Windows Live Sync and Mac OS X Leopard ?
- After upgrading to Snow Leopard this morning, Windows Live Sync fails when "Verifying your Windows Live ID" with an error "Windows Live Sync failed to sign-in because the service is temporarily unavailable or you are not connected to the internet". I am entering this on my Mac so my Internet connection seems to be just fine, all my other applications that require Internet connectivity seem to be OK, and I have 2 other machines (not using OS X Snow Leopard) that are currently active using Windows Live Sync.

Thanks,- Yes, thanks, I am well aware that Windows Live sync works with Mac OS 10.5.It does not appear to work with late builds of Mac OS 10.6 - at least not able to log into to Windows Live Sync from a Mac running 10.6. I am wondering if compatibility with emerging OS's has been looked at (Snow Leopard, Windows 7).
It should work with any released build of Mac OS10. As for future builds of the OS, something could certainly break.
You might want to contact Live Sync support.
Go to http://support.live.com and sign in with a LiveID
Click on the Windows Live Sync item in the list..
If you are not presented with an email support form, but are instead redirected to help.live.com for that service/product, in the page that opens from http://help.live.com select any topic on the left hand side or search for a question in the search box.
The results of your search or the clicked topic appears in the right hand frame, along with a tiny link in the lower right hand corner – “Get more help.”
Click that tiny link and you will get to a page with a link “Contact support”
Click that link and you will be presented with the email support form to fill out. Provide as much detail as possible and you should get a response from support within 24 hours.

Microsoft MVP Windows Live / Windows Live OneCare, Live Mesh, & MS Security Essentials Forums Moderator- Well, just to update, >24 hours and no response from support.I tried to repeat the above steps, but the links now send me in an endless loop.I see that others have reported that they are unable to sign in also.Would be nice if there was at least an acknowledgement of this.
- Sorry, I just discovered that in their infinite wisdom <sarcasm> the links for support for the products represented by the new Windows Live forums loop you right back here and there is no more link to the e-mail support form.
My gut feeling, based on your report (and reports from others using Mac OS in the newsgroup for Live Sync) that it is indeed broken.
I don't have a recent Mac to confirm the problem on, unfortunately, so we'll have to wait for someone from support to bring this to the developers and get an official response here or a fix, assuming that it is broken.

- Any word on Snow Leopard compatibility update?
- Don't hold your breath. I mean they only had 14 months to prepare for this, or, you know, take three seconds to tell us what is going on.Every single time there's a problem, which is OFTEN, we never hear from them. Maybe, MAYBE, it starts working two months later. It's abandonware. I wish they'd stop pretending otherwise.

- I just upgraded and have the same problem. It cannot seem to log in to the Windows Live Account! This is a huge problem for me as I keep my firm's accounts sync'd to two computers using this program. Microsoft, please fix this issue ASAP as this is a great product offering!
- I had the same problem. For the meantime, I'm trying out sugarsync (https://www.sugarsync.com/). It is a paid service, but appears to work on both Mac and PC. It's a little more cumbersome than live sync, but you also have online storage (think of it as a combination of live sync and the idisk).
- I have the same problem. WLS team - please be aware that WLS is not permitting Snow Leopard users to log on.
- same problem. bought new Snow Leopard and WLS doesn't log in anymore. Please fix this!!
After much testing and rolling back, it appears Live Sync is indeed broken for OSX 10.6 and 10.6 Server. It's not a connectivity issue as I have the ports required explicitly open in the fw config.
Live Sync is a great product that's critical to my workflow (and so is 10.6), I'd love to see it get a fix ASAP.
- Your official answer mentions unreleased version of Mac OS. Now that Mac OS 10.6 (aka Snow Leopard) is officially released and in customers hand, can we have an update on Windows Live Sync for the Mac. It is broken with this release.

- There is no official answer in this thread other than the link to system requirements. My first reply to this thread was before 10.6 was actually released.
The Live Mesh team posted a blog entry that Live Mesh does not work with 10.6, so I can only assume that the same holds true for Live Sync. The Live Mesh team gave no indication of when this would be a supported OS, unfortunately.

Microsoft MVP Windows Live / Windows Live OneCare, Live Mesh, & MS Security Essentials Forums Moderator - windows live sync doesn't work in Snow Leopard OSX 10.6. It cannot logon. It keeps complaining
"Verifying your windows live ID
Windows Live Sync failed to sign-in because the service is temporarily unavailable or you are not connected to the internet. Please try again later"
I am sure the service is up because my windows machine connects fine.
I am sure the logon username/password are correct because it used to work before I upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Any idea if the problem is being worked on? When will it get fixed? Any way to work around the problem for now?
thanks

Yes, it would be nice. I don't know why they aren't saying anything about it - at least acknowledging that it is a problem. The Live Mesh team posted a hasty entry on their blog last week, but there was no indication of when the new OS 10.6 would be supported by Live Mesh, currently in beta.

