Why am I getting a pop up for "Windows Live Toolbar Elevator helper is not working"?  When I select the check online for a solution button, nothing happens.  What do I need to do to fix this annoying problem?  It just started today when I booted up and is recurring approx once every minute.

Thanks for sharing your experience, verdandiwine.

Anyone experiencing the error, try going to the Toolbar options - click the icon next to your name in the upper right on the toolbar, and then Toolbar options.
Click on the Sync your Favorites item on the left. If the button on the right says "Stop..." - click it to stop synchronizing the favorites to see if this resolves the problem.

If it says "Start Automatic Sync" don't start it, but it blows my theory on the cause of the problem.

Mine is doing the same thing.  Just started today.  Search for solution directed me to this site.  I don't see a solution.  Ran Webroot (indicated I was adding 30 favorites, but I wasn't????), and Trent Anti-virus.  Restarted.  Did clear "Temp. Internet Files" and message hasn't appeared for a while.  Fingers crossed that it is gone.  Very annoying!

I've never heard of this error, nor do I have a clue what that component is!
Are you synchronizing favorites with the Toolbar? What operating system and which version of IE are you using? Do you have any other toolbars or add-ins installed?

Thanks for responding.  I'm using Windows Vista with IE8.  I wasn't synchronizing but ever since that message started popping up, everything I save to my Favorites is also synched!  So odd.  I've rebooted twice but haven't cleared my cache.  Think I'll try that now.    I don't have any add-ins except my Google toolbar.

Well, deleting all the temp internet files didn't work.  I'm about ready to uninstall it and start over again.

It has been several hours since I had the pop-up appear.  It was happening every few minutes - sometimes more often.  I am not syncing (that I know of) and I am running Vista with IE8.  I ran Webroot Spy Sweeper, Trend Security, removed Windows Live from Tool bar at top, emptied Temp. Internet Files, restarted, ran a "Repair" that I somehow found on computer, and I think that is all.  So far, something I did seems to have worked.  Perhaps it was a fluke of something that was going on yesterday.  Good luck to anyone who has this annoying thing happen!

I just started having this issue as well. Last night (around 11:30pm EST), when the error came up, I clicked through it, and it deleted all of my favorites! Now all of my favorites are gone.

    I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit RTM.

I just started having the problem last night but wasn't using the computer much so didn't bother with it.  Today is a different story however.  It's very annoying to have this error message come up every few seconds.  I've tried removing the toolbar and doing a repair of Windows Live Essentials in the control panel to no avail.  Deleting the temp files did nothing as well.  I'm sorry about what happened to your favorites but your post gave me an idea.  When I read your issue I decided to remove my favorites and since doing so I haven't had the problem.  I created a folder on the desktop and copied my favorites to it because I certainly don't want to lose them all as you did efrant.  I then deleted all my favorites and that's where I am now.   I've been free from that stupid error message for nearly 30 minutes now!!!  My intention is to move my favorites back a few at a time until I find the culprit.

BTW - you may want to check the recycle bin just in case your favorites are there.

Your experience sounds very much like you have/or had Favorites Sync enabled in the WL Toolbar. I'm sorry to read that it seems to have deleted your Favorites. However, you should be able to find them in the Recycle Bin if the Sync process (which is Live Sync) deleted them.
Also, check if your Favorites are available by signing into http://skydrive.live.com

A quick update.  I moved all my favorites back from my temporary desktop folder into my favorites folder a few at a time until they were all moved back and I'm still error message free.  Whatever initially triggered the error message last night seems to be gone and, finally, the error message itself appears to be gone for good as well.  :)

STEVE, you are  better than the invention of sliced bread.  I have been 30 minutes and free of this irritating little bug.  I did nothing to bring it on as yesterday I worked my comp, put it to bed, woke up this morning with this bug.  I call my daughter as she took that Cisco networking course and is Dean of two technical colleges and she tells me that she had heard on the news this morning something about windows having a problem.  Maybe this was it.  But I do not have it as we speak.  I would love to have your email to contact you personally but I know that probably is not proper.  Just a Thank You I guess will have to do.

When you refer to going to the "Toolbar" options, is it the Windows Live toolbar?  I have disabled that and error message has stopped.  I'm afraid to use the add-on again for fear the message will start.  I do think I was synching favorites, but without the Windows Live Toolbar, haven't I essentially disabled the synching?  What exactly am I missing if I don't use  the Windows Live Toolbar?

