hi just clicked on the link to try coz im having problems like that too and my internet explorer saying the page cannot be displayed! its one problem after another with PC's! lol
You can access the Knowledge Base article here: How do I reset Windows Update components
Suggest you *save* ResetWindows.msi.
When the download completes close Internet Explorer and any other open programs.
Now run ResetWindows.msi and use the Default option first.
If Default does not resolve the updating issue, run it again in the Aggressive mode.
The system must be connected to the internet in order for the tool to download and install required software update components.
Some antivirus programs and security suites can interfere with the operation so, it would be best to Clean Boot Vista [ use Step 1 ], ensure that the native firewall is Enabled, and then run ResetWindows.msi.
Restart the system afterwards and see if the system can update now.

- hey, i tried it and it didnt work :( dunno what to do!
- Did you try the Agressive mode ?
Run the System Update Readiness Tool [CheckSUR]
Be sure to click the link for the edition of Vista that is installed, either x86 [32bit] or x64 [64bit]
Then try another update attempt.
If updating still fails, please post:
1) The CheckSUR and CheckSUR.persist logs, located at
WINDOWS\Logs\CBS
2) At least the last 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log

- hi, so i need to download the windows 7 one not the vista one? and where do i find the last line of the wondows update? do i have to go into start and type something? sorry its been awhile since i've used a PC, only had a PC laptop for about 2years ago now and i can't remember half of what to do with then as i'm used to a MAC! lol sorry to sound dumb! thanks

- Oops. Sorry about that. Was posting in the Win7 forum at the same time. The links go to the release of CheckSUR for Vista now.
The WindowsUpdate.log is located in WINDOWS. Click the WindowsUpdate.log link I provided to see where it's located and what it contains.
We need to see at least the last 50 or so lines of the WU.log after you've made another update attempt, hellandbliss.
The most recent entries are the ones at the bottom of the log.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security - hi, i can't download the checkSUR for vista, when i click the download and it brings up a seprate window it says internet explorer cannot display :S i'm having that problem with msn at the moment, like you know now you can join people's next works, well when i click on the link for it like it says so and so wants to join your next work click to accept it brings up internet explorer cannot display this page as well. i'm going to do the last bit now.

hi, i've tried to download this before as someone told me to try it but i can't becuase it says that internet explorer cannot display the page
Tried to download what, the MSRT ? If IE can't download it then that's a sure sign that the system is infected.
See if there are any entries in the hosts file that are blocking downloads from security-related sites.
Hosts is located in WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc
Double left click on hosts and open it with Notepad.
If no sites have been added to the hosts file, then the last line should be
::1 localhost
IF you see any entries that show microsoft.com and malwarebytes.org that look like these
127.0.0.1 microsoft.com
127.0.0.1 update.microsoft.com
127.0.0.1 download.microsoft.com
127.0.0.1 download.windowsupdate.com
127.0.0.1 malwarebytes.org
delete them. Close the hosts file by clicking File, then Save.
Now see if IE can reach http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
If it can, than download, install, update, and then run Malwarebyte's Anti-malware.
Be sure to click the Download free version button.
Do the Quick Scan first [ the Default scan option ]
Could you do the above ?