UPDATED:
I am extremely happy MSFT has recognized the problem. I just hope the fix is sooner than later!!!! Like within the week. I have so many mission critical files that I constantly need from my Marketing Team. I don't use DropBox because it messes up the permissions of the files I create on my mac. And my windows counterparts lose the ability to view them. That is why I loved Windows Live Sync. It played much nicer than DropBox.
MSFT please fix soon!!!!!!
Thanks!- Edited bymsanta Wednesday, September 02, 2009 9:03 PM
- Having the same problem. Hoping for a quick fix.
- I have been frustrated with the lack of transparency and documentation for windows live sync. Ever since it transitioned from Foldershare, it has been difficult to find support and assistance. I suppose one could argue that as a free service, there is no obligation to provided this. While Windows Live Sync has served me well in the past, it is the lack of support (not just regarding this issue, but also in the past) that has led me to abandoning this service. I have now transitioned to Dropbox, which I am very happy with so far. While Dropbox only has beta support for 10.6, at least the existence of Snow Leopard is acknowledged and there is active communication regarding potential pitfalls and progress regarding compatibility testing.
- Does Dropbox do the same thing? At this point, I am looking for a replacement since we have heard nothing from Microsoft and this is a mission critical tool for me since all client files are digital and I like keeping them on the two computers I work on.In the hopes of raising the profile of this to MSFT, I have posted it on Twitter with the hash tag :#MSFTlivesyncfail For those with Twitter please tell MSFT to fix the problem and include the hash tag.
- I have found services that sync but not one that also allows all of my machines to be accessed from the internet like Live Sync does...
- See this thread - http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wlsync/thread/59df3fd9-35b8-40a6-9104-c9982d952799

- Here is what I have found:
Dropbox does the same thing along with keeping your files in the cloud but is limited: free account = 5 gigs; 50 gigs = $10 a month; 100 gigs = $20 a month.
ChronoSync is $40 charge then allows you to sync files but only over a network (not over the internet).
LiveMesh is much like Dropbox but not sure of the amount one is allowed to sync and keep in the clouds, but it is like LiveSync and does not work with 10.6 right now.
Hopefully they will get LiveSync working again and VERY soon. - I may have a clue on what is actually broken. Based on the log file, Live Sync connects to connect.sync.live.com to get the IP of the server it supposed to connect to, and then use SSL to that particular IP address. However, when Live Sync tries to connect to that IP, somehow the connection get an unexpected result. After trying to access the IP directly using browser, I found out that the SSL cert presented is not valid because the name in the cert is different from the IP (the cert is using a fully qualified name). Even Safari is unable to connect to that IP although Firefox and Google Chrome beta is able to do that albeit being presented with the security warning page.
I don't know how to pass this info to MS team. I believe MS developer should be able to fix it as Firefox and Chrome are able to bypass that limitation.

- So, I've tried deleting and re-installing a few times. Now, the program says it installs, but is nowhere to be found. I've emptied the trash, I've re-started, etc... No sign of the program after it goes through the install process.
However, I've just installed it to an external drive and it shows up there. Still DOESN'T work mind you, But, at least now I'm back to getting the error message.
Perhaps MS wants us to revert back to Mac OS X 10.5 instead ?-)
Frustrating to say the least.
Scott - Workaround (basically use Live Sync and SyncToy together):
If it's very important for you to get this to work, here's what I did (not tested thouroughly yet - testing it right now):
1. Find a Windows machine that is in the same network as your Mac. You can use your desktop in your office, or if you want to follow me, you can install Windows on VirtualBox.
2. Share your Mac folder. If you use VirtualBox, you can use the the shared folder feature.
3. Create a Windows local folder to act as a staging area (one for each Live Sync personal folder set up)
4. From your Windows machine, setup a SyncToy synchronization from your Mac folder the staging area.
5. Setup your Windows machine to join the LiveSync account and add the staging area to the Live Sync personal folder setup.
Drawback - SyncToy can be scheduled using Scheduled Task once every day (only) or manually triggered. BTW, I'm still using XP, not sure about scheduled task from Vista.

ThanksWill Live Sync become Live Mesh? I'm confused. Never mind, found my answer. For people wondering the same thing: "Stefan's overview of Live Mesh compared to Live Sync is excellent, but I'll add that Live Sync is a peer to peer sync program exclusively. Live Mesh uses the cloud as an intermediary. The fact that we can do sync via Live Mesh, including peer to peer is because that functionality was built on top of the Live Mesh platform. So, in effect, Live Mesh as we are using it today is Sync, but there is promise of much more to come.-steve"- Proposed As Answer byanthony1515467 Thursday, September 03, 2009 9:01 PM
I think its funny that people are blaming Microsoft for Apples mistakes.
Id bet Apple intentionally created this bug in hopes people would pay for their MobileMe sync service.

Yeah, I agree ... Microsoft didn't change anything, Apple did. Please, MS, help us poor Mac folks before we all switch over to PCs!
Right, Microsoft didn't change anything, which is why there is a problem. Microsoft dropped the ball.- Agreed. MS may not have changed anything, but the Snow Leopard developer build was out for awhile so MS should have been able to test their Mac compatible products with it. Unless there was a last minute change in Snow Leopard that MS didn't get a chance to test, MS should have figured out the issue well before the release of Snow Leopard.
At this point, I just hope MS gets the update out early next week. I use Live Sync for my business and it is crucial that it works. - And, at the very least, issued a note on the webpage that it wouldn't work so some of us could delay upgrading...Speaking of which: I've just reverted back to 10.5. Time Machine is amazing! I hadn't used it until the night before I did the upgrade to Snow Leopard. Restoring was a snap.

