windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices
- so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.
i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)
so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in
i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.
eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!- Edited byspedlifeslow Friday, May 22, 2009 5:39 AMtypo in title

Hello All,
Thank you for using Microsoft Answers forums. I suggest you go to the manufactures web site and download the Windows 7 drivers. It they do not have Windows 7 drivers try using the drivers for Vista. Most hardware and drivers that worked with Vista will work with Windows 7. Windows 7 is still in Release Candidate. The current release is for testing purposes. All the features and other options have not been fully program and released yet. It is the responsibility of the manufacture to provide drivers for their hardware. Thank you for your time and efforts in evaluating Windows 7.
Thanks for using the Answers Forum. Please let us know how this works out.

- also to further clarify things... this problem is in reference to connecting the computer to an hd tv.
i have the intel integrated 965; i was running vista, and everything worked fine then, it showed the hdmi device in the playback devices
now i have nothing besides the sigmatel pc speakers in the playback devices - I have the same problem. I connect my Dell XPS 1530 laptop to my Samsung hdtv and I get video but no audio. The sound controller says that the hdmi output is working, but there is no sound. Spent the last couple of days installing new drivers and to no avail. Samsung claims that its a problem with my video card??? They say that my model of Samsung tv can only handle pcm over hdmi and that i should check with my video card manufacturer. The setup that I use to connect my tv with my laptop has worked flawlessly for about a year and the audio problem cropped up only two days ago. It may be a compatibility issue with my tv because I used the same hdmi cable with a different hdtv and the audio worked. Please help...I am out of ideas.

