I have tried 4 times-after getting reminders- to install this update. It downloads- starts install- then quits....
no error messages, just 'Windows did not install..'
I use Vista Home Pack and Shield deluxe- never had any problems before- now 3 crashes a day...

have checked the update history and found that ALL the aborted uploads of KB972036 have the same number- WindowsUpdate: 80070020 does this help?

thanks Mike, I appreciate your help.
    here is what I did:
    Method 1: no - still 80070020 code

Method 2: safe mode- still not installing the update

Method 4: I tried this before it didn't work

Method 5: I HAVE Windows Firewall disabled--- I enabled it temporarily when I tried method 4..before

I tried to upload and install the update manually at one time - didn't work either..

Is it safe to just ignore this update?
I have not had any crashes lately- so for the time being everything seems ok (except for this update- and I have the reminder turned off because it annoys me to have it pop up every few minutes..

    Marie Louise,
This update is an Application Compatibility Update.   Here is the link for it: http://support.microsoft.com/KB/972036
If you read through it and feel it doesn't apply to your system then you can hide the update if you care to.

    thanks Mike,
I tried it- it uploaded a bunch of new updates- all except, you guessed it: KB 972036.....
I seem to be up to date on every update available- and my PC is running ok now- so maybe I just give up.
Don't know of this particular update is redundant by now... I have 12 failed attempts on my update list and it has been a while since the first attempt.
Thanks for your time and help- maybe this is a problem that cannot be solved for now.

I have been through the same thing as Marie Louise.  It is all very time consuming.  After reading her questions and Mike's answers, I too have decided to skip it.  Thank you for all your discussions.  It saved me alot of head ache.

    thanks Sharon,
it has been a while since I stopped worrying about this particular update- I am up to date on all other updates, and things seem to be running without problems....no crashes etc... no warnings- so I am now assuming it is save to continue without it... Good Luck and knock on wood :)

It looks like only a symptom, because I get the same error when trying to install .net framework 3.5 sp1.
    don't think it's ignorable.

    Thanx

     Answer
    Ivgeni,
Here is a link to a site that discusses how to remove\re-install the .Net framework.  You may want to follow that then attempt to reinstall the .net update.