- It's pretty hard to be patient when Snow Leopard has been available for testing for so long, and many of us have developed work flows which depend on Live Sync. Seems like microsoft have had their heads in the sand on this one.
- I'm sufffering like all of you (and indeed I had to buy a dropbox account in order to survive). But blaming this in MS?! When Vista came out everybody was blaming MS for the poor support of the various applications which to me is the oposite of what we're complaining about here.
Snow Leopard is turning into a nightmare for me, I should have stuck with 10.5 ... but I didn't, so now I have to cope with it as we all do (or revert back to 10.5 like SCParker did

skepper,
I think we can all agree on this. The sooner the better as many of us depend on it.- Hi - am also stymied by this problem as I travel extensively and was using my XP netbook to take notes and upload to Sync at Wifi hotspots, then integrate with Scrivener on the Mac. The sooner this is fixed the better for me. It is disappointing it was not tested beforehand, Snow Leopard has been available to the development community for testing for some time now.
- Yes, I re-loaded 10.5 (.8) and all is right with the world again. A few things: I had to delete my synced folders and re-sync. As long as the files are the same, it doesn't take a whole lot of time. Re-loading lost many of my loaded program serial numbers, so I had to re-enter those as well. No big deal if you own the software and have the numbers.
Time Machine is the bomb! However... When I re-loaded 10.5 from the disc, Time Machine errored out telling me that the Time Machine files were from a newer version (uh-oh.) Nope, I just had to do the software updates from Apple to bring 10.5 up to 10.5.8 and Time Machine worked fine.
I also ended up having to re-load iWork & iLife from the discs as well. They must have been up-graded when I install the Snowy creature.
I hope MS can fix sync soon as I'd like to bring Snowy back to life. But, until then, I need to have work/home in sync. I have to say, I do not really like iDisc/mobile me for syncing. Way too long for the large Vectorworks (Cad) files I work with.
Later all, Scott - We got what we paid for! I am trialing this app. Seems very solid. https://www.sugarsync.com/
- Damn, I wish I had known before I upgraded. Would have not upgraded until the fix is in.
- This is terrible.
My work is syncrhonized with this inconsistent tool. I use it since it were "Foldeshare" (I miss Foldeshare). The Microsoft mess it all !!!
And you see not even another word about the progress of the fix. Where is the respect for the customers? More than a week withou sync important files!!
Thinking about going to https://www.sugarsync.com
abastian - Microsoft this is a wonderful service. Please help us that use it ASAP. I have been manually synchronizing 7 PC's (all Win7) and 2 Macs for 2 weeks now. Please help.BTW Win7 32bit Enterprise has the same exact issue as Snow Leopard if upgraded from Vista 32bit Enterprise. However fresh Win7 installs work fine, if you choose "No Proxy" as opposed to "Same as Browser" for the proxy settings.
I may have a clue on what is actually broken. Based on the log file, Live Sync connects to connect.sync.live.com to get the IP of the server it supposed to connect to, and then use SSL to that particular IP address. However, when Live Sync tries to connect to that IP, somehow the connection get an unexpected result. Even Safari is unable to connect to that IP although Firefox and Google Chrome beta is able to do that albeit being presented with the security warning page.
Did you try trusting the cert in Keychain?
I don't know how to pass this info to MS team. I believe MS developer should be able to fix it as Firefox and Chrome are able to bypass that limitation.
HTH- Please Microsoft I need the live sync again. We have 8 computers. 6 with windos and two with mac. We need use again LiveSync! Why I didnt read this post BEFORE!! Please ASAP!
- I did try to download the cert and set to Always Trust in the keychain, without any change in behavior. But, don't take my word for it. I may have done it incorrectly or there could be any other reason why it didn't work. Right now, I use SyncToy + a separate Windows Machine + Live Sync to get by.
- Personally, I find this completely intolerable. If Microsoft cared about supporting Live Sync, they could have gotten the developer preview of snow leopard, and ensured that their product worked when the final version of snow leopard was released. Instead, they decided to stick their heads in the sand, wait until a major platform upgrade that they "support" was released and *then* decide to look. Now, 2 weeks after the product stopped working, they say that they are aware of the problem and have no ETA for when a solution will be available.
I just uninstalled Live Sync from all of my computers and now pay $5/mo for www.sugarsync.com. There are other solutions out there as well. I'm happy to pay for syncing - but I need it to work. And I need a company to stand by their products.
Looks like Microsoft just does not get customer satisfaction. - Sugar Sync works well for keeping files in sync.
I have found another good Mac option for allowing me to access any of my files remotely over the Internet, called Farfinder.
http://flyingmac.com
Works like a charm.
Between sugar sync and far finder I now have everything I need and will never return to Live Sync.
- Please add me to the list of people experiencing this problem with 10.6 and Live Sync.
As a side note, I find it somewhat amusing that some of those who have responded are so bitterly upset that this FREE software is broken. I also use Live Sync - I depend on it daily - but I don't pay a dime for the service or the 'cloud' file storage space and the amount of support they can provide me is directly proportional to the amount of revenue I bring them.
With several options out there, some of which start as low as $5/month, if it was mission critical to me I'd be more than willing to pay a mere $60/year for the service from another provider. Until then, I'm accepting of the choice I made to go the 'free' route. - Bederson,I would guess that they've probably had SL in house even before developer previews were available for competitive analysis. This is classical Microsoft arrogance as is the lack of communication with their user base. They claim sync and mesh are for any device yet you will undoubtedly see all services working on new Windows builds before they're released. They do this to Mac users because they can and probably because they take a little bit of pleasure in it. Why do you think Office for Mac is such a loathsome product? It's unfortunate but its how they roll in many cases.
- anthony1515467 and bconrey:
I think that you are dreaming, or alienated.
We are talking about Microsoft. They had bought the Foldershare to take it off the market. Now we are all hostages of the service of low quality given by Microsoft. I am originally a FOLDERSHARE user . I would never believe in Microsoft to siynchronise my files. Here we have the result !!!!!
I am very mad about this incredible bad suport !!!!!! - Please help. Our entire small office has become dependent upon Live Sync. We'd be happy to pay a reasonable amount for a service that worked and was supported and we are only going to switch if this problem isn't resolved by Wed. of next week. If we do switch from Live Sync we are also going to switch all MS Office products.Spence
- another anxious user here. Microsoft, i know you're working on the situation so thanks. but we are in dire need to have this software working as the result of it not being compatible results in a break of work flow which is really poor on a company that supports the user and the enterprise. please get your team to work on this fix; heck, even notify Apple about it!