Thanks, my favorites are indeed in Skydrive.

So, have we come up with the cause of the issue? Is the solution to just not sync favorites? Should we switch to the Google toolbar to sync bookmarks? *joking* :)

Did you resolve it by disabling Favorites Sync or did it stop on its own?

Yes, the little box with a checkmark in the Windows Live Toolbar next to your signin information.
Hmmmm.... based on the responses so far, it sure seems like something broke with that feature for some people. It's an odd error and one I've not seen. Nor have I ever heard of the component that the error references.
Yes, by doing "stop" in the toolbar options, you have disabled Favorites sync.
What you can do, for safety, is to open Windows Explorer and navigate to your Favorites folder and make a copy of the whole folder.
    In XP: \Documents and Settings\{windows login account}\Favorites
    In Vista and Win7: \Users\{windows login account}\Favorites
Copy the whole folder to the desktop or your documents folder and then turn the sync back on. If the error stops - golden. If it starts again, at least your Favorites are safe for the time being.

I don't know that we know the cause or the solution, but it sure looks like the error has something to do with the Sync functionality.

What's interesting is that it seem to happen to a group of us all at once (prob over the course of a few hours), despite us using it and none of us having issues with it before. Anyway, thanks for all your help.

That tells me that the problem, assuming that it was with the sync of Favorites via the Toolbar, may have been server side and specific to the server or servers used by the accounts affected. My SkyDrive/Favorites account may point to a different server than yours, for example. Whatever was wrong (or is still wrong) manifested itself by causing the Toolbar to toss an error up constantly because the "helper" had no idea how to deal with the condition.
I've sent an email to my MVP Lead, in hopes that he can get someone from the Windows Live team responsible for the Toolbar to have a look at this issue. I'll let you know if I learn anything. :-)

    Hi all,

steve pointed me over to this thread as i was running into similar problems. With me it manifested a little different. Here's my original post:

I have a few live accounts (one private, one for business, etc). The problem i'm faced with now is that after letting the pc run for a night while apperently being logged on with my business live account in the live toolbar all my favorites have gone missing. They're normally synced with my personal account, and the sky drive favorites folder for my personal account still seems to have them all, but somehow i can't get them back on the PC. I've had IE8 open all day with my personal account logged on, but so far nothing seems to have happened. Is there any way i can force a sync with the skydrive?

I fixed it now by just downloading the favorites (great idea to add the dl as zip btw) and extracting them back into my favorites folder. What was a bit odd though was that it took me about 4 tries to extract them. Initially it just extracted one folder (using winrar btw), but each time after that (when extracting directly to the favorites folder) it said everything went fine, but nothing changed. Only until i extracted them to another directory and moved them to the favorites folder they where actually 'there' again. Not sure if this just a one-off thing or related.

Btw, steve, if you or any of the guys at MS need my live account info to track this issue, i'll be glad to provide.

    Kind regards,
    Philipp

Thanks for coming over here, Philipp. And I appreciate the offer. My contact has advised me that he's forwarded the information about this problem and the links I sent for the threads referencing it on to the program group. Hopefully we can get an answer and if they need some more information they or I will post back here.

I have Win 7 Ult 64 Bit and I am receiving the same error as well.  It started after I ran the latest updates last night.  The funny thing was that when I logged into my work computer today which is a different computer my favorites were gone there too and would not sync.  So even though all my favorites are still in my skydrive they are not syncing to my other non win 7 64 bit machines.  My work machine is Win XP pro.

Waiting with everyone else I guess for an update.

    thanks

I started getting the message popping up a few days ago, I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and IE8.  It seemed like it started after I applied the latest update for IE8 that was released a few days ago, but I do not know if that is related, as I have not had the issue on my second computer running Vista Home Premium 32-bit and IE8 with the same update-- however this one uses a different Live ID.

I also lost a few favorites, not all of them.  I thought it was just me at first until I read the other reports here.  Restoring from SkyDrive fixed those, but did not stop the problem as someone suggested.  It did have trouble extracting one favorite due to a character in the page title.  I haven't tried renaming this favorite or removing it to see if the issue is related with syncing at all; I have turned off the auto-sync of favorites and so far it has yet to resurface.