- i have downloaded the latest drivers from intel... i have reinstalled them several times
i have a laptop, my card is the intel 965, and i use one cable for hdmi...
there is no HDMI device that appears when i right click the sound icon to choose the playback devices
there used to be one in vista... which used to output hdmi audio
is anyone else having this problem? (yoshifizzle, are you and i having different problems? where do you see your device... mine does appear in the device manager, and is listed as working correctly... however as stated above gthe device does not appear when right clicking the icon in the taskbar) - Drivers can be tricky sometimes, try this go to device manager and uninstall the driver then using the drivers that you downloaded from intel install them and check the results.
Let me know if this helps. - This is not a problem with your system or drivers guys. Its a flaw with Windows 7. I was running Vista with my laptop outputting Video / Audio to my TV and it worked great. I upgraded to Windows 7 RC1 and the sound doesnt work (video is fine). Looks like we are all stuck with PC speakers or headphones until they put the real version of Windows 7 out. When I select the HDMI audio output, things like Windows media player / itunes wont even play tracks. The second I hit speakers / headphones, both programs fire up and play.
I have a homemade PC with onboard Sigmatel audio and an nVidia GTX260 graphics card... I'm using a S/PDIF passthrough from the motherboard to the graphics card, and audio is passed to the TV.
I did have one problem... When I upgraded the video card driver, I was not prompted for a reboot; however, my system required a reboot before the audio started working again.
I can play tracks from Zune, and system sounds also come through. I also have a Dell XPS1530, and Samsung LCD. With Win7 Beta, it worked. I haven't yet tried with Win7 RC.
I didn't really have to configure anything to get it to work... It just did. Guess I was lucky, but this is not necessarily an inherent flaw with the Win7 RC.- this seems pretty common with dell xps 1530 - my sound worked fine with the beta(s) and doesn't output at all via hdmi. normal sound works fine.
I have tried multiple drivers no luck just yet - any one got any ideas, versions that do work for this machine? - I have the same issue with a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ440e(nvidia geforce 8400gt video card). The video works fine trough HDMI but no audio.
- I have the same problem with an Inspiron. It worked fine under vista, and worked fine under win7 after the install, but suddenly stopped working yesterday.
I tried removing the drivers and manually installing the Dell Vista drivers but it did not work. - Same problem with Sony Vaio Z27GN. Windows 7 RTM.
- Same problem with home built system - HDMI video works fine but no audio, everything worked under Vista. Oh and by the way its not a driver problem. From this list anyone can see that its right across the board with differernt motherboards and different graphics card.
Please MS take this seriously!! and don't just dismiss us with dumb platitudes blaming hardware manufacturers - this is exactly what we're supposed to be doing. - I have the exact same problem and this is RTM now, so they did not fix it from RC! I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW370J running Windows7 x64 Ultimate RTM from Technet. In Vista x64, I had the HDMI audio as a 2nd playback device to choose from in Audio properties but now all I have is the Realtek notebook speaker card listed. Under device manager, I do see Intel(r) High Definition Audio HDMI and it says its working properly but I can't access it no matter what even when HDMI is hooked up. I know this worked fine before Win7 so this is NOT a driver issue. From all the posts I'm seeing above, this is a Windows 7 issue and Microsoft better address this, as this is no small matter! I will not settle for my audio playing through the laptop speakers while watching a blu-ray on a Samsung HDTV external display! If anyone finds any workarounds for this problem, PLEASE post here!
Thanks! Volcom, relax before you hurt yourself. :)
I have a home built PC, ASUS mainboard, Intel Core i7 proc, nVidia GTX260, some onboard audio chip or other with S/PDIF passthru to the video card. Hooked up to HDTV via HDMI. Audio works fine. If the issue were with Windows 7, my HDMI audio wouldn't work, either. (I'm running RC, x64.)
I've also got a Dell XPS 1530 w/ 8400GS and whatever audio chip they use. HDMI video and audio both work fine. (RC, x32)
I do believe it is a driver problem... Vista drivers FOR THE MOST PART work with Windows 7. That doesn't mean they all work perfectly. The same debacle plagued Vista... New/tweaks to the driver model, HW manufacturers weren't ready, so peripherals didn't work. Since that all changed with Vista, it got the blame. Reading the above posts, the one common element is that everyone having seems to be using Intel parts for audio or video... Maybe Intel drivers are the weak link?
Your Samsung TV, on HDMI2, has a separate analog input that you can use to pass audio from the laptop's headphone jack as a temporary workaround until this is solved.
As for getting digital audio output working via HDMI when watching Blu-Rays, that's something I set up in Cyberlink PowerDVD (what I use; not sure what you use)... And the HDMI option wasn't there until I started playing a disc. There was no sound, I stopped playback, went back to sound options, and there it was. Not sure why, probably funkiness with the driver. I don't know if you tried this, since your post didn't have much detail... Go to Control Panel, then Sound. In the case of my homebuilt machine, I have the following devices:
Speakers / High Definition Audio Device / Not plugged in
Headphones / High Definition Audio Device / Not plugged in
Digital Audio (S/PDIF) / High Definition Audio Device / Not plugged in
Digital Audio (HDMI) / High Definition Audio Device / Default Device
Look in your Sound control panel... Do you have an HDMI device there? If so, make it the default device, and then try your audio playback. If it doesn't work, make sure you have the latest drivers for your audio chip AND your video card.
If the HDMI device isn't there... I dunno, try reinstalling the audio chip and graphics card drivers.I for 1 use Razor HDMI headphones and the sounds come up fine for me. i also have the onboard audio ports hooked up to my surround sound system and i can swap sounds back and forth without problems and even run both at the same time (music on speakers games on headphones) all devices come up fine for me in the playback menu. Have you tried the showing disconnected devices?
RCx64- Good news! I talked to a friend that worked in the Windows 7 development at Microsoft and he had the same prob with 2 of his computers and figured out the solution. While it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, the HDMI Audio comes from the video card drivers. I went to Intel's website and chose my video card, and they had Windows 7 RC drivers up, I downloaded those and installed, rebooted and my HDMI audio is now back in the soundcard list and I tested it, worked great! So to all of you above, go get the latest video card drivers and try again. Worked for me!
Yes, video card drivers are important (as I stated above). Your video adapter is what outputs the HDMI signal... After all, it's producing the video. The audio gets to it from your sound card hooked up via a S/PDIF digital connection. This digital data is injected, by the video card, into the HDMI datastream. Therefore you need both your audio drivers (the sound card/chip is still required as the audio device), and the video drivers. HDMI as an audio device is actually courtesy of your video card due to the reason above.
Im using a spdif cable aswell hooked up to my nvidia 9500GT with HDMI running to the tv. I´m using vista but i don´t get the HDMI option displayed in the audio output deivce list. anyone?I have a homemade PC with onboard Sigmatel audio and an nVidia GTX260 graphics card... I updated the Sigmatel/SoundMAX audio drivers to beyond the generic drivers included with 7, and then found that HDMI disappeared from my audio devices list. The internal S/PDIF output on the motherboard/Sigmatel device is the "Digital Output". In the SoundMAX control panel program, you have three output devices to choose from: Speakers, Digital Output, and S/PDIF. "Digital Output" passed audio through to the HDMI port, and consequently, to the TV. I updated my nVidia card drivers to see if it'd put the HDMI device back (for the sake of labeling), but it didn't.

I didn't really have to configure anything to get it to work... It just did. Guess I was lucky, but this is not necessarily an inherent flaw with the Win7 RC.- The problem many of you are having is most likely due to the fact that Windows 7 doesn't support multiple outputs simultaneously (apparently Vista is the same way). You have to choose one output: hdmi, analog or spdif and that is all that will output. You can't run spdif to your receiver or tv and use headphones to listen to analog at the same time. I installed the latest Realtek drivers for 7 and it doesn't help. The problem is inherent in 7 which is a complete deal breaker for me. I'll stick to XP which does all I need it to and lets me configure the sound output to my needs without having to wade through menus and WMC setup to make a change every time I use a different device.

