"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded"

- I am experiencing big problems trying to install Windows 7 onto my laptop. I will try and be as clear as possible in explaining.
My laptop is currently running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit. I have purchased the Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit Upgrade from the Microsoft Student Offer.
I was led to believe that upon downloading, I would get an .ISO file, which I would then burn to a DVD. Then I would boot from this DVD and do a clean/custom install.
This has not been possible. Upon downloading from the Microsoft Student Website, I get 3 files. These are:
Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
setup1.box
setup2.box
I double click on "Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe" and I get the message "Unloading the Box". Once the status bar reaches the end, I get the following error:
"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security
permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only".
I click on OK. Regardless of the fact that I received the above error message, I now have a new folder called "expandedSetup".
Within this folder are lots and lots of complicated looking files, stored within many other sub folders.
However, in the root of "expandedSetup" is a file called "setup.exe". I double click on this file, and I get the following error message:
"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check you computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit)
or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher".
This is as far as I have managed to get. I cannot find an .ISO file anywhere within the download, so I am unable to make a bootable DVD.
Please can anyone advise me on how to successfully install Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit onto my laptop using the download that I have purchsed.
Thank you very much in advance :)- Edited byMichael - Support EngineerMSFT, OwnerThursday, October 22, 2009 5:46 PMChanged title

There is a way to create an image file dispite recieving this error we seem to be all recieving.
1. You will need to use an additional Microsoft command-line tool, called Oscdimg.
Details here
Download here
Download the .zip file and extract it. Then cut and paste the Oscdimg.exe file into your C:\Windows\System32 directory
2. You now need to start up your command prompt, which can be done by Start->Run then enter 'cmd' into the prompt. (Run as administrator if in Vista!)
3. You should now have the command prompt open, now you need to use the Oscdimg tool to create the image, by entering the following:
Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\<YOUR DIR> \expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h C:\<YOUR DIR> \expandedSetup C:\<YOUR DIR> \Win7.iso
For example: Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\Users\James\Downloads\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h C:\ Users\James\Downloads \expandedSetup C:\ Users\James\Downloads \Win7.iso
It will now scan the source tree then begin creating the image. PLEASE note: you must replace '<YOUR DIR> ' appropriatly as to where you have downloaded the files.
4. You should now have an image file, called Win7.iso, in the same directory.
5. You can now burn this .iso file to a blank DVD using appropriate software. I personally use PowerISO (You dont need the paid version to burn the image)
6. Viola! You have your not so shiney Windows 7 disk. Restart your computer and install away!

- SUCCESS!
I managed to get it to unpack completely without any problems and as I downloaded this last night at 11pm (just finished the last 10% now) the following is what I did to get it to work-
Notes- This is on a 32 bit Vista Home Basic Laptop- I have turned off my anti-virus and my firewall before doing the following-
Pre Step- Create a folder in the following directory- C:\users\yourname - example for me is "C:\Users\Sir_Vikin\win 7"
now follow the rest-
STEP 1- Download the DLMWin7.exe application but do NOT run it yet.
Step 2- Right click the DLMWin7.exe - select Unblock
Step 3- Under the compatibility tab select the bottom box-"Run this program as an administrator" Click "Ok" to close
Step 4- Right click the DLMWin7.exe file and select run as administrator
Step 5 - Download the files to the folder you created example- "C:\Users\Sir_Vikin\win 7"
Step 6- Run it, it should unbox completely!
I am now installing it..- Proposed As Answer bySir_Vikin Friday, October 23, 2009 1:17 PM

· It should be noted that that there are two types of operating system installations: an Upgrade Installation and a Custom or Clean Installation. An Upgrade Installation is a type of installation where the new operating system installs itself over your current operating system, keeping your existing files and programs intact. There are certain scenarios where an Upgrade Installation option is possible. For example:
Upgrading from Windows Vista 64 bit to Windows 7 64 Bit
Upgrading from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 32 Bit
However, if you want to move from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit, or if you are running Windows XP, you have to do a Custom or Clean Installation that must be started by booting off the Windows 7 64 bit DVD. This means that you wipe the current operating system completely from your system, and install the new operating system from scratch. This includes error messages reported during the download phase and during the unloading phase. The most common are:
1. Error “We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded.” This error occurs when you are in the unloading phase of the 64-bit Windows 7 download process and are running a 32-bit version of Windows such as Windows XP or Windows Vista 32-bit. This is by design as you cannot launch setup for the 64-bit version of Widows 7 while running a 32-bit operating system.
2. Error “This version of the file is not compatible with the version of Windows you’re running.” The cause for this error is the same as #1 above and occurs if you attempt to launch the Windows 7 setup program located in the unboxed folder “expandedSetup”.
3. The download appears to hang at some % and will not continue or resume. Digital River and Microsoft are investigating reports of this issue. This appears to be a series of isolated issues that are often related to the user’s internet provider or installed 3rd party software. If you continue to encounter this problem without resolution, please contact Digital River at the region appropriate following link.

- I don't claim great expertise on this, but as I understand it, there are two problems with your upgrade path.
The first is that to "upgrade" to Win 7 professional requires you to have Vista Business installed (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579%28WS.10%29.aspx).
Secondly, it's not possible to upgrade from a 32 bit version to a 64 bit version (see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequently-asked-questions)
You may be able to do a clean install, though this is not clear to me - I am in the same position as the OP.The problem is not with the actual install process itself, for which I understand that as you suggest a clean install would be required. The problem is before the install is launched, as the error message is received when unpacking the downloaded file.
- i am having the same problem.....
- Same problem as the OP. Downloaded the files from Digital River, and have:
Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
setup1.box
setup2.box
I double click on "Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe" and I get the message "Unloading the Box". Once the status bar reaches the end, I get the following error:
"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security
permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only".
I can double-click on the setup.exe in the "expandedSetup" folder, but I get an error telling me that it is not a valid Win32 application. - So i downloaded win7 installation, wasn't an iso as i expected. Nonetheless, i tried to run the exe that was attached and at the very end of unpacking the 2 setup boxes, an error message pops up saying " We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only." Needless to say, im running as administrator, downloaded the files to my desktop, then to a new folder, i have every permission possible. I also tried to transfer it to another computer to see if it can unpack it but to no avail. Same problem there. Anyone have any suggestions. Im currently re downloading it as i type this. It probably wont help much so has anyone else run into this problem?

- I have the same problem. Maybe the Digital River files are corrupted?
- lets try to get as many common factors as possible to narrow down the souce of trouble.
Im running winxp 32 bit and downloaded the file from Digital River.
I also tried to unpack the files on my vista 32 bit..... same error.
So far it looks like its a 32 bit error thing, pretty sure. - Is there somewhere we can just download the DVD image and use the key in the e-mail to install?I'm running XP 32 bit professional and bought 7 64 bit professional.
- I'm running 32 bit vista home premium and attempting to upgrade to 64bit 7 professional, as i understand it this can be done with a custom installation. However i am getting the same error as the OP

- Oh well, at least i actually did order the backup media, its nice to have a backup option on hand, guess i have to wait a few days to try out 7
- It has nothing to do with the upgrade path. You can make the folder into a bootable iso.

Yes, I don't think it has anything to with that. The program to unpack the files works fine until the very end, I think the setup2.box file is corrupted.
See: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l-2.html- I'm getting the same thing. So I right clicked the folder it creates (expandedSetup) and unmarked the read only box. tried to install again, and same thing. Did the box again, then it started going through the files, so I'm trying to install again.
I was really hoping to just download an .iso, then burn to a DVD so I can set up W7 in boot camp. Anybody know if I will be able to do this? - I get this too. Running XP 32bit. All I want to do is burn it to a disk, then I'm gonna wipe out the XP partition in Boot Camp then install W7. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. seems too wide spread.