It started happening to me last night, don't know why, didn't change any settings and don't know how to make it stop.  It's really anoying , I'll be right in the middle of typing an e-mail or another project and it just freezes while this thing flashes across the screen 'checking for a solution' and then says 'no solution found' CLOSE PROGRAM.  I keep trying to close the program and it still keeps happening,  I've exited windows live messenger and I'm not running any other 'live' programs at this time, there it went again right in the middle of typing.  What can I do to make it stop?????  Uninstall all microsoft live stuff??  Office Live workspace & messenger??  Does anyone have any suggestions, keep going in circles trying to find answers on Bing or Google.  Most of it is geek to me, so I dont understand half of what they are saying.  I think they(microsoft) does this on purpose to frustrate we peons who just use computers but aren't really into them and don't understand.  It's like my car, I want to turn the key and have it run, I don't need to know how it runs as long as it runs, same with my computer, JUST FIX IT!!

I would like to add an additional observation.  I received the same error message and allowed windows to try and fix it.  Now when I open Internet Explorer, my Live toolbar no longer allows me to sign in.  I can click on the button and nothing happens.  However, if I open a new window from within the current IE session I am able to sign in.  The sync feature is still not working with the favorites, but I can at least get to my skydrive a little easier without having to memorize the URL.

    Windows 7 Pro/64
    IE 8

Thanks everyone for your additional observations and experiences. I have yet to hear back on the issue, but clearly there appears to be something going on with Sync for Favorites for some users. It appears to be any OS, so I don't know that the problem is specific to any updates. It may be a server problem in the environment where the account information for affected users is located.
As soon as I hear anything else, I'll be sure to post back here.
In the meantime, disable the Favorites Sync per the above and if your Favorites are gone, first check your Recycle Bin and restore from there or go to http://skydrive.live.com and sign in to download your favorites manually back to the PC.

Since you encountered the problem after the update was installed, *and* the PC was rebooted, it could have been due to either the update or the reboot. If you want to try to isolate the problem, perhaps the following steps are in order:
    1. enable Favorites Sync
    2. Reboot again
    3. Does the error again appear?

If yes, uninstall the latest IE patch and reboot
       Error gone?
    -or-
If no, (following the reboot of #2) with the latest patch installed and no errors, check to see if the favorites are still there and    synchronizing

I too have experienced this problem.  In fact I was basically watched as all of my favorites disappeared.  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit but I also am running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit on another machine at this point those do not seem to have disappeared.  I tried to sync my favoirtes on a Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine and it acts like everything is good but never updates the favorites, same as the original machine I lost them on.  This happened around the same time everyone else seems to have noticed it so something out there is eating our favorites ... LOL.  I do however still have all mine in the Skydrive folder so that is a good thing.  Anybody find any fixes or solutions to this issue yet ...??

Thanks, Stephen, I am not getting an error though.  Apparently that is one thing I am not getting or at least yet.  I just had my favorites disappear and can not seem to restore them from the skydrive to my favorites or to any new machine from skydrive.  I am not currently at that machine but will check when I get home if they are actually in my recydle bin.  Thanks ...

I haven't heard back directly, but this was just posted to the Windows Live Wire Blog:

Favorites syncing on Windows Live Toolbar temporarily turned off

For anyone who uses the “favorites sync” feature on Windows Live Toolbar, we have an important notice. We’ve heard from some customers in the last 24 hours that in some cases, favorites have been removed from the Toolbar when they synced from one or more of their PCs. We have investigated, and we want to assure you, that if this is occurring for you, your favorites are still available on SkyDrive at http://favorites.live.com.  We apologize for this inconvenience and are diligently working on a fix to restore favorites from SkyDrive to your PC.

    Hi all,

ever since this problem with the syncing of the favorites i've run into another problem, i can't create new favorites. I'm not sure if the two are related or not, but if someone could check on their own system that had the favorites removed as well i would appreciate it. Here's the error message i receive when trying to add a new favorite:

    Unable to create '<Favorite Name>'

    Unspecified Error

When i browse to the favorites folder i can manually create the favorites, just not from IE8.

    Kind regards,
    Philipp

    Sorry Philipp,
I test my system to see if your problem had the same effect on mine. Nope, I can create new favorites and save them. Did you follow the above solution for getting your favorites back? It worked on my system and so far, I haven't had the problem again.