This sounds to me more like a limitation of your device/drivers, rather than Windows. Windows 7, as far as I can tell, works in a similar way to Windows XP: You pick a default device, and by default, all sounds get routed through it. If you have a program that can address a specific device (such as Winamp, when using DirectSound output), you can output to any device you want without changing the default. In fact, I have done this on my Windows 7 laptop... I connected an outboard audio adapter (Presonus Firebox), which has three stereo outputs; I set one to be the default, and set Winamp to use another. I was able to output sound from both, simultaneously.
As for whether your audio device will output sound from both analog out and S/PDIF, it sounds like that's a limitation of your device or your device driver, and not so much Windows 7. Try a Sound Blaster, or a studio-grade product such as M-Audio Audiophile, Presonus Firebox, Lynx, etc.
Hope this helps!
No it's not my devices. I have the same equipment I had with XP. It is the way 7 is designed (and from what I have heard, Vista also). Not familiar with your setup, but Winamp is not a device, it's software. I doubt your laptop has spdif out. If so, try running that and analog to another actual device and see for yourself.

By the way, there are threads about this on other forums. It's not conjecture, but fact.
- Hey all as the original poster of this topic i am still plagued by this problem...
I haven't had time to read all of these posts, but basically this seems to be a problem with the intel driver.
I have reinstalled the vista drivers, and they provide audio but are fairly buggy. The newest windows 7 on intel's website do not provide audio for me.
Have yet to root out the problem, and frankly the web has proved fruitless and frustrating.
If you are having the problem I described just install the vista drivers.
To clear something up i read about single channels (or something to that extent i read above) that is not a problem for me i can play audio over my speakers or headphones... there is no problem with the audio drivers... this is an HDMI issue. I had the same problem!!! The HDMI works well in xp but couldn't find the hdmi audio in Windows 7!!
It seems your video card is intel's card and you can find the updated driver, but my video card is nvidia 8600mgs, i downloaded several driver versions from nvidia but still cannot fix the problem!! I'm going to give up and roll back my laptop to xp or vista. Windows 7 disappointed me!!Update your laptop's audio driver to the latest Vista/7 driver. Most of them come with some sort of control program/mixer where you can choose which output device you want to use. The internal S/PDIF connection between the audio and video devices probably is one of the options on that list, even if "HDMI" doesn't show up.
- What's the point of this Microsoft??? No one has replied to our repeated postings only to whine that it's someone else's fault again. Its NOT the hardware - repeatedly people have told you that their hardware worked with XP and Vista, as did mine, then bang! Win7 kicks out the audio but leaves the video on HDMI. I have tried everything on my machine and recently did a brand new build using the the rtmf Win 7 Professional download - SAME PROBLEM - downloaded the latest nvidia drivers, no change.
You think I'm going to buy a copy of Win7? not likely. Why don't you investigate properly your customer complaints instead of passing it back to us or the hardware vendors?
When will you change into a customer oriented company - when ____ freezes over I guess.

Robin, to whom are your histrionics directed? I have no association with Microsoft, but I'll answer your question with a question. My laptop (Dell w/ nVidia 8400GS) and my desktop (homebuild w/ nVidia GTX260) both work just fine with HDMI audio. If the problem is with Windows 7, and not your hardware, then why does HDMI audio work flawlessly with my computers?
It's easy for one to assume that, since they updated from a previous version of the OS to the new version, and things stopped working, that it's Microsoft's fault. Well... It partly is. Windows XP, Vista, and 7, all use slightly different driver models. When the way the OS interacts with hardware drivers changes, this can make the drivers not work properly. Therefore, it is on the hardware manufacturers to update their drivers to work properly with the new OS. It'd be great if the grand vision for the original WDM were to hold true: "This is our driver model, and it won't change."
But it doesn't. The driver model gets updated, and now drivers are broken. Some manufacturers are better about updating their drivers than others. Since Win7 isn't even officially out yet, HW manufacturers are not really on the hook yet to have their drivers working flawlessly.
I'm not saying that my posts are the pinnacle of edification, but if you read over them, I've repeated ad nauseum the different ways I've gotten things to work with my systems.
If you can post some details about your system (notably the mobo model, video card model, etc.), and steps you've taken to get it going, maybe I can help guide you. What's the point of this Microsoft??? Adam, which version you're using for your laptop (Dell w/ nVidia 8400GS) ? I guess my 8600gs should be similar to yours. How many sound devices in the device manager?- Actually I've been to the nvidia forum, some guys said the 182.xx driver can fix the problem, some guys said the beta 190.xx can fix the problem, I tried, but no luck. So tired about this stupid problem!