- For what it's worth, I've downgraded to 10.5.8, not only because of WLS incompatibility, but also due to several other glitches. Several applications I use (including PS CS3) where crashing more or less at random. In addition, perrfomance gain was only marginal. So I'll wait for these issues to be ironed out, and the next generation of applications taking full advantage of GCD to come out.

I've skimmed the comments, and as far as I can tell, Apple released Snow Leopard a month sooner than expected. Good marketing move, but it seems to have really screwed developers over.
I'm in no rush for Snow Leopard... seems like people are pointing out plenty of problems with doing the upgrade so I will wait till a majority of them have been address by Apple and other application developers.
Here is a good article about the upgrade, applications that may be incompatible, and what alternatives exist for those who have already taken the dive and need to get something going ASAP.

- Please help to solve the problem ASAP. Can't live without it.
- Well, we need a fix and a timeframe. It makes me wonder that Microsoft, of all companies, can't do a relatively simple fix on an Apple product. This is getting really old. Right up there with not having Outlook for Mac... and not allowing it to even talk to Entourage.
- There is a work around for Mac users. If you use Parallels, you can download WLS and run it on Windows 7 (or Vista, or XP). However, I haven't figured how to share necessarily between the Mac and PC side, since they really don't like each other very much (not that it's personal). But I was able to download files, but had to duplicate file space. But it works on the PC side, just not the Mac side.
- Microsoft - we really do need an update here. It has been quite some time.
I just found out Snow Leopard makes Live Sync stop functioning a few minutes ago, so I will be holding back on upgrading to snow leopard till Microsoft has a fix for Live Sync.
The development seeds have been out for months if not a year. Microsoft didn't have to wait until the GM release of Snow Leopard to see if their product would work or not. This isn't even a heavy code problem, its an authentication problem. I find it hard to believe that if Microsoft cared at all about Live Sync they couldn't have gotten a fix done before Snow Leopard's release or at least in the weeks its been since it's release. Live Sync for the Mac just isn't a priority for them. Heck, the Mac just isn't a priority.

Too true... The statement that the development seeds have been out for a year doesn't amount to much. Fixes to Office 08, exchange integration, or a number or non-mac related projects issues will obviously take priority. The world doesn't revolve around Apple, and it only barely has it's orbit adjusted by Microsoft.
The only change that takes place between Live Sync functioning and being broken is the OS X 10.6 upgrade. When someone else comes in and breaks a working system it is their job to fix it... but this is the digital world, and apparently that rule doesn't apply. Apple may be able to sit back and state, "That's another developer's issue, not ours, so go talk to them" simply because that is the way of software development (Microsoft does it to Apple, and Apple does it in return), but that doesn't make it right. It doesn't fix the issue.
I don't see Apple stepping forward and fixing it themselves, but I do see alot of people who use OS X coming and and demanding a fix from Microsoft. Demands which are made after those individuals do something to their own system. Which puts this back to a very basic issue: People need to look after themselves.
The solution to this problem was very simple: Don't upgrade to 10.6 till everything you need works on 10.6, and if you do run into a bind... make sure you have a way to go back.
If you are going to be at the very bleeding edge of technology, you will bleed.
On the topic: I don't expect a fix to this issue for at least 2 months after the release of Snow leopard. If it happens before then, i'll be pleasantly surprised... and then i'll upgrade.- Do we have a timetable for resolution of the issue? It would be very helpful.Thank you,Geoff
- We need the lack of response and support to cost Microsoft. I will be cancelling my pre-order of Windows 7 on my 6 PCs and will continue to run XP (and in one case Vista) until I can fully transition away from PCs. We can make the lack of responsiveness to the Live Sync issue an indication of Microsoft's lack of interest in maintaining service to their users.
If they don't want to support Live Sync they should either eliminate it or charge for it. Until they do either we remain users and they have us out in the cold.
No Win 7 for me. There's several hundred dollars that they're now not going to get. The more of us that do that, the louder we become.

Unfortunately, Geoff, there hasn't been any announcement for when a new version might be made available.