- ya i think so. how do i get to them to check?
hey, if i've done it right then this is what came up in notepad without me deleting anything. i did a search in system 32 and it came up with hosts and i double clicked and opened with notepad and got this
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost- so if thats the sample how do i get to the original :S
so if thats the sample how do i get to the original :S
That is the original. Don't go by the verbiage.
Can the system access MalwareBytes.org ?
Is the system networked via a router ?
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security- hey, no i can't get on that site, it brings up internet explorer saying it cannot display, and u mean my internet? yes it's a router and it's wireless and i'm using a laptop and my internet is virgin.
- You will need to disconnect the wireless connection to the router and use an ethernet cable to attach the laptop directly to the modem. What you are dealing with is known as a DNSChanger/DNShijacker .
Once the system is connected directly to the modem, open an Elevated Command Prompt by clicking the Start orb, in the Start Search field type in cmd
Right click cmd.exe and choose "Run as administrator", follow the prompts.
At the Elevated Command Prompt, type in the following, pressing Enter after each command
ipconfig /flushdns
exit
Now see if you can download Malware Bytes Anti-Malware from this link
IF you can, then try to install MBAM. If it can not be installed, then try changing it's name to Dirt.exe or anything you'd like, as long as the .exe extension is not altered.
During the installation of MBAM allow it to update by making sure that a checkmark is present next to 'Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware '.
Once it's updated, boot to Safe Mode and do a Quick Scan of the system with MBAM, allowing it to remove whatever it detects.
A restart may be needed. If so, then restart the system to normal Windows mode.
Once in normal Windows mode, with the system still directly connected to the modem, see if you can download and run the Malicious Software Removal Tool
IF you can do both of the above, then at least you've gained a foothold to battle the infection.
The next step would be to post to a reputable anti-malware forum for further assistance.
Please keep us posted as to your progress.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security- Edited byMowGreenMVPMonday, June 01, 2009 9:13 PM
- hey what is a DNSchanger?
- A Trojan . Frankly speaking, cleaning up this malware requires advanced technical knowledge.
Either consult with someone who's cleaned this malware previously or bring the system to a reputable tech service.
If there's no one to assist you or a tech service is too expensive, then your best bet is to format the Hard Drive and reinstall Vista. The router needs cleaning up, too.
But, the question remains, how did the system get infected in the first place ?
Not keeping the system up to date with Security updates; not keeping the Java Runtime updated; not keeping all program, browsers, and applications updated, etc, will lead to these type of infections.
Since I don't have access to the system's logs, I can't tell how the system was infected.
Do you recall when the infections symptoms first happened and what you were doing at the time ?
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security - oh :S this is why i like MAC's! lol no infections! lol
how do i clean up my router?
i can reinstall vista as i have the backup disks to reinstall. when i put them in what do i need to do to wipe it and reinstall? i can't remember coz i did it before co i thought my bluetooth wasnt working when it was but i had the wireless bit off and didnt look! lol also how do i format the hard drive?
i think i might know what it was, something called yantoo or something like that, i installed and i think thats when it started!
so what is the best thing to do? should i reinstall vista? but how do i clean my router as well? will anti-virus software and that not pick that up?
how is this trojan affecting me? what is it doing to the laptop? what info is it getting too? - " how do i clean up my router? "
Reset the router according to the manufacturer's directions. Then unplug it and wait at least 15 minutes.
Plug it back in again and reset it once more .
" oh :S this is why i like MAC's! lol no infections! lol "
When enough people are using Macs, then the criminals will come after them, too. Don't be fooled by Apple's ridiculous assertion that Macs are more secure than Windows.
ANY system connected to the net CAN be owned by someone who has patience and a little smarts.
" i can reinstall vista as i have the backup disks to reinstall. when i put them in what do i need to do to wipe it and reinstall? "
Configure the BIOS to boot from the DVD player; insert the Vista DVD, and boot the system.
Choose the Install option. When you're asked which partition to install to, pick the one that Vista is installed to and choose to Format it first.
Do the Full option, not the Quick option.
How to install Windows Vista
" will anti-virus software and that not pick that up?
how is this trojan affecting me? what is it doing to the laptop? what info is it getting too? "
Only if the AV is kept up to date with it's latest definitions and is used to scan the system once in awhile.
And, only IF that AV is worth installing in the first place. Unfortunately, computer manufacturer's tend to install AVs when they get a kick back for doing so from the company that is selling the AV.