I'm using Windows 7 RC x32 on my laptop; nVidia driver version is 186.03. In the Sound control panel I have the following devices:
Speakers; Speakers; Digital Audio (HDMI). Under Device Manager, I have "High Definition Audio Device" under Sound, and "NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS" under Display Adapters.
This has always worked on the laptop, so I haven't been down the road of troubleshooting it. The desktop PC was a little trickier.- welll, guys its done.. i got it worked after frustrating spending couple of hrs to figure wht was wrng. though pure try and error method.
well,
in empty space of playback devices right click and use the option to show all disabled devices, it popped up with digital output HDMI.
now in the properties of this driver i saw the driver which did stated tht it works fine but then i saw the name of sound driver company.
in my case the sound card was of sigmatel but the company named is IDT.
went to IDT website and there i downloaded the high definition audio driver from there.
after that i again saw the playback devices and there voila !!! the digital HDMI output option was there > again right click and set as default communication device
now it works jst awesome and as stated somewhere that u need revert back to original settings and all , u dnt need to do tht, this takes as 2 different output options so no conflicting outputs or so.
now i can say windows 7 rocks..!!
thnx all. - welll, guys its done.. i got it worked after frustrating spending couple of hrs to figure wht was wrng. though pure try and error method.

thnx all. - Thanks abhishekm30 . I had the same problem (HDMI audio not plugged in) on a sony vaio vgn-fw398y with a readon hd 3650. I updated the Realtek driver.

Matias Rodriguez - This is not a Windows 7 Problem, I had this problem when I upgraded my laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 from Windows Vista to Windows 7.. After the upgrade I was able to view the picture on my samsung LCD but there was no sound
I had sigmatel Audio in my notebook
i found the driver from Intel Web site for Intel 965 Chipset
you can download it from there web site and it works
It will take time for vendors to catch up!! - Had the same problem on an HP HDX16 laptop, no sound over HDMI under Windows 7 (although it worked fine under the factory-installed Vista). A quick visit to NVIDIA's website and a download of the latest version of their driver software for the video card installed the necessary HD audio drivers too, and the Sound tabs now include HDMI audio and it is working fine. (Still gotta work out how to get AC3 and DTS passthrough working, but one step at a time eh?)
Andre Thanks abhishekm30 . I had the same problem (HDMI audio not plugged in) on a sony vaio vgn-fw398y with a readon hd 3650. I updated the Realtek driver.
Yep, this did the trick for me. I have a system built on a Gigabyte board with the ATI HD 3200 integrated graphics chip. It worked great with Vista, but as soon as I upgraded to 7, no HDMI audio when watching HD tv. The audio worked with SD, but not HD. Upgrading the HDMI audio device did the trick. I also upgraded the graphics driver, Realtek audio drivers, and the driver for my Hauppage tuner card as well.

The solution was "un-update" the newest driver from Nvidia, install again the version that came with the pc (http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/R200184.EXE ).
it works for me.
(sorry for my english) - For those with Nvidia.... This may sound super simple but what fixed the issues for me was moving the cable to the other connection. For what ever reason the newer drivers dont recognize the output I had used for years.
- Having the same issue as everyone one else where no audio is coming through the hdmi connection but here is the odd thing. Earlier in the year when the beta for 7 came out, no issues with the audio through hdmi. Since then, I have done a factory restore on my Sony vgn-fz260e but nothing else with drivers. Now that the retail version of 7 is out, i'm running into this issue. Updated all the video and sound drivers off of Sony's site (cause the drivers from Nvidia for my geforce 8400m gt says that they are already updated) didn't help. I'm noticing that a lot of people ran into this with RC but not much now that the retail version is out. Just checking if anyone has some more ideas.
- Your advise is useless, I hope your not getting paid for this. Who is your supervisor, or do you have to push me enough to get together a paper trail big enough to get you replaced. I would suggest you do your job and assist these people in getting the answers they are seeking. This isn't a specific driver issue. You should escalate this to someone who earns their paycheck.
I agree thinkingbiggar. I was accused of having a hissy fit when I complained but I thought like you that this was a feedback board to MS developers - but its just a place to capture problems and keep them quiet.
The reality is that this problem has dogged beta and final versions of 7 - is not restricted to one manufacturer or graphics engine and all we get is ""its a driver issue". Well who is investigating the issue ? what further investigation has been done with anyone on this board who has reported a problem? I for one will no longer champion MS - they sell u stuff then leave you to hang. Just look at the number of postings and we are just the tip of the iceberg because we have enough nounce to try and troubleshoot - the average joe doesn't know that this board exists!- +1. I have the same problem with Windows 7.0. It worked before on Vista without any problem but it does not work now. I have Dell 1530 + Samsung TV. When I read these posts I understood that it is only wasting my time to find this answer as this is not driver or hardware problem but really Windows 7.0 problem as I tried everything. So, the result is the same - video works fine but audio does not. :(