You'll be able to install in bootcamp...when this issue is sorted out. Like you, I can't seem to create any folders that aren't "read only," regardless of how many advanced "tricks" I've used (even after claiming ownership of the folder and assigning myself full rights to it, I still cannot get it to work). Very annoying and very disappointing.
I was really hoping to just download an .iso, then burn to a DVD so I can set up W7 in boot camp. Anybody know if I will be able to do this? The progress bar goes all the way to the end, but however, it displays a message saying somewhat "Unable to write new files to the designated folder". It was done on all three of my hard drives, desktop and C drive. I even tried it on Admin account, booting in safe mode. Same thing happened. I removed all hardwares except Keyboard, mouse and monitor.
I tried installing Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 64 bit on (Student offer 29.99) on Windows XP professional Volume Licence (Korean, 32bit).- Merged byJason H. - Support EngineerMSFT, ModeratorThursday, October 22, 2009 8:18 PMSame Issue
- I am in a very similar situation.
I am running Windows Vista™ Home Premium (SP2) - 32 bit on my PC. I purchased the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade - 64 bit , via the student offer, under the impression I was going to be able to download an image file with which I could burn my own disks for a fresh install.
I downloaded my installation files via the Digital River download client.
As above, during the installation I recieve the following error:
"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only. "
The installation process seems to have partially extracted itself creating the expandedSetup directory.
I think that this problem stems from the poorly constructed student offer web-page. I personally found it very tedious to select which product I actually wanted to order and found myself running in circles.- Edited byNixonInnes Thursday, October 22, 2009 7:57 AM
- I too believed I'd be downloading an image which I'd simply burn and install. What a pain in the butt this has been so far, and I hope this isn't an indication of things to come from windows 7.
- Same problem. Seems that whoever created this package doesn't understand that the upgrade is supposed to be for 32bit to 64bit and 64bit to 64bit so they created this setup that requires a 64bit OS to unpack. Technical support is telling people that they cannot use this install because they are not eligible for the upgrade if they do not have 64bit OS currently, which is not what microsoft has specified.
This is a case of (DigitalRiver?) screwing up their package and not giving us the actual product that they claimed through the links on their site would work for anyone using any version of XP or VISTA currently (since they link to microsoft's explanation on what qualifies for the upgrade).
I will not be buying the $13 media. I will be expecting the digital download upgrade from XP 32bit to windows 7 64bit that was advertised. I get this too. Running XP 32bit. All I want to do is burn it to a disk, then I'm gonna wipe out the XP partition in Boot Camp then install W7. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. seems too wide spread.
I've got a Mac too. I used Disk Utility to make an image of my XP partition, so I'm going to just try to burn a DVD from that folder despite the error message, maybe it means nothing. If it can boot, hopefully it will run a verification on the install DVD before installing or at least restoring from the disk image from the Mac side will work.- Yea, I'm looking on the other threads here too. What a freakin mess. I want to bypass the read only problem first before I move on to trying to make it an .iso.
- Same problems as everyone else, Win XP pro 32 to Win7 pro 64 bit
- I don't want to get anyone's hopes up just yet, but I've successfully made a bootable ISO from the folder that was expanded, despite the error. If it works, I'll post up the (simple) instructions.
- I preordered Windows 7 Pro 64-bit; am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. My computer is eligible for this upgrade, but I'm having a problem running the "Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe" file that I downloaded from Digital River. It attempts to extract files into a new folder, which I would then burn to a bootable disk for a custom install, but the extraction process errs. The error message says it can't creat new files in the folder and that I should check the folder options to make sure it's not write protected. I've heard that this is because I'm trying to extract 64-bit files in a 32-bit environment, but nowhere on any Microsoft website have I seen that as a potential problem...how do I get around this? Thanks!

- Yes I am having the exact same problem. My computer is running vista 32bit at the moment, it's a brand new 64bit enabled pc I got last week. But I wanted to use it before windows 7 came out. I downloaded the 64bit version from digital river, and when I attempt to load the file I am getting the exact same response. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's having this issue. I hope it can be resolved as soon as possible. How can I fix this issue?
- I am having the exact same problem. I also bought the student offer from Digital River, and it did state that it would be ok to go from vista premium 32bit, to Windows 7 64bit, as long as I do a fresh clean install, which I am prepared to do, as I've had this computer less than a week and hardly anything is on it. But I get the same problems that you guys are all getting with that error message at the end. And the message that says when I open the expanded setup, and click setup.exe. it tells me my os is incompatible with this software I'm trying to load.
This is all very annoying, you would think this would have been sorted before hand. I also bought a 32bit windows 7 version, for my laptop, which runs vista premium 32bit, I tried the install sequence on this, and everything worked perfect, the Windows 7 install screen came up fine.
Hope this gets resolved soon! - I've got the same exact problem! Windows xp media center edition 2005. I've tried a couple of things such as the attrib -r command that microsoft suggests for the problem but that didnt work. Very frustrating experience with windows 7 so far...beginning to regret things now.

I think Microsoft tries to make Windows as difficult as possible.- Same problem and same deal as everyone else. Went with the student deal through Digital River and am trying to upgrade from 32bit XP to 64bit Win7 Professional. Getting the same error.
I ordered my discs as well, but I was really just planning to use them as backup for just-in-case moments. Good thing I bought them after all. Not happy about having to wait on them to be shipped though. - * * SOLUTION * *
There is a way to create an image file dispite recieving this error we seem to be all recieving.
1. You will need to use an additional Microsoft command-line tool, called Oscdimg.

- download vlite its 100% easier... just create a boot image burn it, if u want to do a custom install tho just format and use ur windows 32 bit os installer to get just the drivers, then use ur new boot cd to install win7, its what i did and im using it now w00t... u can install 32 bit or 64 bit win7 this way, u just need the 32 bit drivers for digital river download. sorry im not one to make tutorials, im not very good.
- Attempted this. Successfully burnt iso. Attempted to install booting via CD/DVD drive. Hung up on initial splash background and would not boot further nor would it offer me an instillation prompt to input any product codes.
* * SOLUTION * *
Can I get confirmation from someone that's followed all of these steps that the boot disc will work for a clean/custom install before I go trashing my hard drive?
There is a way to create an image file dispite recieving this error we seem to be all recieving.
1. You will need to use an additional Microsoft command-line tool, called Oscdimg.
Details here
Download here
Download the .zip file and extract it. Then cut and paste the Oscdimg.exe file into your C:\Windows\System32 directory
2. You now need to start up your command prompt, which can be done by Start->Run then enter 'cmd' into the prompt.
- I take no acknowledgment for this, I dug about and found the info at: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html
Thanks SIW2 :)- I had that too, it hung for ages just spinning the disk, but it did eventually load up. Just give it some time. It may have been coincidence that i was bashing my keyboard and slapping the power off button as mine loaded up, but give that a try too XD
- see my above comment. burn worked fine. install doesnt work. hung up on splash page after attempting to boot via cd/dvd. would not offer any prompts for install
- I have to purchase a regular retail version of Win7 tomorrow (er, today, wow) anyway for my non-student BF. I'm assuming I can just use his installation discs along with the product key they emailed me for my own computer, yes? Is fighting with this stupid download and trying to hack my own ISO really worth my time or should I just wait a few hours.
- I have confirmation that it works.
Details, downloaded and extracted Win7Pro files on a vista32 laptop. (I had that stupid error, just ignore it)
Used the command given to create ISO
NOTE: I had some trouble running the command, a permissions error (Error 5). To solve I had to create the iso file in a folder other then the root of C:/, if that doesn't work try typing the command in by hand.(the -b sometimes gets changed while copy/pasting into console)
Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\<YOUR DIR> \expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h C:\<YOUR DIR> \expandedSetup C:\<YOUR DIR> \Win7.iso
I burned the CD with Toshiba's built in burner
Inserted into a desktop with a broken XP installation, booted to disk
Splash screen hung a few minutes... just wait it out
Install was fairly slow, but Windows 7 is flying now.
End Comment - The steps posted above work well, my hard drive was the slow link in the install.
Credit for the solution goes to the user at sevenforums http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l-2.html- Proposed As Answer byStriker_XF35 Thursday, October 22, 2009 9:45 AM
- I tried this and got ERROR: Could not open boot sector file "" and also Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified. Anyone know whats up?
I am on windows xp 32. Are the ones that got it to work on vista?
Update...So I figured out my problem. I thought that the command line was mis-typed and I put a space between -b and C:\. You should not do this. There should be no space! Thanks guys. Hopefully I get this working. Ill keep you all posted. - I retract my previous statement. Other poster are indeed correct. The method of making a runnable boot ISO of windows 7 from the sevenforums.com does indeed work.
YOU MUST WAIT OUT THE SPLASH HANG TIME
In addition, installation is slow as well, even with a 7200rpm drive.
PS: any MS employee, I shake my head at you in disgust and shame. Any customer service/tech support department head should be flogged for NOT DOUBLE CHECKING the installs in addition to not making sure you have people on for 24/7 tech support during a release date.

