Windows update fails with error code 0x643
- I have downloaded the recent Microsoft updates and all but one installed successfully. The failing update was: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297);
with an error code of 0x643.
We tried several times to install it and it keeps failing. It was originally the 3rd update in the list to install. After failing the first time, it was the only one we were trying to install. We tried it after the restart required for the other updates.- Changed TypeKevin HauMSFT, ModeratorThursday, October 29, 2009 10:25 PMreporting

- Do I really need the failing update if I have 3.5 installed? If not I know I can hide the 1.1 update, but how do I fix update manager from thinking I need it if I don't?
Thanks.

Hi Doug,
Thank you for posting to Microsoft Answers Community Forums.
Try to download the standalone version of the update and save it to the desktop and try to install the install the same after putting the computer in a clean boot state.
Link to download the update KB929729:
To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista:
1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click OK.
6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
7. After the computer starts, try to install the updates.
If your issue is resolved after performing Clean Boot and then installing the update, then follow the steps on how return your computer to a Normal startup mode by following the steps under “Reset the computer to start as usual” in the following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
You may also try to restart the computer in safe mode and try to install the standalone version of update KB929729. To start the computer in safe mode restart the computer and keep tapping F8 key. Once you see the option safe mode select it and press enter.
If the issue persists, let us know if you are able to install other updates apart from Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB929729). Also let us know the exact error message you receive when the installation fails.
Hope it helps.

- I downloaded the update KB929729 Anny it was 8,802kb. Then I went through the process of using msconfig for a clean boot, rebooted, clicked on the download and said yes a couple of times and I presume it started as I got no further messages and nothing showed up in the update log. Afte about an hour and the system was quiet as I determined from Task manager, I rebooted and then set the system back to normal via MSCONFIg, rebooted again and triede to install the failed update and received the same error. "ERRORS FOUND CODE 643 WINDOWS UPDATE ENCOUNTERED AN UNEXPECTED ERROR".
Regards other updates, I've not has any more since this attempt, but I have received others after trying to put on the Net 1.1 fix and they go on ok. None though are NET fixes I do not think.
So...now what?
Thanks for the help too.
Doug
I'm getting the same problem with this upgrade. I've also tried the recommended solution but it didn't work for me either. I read somewhere that the solution is to remove .NET Framework 1.1 and re-install it because maybe the problem with the )+SP upgrade is a corrupt file in the original program - but I've not tried this because I'm afraid of causing some other problem or freezing my system somehow (or that I won't be able to find the original file anymore since 3.5 is out). It's the only upgrade I've had problems with (and I just downloaded 98 because I just upgraded). If anyone has a solution, I'd appreciate it.
Hello Doug,
Thank you for writing back to Microsoft Vista Community Forums.
First, try to create a System Restore Point manually, so that in case, something goes wrong while performing these steps, you may always perform a System Restore.
You may access the link below and try to uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework on the computer, and then reinstall all the versions of the .NET Framework on the computer.

Hope it helps.

I am having problems doing updates on my Windows XP Pro laptop at my place of business.
These are the following updates that will download, but not install followed by their error codes:
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417)
Error Code: 0x645
Error Code: 0x80070645
Error Code: 0x66A
I have manually tried to download and install the .Net Framework Service Pack 2 KB974417. However, when I try to install it, I receive the message: "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup."
I am not sure if this is the cause of the problem, but I had a disk consumption problem a little while ago where my C:\WINDOWS\Installer file was taking up 36G of my 55G drive.
I used the Windows Installer Clean Up utility to remove any .msp files that are not registered on the system. I accomplished this with the following command:
C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up\msizap G!
This reduced the size of the C:\WINDOWS\Installer file tremendously, but I had to reinstall all of my Office products.
I am not sure if this is related to my Windows Updates issue or not, but thought I should mention it.
Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

2. Click Start > Search
3. Type 'Windowsupdate.log' in the field as to what to search for. Make sure you you check to enable searching in hidden and system directories
4. Click on the Windowsupdate.log to open it
5. Scroll to the bottom of the text file. (tip: press CTRL + END)
6. Copy approximately the last 30 lines of the text file, and paste it here as a reply

- To all log posters,I am currently reviewing what has been posted and will attempt to come up with a possible solution. It appears you are all experiencing a slightly different issue, though the end result of course is that the .NET Framework update does not install***I need to obtain more specific information in regards to the make, model, OS, and service pack level of the machines that are having this issue.Chark86 - Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP3I need Systechguys and DaemonRoot's information please. DaemonRoot, you mentioned (correct me if I am mistaken) that they OS you pulled the log from was Win2k3 server? Do you know what Service Pack level? Thanks for your patience!

Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think. - We can try to repair the installation of the Windows Installer + .NET Framework1. Download the Windows Installer package:(Vista Only): http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en(Win2k3, XP): http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?familyid=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en2. Click START3. Type 'cmd' (without quotes). Right click the result at the top of the START menu and select 'Run as Administrator' (Windows 2k3, XP, and below will have to click 'Run' first)
For Windows XP/2k3 Server Reference Purposes
Command Prompt opens
4. Type CD %windir%\system32 and press enter. This will place us inside the windows\syste32 directory
Possible corrupted Installer Service files are stored here and must be replaced.
5. Type attrib -r -s -h dllcache and press enter
This command allows us to rename files in the next steps
6. Type ren msi.dll msi.old and press enter - this will rename the file and essentially make it a backup
7. Type ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old and press enter - this will rename the file and essentially make it a backup
8. Type ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old and press enter - this will rename the file and essentially make it a backup
Renaming these broken files to *.OLD allows us to replace them with healthy copies.
9. Once these files have been renamed, just restart your computer. Once the computer has booted back into Windows, complete step 10 to finish the installer repair process
10. Locate the Windows Installer package you downloaded in step 1. Launch the install package, follow the on-screen instructions, and once finished, restart your computer
11. Once restarted, download the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool located here:12. Download the file (location of download is not important). Once downloaded, run the utility and select to remove ALL versions of .NET Framework. Let the utility analyze the installed packages and components on the machine. Do NOT interrupt the removal process13. After the removal process is complete, restart the computer14. Once restarted, download .NET Framework 3.5 located here:15. Once the package has been downloaded, install it, and then restart the machine***16. Finally, try and perform your Windows updates as previouslyThank you very much for you patience on this matter,Let us know if this resolves your issue. If it does not, we can attempt to log the Windows Installer to come up with more plausible solutions. Thanks!

- Hi Ryan,
I'm currently testing this out... quick question.
Same fix for x64 clients?
Dan - I looked around and found a download from blogs.msdn.com and downloaded and ran dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip which worked for me. The update for Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 Service pack 1 and .Net Fra... came up automatically the last time I checked for Updates and installed successfully!

Good Luck
Rob - Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right. We can try to repair the installation of the Windows Installer + .NET Framework
thanks! Dan, try to follow the Ryan Thieman's instruction above... that works for me 100%...1. Download the Windows Installer package:(Vista Only): http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en(Win2k3, XP): http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?familyid=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en2. Click START
3. Type 'cmd' (without quotes). Right click the result at the top of the START menu and select 'Run as Administrator' (Windows 2k3, XP, and below will have to click 'Run' first)
4. Type CD %windir%\system32 and press enter. This will place us inside the windows\syste32 directory
5. Type attrib -r -s -h dllcache and press enter6.
Finally , try and perform your Windows updates as previouslyThank you very much for you patience on this matter,Let us know if this resolves your issue. If it does not, we can attempt to log the Windows Installer to come up with more plausible solutions. Thanks!

Dave - I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question but...
My computer installed the Hotfix KB953297 with no problems but now is giving the following error code:
Error parsing c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\config\machine.config
Parser returned error 0xC00CE508
I tried removing the Hotfix in Add/Remove Programs but I'm still getting the error.
System Info: Microsoft Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2, HP Pavilion Pentium D
Any ideas? Thanks, Tessa - RyanT,
I followed your instructions, all 16 steps, and when I finally got to updating Windows, it found 2 .NET Framework updates to download and install. I told it to install them and they both failed:
The following updates were not installed
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB953300)
I did the download and install by going to the Microsoft update site, let it figure out what updates I needed (I chose "express") and told it to install both.
Here is the last 40'ish lines from the update log file:

Thanks,
Char - I had the same problem. I solved it very simply. I reinstalled Service Pack 1 for .Net v1.1. Then the update installed without a hitch.
- Here's a good KB that has some steps on how to fix the 643 error (uninstall .Net, cleanup, reinstall).
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100
I hope this helps.
If you find that my answer was what you were looking for, please remember to click the "mark as answer" box below! - weaverrr,
I tried to install the .NET v1.1 SP 1 (which I realized later is the original update that gave me the 643 error) and it complained about missing files or something to that effect. Since the previous steps seemed to do a .NET Framework cleanup, I thought downloading and installing .NET 1.1 then installing .NET 1.1 SP 1 might work. The 1.1 installed, I rebooted, then ran microsoft update and it found 3 updates, the v1.1 SP 1,
the .NET v2.0 SP2, and the .NET v3.5 SP 1. I told it to install all 3.
The v1.1 SP1 and v2.0 SP2 installed successfully, but v3.5 SP1 failed. I tried rebooting since 2 had succeeded and wanted a reboot, then went back to microsoft and tried again to install v3.5 SP1. It still fails.
Here's my log file:

Based on reading some of the other suggestions, I went to the control panel -> add/remove programs. I looked at what .NET programs it found and I don't see v1.1 SP 1. I see .NET v1.1, .NET v2.0 SP2, .NET 3.0 SP1, and .NET v3.5.
Don't know what that implies...

Kevin Hau wrote: Here's a good KB that has some steps on how to fix the 643 error (uninstall .Net, cleanup, reinstall).
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 ...Let me expand on Kevin's suggestion:
1. Before doing anything else, write down the .NET Framework versions which are already installed:How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3187852. Now see Resolution Method 2 in...
When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603" (ignore the title, if need be)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100After running the appropriate/needed tool, (re)install all .NET Framework versions manually using the download links on the page then run Windows Update manually to install security updates for same.

As for my previous question failed 4 times
I beleive this is the problem for the .Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update. Judging from your error there is an available KB Article ID: 923100 which will help resolve your issue. Although you may have to build .Net Framework from the bottom up which will depend upon the operating system you are currently using. You can follow the link that I have provided either for information or for resolving this issue. There is also means of contacting Microsoft Support from that link.
All the best!

~ Microsoft MVP Windows Live ~ Windows Live OneCare| Live Mesh|MS Security Essentials Forums Moderator ~ - Let me get this straight, I have 20 computers all with the same error and the only suggestion is to manually uninstall .net framework and re-install it; which will break our Quickbooks links btw.
MCSA 2003|CompTIA Net+ - Hey Shane79, guess what... we're in the same boat!
I have just some machines with this issues... so gald they're just testing machines.
Unfortunately this is not the first time this happens with a .NET update :(
Anyway right now I have over 80 domain controllers that wont be gettign this... till a real solution is found.
Dan After spending an entire day on just one PC running XP Pro SP3, I finally solved my problem as follows:
1. Used Control Panel-Add/Remove programs to remove those .NET Framework versions which would uninstall.
2. Used Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) to remove remaining versions.
3. Used Aaron Stebner's tool (http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx) to remove remaining vestiges of .NET framework.
4. Tried to install all previously present .NET Framework versions, using the links on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100. I got as far as 2.0 SP1. 3.0 wouldn't install due to "DepCheck indicates Windows Communication Foundation is not installed" (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/netfxsetup/thread/acfacc44-c3c8-48ad-94df-f5d2d1f10bb1/). The workarounds on that page didn't help me.
5. Ran Windows Update. Much to my pleasant surprise, this installed 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, and 3.5 SP1.

In most cases, you can check for and install all available updates manually via http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (WinXP) or by running Windows Update manually (Vista) instead: Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all other Automatic Updates users further back in the queue...which may explain, at least in part, why Automatic Updates hasn't brought all of them in for you yet.