Avoid Norton and McAfee 'products' as though they were the plague.
2 worthwhile free AVs are Avast and Antivir.
You're seeing the affects of the trojan, right ? The system can not access sites you are trying to navigate to.
I certainly hope you're not submitting any personal info via this laptop ... nor doing any online financial transactions.
Who knows what information the Trojan is sending out that you've stored on the laptop ... only you know what you've stored on it.
It may be sending out spam, it may be sending out Phish emails , or,even be a part of a botnet .
To put it as simply as possible ... the laptop now belongs to someone other than you.
When should I format ? How should I reinstall ?
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security - hi, thanks for all the help! what is BIOS?
I had norton before :S but now i have what you get free with virgin and i think its the other one you said :S i can't have any other programs running with it as it wont let me as when my norton nearly ran out i install a new one (free one) and then i had to remove it when i installed the one that came with virgin as it wouldnt let them both run!
The virgin one updates regularly all the time but i do think its that program i said to you before as i had to give permission to let it through and that and i'm sure that's when it all started.
Not doing any banking or anything. really the only things is MSN, facebook and browsing nothing else really. Does that mean they have my passwords?
Do i need to format or can i just reinstall vista? - hi, just want to let you know that i've rebooted my router (virgin said i just had to turn it off at the plug for 15 sec's and then back on and it was wiped) and i've reinstalled vista and my updates are working :) thank you for all your help! the anti-virus software i've got is pc-total guard. hope that's a good one!
thanks again! - Here's a recent review of antivirus software
AntiVir [Avira], which is free, tops the list, along with Kaspersky and Microsoft, which are not free.
I see nothing about PC-Total Guard, but it may be known by another name in it's paid version.
My opinion as to an AV's worth does not matter as long as it protects the OS without causing performance issues.
IF PC-Total Guard was installed when the trojan infested the system, then it's worth it's cost ... nothing .
A worthwhile AV will at least notify about potential threats when you attempt to install 'questionable' software.
" Not doing any banking or anything. really the only things is MSN, facebook and browsing nothing else really. Does that mean they have my passwords? "
If I were you I'd change the passwords for MSN and Facebook. It's better to be safe than sorry and it's a trivial matter to change them.
Does the wireless router have a hardware firewall built in ? Check the manufacturer's User Guide or web site to see if it does.
Did you change the Username and Password when the wireless network was set up ?
Leaving the Default Username and Password as they are is not recommended as one can look them up on the net, if one chooses to.
Pick a secure password ... one that contains Capital letters, numbers, and characters and is at least 8 letters/characters long.
" thanks again! "
You're mowst welcome.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security - It worked ..after googling for a week ultimately landed to this forum.it was one click only . got 80072efd error for days .
just download and install , system restarts and it worked ..
- All well and good, but what about when BITS service is missing?
All well and good, but what about when BITS service is missing?
Have you seen How do I reset Windows Update components yet ?
It will attempt a registering of the BITS-related .dlls when run in Default mode after deleting the BITS .dat file.
I'm not certain, but in it's Aggressive mode, the tool *should* be downloading the BITS-related files, reinstall, and register them.
As it does with the Windows Update Agent.
That's just an assumption on my part so I 'll ask someone who had a hand in developing ResetWindows.msi.
UPDATE : BITS components are not installed when running ResetWindows.msi in it's Aggressive mode.
The Windows Update Agent is installed in the Default mode.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security- I've used both fix its you have linked in this thread (got the fix it main page bookmarked lol) and neither one has helped with the 80072 EFD error I'm trying to fix on two different computers, one a friends, and the other at a different forum, and before you ask, yes lol, I've read and done, this and this as well. One computer is certifiably malware free while I'm fairly certain the second one is infected (he can't get office or Vista SP2 to install either). I've also done the system update readiness tool and installer 4.5 on both machines as well. Anything else I might be able to try other than teaching said machine to fly (ie, tossing them out a window lol)?
EDIT: Used both the passive and the aggressive methods for the reset Windows Update components.
- Did you go over the CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log of the Vista system after running the System Update Readiness Tool [CheckSUR] ? They're located in WINDOWS\Logs\CBS
Are both systems running Vista ?
What is the installed antivirus/security suite on these systems ?
Is a 3rd party firewall used or the native Vista firewall ?
Have you tried Clean booting the systems and then run the Fixit to rule out interference by 3rd party software ?

MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security I had not been able to get any updates. My computer is a Dell 1720 Inspiron with Vista Home Premium. I tried this "fix it" and it seems to have worked some. I have my computer set to auto check for updates. But it still says that I have updates to install. When I click to install it takes hours. The windows update window still says that the most recent check for updates was 11/13/2008. But it also says updates were installed. The following update for Windows Vista failed but then a couple of minutes later it was successful.
The last update "Microsoft .NET framework" shown has always failed. Is this a problem?

http://support.microsoft.com- First off Mow, thank you for your help.
My answers are based on the first computer I was dealing with. The guy from the second computer is probably no more a concern of mine. I was originally helping him get the Enterprise version of Office 2007 to install correctly, but he has been evasive in answers to several important questions (mainly where he got it, key code, ect) and I am beginning to think he has either a cracked copy or or is using some other method to steal the software. I don't steal and I won't help other to steal. I have steered him to a part of the website I'm helping him at populated by UNITE and ASAP certified malware experts to clean his computer of said malware. I'm still learning malware and am not qualified to clean any computer but my own, but I know enough to look at his logs for the info I want for evidence of stealing. So do they. If he's stealing, they will get him clean, remove his P2p and send him on his way with his stolen software uninstalled and a warning that they will NOT help him get rid of malware if he comes back with his P2P software theft program on his computer.
Did you go over the CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log of the Vista system after running the System Update Readiness Tool [CheckSUR]? They're located in WINDOWS\Logs\CBS
The SUR tool did not install with a message it was not needed so I assume it left no CheckSur.log or persist.log. If I am wrong, let me know and I will go to my friends house and take a look at it. If so what am I looking for?
Are both systems running Vista ?
yes, 32 bit.
What is the installed antivirus/security suite on these systems ?
The first computer had that 90 trial version of Norton Security 2008 that Acer bundles along with other assorted crapware on their machines. By the time I got to the machine, it had long expired and the definition data base was out dated. I removed it with the Norton Removal Tool (NRT). I had to use it twice and didn't get the last bits off until we nuked them with ComboFix. After the computer was clean I installed Avast! (free edition), Spybot, SAS, Winpatrol and MBRAM. All were disabled during any attempts to fix the 80072efd problem.
Is a 3rd party firewall used or the native Vista firewall ?
As I stated above he originally had Norton on but I removed it now it is the native Vista firewall. We disabled it, updated it removed it, re installed it, checked the oil and rotated the tires on it. Seriously, I can't remember all the steps I took on the MS firewall, but I can go back to the threads I requested help on and check if you need to know. I remember we changed the values so it wouldn't start (using Combofix) and I had to go to a KB (I forget which one but again I can find out) to reset the firewall and get it working again.
Have you tried Clean booting the systems and then run the Fixit to rule out interference by 3rd party software ?
It never occured to me to do so as I had the anti malware, AV and firewall turned off. I didn't think more than briefly in terms of other programs. The update history showed the specific date ( around May 17th I believe) when it quit working. I had set it for him to automatic when I set his computer up for him. On checking the OTList It log I was able to see what folders and files were changed/added between the time of his last successful update and his first unsuccessful one. I think that all that was there was the adware/spyware (the spyware they ad to that stupid coupon download crapware) and the accompanying browser jacker that I had removed iTunes software. Are there known issues with iTunes software? I googled but didn't see anything.
For the purportedly infected system, you can get no-charge assistance from MS for the installation issue of SP2 or, contact
MS for no-charge assistance in getting the system cleaned up.
Is that the the Onecare site? I actually did go there on his computer and did the download and the free scan. I was a bit put off by the bait and switch type tactics used with the "you have 6 million problems" yet they would never list them for me. Besides, and I say this with no criticism intended and it is probably as irrational a bias as my dislike of Auborn University (Go Dawgs) but...........
I have a hard time having faith in the removal of malware by the same company that wrote the code that contained the original vulnerabilities. I feel that sometimes a big corporation is exposed to so much (and often frivolous) liability that they will often spend more time trying to dodge "blame" than in finding a solution. I know, it's silly, but isn't any irrational bias?
Anyways, thank you again for your help and I look forward to the answers to my questions.
- The phone number I posted came from here: Get Security Support
" If you continue to experience problems after you scan your computer, you can call 1-866-PCSafety or 1-866-727-2338. This phone number is for virus and other security-related support. It is available 24 hours a day for the U.S. and Canada. "
There is no charge for calling the above number. The OneCare Safety Scanner will detect and remove malware. There's no bait and switch involved with it, unlike the rogue "security programs" I think you're referring to.
Usually, running the OneCare scanner restores the system's ability to update.
It will provide a list of what it detected, and attempt to remove it.
IF it detected numerous malwares, then the system has been serverly compromised and a format/reinstall may be in order.
The Scanner for Vista is different than the one for XP, Windows 2000, etc.
It's located here
Specifically, which malwares were detected when MBAM, SAS, WinPatrol, and Avast were run ?
I know of no conflicts between iTunes software and Windows Update.
The 0x80072EFD error code means that the system can not connect to the update servers and is usually related to an issue with the Windows Update Agent ... either it is not installed properly or a related .dll is not registered. Malware can be the cause of both, but so can system inconsistencies. Which is why I asked you if the System Update Readiness Tool [CheckSUR] was used.
Has Service Pack 2 been applied ? If so, then the message you received when attempting to run CheckSUR is a known bug .
Does the system have any connectivity issues or is it only related to Windows Update ?
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security - When the scanner was done with the computer I used it on, it offered NO report, and said xxx number of problems were found in the registry did I want them "fixed" (just like the rogue security programs lol). Heck no, not without seeing what it wanted to "fix." I don't have access right now to that computer, but it (onecare) left itself on there, I saw that when going through the files. I remember the event vividly as it hacked me off that it operated like one of those ads you see for reg cleaners.
While a format and re install is always an option, and many times even a quicker resolution to any problem, there HAS to be a way to fix anything without killing the whole system. I prefer to find that way when I can.
I don't know which specific malware was found after the MBAM and SAS were run. I quarantined and deleted them as they came up, again, without access to the computer I can't check the logs. WInpatrol and Avast were run after the computer was cleaned and as such, they both came up clean. After the SAS MBRAM, and Spybot were run, we did HJT, Combofix,
I ran the SUR before I did the SP2. LOL It was the first I had heard of it, (SUR). When I read this message: Important This update is offered on Windows Update only to computers that have a condition that the tool could resolve, I assumed when it did not run that it was not needed. was that an incorrect assumption? LOL that above didn't post correctly.
The only thing the system cannot access is Microsoft update. - What a great tool! although I had to run it in the Agressive Mode to correct my Windows Update error 80244019. Why is it buried so deeply in the Microsoft world?
- First, see this Knowledge Base article: Error message when you try to install updates by using Windows Update "Code:0x800736CC"
If deleting the contents of the Download subfolder does not resolve the error, then run the System Update Readiness Tool
Then try to update once more. If the system fails to update, then post the following logs, please:
1) CheckSUR.log ( located at WINDOWS\Logs\CBS )
2) At least the last 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log ( located in WINDOWS; the most recent entries are at the bottom of the log )
The updating issue is being caused by inconsistencies in the WinSxS subdirectory of WINDOWS.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security - I don't blame you for not allowing OneCare to fix registry errors without first seeing what the purported errors were.
Registry errors can cause connectivity issues with the update servers but you should be able to discern if that's the case from the CBS.log [WINDOWS\Logs\CBS]
Were any malwares detected during the OneCareSafety Scan ?
BTW, you can uninstall the OneCare scanning components from within Programs and Features in the Control Panel.
To keep things clear here ... the system was infected, cleaned, and then SP2 was installed, correct ?
Please open System Information by running msinfo32 from the Run line
From: How to determine and to recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows Vista
Manual steps to determine whether the Winsock2 keys is corrupted
- Click Start , click Run , type Msinfo32 , and then click OK .
- Expand Components , expand Network , and then click Protocol .
- Ten sections appear under Protocol . The section headings will include the following names if the Winsock2 key is undamaged:
- MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
- MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]
- MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IPv6]
- MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IPv6]
- RSVP UDP Service Provider
- RSVP TCP Service Provider
- RSVP UDPv6 Service Provider
- RSVP TCPv6 Service Provider
- MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
- MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
- MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
- MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
- MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
- MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
If there are more than ten sections in the list, you have third-party additions installed.
If there are fewer than ten sections, there is information missing.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security - so do i try to click on the fix it or not?

