windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices
- so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.
i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)
so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in
i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.
eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!- Edited byspedlifeslow Friday, May 22, 2009 5:39 AMtypo in title

Hello All,
Thank you for using Microsoft Answers forums. I suggest you go to the manufactures web site and download the Windows 7 drivers. It they do not have Windows 7 drivers try using the drivers for Vista. Most hardware and drivers that worked with Vista will work with Windows 7. Windows 7 is still in Release Candidate. The current release is for testing purposes. All the features and other options have not been fully program and released yet. It is the responsibility of the manufacture to provide drivers for their hardware. Thank you for your time and efforts in evaluating Windows 7.
Thanks for using the Answers Forum. Please let us know how this works out.

- also to further clarify things... this problem is in reference to connecting the computer to an hd tv.
i have the intel integrated 965; i was running vista, and everything worked fine then, it showed the hdmi device in the playback devices
now i have nothing besides the sigmatel pc speakers in the playback devices - I have the same problem. I connect my Dell XPS 1530 laptop to my Samsung hdtv and I get video but no audio. The sound controller says that the hdmi output is working, but there is no sound. Spent the last couple of days installing new drivers and to no avail. Samsung claims that its a problem with my video card??? They say that my model of Samsung tv can only handle pcm over hdmi and that i should check with my video card manufacturer. The setup that I use to connect my tv with my laptop has worked flawlessly for about a year and the audio problem cropped up only two days ago. It may be a compatibility issue with my tv because I used the same hdmi cable with a different hdtv and the audio worked. Please help...I am out of ideas.