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and whether service packs have been applied

~Robear Dyer (PA Bear); MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002; Disclaimer: I neither represent nor work for Microsoft- I have tried almost all of the suggested set of steps in this thread. Some .NET versions in a sequence will install and then 1 doesn't. The result is that in each method, something doesn't install. And it seems to vary. I also ran into a curious thing when following the Method 1: steps (Manually remove and reinstall .NET Framework), some links would install and download directly and for other versions I used the microsoft update tool - customize - and picked the one I needed and it successfully downloaded and installed that way!
Also, I go to some of these microsoft KBs, like "How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and whether service packs have been applied" and things don't seem to match up to my PC. In fact, for that particular KB, only one of the versions listed matched what my system had (2.0.50727.3053). A couple of them differed only in the last 4 digit segment of the version #. V 3.0 and 3.5, there was no mscorlib.dll file to even look at!
Also, I think it was also that KB, it said I could take the %system%\Microsoft.NET\Framework, copy and paste it into the Windows Explorer address bar. Unless it's something that I've never come across, my system doesn't have an address bar in window expl.! I just ended up using Search, giving it "Microsoft.NET" and let it find it for me. I realized %system% wasn't the name of a folder, so when WINDOWS folder showed up, I figured that's what it was and that's where I checked all the version folders.
I'm getting completely frustrated and these microsoft sites add to it.
I'm going to try davelasker 's suggestion as my next attempt. Hopefully that will be the magic bullet.
- Sometimes things dont work as expected, in my case sometimes I just wait for the next patch round, or the one after and must of the times a revision or a newer patch is release.
If the patch is not rated as Critical and you other defenses as antivirus and malware removal tools are fully functional and updated then you should be ok... or at least make it without issues till the next round.
In my case I will continue troubleshooting next week, if I find something then I'll be more than glad to share it.
Dan - So, what do I do now that I've removed all .NET packages and 1.1 won't even install?
I tried all suggestions on this thread; most recently I uninstalled all versions (1.1, 2, 3.5, maybe 3 too) via Add/Remove control panel, rebooted, ran the .NET cleanup tool, rebooted. Now 1.1 installer fails with an illegal memory write (by the Regsvcs.exe app installed by the 1.1 installer). Another weird thing is that 1.0 appears to be installed (%WINDOWS%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705 is present & full of files), but doesn't show up in Add/Remove.
OS is XP Media Center 2002 with SP3. I can't even remember what the original error was, other than that one of the Oct. 14 .NET updates failed. - Earlier than I was expecting!

Dan - This doesn't work on Vista. I get a file not found at step 5 and the files cannot be renamed (Access is Denied). I am running cmd as Admin. What a huge waste of my time.
- Tried reinstalling SP1 for .Net v1.1 and get a "SL889E.tmp has stopped working" error. This is a huge waste of my time.
- What a total waste of time. Were these updates actually tested before being dropped? I have 5 critical updates for a Vista machine that cannot complete. I have two Windows 2003 Servers that no longer notify me when updates are available via Windows Update. Something is amiss - where is the love from Microsoft?
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all, I have been out for the last few days.
JDHack,
I would give System Restore a shot, if that does not work then we can certainly dive in to see what can be done. If System Restore works, it will save us quite a bit of troubleshooting time.
1. Click START
2. Click 'All Programs'
3. Click 'Accessories'
4. Click 'System Tools'
5. Click 'System Restore'6. Follow the prompts shown to restore your system back to a date before the issue started. Though System Restore does not target personal data, it's recommended that you back up any data like music, pictures, and documents in case something does go wrong.
Tex222,
Updates to .NET Framework can be picky based upon which versions are installed first and in what order. The original instructions at the top of this thread were meant for XP machines. Have you tried the .NET Framework cleanup utility? I would give that a go and then try to reinstall .NET Framework 3.5 from the stand-alone package.
1. .NET Framework Cleanup Utility:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/attachment/8904493.ashx
2. .NET Framework 3.5 stand-alone installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en
Also, you mentioned 5 updates for Vista. Do you know which exact updates these are? Are these Framework related or something else?
Thanks!
DaemonRoot,
With the updates you posted above, did that resolve the issue on the rest of your machines? If not, let us know which ones.
Thanks for everyones time and participation,
Thanks!

