Digital River has been making every effort to make it right for these customers. · It should be noted that that there are two types of operating system installations: an Upgrade Installation and a Custom or Clean Installation. An Upgrade Installation is a type of installation where the new operating system installs itself over your current operating system, keeping your existing files and programs intact. There are certain scenarios where an Upgrade Installation option is possible. For example:
Upgrading from Windows Vista 64 bit to Windows 7 64 Bit
Upgrading from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 32 Bit
However, if you want to move from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit, or if you are running Windows XP, you have to do a Custom or Clean Installation that must be started by booting off the Windows 7 64 bit DVD. This means that you wipe the current operating system completely from your system, and install the new operating system from scratch. To perform a Custom or Clean installation, please contact Digital River, unless you have already ordered a Backup DVD with your initial order.

This includes error messages reported during the download phase and during the unloading phase. The most common are:
1. Error “We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded.” This error occurs when you are in the unloading phase of the 64-bit Windows 7 download process and are running a 32-bit version of Windows such as Windows XP or Windows Vista 32-bit. This is by design as you cannot launch setup for the 64-bit version of Widows 7 while running a 32-bit operating system.
2. Error “This version of the file is not compatible with the version of Windows you’re running.” The cause for this error is the same as #1 above and occurs if you attempt to launch the Windows 7 setup program located in the unboxed folder “expandedSetup”.
3. The download appears to hang at some % and will not continue or resume. Digital River and Microsoft are investigating reports of this issue. This appears to be a series of isolated issues that are often related to the user’s internet provider or installed 3rd party software. If you continue to encounter this problem without resolution, please contact Digital River at the region appropriate following link.

4. Error “An error has occurred. Unspecified error.” Digital River and Microsoft are also investigating reports of this issue. While not wide spread, this issue appears to be caused when one of the downloaded files is incomplete or has become corrupted on the user’s computer. Users encountering this issue you should try and re-download the files by logging into your order from the region appropriate following link.

I downloaded the Student Promo from win741.com. I am running Windows 7 x86 RC and I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 RTM. I downloaded the files from Digital River, but they come as a .exe file and two .box files. The idea is to install from the .exe file, but when I let it run, it "Unloads" itself until near the very end and then produces the following error:
"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only."
Upon a Google search, it seems EVERYONE who is downloading from Digital River or the Microsoft Store is getting this error. According to mydigitallife.info, the setup2.box file is corrupt that Microsoft uploaded for everyone to download. Has anyone discovered any workarounds or does anyone know when Microsoft will upload the fixed files?
Also, why did MSFT not simply provide a .iso file for people to download? There are free .iso recorders all over the internet, and then it would allow everyone to boot from the disk? I am VERY disappointed in this experience, especially after such an excellent experience using the Windows 7 Beta and the RC as my primary operating system since they became available to the public.

Am I going to have to wait until the discs I ordered get here? Or will this be resolved?- You probably have a corrupt copy of the install media. Wait till later and try again. Much later.Rating posts helps other usersMark L. Ferguson MS-MVP
Has anyone spoke to a customer service rep?
I've had -zero- luck getting a hold of an actual person from Digital River OR Microsoft.
Has anyone got any sort of time frame??- The initial download has three files:
- setup1.box (~2.1Gb)
- setup2.box (~140Mb)
- Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x86.exe (~71Mb)
"An error was encountered
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"
I have re-downloaded the software and I am still receiving the same error.
Any advice? Is there a way to download a .iso image instead?
Any help or support would be appreciated.

Hi
Sorry, but it's not clear what is happening?
What OS is on the computer that you are trying to upgrade?
Are you selecting the Upgrade or Custom (Advanced) option when you start the installation?
Let us know.
Thank You for using Windows 7Ronnie Vernon MVP
- Is this the Digital River download version of Windows 7 that you have? If so, check here : http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7install/thread/aedb1245-f8f9-42ec-9a0c-1aa932363bbb
- I'm receiving the exact same message. I hope someone knows how to fix this.
- If you can order the backup DVD for $13, I would suggest you do so, there seems to be some issues at this time with the digital download.
Andre Da Costa http://adacosta.spaces.live.com http://www.activewin.com - Thanks. I orderd the DVD when I did the pre-order, I just hope it doesn't take the full 3-4 weeks to receive.
- sorry
I am in the process of installing windows 7. I got a message that said I wouldn't be able to save my files. I was wondering if there is a version that will allow me to save my files.
I have vista and loading windows 7 home premium. - I downloaded it from Microsoft.
If I chose the custom option - I cannot have my files saved? - I initially installed Windows-7/32 bit (which I downloaded from the Microsoft Online Store) by mistake instead of the 64 bit version, as I had been running Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Microsoft Store should make the selection between 32x & 64x more "idiot proof" since I evidently missed that step or entered the choice incorrectly. Anyways, I realized this mistake after getting an error message when trying to transfer my old files/settings from my external hard drive using Windows Easy Transfer. I checked My Computer/System to confirm the OS that was running and was aggravated to see "32 bit" not "64 bit"!. From that point I have tried downloading/installing Windows 7/64 bit but cannot get the installation to complete. I tried a second time after a restart but got the same error (dialog box) after the files are extracted: UNLOADING THE BOX "We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only". I tried changing the folder name; folder location; and the property setting of the folder so it is not read-only, but those steps have not worked. When I go back to check the folder property setting, it reverts to "read only". I see in the forum that other users are having this problem. I want the 64 bit version and will assume that once the install is finally complete (after this bug is fixed), I will be to transfer the old files/settings from my external hard drive. How can I get the install to complete?

- I use Vista Home Premium. I recently purchased Windows 7 Professional from a Microsoft online store. I followed the instructions to download the program which finished with an installation icon being placed on my desktop. The next step in the installation process is to double click on the installation icon to start the actual installation. When I did that I received the following error message:"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read only ". I am using my own laptop and have not not altered any of the folder settings.

I have twice downloaded Student version of Windows 7 64bit and the downloaded file is broken.
I am getting a “We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded” error.
I have not received a Serial Number for Win 7.A little Googling reveals this problem to be widespread with the 64bit Student download.
I have wasted most of a day attempting to resolve this issue; I was finally forced to buy a retail copy of Win 7 to complete my install in time for work this Monday a.m.
I am totally dissatisfied with the purchase, which was made in good faith in the expectation of a working download.
The goods supplied are obviously defective, not fit for purpose and not of merchantable quality. You have my money and I have nothing, nada, no Windows 7.
How do I go about getting my money refunded?
Digital River have not replied to any of my emails.
Supplied links for refunds in other posts do NOT work (they are for US site not UK).

I have saved the original download to the dsktop as requested and expanded the software also to the desktop as requested, but cannot go any further.
I currently have 49gig spare in this partition. Many thanks