This is really problem of Windows Media Player. I've solved the problem in the following way. Whatever you select as defualt communication device on the sound icon in the right bottom corner it does not help. Here are steps that helped me:
1) Start Windows Media Player on any video file
2) Make sure that you can see the video and sound on the laptop.
3) Right mouse click on Windows Media Player area (on video)
More options->Devices tab -> Select Speakers in the list of Devices -> click the properties button
4) In the pop-uo modal window "Speaker Properties" -> Select the audio device: => Select "Digital Audio (HDMI) (2-High Definition Audio Device)" ( on my laptop )
5) Save all window
6) Close and restart Windows Media Player
7) Connect HDMI cable and swith on TV to get video from HDMI
The sound + video works fine on my TV.
If you want to get back audio on your laptop you should do back process and select "Speakers / Headphones ..." in Windows Media Player :)
By using this not very conveniant way I can switch audit to HDMI... It looks like problem with Windows Media Player + Windows 7.0, hope Microsoft will fix it in the RCxxx.- Proposed As Answer byEfraín Morales Monday, November 02, 2009 5:48 AM
- @robin, cver, and thinkingbiggar,
Please, just answer for yourself this one question: If the problem is Windows 7, then why do I have HDMI audio working flawlessly on two different computers, both running 7 RC?
Hint: I don't work at Microsoft, and I have no affiliation with the company. I've received no technical support from anyone on the inside.
In any case, this thread has devolved to a bunch of feel-bad slamming, so I will no longer be monitoring it. (Don't bother replying to this message, because I won't see it.) - Hi Cver1968:
I also have a Dell XPS M1530 and had the same problem making a Custom install from Vista Ultimate 32 to Windows 7 Pro 32. I uninstalled the generic driver installed by W7 and from Dell, downloaded and installed driver R190517 version 6.10.0.5866. That is the Sigmatel HD Audio CODEC for the integrated Sound Blaster Audigy card on the M1530. Thisl sets everything prior to W7. Please try it, for it will work.
Efrain Morales - Hi,
I'm having the same problem, and have been on the phone with both Microsoft and Hp all day trying to solve it. I have an HP Pavilion dv4-1125nr laptop and am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I use to be able to get video and audio while running Vista, but I'am only able to receive video now when I plug my laptop in to my Panasonic tv through the HDMI cord with Windows 7. I have used all the suggestions in this thread: updating the audio drivers, updating the video drivers and nothing seems to work. I am still not able to see the HDMI out option on the Playback device option after right clicking on Sound. I have looked up in device manager which Audio drivers I am currently using and it is IDT Audio driver and a Intel High Definition (HDMI) driver. On Hp.com under the support and drivers for my laptop they only have the IDT drivers which I have installed, and on Intel they do not have an update for their driver. I have also updated my video driver which is also Intel, nothing seems to work, even though your previous suggestions seemed to have worked for others, they haven't for me. After nine hours on the phone, being transfered between HP and Microsoft I am losing hope, PLEASE HELP. Thank you before hand for any suggestions. - Hello windows 7 team:
This is my first Post here , and i'm confident this may be the fix for you. vaio vgnfw370j with vista x64 my hdmi audio out never gave me problems, but after upgrading to win7ultimate i lost that functionality. my intel driver was from 2008, no update available... finally after a reinstall of driver with no results i said screw this...
1) back up your current driver if you're scared
2) uninstall driver and select remove driver files
3) scan for hardware changes, win7 will install a generic hdmi audio driver, (dated 2009)
my hdmi audio instantly worked
good luck
update
after reading some threads up above, i want to recommend that you do a manufacturer search for updated drivers before using my method. in my case, with intel/hdmi built in to motherboard, no updated driver was available. i wouldnt be surprised if it also worked on other devices that weren't functioning properly. - Thanks AJbx, that worked perfectly. Great suggestion.
Thanks again. - Thanks for that, worked for me too, its the only thing that has worked so far.
- After about the 7th time trying this, my computer finally got the hint and uninstalled the SigmaTel driver and installed the general Microsoft one dated 7/13/2009. All my devices appear again under the Playback Devices. The other driver was dated 2/19/2008 and produced by IDT. I'm no Microsoft proponent myself, but after almost giving up, I'm gonna say it's a driver problem on the audio manufacturer's side. IDT just points their finger to your OEM but it doesn't help if it the same version or a year and a half old.

I had the same problem with my HD TV after upgrading to Windows 7. What I did was updated the drives to my chipset. I learned on here that with HMDI you need to have your Video card updated and not by microsoft. You need to go to the manufacturer web site and download it directly from there. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with an Intel 965 chipset and once I updated to the windows 7 driver from intel, everything started to work. I did this on 11/20/09 and as soon as I hooked back up to my HD TV in the sound box it also showed the HDMI TV connection. Then I made it my default sound choice and low and behold I was so happy to have sound. Worked on this for two nights and it still amazes me that microsoft updates would not catch this. Thats the problem with being a pioneer in electronics. We get to solve their issues.
Hi everyone HDMI Sound Problem Solved,
After installing the new windows 7, the hdmi icon on the playback devices menu disappeared.
Here is what i did and got the icon back and make the hdmi sound work again.
The intel graphic cards needs to be updated. The link below will take you to intel site and it will detect the required updates for your system.
http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm
Run the program and install the required updates and restart windows. HDMI icon will be back and the sound will work normal like it used to.
I hope this will solve everyone’s problem with the hdmi sound issue. I have hp Pavilion dv6, i m happy to hear the crisp clear sound again from my Philips HTS-8100 sound bar.