You have not posted about the issue the system is experiencing so it's hard to recommend what you should do.
How to ask a question
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security- Mow, I have not forgotten nor given up. I haven't been to "computer 1's" house yet to check the Winsock2, and "computer 2" just finished getting cleaned and got back to me. Computer 2 has been unable to install SP2 even though we had no problem downloading it, I directed him to the free SP2 support line and they were unable to help him (wish I could have been there with him lol). One thing they told him which I have trouble believing is that somehow he is firewalled by his WiFi and that is why he can't install SP2. I know we aren't discussing that issue here, but is that possible? Personally, I think while they were trying (and failing lol) to get SP2 installed, he mentioned this Update problem and they seized that as an excuse to move on to another call. As I mentioned, we had no problem downloading SP2 and I was unaware that internet connection was necessary for SP2 to be installed if it were downloaded or installed on a disc. Do you know if I am correct in my assumption? I installed SP2 on "Computer 1" without being connected to the internet.
As far as the 80072 EFD problem: As I said, I am having him check the Winsock and will be back to beg more help when he tells me what he found. I will not give up on this or get it corrected and not inform you. Please excuse any absences, they are a lack of information to share, not abandonment. Thanks again for all your help.
EDIT: Darn, I missed one of your posts. I'll read and follow that knowledge base article, run the SUR again and then get the log. - Ok Mow, he got this. What can we do from here? Is there a KB I'm not finding on fixing Winsock? i could have sworn I saw one earlier, but I can't seem to find it now. Would getting an install disc and doing "repair" fix the problem? LOL I know we can alweays re-install....... The problem is that he uses his computer for his online video company and I think he has stuff he doesn't want to lose.
2. Expand Components , expand Network , and then click Protocol .

