There are three ways to know when your question has been answered.

    • Come back to the forums, and click My Alerts at the top of any forum page.
    • An email will automatically be sent to the email for the LIve ID you used to register for this site.
    • Subscribe to your question to automatically get an update in your browser and or email program.

To subscribe to the RSS feed for your question, follow these steps:

    1. After submitting your question (see how here), click the orange RSS button to the right of your questions title.
    2. Any replies to your question will automatically appear in your browser. In Internet Explorer 7 you'll see your feeds under the Favorites center. Click the Orange Star near the top left of your browser window, and then click feeds.
    3. Many mail programs will also collect your feeds. In Microsfot Office Outlook 2007, a RSS Feeds folder appears in your mail folder list.

Oh my, that was scary! I cllicked on one of the links in My Alerts and got whisked off to some TechNet area I barely recall. Nothing at all to do with Microsoft Answers.

Any thread that you have alerts set for will show up in "My Alerts", whether it's on Answers, MSDN, TechNet, etc... The same goes for "My Threads", any thread across all Microsoft forums that you've participated in will show up there, clicking the link to that thread will take you to that forum thread in the brand where it lives.

I am still trying to get my head around Alerts. It's almost the same as keeping a Notepad page of shortcuts to certain threads except it also shows the time and poster of the last entry in the thread. So if you can remember the last time you visited Answers, you can save some visits to threads.

Wouldn't it be nice if the alerts would age themselves out or disappear after you've seen the notice. Or if they could even be hidden until there was a new reply in the thread.

Actually, try this. Go to My Threads and select the Unread filter. Now you're seeing a list of every thread you participated in, which has a post that you haven't read yet.

Perhaps it's too soon to figure how MSAnswers works, until at least it actually does ;-) An Alert finally showed up in my email for this message although the settings are unchanged. Unread is a bit slow but gets there eventually.

Unsubscribing from a thread is a skill I have yet to master. Persistence is a virtue.

Actually, we just fixed a bug on Thursday which made it so certain users didn't get alerts, so you should get alerts as expected from now on. I noticed that the unread filter does seem slow, we'll take a look at that.