Live Sync is a free service. I suspect that the cost to Microsoft to run the service and make it available to Windows users (and Mac users) is much higher than the cost of your Windows 7 licenses. I understand your frustration, but I think that you are over-reacting a bit here, no?
-steve
Microsoft MVP Windows Live / Windows Live OneCare, Live Mesh, & MS Security Essentials Forums Moderator- Well of course it costs more than _MY_ Win7 licenses. And no I don't think I'm over-reacting. This is an exhibition of a lack of support and service. The kind of thing Mac users love to criticize MS about. Don't get me wrong, I can't say I'm thrilled about my move to Snow Leopard or iPhone 3.1 for that matter.
- Where I think Microsoft has failed, Pangster, is by not making a clear and concise announcement regarding the plans to update the service to support the new OSX. I am pretty certain that they will, but not letting people know at least a target timeframe that an update can be expected is bad - in my opinion. I, on the other hand, also think that Apple shares some blame here since there doesn't seem to be any good reason for a minor OS upgrade to kill both Live Sync and Live Mesh that had worked on the prior build. I certainly don't know if the corresponding teams at Microsoft had the opportunity to test the OS update prior to release and, if so, if they knew that it would kill their products. I can only hope, for the sake of users like you that have been impacted by this, that more communication be forthcoming and that an update be made available sooner than later.
-steve
Microsoft MVP Windows Live / Windows Live OneCare, Live Mesh, & MS Security Essentials Forums Moderator - Steve,Good try but you're defending the indefensible. This is not a minor upgrade. It's a major OS release that's been planned for over a year. I've been receiving updates from other vendors for months in preparation.MS is just being slow, Apple has been able to update the OS (with 10.6.1) quicker than MS has been able to patch sync. This is common problem with MS, all software releases are slow. They seem to have a problem getting the code out the door. Finally, the lack of visibility on this subject is amazing. The sync blog does not even acknowledge the issue; they're still talking about the site redesign (that I hate). The only thing that brings me here is the lack of a alternative (that does not sync with a server, just peers). MS killed the market for this product by supplying it for free but does not support it. Madness.
- We're in agreement on part of it, at least, Richard. :-) The communication about this situation from Microsoft is terrible and the slowness of a patch or update to resolve it.
I don't know that I'm defending Microsoft, though it seems that way, I guess. And, it is debatable if you can call Snow Leopard an OS release or a "service pack" update. No matter what, it *is* inexcusable that an update has not been made available or, at the very least, an acknowledgement of the situation by Microsoft's Live Sync team - someplace, anyplace.
-steve
Microsoft MVP Windows Live / Windows Live OneCare, Live Mesh, & MS Security Essentials Forums Moderator I was going to purchase two new licenses for Microsoft Office, and I was going to purchase a VMWare Fusion license for the Mac, but these purchases are on indefinite hold since without file sync they're just not justifiable.
So there: hundreds of dollars on hold until this gets fixed.- I'm trying out PowerFolder -- $138 lifetime license, peer to peer with optional online storage and -- so far -- seems compatible with Snow Leopard. In fact, I've been able to point PowerFolder to my previously LS folders and it has re-synced no problem. So I think I'm done with LS!
- Stephen,
I'm not making the tired "MS=bad, Apple=good" debate here. I'm a huge MS fan in fact. I design AD networks and MS pays the bills. But MS has undeniably dropped the ball here. A good part of the responsibility may go to Apple as well, but Live Sync is a MS product and they are responsible for it.
To claim that it's free and therefore unworthy of support is a cop out. It needs to work. Simple as that. If it doesn't, it's incumbent upon the owner of the product to ensure continuity of service for its users. If MS wants to charge for that, then so be it, charge for it, but MAKE IT WORK.
Since there IS no charge, if their plans are to simply neglect LS and its users then we should know that. I am comforted knowing that a program I rely so heavily on has the (supposed) backing of a powerhouse like MS. If it was freeware by a no-name company I wouldn't use it because I wouldn't trust it.
So MS has several choices here, 1) support it; 2) charge for it; or 3) get rid of it. Doing NOTHING is not fair to the users of LS.
- Please. This is an excellent Microsoft product - a gem of macintosh software.
- please fix.
- "getting rid of it" means at least telling us that they're getting rid of it, rather than just leaving us to fibrillate in uncertainty.
- Yes, this is very disappointing that we still doesn't have any update.
However, has anyone tried the Windows Live Mesh? https://www.mesh.com/welcome/default.aspx
Does anybody know about it, please?
Thanks for sharing the pain. - "I'm trying out PowerFolder -- $138 lifetime license, peer to peer with optional online storage and -- so far -- seems compatible with Snow Leopard. PS - A friend of mine runs Live Mesh and he says it does NOT work with Snow Leopard. Just one second-hand report here.
- I tried Live Mesh myself as well. It doesn't work!!! I think it is the same problem with LS. Poor!!!! Not updated!!!! Don't try!
- I'm taking it slowly but have so far converted about 2 GB of data. I am syncing to a co-worker who is syncing via LS to others. Main issue seems to be that PowerFolder doesn't like parens and quote marks in file names -- but offers to sync anyway, simply removing the offending quotes. But it's clear on which files are affected and saves (in the recycle bin) the non-converted versions of the files. So, so far, so good!

