know them, things like (u'll probaly be laughing now) what's a [SR] tag. For u probably thats just trivial for me it just interrupts the entire context of the reading because simply i don´t know what it is, but like i said in general i think i´ve got the picture, about the parts where it is ok and when it is corrupted, i guess.

Try running checkdisk - schedule it to run at next start and then Apply OK your way out then restart.

Unable to find the <open command prompt here>. So i opened the command prompt there msg says<'accesschk.exe' isnot recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file.>
Steps 2-5 never appeared as you show above? Fix is? eror code 0x80070005 VISTA 32.

This is a very tough one to solve. What are the KB articles if any shown as not installing?

Those are sort of prerequisites and probably will not solve the issue.

Antivirus/antispyware/security products are a known cause so you might want to disable them as
as test (and that sometimes does not really totally remove their influence).
