The right side of the welcome screen is just completely blank.  With no user logo, I cannot get into my computer normally.  I found I could bypass this by control alt delete, but this gets me in as a "guest" and I can't access any controls or windows update help, which apparently requires administrator user status.  How do I fix this mess and get my normal login back?

Looks like its a very strange issue, normally it doesnt happen with the updates..
    Try the following troubleshootin steps
1.Restart your computer in safe mode
2.Login to default windows xp administrator account
3.Check whether your old user account exists in documents & settings
4.Create a new admin account from control panel->user accounts
5.Restart the computer in normal mode & check whether its showing up ur newly created user account .811151
If it is showing up then probably your user account is corrupted hence to copy the data from old corrupted user to account to new user account follow steps mentioned in KB 811151..
If it is not showing up then try system restore from safe mode to an older date when your computer was working fine..

    Good Luck

    Hope it works!!!!

Thank you so much for your reply.  How do I start the computer in safe mode?  And what is an administrator account?  Thank you, in advance, for any more details that you can share.

thank you so much for all this information!  you have been very kind.  unfortunately, the administrator login link talks about passwords, and i can't even get that far, as my computer tells me i need an administrator to reset a user name.  is this true?  do you happen to have any other tricks?  or does it seem to you that we need to reinstall the software?  thanks, once more.  goose