There was a post in the Live Sync newsgroup yesterday that said that an update is being worked on.

Just a jump off this, I too decided to try out SugarSync as it was getting great reviews... It does look to be a good program.
I wanted to point out one thing though...We’re happy to report that SugarSync works fine on the Mac operating system Snow Leopard. Users that upgrade their operating system from Tiger or Leopard to Snow Leopard should see no changes in their SugarSync service.
However, there is one small problem. Our friends at Apple made some changes in Snow Leopard which break the SugarSync auto-update functionality....
http://www.sugarsync.com/blog/2009/09/21/snow-leopard-has-arrived/
Some developers need time to fix some issues that Apple's Snow Leopard is causing, and a little friendly jab in Apple's direction is warranted.
If you trully depend on a tool like Live Sync, then I recommend you quit using a free tool and start paying for a service.
You have plenty of options. I'll be comparing Live Sync to SugarSync for the next few months.- Doesn't SugarSync work by syncing/backing up using the "Cloud"? Our company's policies do not allow storing data on outside servers for security reasons. I suppose the good thing about LiveSync is that it is peer to peer network. I am trying out PowerFolder and while it allows backing up to their cloud server, you can also sync peer to peer. Seems to work ok for now (still on trial) but the pricing is quite steep.
- I don't know about for others, but the problem with many of the paid services is that everyone needs to pay. I would be okay paying for my account if it would be free for others which I invite to use it. I use foldershare with project members for each client. It sure beats emailing visio diagrams, word docs, code, etc. I have had good acceptance rate with my clients because it was free and it was Microsoft for which most already have the live ID. I have been resorting to using a windows virtual machine to do my syncing. I drag the files over into a fusion virtual machine. I decided that livesync was not longer a strong enough reason to hold off upgrading to 10.6.
Hopefully Microsoft will get this updated soon. Seems ironic that they blamed so many vendors for not supporting Vista and now they are guilty of it. What is probably worse for me, is that no one even updated the livesync landing page to say it's only compatible with 10.5.
-VA - Has anyone had any experience with Chronosync? I've been looking at SugarSync and it seems to have it's own set of issues. Slow uploads, confusing set-up, requirement to manage files on the server rather than directly syncing to the remote machine.Just wondering. The glacial response here is very frustrating and I need to get some type of syncing re-established.Thanks, JWD
- I made the move to SugarSync but after a couple of weeks of experiencing some of their "own set of issues" (as mentioned above) I've given up with it. I had two problems that are largely unresolved on the SugarSync forums: 1) a constant "pending upload" count; and 2) the appending of thousands of files with "(from computername)". The latter problem often resulted in having 5 or 6 versions of the file exist. This increased the size of my documents folders on all my computers and created some other rippling complexities for me.
When I went on their support site and found that one solution was to remove and reinstall the SugarSync Manager I wondered how often I might have to implement that "solution" and gave up on them. It took me a day to clean up SugarSync with any degree of confidence (due to those rippling issues).
I just like how Live Sync does it. I've never had a problem with it... until Snow Leopard of course. If anyone else did synchronization the same way Live Sync does, I'd be glad to pay for it.
- I was able to work the kinks out of SugarSync and it seems to be working well for me now. I deleted, via the manager, the 'from computername' files, keeping the most recent versions. I only uploaded a selected number of folders (about eight) with a total of 3 gb of data. Did have to manually copy several files for complete sync, but once finished, things seem to be working well. Updated or changed files sync quickly and correctly. The problem with SS seems to be the initial setup which is quite labor intensive.Still have the 'pending uploads' issue however, so there's some problems to be ironed out. If things continue this well with SS, I doubt I would return to Live Sync and risk another shutdown when Apple tweaks Snow Leopard. There's just no excuse for this delayed patch other than Mac users are really a low priority for MS.JWD

Hello Maurice,
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.
We would like you to reinstall the SugarSync Manager on the computer.
The steps for uninstall are given below.
In order to completely remove SugarSync from your Mac please move the following items to the Trash:
/Applications/SugarSync Manager.app
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.sharpcast.xfsmond.plist
/Users//Library/Application Support/SugarSync
/Users//Library/Preferences/com.sharpcast.SugarSync.plist
Then, install the SugarSync Manager. In case you don't have the installation file, the latest release of SugarSync Manager is available for download at
https://www.sugarsync.com/downloads
This should resolve the issue. If the issue persists, please feel free to let us know. We will be glad to assist you.