    Hi Doug,

yeah i disabled the favorites syncing in the toolbar and dl'ed the favorites from skydrive to restore them. Well thanks for testing at least, perhaps the issues are unrelated then, just strange they occured at the same time.

Apparently, Favorites Sync was enabled once again on the server side last night, 11/10/09. However, a new post today: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wlevents/thread/589c6bb7-896d-4d37-ae9b-bd8aaa1e5369 indicates that the problem is apparently not resolved. So, if you are seeing the error in the subject or if your Favorites disappeared, see the other replies within the thread and disable Favorites Sync via the Toolbar options and it should resolve it for you. I will be contacting Microsoft again shortly.

Can somebody make a synthesis on how to solve this problem? I have a language problem. I am Italian.
    Is it a Server problem?
Is it an Internet Explore problem?
What is a favourites sinc? Is it on the toolbar? I cannot find it.

It is a server problem, Massimo. From my answer above: Anyone experiencing the error, try going to the Toolbar options - click the icon next to your name in the upper right on the toolbar, and then Toolbar options.
Click on the Sync your Favorites item on the left. If the button on the right says "Stop..." - click it to stop synchronizing the favorites to see if this resolves the problem.
I will use the Bing Translator and hope that it does a good job as your English is very good and I do not know any Italian!

    Translated:

Thank you for responding and translating too.
You do not need to translate. Only to be clear and syntethic, I think.
Server Problem...You mean that I have to inform the server of my Adsl?
About your suggestion to go on Toolbar Options: I do not find any Toolbar Option....Do you mean Favourites Toolbar? I can't find it.

The error message is from the Windows Live Toolbar, Massimo. Up on the right hand side of the toolbar, next to your signin name and icon is an icon with a check mark in it. Click that and at the bottom of the little panel that appears is "Toolbar options." Click that. A new window appears. The 3rd item down on the left says Sync your Favorites. Click that and then click the button "Stop Automatic Sync." The error message will stop appearing.
The symptom of the problem is an error message appearing that says: "Windows Live Toolbar Elevator helper is not working" and sometimes your Favorites disappear completely or randomly disappear. I think they fixed the deletion issue, but the error still affects some people.

    Hi Steve,

i was wondering if there's been any update on this issue? It's been a while and i'm beginning to really miss the synchronization across my different PC's.

    Kind regards,
    Philipp

They enabled Sync again, but if you are getting the error, leave it disabled for your account. I have not had any updates on the situation.

Sorry, I can't find the icon with a check mark in it.  Is this on the toolbar of one the Windows Live programs?  I can't see it in any of them.  Internet Explorer itself has simply started hanging since this problem began.

It is the icon u would use to add more buttons to your windows life toolbar.  If you don't see it, which is very obivious, then you must not have the windows live toolbar.  There is the the buttons to miminize your screen or make it full and then the Red letter which does not work on my computer, then the google search on mine and then right under that.

If you don't see that, then look for a windows live toolbar, search for it...............

Are you getting the error message about the Elevation Helper not working? If so, the icon I am describing is on the Windows Live Toolbar. If it isn't displayed or active, and you are getting this error, I don't know why you are encountering the error as the sync process will only work if it is active, visible, and you are logged in.

It's that little icon shown to the left of my name in the first image below:

And after your click it and then click "Toolbar Options" from the dropdown that appears on clicking that icon, the next window appears. Click on "Sync your favorites" and then the button on the right that says "Stop automatic sync"

Ok, sorry...Now I did find it and I did disable the sinc.
In ten minutes the message did appear one time.
I think I will restart the pc and then see.
I will inform you if everything is ok.
    Thank you for you kindness,
    Massimo

You're welcome, Massimo. I should have thought to post the images earlier. I finally did today after someone else reported the error, but not knowing where the icon was.

I also have had this problem for approx the last week and have stopped auto snnc as suggested but this has failed to fix the problem. Recently I lost some of my favorites. I assume they are flying about in cyber space. I have Google toolbar and Windows Live toolbar running on IE 8.0.6001.18829. My operating system is Vista Home Premium.

Are you sure that you stopped the sync of Favorites? That's the cause of the error.
As for the lost favorites, they can be found in your Favorites folder at http://skydrive.live.com or in the recycle bin on your PC.