- i have downloaded the latest drivers from intel... i have reinstalled them several times
i have a laptop, my card is the intel 965, and i use one cable for hdmi...
there is no HDMI device that appears when i right click the sound icon to choose the playback devices
there used to be one in vista... which used to output hdmi audio
is anyone else having this problem? (yoshifizzle, are you and i having different problems? where do you see your device... mine does appear in the device manager, and is listed as working correctly... however as stated above gthe device does not appear when right clicking the icon in the taskbar) - Drivers can be tricky sometimes, try this go to device manager and uninstall the driver then using the drivers that you downloaded from intel install them and check the results.
Let me know if this helps. - This is not a problem with your system or drivers guys. Its a flaw with Windows 7. I was running Vista with my laptop outputting Video / Audio to my TV and it worked great. I upgraded to Windows 7 RC1 and the sound doesnt work (video is fine). Looks like we are all stuck with PC speakers or headphones until they put the real version of Windows 7 out. When I select the HDMI audio output, things like Windows media player / itunes wont even play tracks. The second I hit speakers / headphones, both programs fire up and play.
I have a homemade PC with onboard Sigmatel audio and an nVidia GTX260 graphics card... I'm using a S/PDIF passthrough from the motherboard to the graphics card, and audio is passed to the TV.
I did have one problem... When I upgraded the video card driver, I was not prompted for a reboot; however, my system required a reboot before the audio started working again.
I can play tracks from Zune, and system sounds also come through. I also have a Dell XPS1530, and Samsung LCD. With Win7 Beta, it worked. I haven't yet tried with Win7 RC.
I didn't really have to configure anything to get it to work... It just did. Guess I was lucky, but this is not necessarily an inherent flaw with the Win7 RC.- this seems pretty common with dell xps 1530 - my sound worked fine with the beta(s) and doesn't output at all via hdmi. normal sound works fine.
I have tried multiple drivers no luck just yet - any one got any ideas, versions that do work for this machine? - I have the same issue with a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ440e(nvidia geforce 8400gt video card). The video works fine trough HDMI but no audio.
- I have the same problem with an Inspiron. It worked fine under vista, and worked fine under win7 after the install, but suddenly stopped working yesterday.
I tried removing the drivers and manually installing the Dell Vista drivers but it did not work. - Same problem with Sony Vaio Z27GN. Windows 7 RTM.
- Same problem with home built system - HDMI video works fine but no audio, everything worked under Vista. Oh and by the way its not a driver problem. From this list anyone can see that its right across the board with differernt motherboards and different graphics card.
Please MS take this seriously!! and don't just dismiss us with dumb platitudes blaming hardware manufacturers - this is exactly what we're supposed to be doing. - I have the exact same problem and this is RTM now, so they did not fix it from RC! I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW370J running Windows7 x64 Ultimate RTM from Technet. In Vista x64, I had the HDMI audio as a 2nd playback device to choose from in Audio properties but now all I have is the Realtek notebook speaker card listed. Under device manager, I do see Intel(r) High Definition Audio HDMI and it says its working properly but I can't access it no matter what even when HDMI is hooked up. I know this worked fine before Win7 so this is NOT a driver issue. From all the posts I'm seeing above, this is a Windows 7 issue and Microsoft better address this, as this is no small matter! I will not settle for my audio playing through the laptop speakers while watching a blu-ray on a Samsung HDTV external display! If anyone finds any workarounds for this problem, PLEASE post here!
Thanks! Volcom, relax before you hurt yourself. :)
I have a home built PC, ASUS mainboard, Intel Core i7 proc, nVidia GTX260, some onboard audio chip or other with S/PDIF passthru to the video card. Hooked up to HDTV via HDMI. Audio works fine. If the issue were with Windows 7, my HDMI audio wouldn't work, either. (I'm running RC, x64.)
I've also got a Dell XPS 1530 w/ 8400GS and whatever audio chip they use. HDMI video and audio both work fine. (RC, x32)
I do believe it is a driver problem... Vista drivers FOR THE MOST PART work with Windows 7. That doesn't mean they all work perfectly. The same debacle plagued Vista... New/tweaks to the driver model, HW manufacturers weren't ready, so peripherals didn't work. Since that all changed with Vista, it got the blame. Reading the above posts, the one common element is that everyone having seems to be using Intel parts for audio or video... Maybe Intel drivers are the weak link?
Your Samsung TV, on HDMI2, has a separate analog input that you can use to pass audio from the laptop's headphone jack as a temporary workaround until this is solved.
As for getting digital audio output working via HDMI when watching Blu-Rays, that's something I set up in Cyberlink PowerDVD (what I use; not sure what you use)... And the HDMI option wasn't there until I started playing a disc. There was no sound, I stopped playback, went back to sound options, and there it was. Not sure why, probably funkiness with the driver. I don't know if you tried this, since your post didn't have much detail... Go to Control Panel, then Sound. In the case of my homebuilt machine, I have the following devices:
Speakers / High Definition Audio Device / Not plugged in
Headphones / High Definition Audio Device / Not plugged in
Digital Audio (S/PDIF) / High Definition Audio Device / Not plugged in
Digital Audio (HDMI) / High Definition Audio Device / Default Device
Look in your Sound control panel... Do you have an HDMI device there? If so, make it the default device, and then try your audio playback. If it doesn't work, make sure you have the latest drivers for your audio chip AND your video card.
If the HDMI device isn't there... I dunno, try reinstalling the audio chip and graphics card drivers.I for 1 use Razor HDMI headphones and the sounds come up fine for me. i also have the onboard audio ports hooked up to my surround sound system and i can swap sounds back and forth without problems and even run both at the same time (music on speakers games on headphones) all devices come up fine for me in the playback menu. Have you tried the showing disconnected devices?
RCx64- Good news! I talked to a friend that worked in the Windows 7 development at Microsoft and he had the same prob with 2 of his computers and figured out the solution. While it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, the HDMI Audio comes from the video card drivers. I went to Intel's website and chose my video card, and they had Windows 7 RC drivers up, I downloaded those and installed, rebooted and my HDMI audio is now back in the soundcard list and I tested it, worked great! So to all of you above, go get the latest video card drivers and try again. Worked for me!
Yes, video card drivers are important (as I stated above). Your video adapter is what outputs the HDMI signal... After all, it's producing the video. The audio gets to it from your sound card hooked up via a S/PDIF digital connection. This digital data is injected, by the video card, into the HDMI datastream. Therefore you need both your audio drivers (the sound card/chip is still required as the audio device), and the video drivers. HDMI as an audio device is actually courtesy of your video card due to the reason above.
Im using a spdif cable aswell hooked up to my nvidia 9500GT with HDMI running to the tv. I´m using vista but i don´t get the HDMI option displayed in the audio output deivce list. anyone?I have a homemade PC with onboard Sigmatel audio and an nVidia GTX260 graphics card... I updated the Sigmatel/SoundMAX audio drivers to beyond the generic drivers included with 7, and then found that HDMI disappeared from my audio devices list. The internal S/PDIF output on the motherboard/Sigmatel device is the "Digital Output". In the SoundMAX control panel program, you have three output devices to choose from: Speakers, Digital Output, and S/PDIF. "Digital Output" passed audio through to the HDMI port, and consequently, to the TV. I updated my nVidia card drivers to see if it'd put the HDMI device back (for the sake of labeling), but it didn't.