dinpratap - Fixed for those of you who have the unfortunate pleasure of purchasing a Dell M1530 XPS laptop....I had the same situation as reported above using a Samsung A550 television and Nvidia 8400gs..Running Windows Vista everything worked fine (x86)...Did a clean restore to Windows 7 Ultimate (still x86) and had video and audio working for a few weeks until out of nowhere the lack of an audio signal......Spent a few hours rolling drivers back and (up) for both the sigmatel audio interface and nvidia card until I finally uninstalled the latest NVIDIA driver and installed the driver for Vista from the Dell website; R200183. Now audio and video work...The only issue with this driver version is that my display is not consistenly recognized and I sometimes have to plug and unplug the HDMI cable from my laptop but I prefer this than no audio support at all....
Hope this helps. - Had the same problem. I have a sony vaio VGN laptop. Just a week ago they released an updated driver to the video card that fix the no sound out put through the hdmi.

I have the same issue, but was able to get my sound to work. Vista combined audio and video control together automatically. Whet I found is that I had to plug my laptop in and go to sound settings and set my output to my Samsung HDTV. Until the problem is resolved to work like vista, you have to change the setting manually between your pc speakers and your tv.
I noticed that if you use windows media player you can choose your audio output for that player, by going to tools, options, devices, doublle click audio output select you tv in the drop down.
Hope this helps. Thanks abhishekm30 . I had the same problem (HDMI audio not plugged in) on a sony vaio vgn-fw398y with a readon hd 3650. I updated the Realtek driver.

For all of you out there having issues with an ATI card and this problem, this worked for me. After hours of scouring the internet looking for a solution I'm glad I stumbled upon this. (Sony Vaio VGN-FW390 with an ATI Radeon 3650)On another note - While this is consistently a "driver issue," I don't think Windows 7 is completely free of blame. My HDMI Audio worked fine before I upgraded from Vista, and the problem arose immediately after I tried to hook my laptop back up to my TV. I rolled back drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled, tried a million different methods of updates and this is the only one that worked. The problem is widespread across ATI, Nvidia and Intel chipsets. And I'm pretty sure people with every chipset reported it working before upgrading to Windows 7. So it's probable the cause was with Windows, not the drivers. I'm just thankful that the card manufacturers were quick to fix the problem. Were you ever able to resolve this? I have been trying to get it fixed for months now and MS support only says to download more drivers. I have downloaded and reinstalled drivers over and over, reinstalled windows, gone into the bios and still 'no audio device drivers'. I'm about ready to give up.
did you ever resolve this? I'm having the same problem and cannot find a solution.
- I also have the xps m1530 and recently did a clean install of Win 7. I have an HDMI connection between my laptop and AV Receiver. The only audio I get is 2 channel Prologic. I'd like to get 5.1 DD and be able to play WMV HD files. Is there a way to get this? When I had Vista running I also had Cyberlink's PowerDVD which allowed me to pass through the DD 5.1 sound. I haven't installed PowerDVD yet; but, I think that only works with DVD's and Blurays and not other files (AC3, WMV HD).
- I have a xps m1530 and solve the problem by installing the driver for the Nvidia 8600 that came out on December 4 (195.62 WHQL - http://la.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_x64_195.62_whql_la.html)
- I struggled with getting both audio and video through HDMI as well. I have a Sony VAIO VGN series connected to a brand new Sony 52" Z-series LCD and all I could get was video (looked great too!). I took the laptop upstairs and connected with a different HDMI cable to 32" Panasonic LCD...same issue....great video but not audio.
I checked every W7 setting I knew and no luck. Got sound out of VGA + headphone ->audio jack but not via HDMI.
I searched the Internet for answers - nothing concrete.
Went to Intel to download driver update tool and it came back unsupported.
Called Sony and went through ____ with tech support. Finally was IM'ing with a Sony service agent who revealed that the HDMI audio drivers are included with the HDMI video drivers. I went to Sony's support site, entered my laptop in, searched on latest video drivers and downloaded the newest drivers and VOILA! Worked awesome.
The misconception is that this is an audio driver vs. video. Hope this helps and feel free to contact me at Email removed for privacy for questions. I got pissed off for weeks about this problem so I'm happy to help.
Frankly I never suspected it could be a Windows issue or even the video player. I suspected it was something to do with the physical HDMI port and was told from one Sony agent that *some* laptops only support video from their HDMI ports. Never believed it.
Good luck all.
Lee - for anyone stumbling across this problem make sure your drivers up-to-date. once this is this is set, go to "sound" from the control panel. when the screen opens up, you should see a list of a few devices, make sure the component that you hooked your hdmi (such as a tv or monitor) is correctly installed. to do this, right click the device and click "set as default" when you do this then go into the next tab in sound to text. if you hear it from the monitor it is good. but in order for it to work you must disable the speakers from your computer by left clicking on the first tab in "sound". once disabled it should be ready to go, it worked for me.
- My $1000 Samsung is going back to Fry's this weekend. I'm sick of jacking around with this ____.
Oh, one more comment. I'm able to get sound to work if I use the component port 2. However, having spent $100 on an HDMI cable, an adaptor, and audio cables, I'm in no mood to mess with this piece of junk any longer.
The HDMI/DVI port + the audio ports should be a straight forward exercise. Building my own PC was easier than getting sound out of this TV. I even got a 720c Deskjet to work with 64-bit W7 in less time.