You can always backup the "stuff he doesn't want to lose" but, once more, I'm not even sure which system you're referencing. IF this is computer1 , which has already had SP2 applied to it, if the Winsock stack is damaged, and WMI is damaged, then it's beyond doing an 'in-place upgrade' at this point in time.
If you applied SP2 without being connected to the net then you most likely downloaded the full SP2 package .
Is that assumption correct ?
If yes, then format the HD, reinstall Vista, then apply SP2.
You stated that SP2 was downloaded for computer2 but will not install and MS Support claims the WiFi network is preventing SP2's installation ... is that assumption correct ? It's conceivable that the LAN is blocking parts of SP2 from being downloaded but ...
Why not just utilize the download of the full SP2 package and forget about dealing with WiFi issues ? The system does not need to be connected to the net if you have the full package (standalone ) on hand.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security- Sorry, I did keep switching back and forth between computers. I can't seem to get them to the same "point." Yes I was referring to computer 2. And yes we downloaded the stand alone full package. The error he got the first time was REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG (0X80040154). As I said above, I did not believe the Sp2 installation problem was an issue related to his WiFi, but rather something Veenkarta in Delhi seized upon (when the customer mentioned it) after it was apparent that resolution of the situation was going to take too long and he gets paid by the number of calls he brings to a successful conclusion. I was merely verifying my suspicions that WiFi or any connectivity has nothing to do with the installation of SP2. You have done so lol.
Well with computer 2 it looks like your previous recommendation IS about the only option. Re-install. I suggested to the guy that he say the heck with the recover disc that office depot gave him with his computer and just go buy an OEM copy of Home Premium (which he is using) so he doesn't end up with all that crapware that the computer manufacturers add to the computer. Besides, this way he has an actual MS disc that he can use to perform a repair if he ever needs it.
Is it just me or do these types of problems only seem to come from versions of Windows that are installed by computer manufacturers and then sold with added on crapware and "recovery" discs rather than actual discs that contain real MS windows? I have never run across these problems with systems that I used either a retail or OEM version of Windows, but then I haven't done very many............ Sorry, I did keep switching back and forth between computers. I can't seem to get them to the same "point." Yes I was referring to computer 2. And yes we downloaded the stand alone full package. 0X80040154 would indicate that a required .dll is not registered. IF that were somehow attributable to the LAN/WiFi, then I think that disconnecting from same would workaround that issue. However, reconnecting after the application of SP2 might then be an issue.
IF the system in question is 64 bit, then see this blog post for a possible clue
CreateObiect fails with 0X80040154
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security- Thanks Mow. He's using 32bit Vista, I'm sure lol because he posted a screen shot of his System screen lol. He's quit responding so i guess I'm done with him. Hopefully though i can see "computer1" this weekend and try some of the stuff with him. Thanks for that link above. When I researched it all I found were Windows server (both versions) references and didn't know if they were applicable. SInce you linked that one I'm assuming they are. thanks again for all your help, you have increased my knowledge and my resource base immeasurably. I'll be back when I get a chance to work on Computer1 (my buddy) again to either let you know what worked or with more questions lol.

Sorry about the system's situation and I certainly understand your frustration.
When did these issues start occurring ... and what is the security suite/antivirus software ?
What is the Vista installation media ... is it Vista w/SP1 ?
If yes , then suggest you format and reinstall Vista.
Then, immediately after doing so, download, save , and install this update
Description of the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 software feature update released April 28, 2009
Although it is included in the full file installation package of SP2, I recommend installing it prior to applying SP2 because
Additionally, this update improves reliability when you install or remove Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2.
Now download the entire SP2 package and save it. ( The link is for 32 bit editions of Vista only. If the edition is 64 bit , click this link )
<snip>
If you choose to install SP2 over Windows Update there will be one pre-required package to install, Servicing Stack Update (KB955430), before Windows Update offers you SP2.
The Servicing stack is the component that handles installation and removal of software updates, language packs, and optional windows features. This update is necessary to successfully install and uninstall the service pack; it also improves the performance and reliability of the service pack installation.
Then install SP2 with much patience and all of the required restarts.
After that's done, and before you install the AV/security suite, check for updates using the Windows Update applet in Control Panel.
IF the installation media does not contain Service Pack 1, then we'll take a slightly different route but still, NO AV/security suite will be installed until after Vista and subsequent Service Packs/updates are installed.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer SecurityHi Mow, I'm back...........
I just am on "computer1" now. Just to rehash: It has an 80072efd update problem. I have run the fixit on the top of this thread (Reset Windows.msi) in both the regular and the aggressive modes. The computer is malware free, no 3rd party FW. When I tried to do the "Error message when you try to install updates by using Windows Update "Code:0x800736CC" I had a problem. When I copy/pasted: chkdsk %SYSTEMROOT% /r /x into the command prompt and hit enter, I recieved, "The Drive, the path, or the file name is not valid." The path in the command prompt looks like this: C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk %SYSTEMROOT% /r /x before I hit enter. I hit enter and I get that message. I DID follow the instuctions exactly as written in the KB, "Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator," What went wrong and what do I do? I have not proceeded with that particular fix as The first part hosed up.
EDIT: This computer does have the CHeckSUR logs. What do I look for in them and starting where? From where this first began happening or will just the last attempt to update tell us what we want? LOL And what DO we want? What am I looking for in the checksur?Hi Mow, I'm back...........