I didn't really have to configure anything to get it to work... It just did. Guess I was lucky, but this is not necessarily an inherent flaw with the Win7 RC.- The problem many of you are having is most likely due to the fact that Windows 7 doesn't support multiple outputs simultaneously (apparently Vista is the same way). You have to choose one output: hdmi, analog or spdif and that is all that will output. You can't run spdif to your receiver or tv and use headphones to listen to analog at the same time. I installed the latest Realtek drivers for 7 and it doesn't help. The problem is inherent in 7 which is a complete deal breaker for me. I'll stick to XP which does all I need it to and lets me configure the sound output to my needs without having to wade through menus and WMC setup to make a change every time I use a different device.

This sounds to me more like a limitation of your device/drivers, rather than Windows. Windows 7, as far as I can tell, works in a similar way to Windows XP: You pick a default device, and by default, all sounds get routed through it. If you have a program that can address a specific device (such as Winamp, when using DirectSound output), you can output to any device you want without changing the default. In fact, I have done this on my Windows 7 laptop... I connected an outboard audio adapter (Presonus Firebox), which has three stereo outputs; I set one to be the default, and set Winamp to use another. I was able to output sound from both, simultaneously.
As for whether your audio device will output sound from both analog out and S/PDIF, it sounds like that's a limitation of your device or your device driver, and not so much Windows 7. Try a Sound Blaster, or a studio-grade product such as M-Audio Audiophile, Presonus Firebox, Lynx, etc.
Hope this helps!
No it's not my devices. I have the same equipment I had with XP. It is the way 7 is designed (and from what I have heard, Vista also). Not familiar with your setup, but Winamp is not a device, it's software. I doubt your laptop has spdif out. If so, try running that and analog to another actual device and see for yourself.

By the way, there are threads about this on other forums. It's not conjecture, but fact.
- Hey all as the original poster of this topic i am still plagued by this problem...
I haven't had time to read all of these posts, but basically this seems to be a problem with the intel driver.
I have reinstalled the vista drivers, and they provide audio but are fairly buggy. The newest windows 7 on intel's website do not provide audio for me.
Have yet to root out the problem, and frankly the web has proved fruitless and frustrating.
If you are having the problem I described just install the vista drivers.
To clear something up i read about single channels (or something to that extent i read above) that is not a problem for me i can play audio over my speakers or headphones... there is no problem with the audio drivers... this is an HDMI issue. I had the same problem!!! The HDMI works well in xp but couldn't find the hdmi audio in Windows 7!!
It seems your video card is intel's card and you can find the updated driver, but my video card is nvidia 8600mgs, i downloaded several driver versions from nvidia but still cannot fix the problem!! I'm going to give up and roll back my laptop to xp or vista. Windows 7 disappointed me!!Update your laptop's audio driver to the latest Vista/7 driver. Most of them come with some sort of control program/mixer where you can choose which output device you want to use. The internal S/PDIF connection between the audio and video devices probably is one of the options on that list, even if "HDMI" doesn't show up.
- What's the point of this Microsoft??? No one has replied to our repeated postings only to whine that it's someone else's fault again. Its NOT the hardware - repeatedly people have told you that their hardware worked with XP and Vista, as did mine, then bang! Win7 kicks out the audio but leaves the video on HDMI. I have tried everything on my machine and recently did a brand new build using the the rtmf Win 7 Professional download - SAME PROBLEM - downloaded the latest nvidia drivers, no change.
You think I'm going to buy a copy of Win7? not likely. Why don't you investigate properly your customer complaints instead of passing it back to us or the hardware vendors?
When will you change into a customer oriented company - when ____ freezes over I guess.