I have this same issue. I'm not looking for a solution that syncs to the Cloud but rather just something that syncs two computers. Does anyone know of something else that does this? Dropbox and Sugarsync are great but I don't want or need that Cloud functionality. PowerFolder seems to do what I want but it's too expensive. Any ideas? Don't think MS is going to get this going any time soon.
You might check out chronosync. It syncs 2 computers and does not sync to the cloud. However, the 2 computers must be on the same network. It will not sync over the internet as livesync does.Doesn't SugarSync work by syncing/backing up using the "Cloud"? - I too took a look at Chronosync. It seems like it should do the trick, but I found the setup confusing, way too geeky, and promising too many things to too many people. I'm not sure if you can sync over the internet, or if you can only sync over a local network. If you have the time to set it up, perhaps it'll work. Let us know if you try it.
I have SugarSync straightened out finally, and I'm quite satisfied with it. It was a bit of a pain to finally understand their process, but it did not seem nearly as confusing as Chronosync. Powerfolder looked fairly good, but the high price put me off also.
Syncing to the cloud doesn't seem to be a big issue, at least for me, and may in fact be beneficial at some point. Live Sync would allow you to access another sync'ed computer, but as I recall it was quite slow to find something if it was a few folders deep. The SS Manager seems quick and responsive. I update some Excel files on two different computers, and maintain a personal website with Dreamweaver, and have found the synchronization quite a bit quicker than I recall Live Sync doing. I did like the Live Sync price, though, like many things sometimes something is only worth what you pay for it. Sugar Sync now is about $50/year for 30 gb storage which will be plenty for me.
JWD - I gave up on SS when it repeatedly crashed or failed to connect. Mac users just don't seem to be their focus, to judge by the volume of complaints in their forums.
DropBox is working really well for me, although I can see the problem if syncing to the cloud is not allowed. If I didn't have so much already backed up to Mozy I'd probably try it for more than the free 2GB.
Chronosync isn't really the same as WLS or the other options being discussed - it's not continual real-time sync, it has to be scheduled. But I believe it can sync to other off-network Macs mounted as drives through afp. It's also not free, although it's a one-time cost not recurring as with SS, DropBox etc.
I keep hoping MS will fix the issue with WLS, if only to spite the Apple engineers who broke it with SL! - ANY NEWS ABOUT A FIX?Thank's that everybody's searching for a decoy, but what about our main issue, LiveSync?I (our humble small company) really need a fix... do we have any information?Merci a lotStephan
- Any idea when this will be done? Will Windows 7 have the same issue?thanks
- Windows 7 will not have these issues. It works perfectly on the RC. On the other hand, I still don't know why it is taking so long for MS to fix this issue. As far as I can tell, it seems to have trouble using the APIs for authentication and the Keychain in SL. I don't think they have to rewrite a big part of Live Sync's code to fix this simple issue. It is evident that this is not important for Microsoft.
- Can you estimate whether it will be working with snow leopard within 6 months? 3 months? 1 year? I am in desperate need of a sync program so i will have to switch if too long. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
- Microsoft, you should learn from this experience and realize this is the exact opposite of how to handle such a situation. Lack of communication, lack of support, and a general disregard for your customers. Pathetic.Communicate for god's sake! Is it that hard? Perhaps the Windows Live Sync team blog is broken just like Live Sync for Snow Leopard (how long has it been since it was updated?).Further, I can even sign in on my Leopard machines anymore. Not a single one of them. There is something broken in Microsoft land and they are unwilling to openly communicate about it.
- We use foldershare with our teams of developers producing DotNetnuke modules. We have become very reliant on this great little app, and used to from before MS became involved (read purchased) the app.We too are finding the lack of information on a Microsoft Forum as very disappointing. Please just hint as to how long the wait. Are we talking weeks or months? It would be great for our dnn email customers, who directly benefit by us having the ability to do rapid development with the foldershare too.
- I was chatting with a colleague today and Windows Live Sync came up under the category of "the great things that Microsoft has bought and killed." We decided that Live Sync on Snow Leopard is dead. At this point, after what can clearly only be described as negligent management on Microsoft's part, we both decided that, if and when a Snow Leopard-compatible version is released, we doubted that it could be trusted. Clearly this product is not a priority for Microsoft (or they would have been testing it on pre-release developer versions of Snow Leopard) and we've decided to move on.In the past I've used SugarSync (https://www.sugarsync.com/) and been very pleased with it. I don't need all the "extra" stuff, I just want to sync a few machines up, but it does that very well and with minimal overhead. I'd recommend you check it out. Live Sync on Snow Leopard –– on the Mac OS, period –– is a lost cause as far as I'm concerned.
- It's been a month. Any update on this? Or is it officially dead?!
- Hrm, I'd say it's time to stick a fork in it: it's done :/ Like someone else said, I've also been receiving Snow Leopard updates for tons of apps for the past few months. Snow Leopard has been in development for over A YEAR. And it's not like LiveSync is a huge app. ____, VMware put out a VMware Fusion Snow Leopard compatibility fix a few days ago (even though the previous version worked fine for me in Snow Leopard). They also have the next version (3.0) built from THE GROUND UP for Snow Leopard. (I'm not advertising for VMware, just using it as an example) Looks like some devs have been spending this past year+ wisely getting ready for Snow Leopard. All in all, not surprised by Microsoft's actions :/
- Microsoft Support Staff: Can you do more to ensure us that you are indeed seriously working on a fix to Windows Live Sync that will work for those Mac users who have switched to Snow Leopard? It would be helpful if at the least you can provide a time estimate. Many of us have been seriously impacted by the loss of your fine resource. We appreciate that your product is free, but now that it is out there and so many users rely on it, do you not have a commitment to stand by it?
- Would like to second this request. Some of us aren't giving up on this yet, but could really use an indication that you're not giving up on it either.
I'm still holding off on upgrading to snow leopard for the moment, but at some point I'll decide I've waited long enough and will have to look at other solutions. - I too am anxious to continue using this service. But I cannot stress strongly enough how disconcerting it is to hear… nothing. Please, Microsoft, tell us where this is headed. If you are killing it, just say so. But if you are continuing, please, give us some small sign! I think every user here feels like I do that this is a great program. If you feel you need to charge to provide reliable support, then do so. But limbo does not reflect well on your company.
- for me too LS is no longer working under Snow Leopard. Come on Microsoft, that shouldn't be so hard to fix. I guess if that error would have happened in the Windows world, we had a fix within days. Unfortunately I'm on a Mac as you guys are - and MS will not push development of that platform for strategical reasons ...just my 2 cts
- How much longer till we get any word on this, or has Microsoft decided to kill the program.
Michael - It sounds like Microsoft is "dogfooding" this product on the Mac platform (Microsoft's Sidekick/Pink problems blamed on dogfooding and sabotage). This company successfully took the knife, execution style, to the Sidekick last week . This product, formerly known as "FolderShare" is probably on of the next in Microsoft's Death Row. It's just convenient that Snow Leopard is an early contributing factor to its demise.RIP, Live Sync for Mac... We'll miss you.