It is slightly condescending to get your "I don't care - stock form response" to every inquiry. We all can make a auto-response that does not address much.
- Can you paste a link here for those with the same model/s? IDT claims not to have any drivers on their site. I can not find any drivers for IDT HD audio products on their site.
Thanks... - I am having the same problem as everyone else. I have an XPS M1330 I have tried most of the suggestions on this forum with no luck. I tried uninstalling the audio drivers and then reinstalling them. I went and checked in sounds before I rebooted and 2 more devices showed up but after I rebooted they disappeared.
I went to the intel website but wasn't sure what to download.
Has anyone else solved this problem on an xps m1330. I upgraded from Vista only a couple of weeks ago, it worked fine for me on Vista. I don't want to have to reinstall Vista.
I am now about ready to throw my laptop out the window! Here’s what worked for me. I owe a lot of it to pwjamro’s recommendations.
1. Enable Digital Audio (S/PDIF) in your volume control options.
2. Connect your HDMI from your computer to your TV’s HDMI/DVI input port.
3. Set your TV input to HDMI/DVI input. You won’t have sound yet.
4. Turn off your TV, and turn off your computer.
5. Turn on your computer first and your TV second. Wait for your computer to boot before turning on your TV. If you get sound out of your computer when it boots, something is still not right. If you got it working, your computer sound should be dead audiowise. Even your headphones shouldn’t be working. All audio should be going to the HDMI port. If it’s not working yet, try setting Digital Audio as your default, although this shouldn’t be necessary. Unplug headphones and all other non-HDMI output from your computer. Reboot your computer. If sound comes out of your computer on reboot, it’s still not working. Keep playing around with sound options.
6. Boot sequence is critical. Computer first. TV second.
7. When you get to the point where computer sound is disabled. Turn on your TV. It will be working.
I just kept playing around with my computer sound options. The all of a sudden, presto! It was working. I was ready to throw the TV and the computer out of the window.Once you get the TV sound working, you can use the TV audio output and connect it to your PC gaming speakers for awesome sound.
- I do not have Digital Audio (S/PDIF) listed in my volume control options. I only have SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.
Jake,
Are you running W7? I’m running 64-bit W7. I can’t get Sigma Tel to install, which is a much better codec.
In any case, disable the speakers and enable the high definition audio device under "volume control options" > "playback devices."
camel
- I have windows 7 32-bit. After disabling the speakers I have nothing else to enable. the high definition audio device (Laptop skeakers) is already enabled.
Jake,
Have you followed the correct boot sequence described above?
- Yes I followed the boot sequence you posted with no luck.
You set the TV to HDMI/DVI and then turned it off? Then did the boot sequence?
Try it again just for the heck of it.
I was just playing around and all of a sudden it started working. Other people reported this phenomenon was well. Who knows what’s going on.
- I have done all of the boot sequence several times with no luck . Maybe something happened when I upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista, it worked fine before.
- I had the same issue with my Intel G45 chipset on a Dell Studio 540. It was working fine, then the next time I turned the system on, no HDMI sound on Window 7 Ultimate. After a lot of digging, I noticed the display driver (not audio) was dated from August 2009. I went to Intel's website, got the latest G45 graphics driver, installed it, and voila SOUND!
So what happened? Windows update had automatically installed an old driver. Moral of the story is to turn off automatic updates and tell Windows to notify, but not install updates until you approve them. Then scrupulously review all updates. I had turned off automatic updates as well. It was installing a bad printer driver over one that was working just fine.
- I have finally solved the problem, I'm so Happy! I was searching the internet for updates for my drivers and I came across something called DriverMax. It's a programme that searches your computer for the latest drivers. so I thought I'd give it a go and see wat it finds.
It said that loads of my drivers where out of date including my audio and HDMI drivers, so I downloaded them and restarted the computer and hey presto I now Have HDMI device listed in my sound options. - Hi, i can't find video driver (for windows 7). I've same model. can you send me link to download? tnx