As to the 0x800736CC error code and it's KB article ... that was intended for Peg753, not for you.
Told you this thread was getting confusing .... can you run a chkdsk on the C:\ drive from an Elevated Command Prompt using this syntax
chkdsk /r /f
See - Using check disk from Command Line here
The CheckSUR logs should show if any files or information is missing in WinSxS or in the registry.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security- I tried the 'fix it' but it didn't work. I'm up to 22 updates that need to be installed now.
any other ideas? - Ok, I had done a disk check from properties before, but I just did it again anyway. Unfortunately, I had to finish making supper and wasn't at the computer when it finished and continued to boot to windows. Where do I find a log of what it found, fixed and recovered? I don't know how to read the CheckSur log. If I posted some of it would you please tell me if it's missing anything? If so let me know how much you would like to see as it's QUITE long lol. SFC/scannow question: This computer is an Acer and came without a Windows disc. Isn't it pointless to run SFC/SCANNOW if you don't have the Vista disc for repairs? I have an Ultimate disc, (his version is home premium) can I use it? I'm thinking that unless it has completely different registries wouldn't the repair option just pick the data it needed to fix the Home premium and ignore the extra stuff that Ultimate has? If I CAN'T do that, can I use an x86 disc of Home Premium or are the versions sold to the computer manufacturers different than the OEM and Retail versions that I can buy? At just $89.00 for an OEM copy of Home premium at newegg, I have suggested he buy one to fix this and for any problems he may have in the future. I was hoping that if he does buy a copy, we can just pop it in and do a repair or SFC/SCANNOW than a complete re-install. Are any of these things an option?
EDIT: Ok, I answered a few of my question by running SFC, but now I have new ones. I found KB 929833 "How To Use the System File Checker Tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or Windows 7." However I am not certain how to interpret the results.
I typed the command: "findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt" and hit enter. It gave me the cmd prompt again. I then typed the next one from the KB: "edit sfcdetails.txt" and hit enter. At that point I got a screen (which I don't know how to copy paste lol) which basically gave me 4 past files that couldn't be repaired and 4 from this recent scan. They ALL concern the Windows sidebar, which I have turned off and somehow doubt have anything to do with the computer failing to update. Have I done something wrong?- Edited byDeathStalker II Wednesday, July 08, 2009 2:31 AM

Was chkdsk run with the volume offline via an Elevated Command Prompt ? AFAIK, the Application event log shows the result of a chkdsk in XP. Since I haven't run one in Vista yet ... suggest you check there. <w>
Post the section of the CheckSUR.log from the most recent date you ran it, please. We don't need to see the entire log.

Acer has a hidden partition that can restore the system back to it's factory Defaults. There should also be an option to burn a Vista Disk, which in effect, is a copy of Windows Vista. I think this burning option is present in Control Panel but don't recall precisely where.

You should be able to copy and past what's listed in the sfcdetails.txt by pressing Ctrl+c to copy and Ctrl+v to paste.
In fact, you should be able to navigate to sfcdetails.txt via Windows Explorer, copy the file to the Desktop, and then open it.
You may need to agree to a consent prompt to copy it.
Then open it and scroll all the way to the bottom.
Then you can check for the files that can not be replaced/repaired.
Then replace them using the steps laid out in KB929833
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer SecurityI tried the 'fix it' but it didn't work. I'm up to 22 updates that need to be installed now.
any other ideas?
Please start a new thread in the Windows Update forum , tjfaloon.
Try another attempt at updating.
If/when it fails , close the Windows Update window.
Click the Start orb
In the Start Search field type in windowsupdate.log
Click the windowsupdate.log that is now showing and allow it some time to open.
Scroll all the way to the bottom and copy&paste at least the last 50 or so lines into the thread you started.
MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer SecurityBelow will be the ChweckSUR from today. As to the SFCdetails. Unless I'm mistaken, the only things that could not be repaired were the Windows sidebar things I mentioned above.