I can't be sure it is being killed, and I can't be sure it isn't being killed.
I was pretty sure many things would break upgrading to Snow Leopard though... Just like I was pretty sure things would break upgrading to 10.5 from 10.4, 2000 to XP, XP to Vista, and i'm pretty sure there will be issues on upgrading Vista to Windows 7. Oh, and I expect upgrading XP to Windows 7 to be just as bad.
The whole "Windows Live" services section appears to be merging, so though Live Sync might be going bye-bye... I imagine the service Live Sync provided will be rolled up into a new product/service Microsoft will likely launch after the release of Windows 7.
Which is just around the corner... I don't expect Microsoft to get to this issue with Live Sync and OS 10.6 until probably Late November to about Mid January.
Just remember... I can't really be sure.- How can you be so sure it isn't being killed if the only thing we've seen is a non-official newsgroup post and nothing from the Live Sync team? Microsoft has killed bigger products in the past with promises that it wouldn't. (PlaysForSure comes to mind)
I have some sources. Of course, I can't say that I *am* sure since my sources could be wrong and things can certainly change.

- While PowerFolder looks interesting, it also looks way to expensive. The free part only allows 5 GB sync. If you need more than the 5 GB, then the next level is $89.99 for 100 GB per year. I know I need more than 5 GB, but cannot see spending that much money per year for this program.
Michael - That is for the ONLINE storage portion. There's no limits for the peer-to-peer (but that may be LOCAL peer-to-peer only). I like Live Sync WAY better than PowerFolder but PF is the closest alternate as far as I've found (I tried and dumped SugarSync).

I noticed also there will be an update to Sync in a couple of days. The Windows Live Sync team blog posted the following announcement today:Soon [This Thursday], when you sign in to Windows Live Sync on your computers running Windows, you’ll see that you need to go to the Sync website to install an update. You won’t be able to use Sync until you install the update.
In case you’re wondering, this update fixes a serious compatibility problem with Windows Easy Transfer.
Similar to Live Mesh, Apple’s recent update of their OS to Snow Leopard also broke Windows Live Sync for Mac. However, based on the comments from Rachel Popkin from the Windows Live Sync team, “a version of Windows Live Sync for Mac that is compatible with Snow Leopard is coming very soon.”
Still no words on when Sync will support synchronisation to the cloud with SkyDrive, similar to how Live Mesh syncs your files onto Live Desktop.

Can't wait for it!!! finally!!!
- This was not an upgrade for those using Snow Leopard. However, they did say that was coming very soon. I just wonder what their definition of "very soon" is.
- If you check, that "Very Soon" statement from Rachel Popkin was 30 days ago. I wouldn't hold my breath. Unless some from the Live Sync Team updates us with a little more concrete information.
There is no new info; the new Windows version fixes a Windows problem and has nothing to do with the Mac OS X version. If you check, that "Very Soon" statement from Rachel Popkin was 30 days ago. Actually it was made on the Live Sync blog 3 days ago by Rachel Popkin after they announced the Windows update on the blog and in response to Robby and Justin. I just hope the update for Snow Leopard will not have the problems that the Windows update has seemingly has had.

- Karl - I have just noticed the same problem. It's a bummer;
I think their view of "very soon" must be a different definition than what I would define as "very soon." I do actually wish they would do it very soon but Leopard has been out over a couple of months now and still nothing in sight for making live sync work with it.

- OK. We had a "Very Soon" 43 days ago, and another 13 days ago. We should be due for another "Very Soon" in another 17 days.

It goes in unordered primes? Cool!- Hi, This can be the solution:https://www.getdropbox.com/It works as good as WLSync, and it's free too.Sorry MS... i'm an early user of foldershare, then WLS, but i can't wait you'll wake up.

It is free as long as you sync less than 2 gig. To go above the 2 gig limit, then you must pay. For the amount I was syncing, I would have to pay $20 a month. It is a good program otherwise.
Michael- It's posted!Just checked today and a new version is available and I am now back to syncing on 10.6.x.Woot.Version: 14.0.8096.0903

- Is it just me, or is this new version ...slow.... Since I'm re-attaching my Mac to my sync farm, it creates the individual p2p files first, one at a time.... one per second..... .... .... ... it hasn't started syncing.... .... .... .... .... ... .... ..... zzzzz...
.... wake me up when it's done..... zzzzz