Robin, to whom are your histrionics directed? I have no association with Microsoft, but I'll answer your question with a question. My laptop (Dell w/ nVidia 8400GS) and my desktop (homebuild w/ nVidia GTX260) both work just fine with HDMI audio. If the problem is with Windows 7, and not your hardware, then why does HDMI audio work flawlessly with my computers?
It's easy for one to assume that, since they updated from a previous version of the OS to the new version, and things stopped working, that it's Microsoft's fault. Well... It partly is. Windows XP, Vista, and 7, all use slightly different driver models. When the way the OS interacts with hardware drivers changes, this can make the drivers not work properly. Therefore, it is on the hardware manufacturers to update their drivers to work properly with the new OS. It'd be great if the grand vision for the original WDM were to hold true: "This is our driver model, and it won't change."
But it doesn't. The driver model gets updated, and now drivers are broken. Some manufacturers are better about updating their drivers than others. Since Win7 isn't even officially out yet, HW manufacturers are not really on the hook yet to have their drivers working flawlessly.
I'm not saying that my posts are the pinnacle of edification, but if you read over them, I've repeated ad nauseum the different ways I've gotten things to work with my systems.
If you can post some details about your system (notably the mobo model, video card model, etc.), and steps you've taken to get it going, maybe I can help guide you. What's the point of this Microsoft??? Adam, which version you're using for your laptop (Dell w/ nVidia 8400GS) ? I guess my 8600gs should be similar to yours. How many sound devices in the device manager?- Actually I've been to the nvidia forum, some guys said the 182.xx driver can fix the problem, some guys said the beta 190.xx can fix the problem, I tried, but no luck. So tired about this stupid problem!

I'm using Windows 7 RC x32 on my laptop; nVidia driver version is 186.03. In the Sound control panel I have the following devices:
Speakers; Speakers; Digital Audio (HDMI). Under Device Manager, I have "High Definition Audio Device" under Sound, and "NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS" under Display Adapters.
This has always worked on the laptop, so I haven't been down the road of troubleshooting it. The desktop PC was a little trickier.- welll, guys its done.. i got it worked after frustrating spending couple of hrs to figure wht was wrng. though pure try and error method.
well,
in empty space of playback devices right click and use the option to show all disabled devices, it popped up with digital output HDMI.
now in the properties of this driver i saw the driver which did stated tht it works fine but then i saw the name of sound driver company.
in my case the sound card was of sigmatel but the company named is IDT.
went to IDT website and there i downloaded the high definition audio driver from there.
after that i again saw the playback devices and there voila !!! the digital HDMI output option was there > again right click and set as default communication device
now it works jst awesome and as stated somewhere that u need revert back to original settings and all , u dnt need to do tht, this takes as 2 different output options so no conflicting outputs or so.
now i can say windows 7 rocks..!!
thnx all. - welll, guys its done.. i got it worked after frustrating spending couple of hrs to figure wht was wrng. though pure try and error method.

thnx all. - Thanks abhishekm30 . I had the same problem (HDMI audio not plugged in) on a sony vaio vgn-fw398y with a readon hd 3650. I updated the Realtek driver.