I don't know what to look for, but it seems as though it is using a proxy (which it shouldn't be I don't think) and also that it's not able to extract something it needs from a cab file. Here is the last attempt on in the log. Most of it is repeated tries and data, but I didn't know where to start and stop it. Does this help?

I had used it from another page and it allowed me to update some of the new updates but I still have one left that it won't allow me to download.... and when I start my computer it says that it can't find updater.exe.... please help...
Shayla It just occured to me to find and check the update log. Won't IT tell us what is going on? I don't know what to look for, but it seems as though it is using a proxy (which it shouldn't be I don't think) and also that it's not able to extract something it needs from a cab file. Here is the last attempt on in the log. Most of it is repeated tries and data, but I didn't know where to start and stop it. Does this help?
Sorry, I was never notified of your most post in this thread and just got back from a "vacation" that turned into non-stop tech support for Family and friends <sigh>.

There's a proxy issue occurring here, DeathStalker. Notice the proxy address that shows in the above WU.log.

MowGreen MVP Data Center Management - Update Services Consumer Security- That was the most optimistic title choice I've ever seen - for a 61 post thread about how Windows can't download files and run them.
Aaron Oxford - Remember you paid them money for this! - I tried the "Fix it" solution in both modes and it failed to fix windows update on my system. I then looked at "How do I reset Windows Update components" in the message from MowGreen below. I have not gone through all of the manual steps, but I did notice two interesting things. One is that msxml.dll is missing from my \windows\system32 directory. In fact, search cannot locate it anywhere on my machine. The other is that based on a suggestion I found on another website, I ran regsvr32 msxml3.dll (which is one small step in the instructions for resetting Windows Update), and whether I ran the command prompt as administrator or just through my administrator account, I received the message: "The module msxml3.Dll was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005."
Could the missing file and this error help account for the failure of the "Fix it" solution? If so, what can I do about either?
Thank you,

I'm able to correct this problem by using Microsoft Knowledge Bank. Thank you for your reply. - Hi Mow. pls help me. I searched and tried several methods today but still can't update windows even if using Windows Update (it shows error code 80072efd) or going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com (it shows error code 80070002, The website has encountered a problem and cannot display ...).
1) I use vista up to service pack 2
2) Symantec Antivirus 10, up to date virus def file. i only use default windows firewall. I turn them off before updating but still get it.
3) it has been occurring for a month, suddenly
4) I used MBAM and Windows Malicious Software Tool to scan for malware after reading your post. there's no malware.
5) I also run WindowsFixit tool. there's no change. running System Update Readiness Tool, too

I read somewhere it could be by the proxy. but I did command: netsh winhttp show proxy and it shows it's a direct access.
I'm really hopeless. :(.
Long This is definitely a connectivity error, 80072EFD translates to "Error_Internet_Cannot_Connect".
This is normally caused by Firewall applicatios blocking outbound traffic. We see in your log above that "sending" is receiving the 80072EFD error:
WARNING: Send failed with hr = 80072efd.

Here's a really good article with steps to try:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/836941
Also this one is pretty good:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956196/en-us - This one is "Page cannot be displayed" but the troubleshooting is still accurate for this issue.
I hope this helps.
If you find that my answer was what you were looking for, please remember to click the "mark as answer" box below!- Thank you for your help. Finally, it works.
All I've done is reset internet option settings and click "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update" in Windows Update screen. And amazedly, it's run. Now it's downloading 22 updates (335,7 MB total :).
Long - Sorry but i did not see the Ask question button untill after i posted here >face palm<
- This worked for me SO well, every single problem i had with my pc went away, defender not working, media player not doing slideshows, updater not working, not being able to view system info, all cleared up, thank you loads.
- Did not do a thing for my windows 7 problem.
- Hoping to use Fix it but it will not install because it cannoy stop the cryptographic service on Windows 7.
In Safe mode, the installer service is not on. - Hi Mr. Alter,
Have you found anyone to help you? I have Windows Vista and I can't download my updates. I would like to know: who, I can get help to do this. Please Help!
Thank you.
Sandra369 - Hi Mr. Alter,
This didn't help my problem with not getting my updates on Windows Vista. I have Microsoft Office 2007. I haven't been able to get all my updates. It keeps giving me a code of 646. Can you help, please?
Thank you.