- Success! Works like a charm! Good luck everyone.
when trying to install Windows 7 I get an error message, similar to many others, which states that my folder may be read-only hence it won't install. I find this utterly rediculous. On the FIRST DAY of release they have such a cokup! Where are the Microsoft 'experts'?!!!
I shouldn't hvae to go through so much hassle of changing the file into an ISO file then burning; that's not what I paid for!
I paid good money to get a simple download without any fuss; and if any problems do arise, a technical person from Microsoft to be at hand to help us out...where are they?!!!
RIDUCULOUS!
Any solutions or do we have to just wait? Not all of us are able to go through so much tangle, and I'm not prepared to see as though I'm a paying customer. No wonder there are so many pirate copies of Microsoft products.

There is a way to create an image file dispite recieving this error we seem to be all recieving.
The problem is that the Expanded Setup folder is not complete, the unpacking process aborts.
See this thread:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/62675a69-2a19-4695-8c8d-8a83be589708- For those of you experiencing the error:
"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security
permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only".
I was also getting the error while trying to unpack the 64 bit edition on my 32 bit WinXp laptop. Luckily, I have a VMware image of Server 2003 64 onto which I copied the three files, ran the above Osdcimg.exe command, and successfully created the ISO file. I just tested it and it seems to boot up fine in VMware Desktop, though I'm actually saving this install for my my other real PC - not to be wasted on a VM.
Anyway, I'm sure this doesn't help most of you that are having the same problem, but if you can't wait for MS or Digital River to fix this bug, you could probably download the VMware player or VirtualBox, find a 64 bit version of Windows via a Torrent or some other method, and create your iso. A lot of work. Maybe someone will post a torrent later on today! - exact same problem. gonna try "run as administrator" when its downloaded again.
- i got to setup but it cannot open
same using 32bit trying for 64bit 7 - I was finally able to burn a DVD, boot and install. Hopefully everything is there despite the initial error message with unpacking. If M$FT thinks this is easy, they need to go back to the drawing board. Win 7 does look nice though, but I haven't spent much time with it as I need to get some sleep after about 7 hours of work trying to install it.Still very glad I have a Mac and only use Windows when I have to.
- yep, same problem. any help would be greatly appreciated
- I have the same problem as well. Absolutely frustrating!
- So has anyone down a clean install with the .iso they created? When I say clean install, I mean format hard drive and then boot from iso created DVD and install and register?
This has not been possible. Upon downloading from the Microsoft Student Website, I get 3 files. These are:
Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
setup1.box
setup2.box
I double click on "Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe" and I get the message "Unloading the Box". Once the status bar reaches the end, I get the following error:
"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only".

So has anyone down a clean install with the .iso they created? When I say clean install, I mean format hard drive and then boot from iso created DVD and install and register?
Yeah, I wiped out my XP partition after booting from the DVD.- I had this problem and low and behold it turned out that the folder the .exe and the tow .box files were in was actually set read only..
So that fixed that, but now it still wont let me install. There is a popup saying that 'this version of this file is not compatabile...... check to see if you need a 32bit or 64 bit version'
Yes, I know I will need to do a clean install, but how?
I can burn the setup files to a bootable DVD as there is a file larger than 2 GB meaning the DVD has to be UDF. I can only make ISO DVD bootable..
So you left XP on, booted and chose a custom install, or did you chose to Format? I have heard scare stories that the product key is only for a upgrade (where it renames you current version to widows.old) rather than suitable for a totally clean install. I want to get rid of all traces of Vista before I upgrade, but want to make sure my product key will work.So has anyone down a clean install with the .iso they created? When I say clean install, I mean format hard drive and then boot from iso created DVD and install and register?
Yeah, I wiped out my XP partition after booting from the DVD.- I'm running 32-bit Vista and I followed the iso image creation instructions.
when I mount the iso, the DVD drive shows up WIN_EN_DVD.
when I double click and try to run setup.exe I get this:
"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher"

I did custom install and deleted and reformatted the partition.

You have to boot from the DVD, not start it within Windows Vista/XP.
when I mount the iso, the DVD drive shows up WIN_EN_DVD.

I thought creating the .iso already would've fixed any architectural differences?- Having the same issue, looks like its creating the expanded setup with an unknown user (why is it not running as me when I am the one running it). When you try to give owner all rights from the permissions window you will see this unkown user be added. So based on that I went ahead and moved my downloaded files into that expandedSetup folder it created in hopes that it would work but got nothing. Anyone able to get passed this im on windows xp pro here.
Why the ____ cant we get a standard iso I'm running 32-bit Vista and I followed the iso image creation instructions.
You need to boot off the iso - not mount it. The install software is 64 bit. What you are attempting to do is run 64 bit software on a 32 bit platform. Burn the iso to a dvd or bootable usb drive and then boot from that.
when I mount the iso, the DVD drive shows up WIN_EN_DVD.
when I double click and try to run setup.exe I get this:
"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher"
I thought creating the .iso already would've fixed any architectural differences?
And did Microsoft accept the product key when you activated? I have heard some users complain that their keys were not accepted.I'm running 32-bit Vista and I followed the iso image creation instructions.
You have to boot from the DVD, not start it within Windows Vista/XP.

Yes, it accepted it, no error message or anything. Apparently the key they give you with the student download is a full key, even though it says upgrade. And did Microsoft accept the product key when you activated? I have heard some users complain that their keys were not accepted.
- Getting the same problem here. I have full admin rights and so on and so forth. This is the first thread/online resource related to the issue unfortunately :(

- Yep, also have exactly the same problem, this release is a joke. Why on earth they couldn't just have a link saying "click here to download the .iso file" instead of all this hassle I'll never know.
It can't be for anti-piracy reasons, the file is useless without the activation key. Hi Guys,

For those of you experiencing the error:
I'm now convinced that this is the problem: you can't unpack the x64 files on an x86 PC, just like you can't run the "Easy" Transfer Wizard!
"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security
permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only".
I was also getting the error while trying to unpack the 64 bit edition on my 32 bit WinXp laptop...
I've got an x64 DVD version of Home Premium, which I will install as a stepping stone to unpacking the x64 Professional box files. If this works, I'll wipe and install Professional and report back.
What a complete and utter shambles!- I've sent an email to Digital River, we'll see if anything comes of it.
The chances are this is because you are not an administrator on the machine or you don't have write access to this directory. save the win7.iso file some wherelse other than c:\ for example create a new directory called win7 and save it there.Hi Guys,