Hi Okracoke19,
Welcome to Microsoft answers.
I would like to ask you few questions in order to get a better understanding of this issue.
· Could you give me the complete error message or error code you get?
· How are you trying to install the Service Pack on the computer?
First, I suggest that you run the System Update Readiness tool on the computer and install the service pack in clean boot:
Download and run the System Update Readiness tool (Checksur.exe). After you download this tool, it runs a one-time scan for inconsistencies that might prevent future servicing operations.
For more information about how to download and run the System Update Readiness tool, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 947821 Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008 : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/947821
You may install the stand alone for the service pack from by keeping the computer in clean boot.
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)
Clean boot starts Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
Steps to perform clean boot and check if you have the issue.
1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
User Account Control permission: If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
7. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.
Reset the computer to start as usual:
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
Refer the link for more information: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows7: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Let me know if this worked.

- Hi Swathi, thanks for your interest in solving my problem but it still tells me it can't install service pack 1. My error code when I try this installation is 643. This is a problem that has been ongoing for about a year now and I just let it go but now in trying to upgrade my Vista OS to Windows 7 it has come back to bite me, and tells me it needs it installed before preceding with the Windows 7 upgrade. Yesterday I did download the system readiness tool and then tried to download pack 1 from the Microsoft site and it failed. Today I did your suggestion of a clean boot with the same results. In the past all recomended downloads have installed correctly it's just service pack 1 that's been trouble.

When installing updates using Windows update or Microsoft Update you may receive Error 0x643 or 0x80070643 (23 Oct-09)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982=====================
Step #1 => Before doing anything else, write down what .NET Framework versions are currently installed:
How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785Step #2 => Now see Resolution Method 2 in...
NB: If you remove .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 using the tool, reinstalling .NET Framework 3.5 will also install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2; then Windows Update will offer .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.
IMPORTANT! => If you remove .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, reinstall your .NET Framework versions in the following order:
1. .Net Framework 3.5, then...
2. .Net Framework 1.1, then...
3. .Net Framework 1.1 SP1NB: KB923100 references this page: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx. Please read ALL of it as well as the related page http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx before using the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool.
Step #3 => Check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates offered.

- The failing update was: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297);
with an error code of 0x643. - What a complete nightmare! I have wasted hours on this today, did everything I was told in the link by Augustine The Geek, but now the very last thing, reloading .net 3.5 sp1, it is failing to load! I am just so frustrated that MS have the cheek to download something to my computer that doesn't work. Although i have successfully reinstalled .net 2.0, which the failed update/fix relates to, that won't load either. What do i do now? Ran Update and it found nothing more to download.

- I successfully installed SP3 to XP Home Edition and shut down when it asked me to restart. Shut down dialogue box said it would install three items as I shut down; wasn't sure if it was referring to the SP3 install or to 3 automatic updates "waiting" at the time of the SP3 install, which I was holding off on until the SP3 install was in place. I allowed the install and got an error message on the first: "NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-x86.exe application error; the instruction at "0x01016BED" referenced memory at "0x00000004." The memory could not be read." Choices were to terminate or debug; chose debug. It went on to install the other two items. Started up and got a related error message: "NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-x86.exe encountered a problem and needs to close." Gave the time of the error and offered to send an error report for me. Shut down and started up twice more and did not receive the error message. Looked up the KB article, which referred me to security bulletin MS09-061 describing .NET Framework 1.1 service pack issues and qualifying them as Critical. I've verified that I have .Net Framework 1.1 installed per the article, but I'm in over my head when it comes to this type of problem. I had issues with NET Framework during disk reformatting a few days ago, so I know I don't want to mess with that if I don't have to. Hoping either (a) I can ignore the problem in the absence of continued error messages or (b) that I can simply restore to the point prior to the SP3 install and just live without it. Am I being ignorant in either of these based on the nature of the error?
- I reinstalled Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

Worked for me!
Cheers,
Marnix - Oh bless you, Marnix. That worked for me too. Finally. All the other solutions listed here were so appallingly cumbersome, I finally just refused the update and figured I'd get along without it. But yours actually sounded sensible and do-able, and yes, it worked. The system was looking for one file in the wrong place during the reinstall, but I searched, found it and re-directed the program. Went to Microsoft updates and re-allowed the update, it ran this morning with no indigestion.
I bow to you.
Munacil - I have the exact same problem on my laptop running Vista, maybe it's a Microsoft issue that they don't want to address because I can't get an answer either!
I'm at .net framework 3.5, so why would I need a 1.1 sp1 update?
