This is a complaint and suggestion about how Windows Update works for optional device driver distributions.

When Microsoft Update distributes optional device driver updates, and I click on the 'more information' link, it takes me to the winqual.microsoft.com support site. Because I'm not a device driver developer I have no way to use that site to find and view information on the update. The link does not work to provide more information.

    Example:
    -----
Microsoft driver update for HP psc 2400 Series
    Download size: 11.4 MB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
    Update type: Optional
This driver was provided by Microsoft for support of HP psc 2400 Series

    More information:
    http://winqual.microsoft.com/support/?driverid=4189
    -----

It would be extremely helpful if more information was provided with these updates, or a working link was provided to a place where I could see more information. Shucks, it would be more honest if you simply said that more information isn't available and good luck to you.

It's been my experience that these optional driver updates are the ones that are most likely to cause problems.

Because more information is not available to me, I am reluctant to install the update and usually just hide it.

    Color me grumpy

I agree..  I find the information provided by Windows Update entirely useless.  On top of that, it seems the link they provide e.g., http://winqual.microsoft.com/.../driverid=XXXXXX doesn't even take you to the Winqual website, at least not for me.  I get automatically redirected to some generic help site!

I third that...  I just clicked one of those links for the first time and was directed to the generic help site.  I wanted more information on a ethernet driver for my motherboard which when installed resulted in an error with the device that would not allow it to enable.  I ended up rolling the driver back.  It would have been nice if I could have learned what the update was supposed to do and maybe get some info as to why it failed.  Why provide a link for "more information" if there is no more information to be had??  Thanks for nothing!