Thanks- if you ordered the back-up media you are in luck because it IS the solution for installing Windows 7 64 bit onto a pc that already has a 32 bit operating system on it.
YOU CAN NOT INSTALL A 64 BIT OPERATING SYSTEM LAUNCHING IT FROM WITHIN A 32 BIT OPERATING SYSTEM. PERIOD CAN NOT BE DONE.
So what can be done?
First
check whether you actually can run a 64 bit operation system, you need to know if your processor is 64 bit.
I suggest you take advantage of a small program made by Steve Gibson (security expert) at his site called securable. link follows:
http://www.grc.com/securable.htm
click the DOWNLOAD NOW green button and let it install and run.
If it says 32 bit you need a 32 bit Operating system- you can not run a 64 bit system sorry, you dont have the hardware.
If it says 64 bit congratulations you have the needed hardware. Let's move on.
You MUST as i said earlier install a 64 bit operating system from outside of the 32 bit operating system and do a CLEAN INSTALL not upgrade.
If you were installaling the same bit width system you may be able to get away with a upgrade install, it is not recommended though. ( 32 bit to 32 bit or 64 bit to 64 bit)
So SECOND thing to do,
BACKUP ALL THE FILES YOU WANT TO KEEP to some external storage media (dvd, cd. usb, external hard drive or network share ect) or lose them during the installation. Those are the choices here.
Third,
you need a dvd or good news here....Windows 7 can be installed from a USB key (much faster)
please read and follow this maximumpc magaine article:

*** i needed to add this note:
YOU BOOT-UP the system with the DVD in the drive you DO NOT run the DVD from within windows, You MUST as i said earlier install a 64 bit operating system from outside of the 32 bit operating system and do a CLEAN INSTALL not upgrade.
I hope that clears up any confusion on this..i like the sevenforums post too.

You would probably be better off using the Microsoft method, if you want to do it via USB http://emea.microsoftstore.com/UK/Help/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-ToolEither way, it does not solve the problem introduced by the clowns at Digital River that does not give you an .ISO as a download. i have same problem, I have called Digital River [germany only] and they told me tha MS is upgrading download file as is coruppted. they advise to redownload file today evening or tommorow.

Just a few things we can try:
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7install/thread/aedb1245-f8f9-42ec-9a0c-1aa932363bbb
The above link has some pretty extensive steps that ended up resolving the issue for some people.
If that does not help:
1. Reset IE to defaults (Tools / Internet Options / Advanced / Reset)
2. Try opening the download page / link in compatibility mode in IE8 (The little ripped page icon to the right of the address bar next to "Refresh" and "Stop Loading X")
3. Try cleaning out the temporary internet files (Tools / Internet Options / Delete)
I'm trying to see what else I can find about this issue and if the steps above do not help, please let me know.
Thanks,
If you find that my answer was what you were looking for, please remember to click the "mark as answer" box below! - microsoft is desperately trying to get back the good feelings about the windows operating system so right now they are not being so restrictive about the keys.
That may change later.
i haven't tried but i dont belive you will be able to use the same key more than once, but corporate keys were always the ones torrents used anyway.
they Finally have a good "family" licensing that i want to promote so i will probably buy that if the premium version, that i pre-ordered in june, performs ok.

- I downloaded the Windows 7 Professional student upgrade from Digital River this morning and have been unable to install it. - I have downloaded it twice so far thinking the first time i had a corrupted file. So i don't think there's a limit to how many times you can download it.
- Ok. Well then I'll try to get a friend's laptop with 64 bit on it and try it that way. If that works and I can make an ISO from that, I'd feel safer than I would installing from an ISO made from an aborted unpack... Which sounds like it works, but who knows. I don't want it to come back and bite me later.
- You don't need to do that, just unpack it in 32 bit and ignore that error, and burn using the above instructions. I re-did the unpacking of the original files under Windows 7 after I installed it and it unpacked without error and had the exact same number of files as it did under 32 bit XP. It's just that the unpacking program tries to open it and gets back an error about it being the wrong architecture and for some reason gives that nondescriptive error.

You could very well be right. But I'd feel safer without the error. But just to re-check this, you said it had 874 files, 199 folders and 3.01GB and 3,239,836,667 bytes in size with 3.01 GB (3,241,648,128 bytes) size on disk? Those EXACT numbers?- I successfully downloaded the Student Offer Windows 7 Professional Upgarde - 64 Bit. The files downloaded are:
Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
Setup1.box
Setup2.box
When I run the Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe program, it starts to unpack the download into the expandedSetup directory. It then ends with the following error:

I have downloaded and tried this on two separate XP machines. The hard disk (drive C) has more than 10GB free before the download. The Download is roughly 3 GB, and when the error occurrs, there is more than 5 GB free left on the disk.
I tried calling the 800-642-7676 support number. They verified that I have a valid Windows 7 key, and told me to call 877-696-7786 for support. At this point I'm on hold.- Merged byMichael - Support EngineerMSFT, OwnerThursday, October 22, 2009 4:09 PMSame issue

- Hi Bgh10788,
Thanks for posting.
There's steps in this thread to create the ISO from the EXE:

I'll post the stpes here:
* * SOLUTION * *
- I take no acknowledgment for this, I dug about and found the info at: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html
Thanks SIW2 :)
I hope this helps.

- I don't think I have any 3gb CDs lying around - would I be able to install the iso to a usb stick?
- Just burn it to DVD.
And yes, you could install it to USB stick. - The only DVDs I have are 700mb.
- DVDs would be minimum 4.7 GB. CDs would be 700 MB.
I have to purchase a regular retail version of Win7 tomorrow (er, today, wow) anyway for my non-student BF. I'm assuming I can just use his installation discs along with the product key they emailed me for my own computer, yes? Is fighting with this stupid download and trying to hack my own ISO really worth my time or should I just wait a few hours.
I am under similar circumstances. I think it will work to simply use the other disc, but input the proper product key.

The solution is that you need to post a link to an iso file. Or make a torrent of the iso file.
There is nothing to work on - post the file!- You're right. Thanks - this horrible issue is making me tired hehe.
- I agree. I have tried making an ISO file and either can't get it to work or get the Code 5 error. Why oh why would you not make this an iso file before distributing it to thousands of people. Something really needs to be done about this and FAST!

Alex - Hi Guys,
If you are joing the party late and are having problems, let me see if I can sum things up for you.
1. You downloaded the x64 bit version with the expectation for installing this on your system. During the process you got a nasty error about "read only" etc. etc.
It looks like to me that when the extraction finishes that the tool trys to launch the setup.exe and start windows. Which won't work when you extract the files on a 32 bit system. If you want to get past this error you need to extract the files on a x64 bit system. This means you need a Vista x64 system or maybe a Windows Server x64 bit system. HOWEVER!!!
It looks like from reports that the extraction works ok and you can create an ISO and burn a disk to boot your system and install Windows 7.
After you run the extraction, maybe run is 2 times to be sure. I think 1 time is really enough.
You then need to create an iso image. The simplest way to make this work is to CUT the entendedSetup directory and past it on C:\
After you have moved (cut/pasted) the diretory, open a command prompt (click start, click run, type cmd, press enter - Run as administrator if in Vista!)
The cut and past this command:
Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h C:\expandedSetup C:\Win7.iso
An iso image will then be in the root of C:. IF you get an error with the creation of the iso, becuase you are trying to put in in the root of the C drive, follow the these steps in the command window.
type mkdir windowsiso [enter]
Then cut and paste this command
Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h C:\expandedSetup C:\windowsiso\Win7.iso
You then can burn the iso with other applications like NERO, or Roxio etc.
Hope this helps.
PS. When you burn the CD, you will have issues trying to open it becuase you can't installed the x64 version on the x32 as an inplace upgrade.
If you have the 32 bit version of the download, you can also create an iso with the above information. You should not have gotten the error ... read only ... issue. Its a result of the x64 application trying to run on a 32bit platform
Enjoy

Thanks for your reply. It is the same version. Although one computer is 32-bit Home Premium and the other is 64-bit Home Premium. I read that the retail upgrade disc package includes both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. So I am assuming I can use the 32-bit retail disc on the 32-bit computer with the Digital River Product Key. And use the 64-bit retail disc on the 64-bit computer with the retail product key.
As long as it's the same version of the key you bought, you should be able to use that disc with your key.

try running the CMD as administrator to fix the code 5 error.