Hi, i can't find video driver (for windows 7). I've same model. can you send me link to download? tnx
If this is for the Intel Driver, go to their downloads section, then select Product=Graphics, Product Line=Desktop Graphics Controllers, Product Name= G45 Express Chipset. On the following screen, select your version of Windows 7 and click ok to the legaleze to download the newest driver.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx- It_must_be_a_camel, model is Sony vaio VGN-FZ440e. OS: Windows 7 64x. video c.: nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT. I found driver for Vista 64x, but can't find for win 7 64x. please help me. thanks.
- begreen9, very much thanks, i will try it
Before you go installing Intel graphics drivers, remember that you are using nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT for your graphics. Intel graphics drivers are generally for boards like the 35DP35 that have on-board graphics. Even if your setup has on-board graphics, it is most certainly disabled in you BIOS or else it would conflict with your 8400M GT card. Therefore, you have no need for an intel graphics driver.
Of course, you should update your chipset drivers for W7.Are you saying that you can’t find a driver for your graphics card? I just did a quick Google search and found this 64-bit W7 driver:

Roncy, I don’t know to whom you addressed your comment; however, my best answer was posted here Friday, January 08, 2010 7:42 AM. If it still doesn’t work, just keep playing with it.
Plugging an HDMI cable into your computer should have the same effect as plugging in headphones---the sound from your computer speakers should be disabled. If you are getting computer sounds, don’t bother turning on your TV, its audio will not be working.
To all you folks having problems with this, it’s my belief that you have a driver conflict or a device setting conflict (more likely). Turn W7 automatic driver updates off. Update all motherboard, chipset, video, and audio drivers directly from the manufacturer. This eliminates the driver variable. Next, just put down the energy drink, coffee, etc., and keep playing with playback settings.

Anyway found the best way to get sound with HDMI without uninstalling anything or windows update or driver update or rebooting. Your system does not matter whether it is Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway etc… on any TV via HDMI.
Compared to Vista, I guess Windows 7 sometimes fails to determine the current audio where the video is being played. My example would be the problems when downloading at first the Windows 7 OS, when I downloaded it and installed it did not work but when redownloaded Windows 7 and installed it again, then Windows 7 worked. Others only did once other did twice or more, mine several. Anyway this is not a conflict or hardware problem but maybe safe to say a Windows 7 pnp glitch because it works fine after you do below steps. Between Dell, HP and Sony test, Dell did not show my TV (HDMI Output) as one of the sound options until I switched to projector only.
1. Make sure you are connected to the TV via HDMI.
2. Switch to projector only.
3. Open sound control panel.
4. Right click on your digital TV make as default playback device.
The next time you try to play anything with your HDMI cable the video and audio will work without setting anything.

"hdmi win 7 no sound" show 704.000 hits on Google. Thats a lot of people having driver or settings conflicts with recent release of Windows. I have tried everything. Cannot see any coflicts in Device manager. The video is perfect but the audio does not sound at all. Both worked well with Vista. I can "see" the green blinking bar on the volume control but I cannot hear it. The HDMI alternative does not at all appear on the sound menu, only Line and Spdif or when i use the Realteks latest driver, Speakers and Digital output. The headphones show up as expected when I connect. But not the HDMI.
Best regards
RalphAfter one hour the query "hdmi win 7 no sound" has increased by 30.000 persons. Since Win 7 HDMI users are only a fraction of the total Win 7 users it is very evident that all HDMI users have problems. Microsoft has to handle this problem more serious!
/Ralph- Desperatly working on the HDMI problem I visited Realteks hompage and found that they have a new release of their drivers. Evidently they are aware of the problem since this is their third release within 4 or 5 weeks. Unfortunately the new driver did not solve the problem.
- @ Ralph
Do below steps...
1. Connect to your TV via HDMI
2. Switch to projector only (on keypad press Windows button + P)
3. Go to >Control Panel choose >Hardware & Sound then >Sound and >Playback tab
4. Click on digital TV and set as default
Test by youtube, you should have sound. Switch to Extend (Windows key + P)...
This should should work since i tested it to several different system, switching to Projector only is most important step aside from connecting your computer to the TV. Extending or duplicating your monitor will probably not show your digital TV on the playback sound so choose Projector only. After doing this steps Windows 7 should automatically play audio where video is being played.- Proposed As Answer byRoncy Nald Monday, January 25, 2010 7:30 AM

Thank you for your advise!
Unfortunately I have problems to connect to TV as projector.
If I start the system with both PC Monitor and TV HDMI connected the TV becomes the primary screen.
If I start the system and connect the TV after system has started the system cannot find a projector.

You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. You connect an audio device to an HDMI endpoint on this computer. At first, the audio device works correctly. However, after you restart the computer, you cannot hear any sound from the audio device. Additionally, in the Sound window, the status of the corresponding audio device is "Not plugged in."
This problem occurs occasionally. It is more likely to occur on certain hardware.
Just thought I would through this out there even though it doesn't seem to be the solution to my issue.- @ Ralf
YW, my tests were with 3 different Notebooks at my house and none with a PC. Hope i can help more, but my PC is old w/ no HDMI.
Regards - PROBLEM SOLVED! Cver 1968's solution solved my issue where HDMI was not transmitting audio to my HD tv. I have Vista on a Dell Laptop M1530, and by changing the settings in the Media Player, I was able to receive audio.