Matias Rodriguez - This is not a Windows 7 Problem, I had this problem when I upgraded my laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 from Windows Vista to Windows 7.. After the upgrade I was able to view the picture on my samsung LCD but there was no sound
I had sigmatel Audio in my notebook
i found the driver from Intel Web site for Intel 965 Chipset
you can download it from there web site and it works
It will take time for vendors to catch up!! - Had the same problem on an HP HDX16 laptop, no sound over HDMI under Windows 7 (although it worked fine under the factory-installed Vista). A quick visit to NVIDIA's website and a download of the latest version of their driver software for the video card installed the necessary HD audio drivers too, and the Sound tabs now include HDMI audio and it is working fine. (Still gotta work out how to get AC3 and DTS passthrough working, but one step at a time eh?)
Andre Thanks abhishekm30 . I had the same problem (HDMI audio not plugged in) on a sony vaio vgn-fw398y with a readon hd 3650. I updated the Realtek driver.
Yep, this did the trick for me. I have a system built on a Gigabyte board with the ATI HD 3200 integrated graphics chip. It worked great with Vista, but as soon as I upgraded to 7, no HDMI audio when watching HD tv. The audio worked with SD, but not HD. Upgrading the HDMI audio device did the trick. I also upgraded the graphics driver, Realtek audio drivers, and the driver for my Hauppage tuner card as well.

The solution was "un-update" the newest driver from Nvidia, install again the version that came with the pc (http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/R200184.EXE ).
it works for me.
(sorry for my english) - For those with Nvidia.... This may sound super simple but what fixed the issues for me was moving the cable to the other connection. For what ever reason the newer drivers dont recognize the output I had used for years.
- Having the same issue as everyone one else where no audio is coming through the hdmi connection but here is the odd thing. Earlier in the year when the beta for 7 came out, no issues with the audio through hdmi. Since then, I have done a factory restore on my Sony vgn-fz260e but nothing else with drivers. Now that the retail version of 7 is out, i'm running into this issue. Updated all the video and sound drivers off of Sony's site (cause the drivers from Nvidia for my geforce 8400m gt says that they are already updated) didn't help. I'm noticing that a lot of people ran into this with RC but not much now that the retail version is out. Just checking if anyone has some more ideas.
- Your advise is useless, I hope your not getting paid for this. Who is your supervisor, or do you have to push me enough to get together a paper trail big enough to get you replaced. I would suggest you do your job and assist these people in getting the answers they are seeking. This isn't a specific driver issue. You should escalate this to someone who earns their paycheck.
I agree thinkingbiggar. I was accused of having a hissy fit when I complained but I thought like you that this was a feedback board to MS developers - but its just a place to capture problems and keep them quiet.
The reality is that this problem has dogged beta and final versions of 7 - is not restricted to one manufacturer or graphics engine and all we get is ""its a driver issue". Well who is investigating the issue ? what further investigation has been done with anyone on this board who has reported a problem? I for one will no longer champion MS - they sell u stuff then leave you to hang. Just look at the number of postings and we are just the tip of the iceberg because we have enough nounce to try and troubleshoot - the average joe doesn't know that this board exists!- +1. I have the same problem with Windows 7.0. It worked before on Vista without any problem but it does not work now. I have Dell 1530 + Samsung TV. When I read these posts I understood that it is only wasting my time to find this answer as this is not driver or hardware problem but really Windows 7.0 problem as I tried everything. So, the result is the same - video works fine but audio does not. :(