Kevin,
If you are referring to my Code 5 error, it happens when I am trying to boot from disk not while in windows. So with that, your answer doesn't work.- So this "workaround" involving the Oscdimg.exe command is just a way to create an ISO of the expanded folder for burning to a DVD? How can we be sure that the boxes were unpacked completely after receiving the error, and that there won't be any missing files once the install process begins. I plan on doing a clean install, of course.
- I was able to select an ISO as my download format at MS Store
- One thing that I don't understand about the "root cause" detailed above (you downloaded x64 version and trying to run it on 32 bit system) is that it's a very different error if you try to run the 64 bit setup on a 32 bit OS.
Here's the error you SHOULD get on a 32 bit os when you run the 64 bit installer:
"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running . Check your computers system information to see whether you need an x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit) version of the program and then contact software publisher."
There has to be more to this than just downloading the wrong version. Can anyone comment on if downloading the 32 bit version on a 32 bit OS is successful? Is everyone that is encountering this issue running a 32 bit OS and trying to download/install the 64 bit version of windows?
If you find that my answer was what you were looking for, please remember to click the "mark as answer" box below! - @Steve-Texas:
Thankyouthankyouthankyou! And there was me thinking my day was turning into a real shi**er - Seems like a strange error to get if the problem is running a 64bit app on a 32bit os. When I try to run the setup.exe file directly, I get the error that it is not a valid win32 application. I'll try your solution anyway. All it wastes is a DVD.
Is there anyway to make it bootable off a USB drive?
When it creates the ISO image, I get:
Image file is 3242131456 bytes
Writing 874 files in 200 directories
Does anyone else have the same results?
BTW: Microsoft Tech Support says it is a corrupted file, and Digitalriver will have a new file within 24 hours.
I thought Microsoft wanted to streamline the number of versions they put out there. Seems odd that they would create 4 different student download versions (home premium 32, home premium 64, professional 32, professional 64), and not just let you download the regular version. The product key should determine which version you have.
Yeah, tried that too. Thanks anyway. Anyone else have this problem?
Move the three downloaded files to the root C:\ directory if they're not already in there. That's all I can think of.
Yes, and I've also tried right-click 'run as administrator'
Are you logged in as an administrator? So, I can't even unload the box! I run the .exe file, and immediately get the following error:
"The application cannot find one of its requried files, possibly because itw as unable to create it in the folder. Please make sure that the folder in which this application was downloaded is accessible and not read-only."
The 'expandedSetup' folder and it's contents is never created!
Any thoughts on this? I understand the process to create a boot disc for the other installation errors, but I can't even "unload the boxes" so to speak.
Anybody have thoughts? Could it be a corrupted download?- I'm trying the 32 bit version on a 32 bit system and I get the same errors....I'm almost positive that I'm missing lots of files as well.
One thing that I don't understand about the "root cause" detailed above (you downloaded x64 version and trying to run it on 32 bit system) is that it's a very different error if you try to run the 64 bit setup on a 32 bit OS.
I'm pretty sure the answer is that there is very poor error handling in the unpacking program. It tries to open the x64 app after it's finished and receives an error internally but doesn't really pass it on correctly, it just gives a generic I/O error.
If you find that my answer was what you were looking for, please remember to click the "mark as answer" box below!Since It appears I can't run the installer file, does anyone know if there is a program that can "unbox" the .box files? I'm willing to create a boot disk from the files that are unpacked, but I need to get that "expandedSetup" folder first.

Well as I said before, I installed Windows 7 then reran the unpacking program on the original ".box" download files and got no error, and the same number of files. Kevin,
The error comes up when we run "Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe" which unloads the box. What most of us would like to do is to unload the box without any errors, then burn it to a bootable disc, and do a fresh install from there. When we are unloading the box on a 32-bit machine, however, it throws the error that everyone has been getting at the very end of the unload process. I know a lot of us are afraid that it didn't unload properly and don't want to mess up our systems when we try the oscimg method described in various posts. The error you mentioned comes up on a 32-bit machine when we double-click on the "setup.exe" that is unloaded into the expandedSetup folder.- I'm sorry, but this topic should not have been marked as answered. I paid for a working download of Windows 7, and I have instead been provided with a relatively complicated workaround. I'm glad to hear Microsoft is working with Digital River to fix the situation, but by no means is a workaround a solution to Digital River providing software that doesn't work properly.
- There is another thread on this topic here - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/62675a69-2a19-4695-8c8d-8a83be589708 - with answers to many of the questions asked.
Many people are having success installing after recieving said error message when unpacking and burning a disc anyway, some are then experiencing problems during install which may be indicative of the problem. This problem appears to only be when unpacking x64 Professional upgrade on an x86 system, the unpacking error refutedly does not happen when unpacking on a x64 OS.
However, in the thread above someone has claimed to have spoken with Digital River at last and was told that the isseue is to do with corrupted files supplied by Microsoft, I have asked for confirmation of this from the person that posted and directly from Digital River by contactiong them here - https://windows7.digitalriver.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayContactFormPage&Env=BASE&Locale=en_GB&SiteID=mswpuk
I will post any reply from them in both of these threads, please do the same if possible.
Thanks

How many files should be in the expandedsetup folder once it's created? I've only got one file that's 69.4 mb...plus the 2 setup.box files that aren't in the folder...- I followed the procedure as described above, but not all the data got expanded. Received an "unspecified error" message as a reason why the expansion didn't complete.
The file only amounted to about 187 mb.
Iakot below suggests the .iso file should might have to have this size:

Writing 874 files in 200 directories - Hi all,
I went through the workaround to make the .bin, and I'm still having issues. I 'm windows windows xp pro 32 bit edition, and am trying to upgrade to the 64 bit pro from DR.
I created the bin (verified it has 874 files), and burned it to a dvd. I extracted all the files and burned them on a dvd, as well as just putting the .iso file onto a dvd. My PC does not run the install when I reboot. I've changed the boot order to boot from CD, and still no luck. Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks to everyone who has posted solutions!
-Scott - When installing 64-bit Windows 7 from the Digital River student download onto either a Windows XP or Vista 32-bit computer, this error is displayed at the end of Unpacking the Box. This is caused because the unpacking software is 64-bit software.

Create an ISO and then install on a boot disk
Work Around 2:
Unpack the file on a 64-bit computer, cancel the install, and move the files to your 32-bit computer.

explain how to fix this if u could
thanks So we are still stuck with the unpacking issue, nearly a day after the release in the UK. Anyone who had the error but still burnt the ISO experiencing any problems? I would try myself but not after I heard that 'corrupt files' were to do with this problem.
Will Digital River/Microsoft be offering any compensation for this mess? Perhaps a few DVD copies of Win 7 Ultimate full?
The applies to the 64bit Pro Windows 7
******************************************************
You are missing files after you get the error. I compared a failed extract to a succesful extract.
You are missing \sources\boot
******************************************************- MS, why don't you just put up an ISO for download and avoid all the BS with extractors and all this stuff anyway? Seriously...
I have a 64 bit machine, and up until now I haven't had 64 bit Windows (wasn't going to purchase XP again) and have been using 64 bit Ubuntu. Of course the extractor won't work in Ubuntu, so I use my old 32 bit desktop to extract it...nope, because for some stupid reason apparently you can't extract the 64 bit files on a 32 bit machine. So tell me MS, how the ____ am I supposed to get this OS on my PC...if I have to have a 64 bit OS already to extract it!?
THIS MAKES NO SENSE!
I'm sorry for the rant, but I'm really, really angry. It shouldn't be this hard just to get a dang ISO. - -sigh-
I am so frustrated. I stayed up til midnight, extremely excited about Windows 7. I've spent a lot of money on various upgrades (Memory, etc) to maximize my Win7 experience. I pre-ordered my student copy the day the 30 dollar offer came out. I've been counting down the days ever since.
And now this happens. How was this not tested? I refuse to create some .iso with some 3rd party programs in order to run my PAID for OPERATING SYSTEM.
Come on Microsoft, this is a freaking joke. Fix it.
I've been bragging about how awesome Win7 will be, and this ____ happens. This, Microsoft, is why your reputation is crashing.
I'm losing faith.
I should just keep XP. or buy a Mac.
Has anyone spoke to someone at Microsoft on a possible time frame?
I've literally been on hold for 45 minutes with Tech support (Of course!)

Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.- I totally agree with the frustration here. I've been working on this all afternoon. I don't know what's worse: the idea that this workaround is legitimized on this forum even though it's a big load of ____, or the thought that this won't ever be actually fixed as I am just another anonymous buyer and Microsoft doesn't seem to care about me.
I've called tech support, and they were no help; they sent me to product activation. I've tried burning an ISO and each free program can only burn 300 megs maximum, and the windows 7 supposed USB/DVD boot won't work because it says it's incompatible with my computer. What the ____ is going on here?! - Me thinks the problem will be beyond the scope of any tech you might be able to reach on the phone.

"Workaround" isn't acceptable. The fact that this is even happen isn't acceptable. TEST THE DOWNLOADS!
A time frame would be wonderful so I didn't have to waste all my time.
And I'm sure there will not be any compensation for all this time wasted. Here's what they'll probably say: "Microsoft and Digital River apologize for the inconvenience. We assure you that we worked diligently to remedy the situation as soon as possible."
Also, this thread should not be marked as answered.I'm sorry, but this topic should not have been marked as answered. I completely agree. This is ridiculous. Wouldn't it have been easier to provide an .iso to the customers of DR?
- This is just stupid... don't understand why they give us the .exe files and unpacked!! and it doesn't work!! even u unpacked it, we still have to make our own iso files, why can't MS just give us the iso files which will make everyone happy!
MAC next!! - Right, I'm a bit exasperated as are many others gathering by what forums can currently be accessed!
Here are the details:- Student upgrade to Win7 64bit purchased, I'm assuming as this "upgrade path" requires a clean install I would be able to i)format C:\, ii) install Win7 via USB or ISO written to a DVD
- Currently running XP 64bit (what a nightmare for obtaining hardware drivers anyways!)
When attempting to run Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe the first error message encountered is:- The application cannot find one of its required files, possibly because it was unable to create it in the folder. Please make sure that the folder in which this application is accessible and not read only.
- Employing the solution using Oscdimg.exe simply yeilds Error 3: The system could not find the path specified.

- I am having the same problems as most people on here, however I managed to burn a DVD with the ISO file using the workarounds published by a number of people. However, I have a new problem, and it appears some other people are suffering from it too (http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l-8.html).Basically, I have booted from my newly created DVD, and installed Windows 7 on a new HDD (I thought this would be a good opportunity to get a larger HDD) but when I enter my activation key (as sent in an email by Digital River), I am told it is invalid. Apparently, this is because I am installing on a new HDD without a previous version of Windows on it. So what do I do? Do I have to dig out my old XP install disc (which I have left at home - I am a university student), install that, and then install Windows 7?This whole thing has been a complete mess. Given that the beta trials have been going on for so long, how could Microsoft have let this happen? If Operating Systems move into online and cloud computing in a few years time, Google are going to eat Microsoft alive...
- I have the same problem but their is a quick dirty way to fix this problem if you have 64bit windows vista disc.
Backup your C: and format the drive. install a fresh copy of windows vista 64bit on the drive.
next go to the windows 7 link and re-download the software again.
it should work...
:))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) - Oh and by the way, I just wanted to say thanks to the guys who have explained to everyone how to create an ISO file of the Digital River download, which seems to have solved the problem for some people. It's a fairly damning indictment of Microsoft's technical support that you guys are able to find a solution for their own OS before them...

I just tried this and installing Windows 7 64Bit Pro now. I just moved the expendedSetup folder to the C: drive and then did the cmd prompt. ISO was made and away it went, working fine.- Hey AMindfulMan,
Please make sure you are in the same folder in the CMD command prompt that contains the oscdimg.exe file. If you are in c:\users\desktop in command prompt but the oscdimg.exe is in c:\users\desktop\New Folder\ then you will get the error above.
Just make sure that all the files are in the same place, and that you are in that place when you run the command line commands.
I hope this makes sense :)
If you find that my answer was what you were looking for, please remember to click the "mark as answer" box below! - aw, this is disappointing. I've spent so much time trying to resolve this! can't believe this was not picked up before release,,
- I can only laugh atm... it's getting late.
It's amazing that it seems MS and DR were so concerned with protecting the ISO (I assume) that they failed to do any testing!
Credit to all the guys whi identified the Oscdimg.exe workaround, unfortunately this doesnt help those of us running x64 systems who have an immediate failure with unpacking where this solution cannot work because neither the files nor directories yet exist. - I was able to make the iso file earlier, but It included the 3 original files from the download. I followed the instructions from the command prompt.
If I burn that to a dvd it wouldn't boot would it? - I give up.
- I am having a problem trying to upgrade from windows XP Pro 32-Bit to Windows 7 64-Bit. I got a student discount upgrade and I downloaded the upgrade. After I downloaded the upgrade and try to install Windows 7 it says "Unloading the Box": " We are unable to create or save new files in the folder which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only." Is this because I am using a downloaded upgrade and not a disc upgrade? Is there any way to fix this problem? I also ordered the disc option which should be here in a couple weeks, should I hold off on the upgrade until I get my disc?

2 questions before I *attempt* using the workaround for the error:
1) I couldn't validate my legit copy of Vista Home Premium that I installed this morning. So will I be able to install Windows 7 without any problems? Will it require Vista activation before it will start?
2) How will the update work? Just put the disc in at boot and the installation will start?
3) The error I had today with activating Vista (upgrade version) was because my key apparantly only works on choosing upgrade installation - not clean installation. Is this the same with Windows 7?- After 5 hours of trying and reading various forums... I give up.. All my enthusiasm for windows 7 has died. Even if they post a solution today, I won't bother installing it this week. Bravo! MS Bravo!

Ditto. I was so darn excited. Stayed up half the night trying to get it to work, then tons of time today.
I've called support - nothing.
I've tried all these solution - Im not a computer expert so Im struggling with .iso junk
I've scrolled through forums for hours.
I've redownloaded countless times.
What a sad day.
Moderater made a sticky thread 4 hours ago about this problem - not a SINGLE update since. Lack of timeframe is fail.- I have been trying to get this to work for two hours now. Tried the workaround, but for some reason it looks like the ISO file is not being created. The black command box flashes for a split second and then disappears. Contacted customer service, they directed me towards technical support, whose automated answering system directed me back to customer service. This is unacceptable. As many have said, an existing workaround does not make up for the fact that Microsoft has failed to deliver its promised product.
For those who have tried the workaround, am I typing something in wrong? Why doesn't it create an ISO file?
Thanks. - I have also given up after spendng my evening trying to resolve this. I will check back on forums tommorow morning and hopefully there will be a solution.
I compared the unpacked files in a 32 bit and 64 bit environments, here are the results -
Windows 7 Professional x64 Upgrade (via Digital River)
- MD5 Checksums for Source files
Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe - 73D13A1000069E372F7478CF1C426B7A

You can use this to check that the files you downloaded are the same.
I can confirm that said error message do not arise in 64 bit environments, I used Vista 32 and XP 64 for comparison using the same source files with errors arising only in Vista 32. I checked the output files from each OS for comparison.- expandedSetup Folder Files/Size Comparison
Vista x86 - 874Files, 199 Folders/3,239,836,668bytes
XP x64 - 874 Files, 199 Folders/3,239,836,668bytes
Identical size and number of files which makes it very probable that they're the same. This has been confimed by another. You can use one of the successful mentioned methods to create an ISO.
Hopefully we can now put this problem to bed as a non-issue like suspected, though it would be nice if Microsoft or Digital River said something...anything frankly.

