Microsoft update error 80070002
- Windows update works fine. After installing Office 2007, I tried to change to Microsoft Update. After the license agreeement, a brief message about the ActiveX controls flashes, and then the message[Error number: 0x80070002]
appears. I cannot get past this.

Please note that this is on a Vista Home Premium system, and none of the provided options have led to a solution
so far. This happens with both Internet Explorer 8 as well as with Mozilla Firefox 3.5.3.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Windows update now includes the items that Microsoft Update used to monitor. When you run Windows update you will see updates for your other Microsoft programs as well.

Hello Romboc,
Thank you for using Microsoft Answers Forums.
To resolve the 0x80070002error on windows updates, remove the download directory, and then visit the update locations again. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop.
c. Minimize the Services snap-in.
2. Rename the “SoftwareDistribution” directory. To do this, follow these steps:
. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
a. Type cd %windir%, and then press ENTER.
b. Type ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press ENTER
c. Type exit, and then press ENTER .
Note When you remove the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder, the history list is erased from the "Review your Updates" section of the Windows Update Web site. This action will not affect the currently installed updates on your computer. Subsequent updates will appear in the history list.3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
. Maximize the Services snap-in.
a. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start.
b. Close the Services snap-in window.
4. Visit the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or the WSUS server again, and then download an update.
5. If you still receive the same errors, verify that you have correctly performed steps 1 through 3.
6. If you still cannot install the update, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
906602 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602/ ) How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues
OR

That should fix the issue.
Thank you.

- Unfortunately all the suggested answers are designed if the WINDOWS updates fail. The problem here is that I am trying to start using the MICROSOFT update service. The problem appears to be with the installation of the Microsoft Update (program or service?). I do not get far enough to actually find any updates, much less (to try to) install them.
Also: There is no "Automatic Update" service on my computer. The closest I can come is the service called "Windows Update". I have already previously performed all the suggested steps, without any successful result.

- None of the proposed answers deal with the actual problem as I described it.
I CANNOT get Windows update to INSTALL, and therefore any answers describing methods for the error occurring during the actual download of updates are not applicable.
Thank you. - romboc,