This is really problem of Windows Media Player. I've solved the problem in the following way. Whatever you select as defualt communication device on the sound icon in the right bottom corner it does not help. Here are steps that helped me:
1) Start Windows Media Player on any video file
2) Make sure that you can see the video and sound on the laptop.
3) Right mouse click on Windows Media Player area (on video)
More options->Devices tab -> Select Speakers in the list of Devices -> click the properties button
4) In the pop-uo modal window "Speaker Properties" -> Select the audio device: => Select "Digital Audio (HDMI) (2-High Definition Audio Device)" ( on my laptop )
5) Save all window
6) Close and restart Windows Media Player
7) Connect HDMI cable and swith on TV to get video from HDMI
The sound + video works fine on my TV.
If you want to get back audio on your laptop you should do back process and select "Speakers / Headphones ..." in Windows Media Player :)
By using this not very conveniant way I can switch audit to HDMI... It looks like problem with Windows Media Player + Windows 7.0, hope Microsoft will fix it in the RCxxx.- Proposed As Answer byEfraín Morales Monday, November 02, 2009 5:48 AM
- @robin, cver, and thinkingbiggar,
Please, just answer for yourself this one question: If the problem is Windows 7, then why do I have HDMI audio working flawlessly on two different computers, both running 7 RC?
Hint: I don't work at Microsoft, and I have no affiliation with the company. I've received no technical support from anyone on the inside.
In any case, this thread has devolved to a bunch of feel-bad slamming, so I will no longer be monitoring it. (Don't bother replying to this message, because I won't see it.) - Hi Cver1968:
I also have a Dell XPS M1530 and had the same problem making a Custom install from Vista Ultimate 32 to Windows 7 Pro 32. I uninstalled the generic driver installed by W7 and from Dell, downloaded and installed driver R190517 version 6.10.0.5866. That is the Sigmatel HD Audio CODEC for the integrated Sound Blaster Audigy card on the M1530. Thisl sets everything prior to W7. Please try it, for it will work.
Efrain Morales - Hi,
I'm having the same problem, and have been on the phone with both Microsoft and Hp all day trying to solve it. I have an HP Pavilion dv4-1125nr laptop and am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I use to be able to get video and audio while running Vista, but I'am only able to receive video now when I plug my laptop in to my Panasonic tv through the HDMI cord with Windows 7. I have used all the suggestions in this thread: updating the audio drivers, updating the video drivers and nothing seems to work. I am still not able to see the HDMI out option on the Playback device option after right clicking on Sound. I have looked up in device manager which Audio drivers I am currently using and it is IDT Audio driver and a Intel High Definition (HDMI) driver. On Hp.com under the support and drivers for my laptop they only have the IDT drivers which I have installed, and on Intel they do not have an update for their driver. I have also updated my video driver which is also Intel, nothing seems to work, even though your previous suggestions seemed to have worked for others, they haven't for me. After nine hours on the phone, being transfered between HP and Microsoft I am losing hope, PLEASE HELP. Thank you before hand for any suggestions. - Hello windows 7 team:
This is my first Post here , and i'm confident this may be the fix for you. vaio vgnfw370j with vista x64 my hdmi audio out never gave me problems, but after upgrading to win7ultimate i lost that functionality. my intel driver was from 2008, no update available... finally after a reinstall of driver with no results i said screw this...
1) back up your current driver if you're scared
2) uninstall driver and select remove driver files
3) scan for hardware changes, win7 will install a generic hdmi audio driver, (dated 2009)
my hdmi audio instantly worked
good luck
update
after reading some threads up above, i want to recommend that you do a manufacturer search for updated drivers before using my method. in my case, with intel/hdmi built in to motherboard, no updated driver was available. i wouldnt be surprised if it also worked on other devices that weren't functioning properly. - Thanks AJbx, that worked perfectly. Great suggestion.
Thanks again. - Thanks for that, worked for me too, its the only thing that has worked so far.
- After about the 7th time trying this, my computer finally got the hint and uninstalled the SigmaTel driver and installed the general Microsoft one dated 7/13/2009. All my devices appear again under the Playback Devices. The other driver was dated 2/19/2008 and produced by IDT. I'm no Microsoft proponent myself, but after almost giving up, I'm gonna say it's a driver problem on the audio manufacturer's side. IDT just points their finger to your OEM but it doesn't help if it the same version or a year and a half old.

I had the same problem with my HD TV after upgrading to Windows 7. What I did was updated the drives to my chipset. I learned on here that with HMDI you need to have your Video card updated and not by microsoft. You need to go to the manufacturer web site and download it directly from there. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with an Intel 965 chipset and once I updated to the windows 7 driver from intel, everything started to work. I did this on 11/20/09 and as soon as I hooked back up to my HD TV in the sound box it also showed the HDMI TV connection. Then I made it my default sound choice and low and behold I was so happy to have sound. Worked on this for two nights and it still amazes me that microsoft updates would not catch this. Thats the problem with being a pioneer in electronics. We get to solve their issues.