- This DOES NOT WORK if you cannot get your expandedSetup folder fully unloaded. Seems like everyone who downloaded the student versions from Digital River cannot fully "Unload" their .exe files and get the following error:"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only."The thing is, even when the folder is checked to NOT be read-only and the .exe is run as an administrator, the error still comes up. I don't get it because other files will write themselves within the selected folder. The "unloading" process even creates temp files and unloads almost all of itself before this error.Any ideas?
- I don't think that is the case either, im using 32 bit vista at the moment, and im upgrading to 32 bit windows 7. However, i ran my laptop in administrator mode (did this by running command prompt as admin and typeing "net user administrator /active:yes", then restarted), this got the progress bar to half way while unpacking before i got the same error. Hope this helps with the solution.
So i've downloaded from Digital River, now i get to 99% and it says Unable to Copy files to downloaded location as it is read only. When it's not.. I've attempted to burn it to an ISO... no such luck either.. any suggestions?

Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.- I'm having a bit different problem that what I found here. I did the ISO thing and burned a Boot DVD, the process completed successfully. When I boot to it, I attempt to perform a custom install and it says it cannot install windows because it is missing files or something along those lines, however I have the complete 3.02 GB Boot Disc. Any ideas? Also, I have a copy of windows xp 64 bit, if I install this will the download work ok?
- Keep it simple, ISOs obviously exist, put them on Digital River and stop messing around. $30 for a day of frustration, the saying for the day is "Maybe I should have gotten the Mac"

I heard that tomorrow several techzines will be running a headline along the lines of "Microsoft gives students diabetes"...- I did the entire solution.
However, when installing it I can only get it to custom install. I opened up Vista and tried it that way (as it suggested to upgrade) but got the following error message:
"This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of Windows, restart )boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select Custom (advanced)"
So is there no way for me to simply upgrade, or do I need to do a clean install?
-Rachel - I downloaded Win7 Pro 32bit from the official store. Files downloaded completely. Fine.
Datd downloaded did NOT include a disc ISO to burn. An .exe extractor created a "expandedSetup" folder-and ran the setup. Fine. I have nothing to create a disc ISO from which to boot and follow ANY official instructions.
When the Setup runs, I get a dialogue box with ONE option>> "Install Windows"
I click said.
I get error code 0x80070490-telling me there is not enough disk space on this partition (needs at least 680MB or so)...I friggin have a 320GB NTFS formatted drive here (all one partition) that is the Windows boot drive. I click OK to the error message and "Install Windows" quits.
How do I get my Win7 I paid for???
FWIW, I'm running Win7RC1 Build 7100 on this PhenomII quad-core tower.- Merged byMichael - Support EngineerMSFT, OwnerFriday, October 23, 2009 1:53 AMsame issue

Diabetes, just the way M$ has liked it in the last 4 years, annoying and no cure in sight. (And to think I was fooled into thinking that 7 would be different, ha!). After this mess up I am almost afraid to install it if and when it does install correctly.- more than 12 hours with no solution from M$ in sight, get the Mac, lol.

MICROSOFT - i was finally able to get this to download correctly and I was unable to unpack it (after 6 or 7 download attempts) - could it be that when your computer goes to sleep the download gets messed up?? Just an idea.....
- I think I am having the same problem where I cant fully unload the expandedSetup folder although I can't be certain. I get the error message you're talking about but the file shows up on my desktop. I tried burning it to a bootable disk and loading it up on a partition but it only loads windows to a blue screen with a bird and some graphics on it. I get a cursor but nothing else. Maybe my disk copy was corrupted?
anyone have any ideas? - I did the dos trick, started the install...now says my product key is invalid!!
- EASIEST SOLUTION HERE:
Confused by the command line/CD burning mess? I was too. The method here (2nd on list) to create a bootable USB key worked EASILY for me. Far easier than creating a bootable CD. You only need a 4gb USB memory key or larger. Step-by-step with photos:

I hope Digital River gets burned by this in a bad way. They have royally destroyed the Windows 7 launch by doing this. After all of the marketing MS put into this selling Windows 7 as the best OS, it's a shame Digital River caused these problems for us. I tried this and got ERROR: Could not open boot sector file "" and also Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified. Anyone know whats up?
I have this problem too, despite I check the typing quite many times, and I'm sure there is no space between -b and C:\ on my typing, but I still got the same message as quoted.
- For EVERYONE out there wondering about this...I found THIS:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html
It requires command line work. I'm burning the disc iso now. But the instructions in the 1st post seem to work.
So much for being easy to use and install. Cripes. Did you do a Custom Install? I did that, formatted my HDD, and my Digital River "upgrade" key worked just fine. I made the bootable USB key version found here:
http://www.notebooks.com/2009/10/22/how-to-make-the-student-discounted-windows-7-upgrade-bootable/#comment-114381Hello,
We are aware of this issue and are currenly working with Digital River.
There have been a few work arounds posted in the thread linked below which this thread will be merged into.

Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.- Shame on you micro$oft... you had no problem taking our money but can't deliver??? Wow, and to think that after all that Visa nonsense I actually thought I'd give you people a chance. Look at all these paying customers with the same issues!
Give us ISO images! Otherwise, when I wake up tomorrow, I'll be asking for a refund of the price I paid weeks ago to be able to adopt windows 7. What's the problem?? Why can't America's "top engineers" and "best programmers" provide PAYING CUSTOMERS with the product we paid for? Why cannot you not AGAIN deliver???
I USED TO BE A PC
UNTIL MICRO$OFT SCREWED ME OVER AGAIN & CRASHED MY RELEASE PARTY
NOW I'M A MAC... AND NEVER COMING BACK!
Geez, wonder why market share is slipping- M$ is losing server market share to linux and home OS market to Apple.... now I see why. As if Vista wasn't evidence enough of that. HAHAHAHA you people better have my refund ready when I call tomorrow or I'm filing a chargeback with my CC company. Seriously.
- The USB key solution works easiest:

I invested over 5 hours in trying to burn DVDs before I found this far easier method. You need a 4gb or larger USB key, though.
Can you compare the md5sums of the two runs?- expandedSetup Folder Files/Size Comparison
Vista x86 - 874Files, 199 Folders/3,239,836,668bytes
XP x64 - 874 Files, 199 Folders/3,239,836,668bytes
- I think we should all get compensated for time wasted on this. I generally charge $25/hour and I've put about 6 hours of my time into this now. I'd like a check for $150 USD please. Or if nothing else, at least a free year of Xbox Live for my trouble.
- More than 12 hours since release and this is the best answer that you have for us, EVERYONE here should call for a refund tomorrow!
I give up. I surrender. Are you happy MS? I'm going back to Linux. I was excited about Windows 7, but because of your complete and utter disregard for your customers, I'm just going to chalk this one up as a $30 loss. At least I didn't buy the retail upgrade.
Ditto! Except the $30 loss, Digital River/Microsoft WILL reimburse me, or I see a class action suit in the not-too-distant-future!
I went over and got my sister's Vista x64 laptop and still cannot even unpack the freaking box that the ISO shouldn't have been in to begin with.

MICRO$OFT.... FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL!!!- fun fun fun, had to combine the methods out there of compiling an iso from the download, mounting the iso to properly apply bootsector to a usb drive, and to top it all off I also had to purchase 32 bit (had planned to buy a 2nd key later anyway) and download that so as to get a working 32 bit bootsect executable that I could actually USE to make the usb drive bootable for the install. why force the executable to only work on 64 bit when it is identical in both versions? they've basically distributed a file that is no good to anyone migrating to 64 from 32 or from any version of XP, which are the people with largest incentive to get windows 7.
- I'm having the same problem as many, I have XP PRO 32-bit, and after I open the Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe file, it has a progress bar pop up, and when it finishes the "We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded" message pops up.

I moved all my stuff to just the C drive, (setup1 and 2, retail thing, expanded setup folder, even the DLM downloader just to make sure), and I get the following error from the cmd prompt.
I type this in...
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\expandedSetup\boot\
etfsboot.com -h C:\expandedSetup C:\7.iso
and this comes out...

Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated! - "Hey students, want a great deal, only $30!" "(fine print) Windows 7 will be a waste of your time and will not work unless you own all the following 1. a Vodoo Doll, 2. 10-11 DVDs for non-working boot disks, 3. a DVD burner, 4. Command line knowledge, 5. a 4gb flash drive, 6. a lot of luck, 7. non-corrupt files from Digital River, 8. a second Vodoo doll, 9. lots of sanity, 10. a non-student ISO of win7."
From M$ with Love - There is a very simple solution. I was reading on another forum and saw the program Vlite recommended. Once you get it downloaded and run the expandedsetup you will probably get the error about read-only that everyone is getting. Just disregard that. Open Vlite and have it create an image of your expandedsetup folder and then use the file it creates to burn the image. It takes care of everything and works perfectly. I went from vista home premium 32 bit to windows 7 professional 64 bit with no problems. I am up and running now :).
- Hi, I bought my copy using the Australian Digital Rivers deal and basically I am experiencing the same issues.
I managed to prepare an ISO before work this morning and shall look forward to a weekend of Windows Installation :)
I just want to say to Michael the MS Engineer - Please stop copy pasting your old posts every few hours unless you have some good news for us.

Let's all call tomotrrow and demand refunds! These people think we're just giving them money for nothing! I didn't purchase Win 7 to f%#@ with a command line or USB key...- That would be great if the expandedsetup folder actually worked. A lot of us here are getting shafted with incomplete ones. My expandedsetup folder is not even 200MB.
- unfortunately though this wont work for those of us that cant get it to expand at all.. I click it to run and I immediately get the read only error.. cant unbox at all.
I believe i have found a solution. however you need windows xp 64 bit
had the same problem as you all on windows xp 32 bit, so installed windows xp 64 bit, ran the unpacker or whatever its called and it created the files sucessfully.
I then ran the setup file and selected the custom install and installing windows 7 as we speak.
No need to burn iso or anything as it saves xp as windows.old
I am currently on the installation and so far so good, no errors
will update as i go on but hopefully this will work for me and everyone else!
update: setup completed without any errors, so if you are having probs try get a copy of xp64bit and install over that. may not be the best solution but it meant i didnt have to deal with any iso burning or anything else
good luck
i no this isnt the best solution, but if you can access xp 64bit then this works, but microsoft should come up with a propper solution! That would be great if the expandedsetup folder actually worked. A lot of us here are getting shafted with incomplete ones. My expandedsetup folder is not even 200MB.
how big should it be? mine is 3.01 GB (3,241,648,128 bytes) (size on disk)- Someone please help me.
I have made the .iso DVD
What the heck do I do with it? when I "Open" it, poweriso opens and it just lists whats in the .iso
Then it wants to extract the files?
What is going on? What the heck am I supposed to do with the DVD? - I have cut and pasted this and changed the directory to DESK
Oscdimg.exe -u2 -bC:\window7 \expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h C:\windows7 \expandedSetup C:\windows7 \Win7.iso
Is this correct, or are the spaces you put in that should not be I merely changed the <YOUR DIR> with mine, and left the rest the same, but it does not seem to work. Does this mean there are not spaces in and it is all one line together? Can you type the correct manner using the window7 so I know what it is suppose to look like. Additional I am using XP right now; will this small program work with XP? Someone please help me.
So you got the .iso on the DVD? ok, make sure you have everything backed up just in case, have the disc in your comp, restart and boot from the CD. when you restart you screen should say press any key to boot from CD

When I put the .iso into poweriso, it says "non-bootable image" in bottom left corner. somethin wrong?- I had this same problem and got it to work. I wrote it up as a How-To and hopefully it helps you resolve your issue: http://karthikeyankarunanidhi.com/plugins/how-to
I am working on 32-bit Windows XP and I installed windows 7 64-bit using the student download. I had "unloading the box" errors and also with selecting a drive to install Windows 7 as dual-boot... had to change the drive type from dynamic to basic
hope it helps - I tried unboxing the files on my sister's Vista x64 laptop (I have Ubuntu x64 and Server 2008 x32 on my desktop) and it still didn't work. The whole purpose of this was so that I could get rid of server 08 (I got it free through dreamspark) and actually run a 64 bit Windows on my desktop. I never would have guessed that it would require you to already have an x64 OS. That just doesn't make any sense at all...
I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DOWNLOAD A FREAKING ISO IMAGE!

Results!
Initially I couldn't find software to do this, after your request I searched some more and found this - http://www.irnis.net/soft/acsv/
Created a list of checksums for the 32bit expansion and then verified that list against the 64bit folder contents.
The result was zero errors. Which means both folders have identical contents.
This means go ahead and ignore said error message in a 32bit OS and use the technique stated to burn.
Pfft, I feel like I should be paid for the work I have done for Microsoft today.
Alex- I swithched to Mac after getting feed up with all the problems, viruses, and slow speed. So now i was excited about the good rewiews and stuff so i got the upgrade for win 7 for boot camp on my mac and i get the same message. What a surprise Windows Fails again. I read everything, several threads. I followed the instructions PERFECTLY. Made the iso, burnt it. It booted and ran, then an error message and it cant install. F*CK!!!
Someone just post a simple solution that is easy to understand. The "SOLUTION" that is posted here is not a solution. What, are we expected to go out and download an illegal copy of XP 64 bit just to install this.
I'm running 32 bit Vista. what infuriates me the most is that on the digital river site, when I ordered it, in the FAQ it says how to check if your pc is 64 bit compatible. Mine was, so it said go for it.
I ordered the DVD along with the download from digital river. I didn't think I'd have internet access by this time, but I just used my brothers internet to download it and to post this now at his house. I am going to be leaving soon so someone please post something. - Add me to the list of people that can't even unpack the files. My expanded setup folder only gets to ~200MB before I get the "unspecified error". How hard is it to post the .iso images?
- FINALLY!
IT WORKS IT WORKS! FINALLY!
HOW?
IT WORKS IT WORKS!- I couldn't even reply right away. Kept taking me to my profile. Bleh. Anyways.
I am going from Vista x64 to 7 x64 and I receive the unspecified error. I am not getting the other error involving the new file speil. And to be honest some of the work arounds proposed really don't say if they handle one problem or both problems.
Which one has proven to work with the unspecified error issue during the unpacking of the setup boxes? I almost make it to the end of setup1.box.
I've been a fanboy of 7 and have preached and converted others I work with to the enlightenment... now Microsoft is making me look bad. Thanks, I should stick to Linux. - it's been almost 24 hours now.... Still waiting...I refuse to use any tricks to install my OS, the one I paid for... I expect better. If any MS people are still reading this, just pass on this message to whoever is in charge.Seriously.. what is so difficult to just upload the iso till you fix the DR c r a p? is piracy that you are worried about? well, iso will be out on torrents within a few days anyways. As soon as people get their pre-ordered DVDs, they are going make images. In fact, the intermediate solution that you guys are recommending, asks us to make an iso! people have already posted these images on various file sharing servers. Wake up! just give us an official iso.
UPDATE: I received my Amazon.com pre-order W7 Upgrade disc in the mail today. It contains 2 discs. One for 32-bit and one for 64-bit. I popped the 32-bit in my 32-bt computer and did a fresh install. When it asked for the Windows Product Key, I input the key I received from Digital River in an email. It worked just fine! I am in business! Woohoo!
Anyone?I have to purchase a regular retail version of Win7 tomorrow (er, today, wow) anyway for my non-student BF.
Can anyone with more smarts than me, confirm this?
ThanksThanksI hope it works.
Thanks for your help. I think I will go this route rather than deal with DigitalRiver's blunder.By the way, we should be pissed at Digital River more than MS. Those guys suck! I used them for the MS Ultimate Steal program where I could get MS Office at a discounted price. I had all kinds of problems with their download and with their customer service.Microsoft needs to dump Digital River right away!!
