AnswerWindowsUpdate_80070424 error on vista 64-bit

    hey,

I have numerous problems all stemming from the WindowsUpdate_80070424 error.  I am running vista 64-bit home premium SP1.  I can't upgrade to SP2, update windows installer, install visual c++ 2008, install video games due to this error.

    Things I've tried and failed:
*regedit Checking Bits - they already are activated and working
*regedit windows update - started and working on automatic
*Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories. Right Click the 'Command Prompt' item and click the 'Run As Administrator' option.

In the Command Prompt window, Paste the following command.

    REGSVR32 %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

    Press ENTER.

You should see a popup that says the command succeeded.

Exit the command prompt and try Windows Update again.

    *various other attempts

The point is that none of these work with vista 64-bit.

So I opened up the windowsupdate log and have attached a section that looks relevant.

Thanks for any help that can be given.

I would strongly recommend running the removal tool now, followed by a reboot.

I would also strongly recommend uninstalling Avast, reboot, and do a fresh install to make sure it's installed & working properly now that the Norton "leftovers" have been dispatched.

If problems persist after doing so, download & install both of the following manually:

       • Description of the Windows Vista...installation software feature update (28 Apr-09)
       http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955430

       • Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista...

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support for Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009. Availability of chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=13014&gprid=582034 & select appropriate category (i.e., Download issue; Installation issue; Issues after you install a service pack).

1.This is not answer. As I said Windows Modules Installer you can fix as well.Besides a few months ago I posted solution for TrustedInstaller too in this popular topic:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistasecurity/thread/edfa02fc-8d5b-4f53-b04d-ca966d2355e7

    But..

    - probably it is post 100 in this content and thus probably nobody read it and moderators are too lazy to read & check all proposed solutions

2.Repair Installation should fix this error too -the better way if you don't know how to fix it than order anybody format computer
you can also try System Restore (maybe anybody have correct checkpoint)
Sorry Flavius, but your solution for those systems where the Windows Modules Installer service are missing  will only help those who have a Vista DVD .

Most OEMs do not include one with their systems, only the ability to write a Rescue or Recovery DVD , NOT an Operating System DVD.
Most Users will never figure out how to extract a copy of WindowsInstaller.exe from it.

And, most English speaking Users will have no idea of how to follow your steps as it is in fractured English , to put it kindly.

That's why they should contact MS Support as Support will send instructions, a copy of TrustedInstaller, a registy file for Vista X64, and the steps to follow to set the Permissions correctly for replacing TrustedInstaller.exe.

So, in order , these are the steps to resolve this error IF the Windows Modules Installer is listed in the Services console:

    1)  Register wuaueng.dll from an Elevated Command Prompt
    2)  Run sfc /scannow from an Elevated Command Prompt

IF the Windows Modules Installer is NOT listed in the Service console:

    3)  Contact MS Support if 1 and 2 fail
    4) Do an in-place upgrade, better known as a Repair Installation, which will necessitate installing all of the updates previously installed and/or the application of the last Service Pack that was applied, which will include all of the updates issued until that Service Pack was Published.

Error message when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates: 0x80070424:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968002

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?  What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

For the link, I already have all that stuff activated.  They aren't causing the problem.

I had Norton and didn't renew.  I also use the free Avast.  That's about it.

Did you (1) uninstall the Norton application and then (2) download/run the Norton Removal tool (3) before the subscription expired and (4) before installing Avast? [yes/no]

Suggest you run the System Update Readiness Tool (CheckSUR) as there is an issue with CBS (component based servicing) and CheckSUR may be able to resolve it.
Also, please check to see if the Windows Modules Installer is listed in the Service console.
To access the Services console either right click Computer on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose Manage (the UAC prompt will appear; enter the password if one is used and/or click the Continue button; click the arrow next to Services and Applications in the right frame; click on Services ) or, click the Start orb, enter
    services.msc
in the Start Search field. Under Programs, click on services.msc .
Scroll down the list of Services and see if Windows Modules Installer is present.
    If
it is listed and it's not a running service, click on the Start the service link.

    1) Is Windows Modules Installer listed ?
    2) Does the Startup Type show as Disabled ? If so, set it to Manual by double left clicking on it.
Set the Startup type to Manual . Then click Apply , then OK .
    3) Did the service start ?

@BroMow: Running CheckSUR might be pointless if OP was online for any length of time if he didn't uninstall the Norton app, download/run the removal, and then install Avast before the Norton subscription expired. YMMV, of course.

I ran the Norton removal tool and reinstalled Avast.  I can't upgrade to SP2 because of the error...  I'm trying to run the System Update Readiness Tool.  It is stuck on installing an update for about an hour.  I'm going to let it run for a while.  If it doesn't install, then i'm just going to try a system restore on Vista.  If that doesn't work, i'll wipe the harddrive and start fresh.  I've spent four days trying to fix this single problem.

Sorry if you feel like you have wasted your time.  Your help was greatly appreciated though.

That's why the system is experiencing the 80070424 error when attempting to update. Since you're going to format and do a clean installation, then there's nothing more to do.
This is at least the 5th time I've seen this occur on a Vista x64 system.
As to what causes the Windows Modules Installer service to become so damaged that it's not listed in the Services console ...
    I really can't say.
If this happens again in the future, contact Microsoft Support . They have a fix for this specific issue.

I have had the same problem.
The only way i was ever able to install windows vista service pack 2 was to do a clean install reinstall of my operating system with windows vista sp1 x64.
u should have a dvd that came with your computer to do a reinstall i suggest formatting your hard drive during the process as this will get rid of any viruses on your computer if there should be any.
when and if u do u will need to disable use reccommended settings and select never check for updates so windows update doesnt download updates after the reinstall is complete.
u should also have a installation disk that came with your computer to install the network driver which youll need to get online in most cases.

Then u will need to open internet explorer and go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=656c9d4a-55ec-4972-a0d7-b1a6fedf51a7&displaylang=en and download the windows vista sp2 standalone installer.
    before doing anything else.
After install is complete and your computer restarts sp2 should be installed.

I do not have Windows Modules Installer.  Perhaps I need to figure out where to get that.

    1. This is not a TechNet forum.

    2. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
