    Hi,

I have Vista Home premium Sp1 32 bit.

I tried to install Vista Sp2 through Windows update it failed with an error 80070026

    Steps I have tried.
    1:Unintalled mcafee
    2:clean boot
    3:installed KB947821

Tried to intall Sp2 again getting an error 80073712 via windows update

Tried to install Sp2 via manual download getting an error "Installation unsuccessful" and giving a link to install System readiness tool again.

I have checked the checksur log , it has found 128 errors and fixed only one.
I tried running sfc scan it stuck at 100% did not give any error message.

I have a gateway computer and do not have the Vista reinstallation disk to perform unplace upgrade and also I have installed Sp1 via windows update so I cannot do factory restore.Any suggestions

    Thanks and Regards.
    Raj

    Hello Vinoth Raj,

Your system may need previous updates before you can install Service Pack 2.  If you do not have Service Pack 1 installed install it.  To cehck for updates:
    1. Click Start Start button , click Control Panel , and then click Security .
    2. Under Windows Update , click Check for updates .
You can also use the installer cleanup tool.  Here's a link to download the installer cleanup tool.

    Raj,
The last error you got when you tried to install the service pack 2 update indicates an inconsistency in a component store.  You said you tried running system file checker but it would not complete?  That is the tool I was going to suggest.  Does your computer boot?  If so, try booting in safe mode and see if you can run the system file checker again:

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow
When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

If that does not resolve your issue, here are some detailed troubleshooting steps specifically for service pack 2 install errors:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366 - How to troubleshoot Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 service pack installation issues.

Have you tried doing a system restore back to a date before the problem occurred?  I know you said you have an OEM version of Windows and can't do a factory restore, but you could use the Windows System Restore to go back to a restore point before the problem began, unless you have turned system restore off.
To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:
Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.
    Click Finish.

The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

I hope this information has been helpful to you.  Please let us know if we can provide further assistance.
    Thank you,

No effect, i receive the same error: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
I even install The System Update Readiness Tool, restart the pc  and run update but still no effect. I call to my local MS support and they told me the same like here: Mmmm, aaa, mmm ... no idea, we will call you back when we have solution.

I start thinking for what i pay and it's seems the best solution will be to download from torrents a new vista with sp2 and install it. It's too bad that i can't return back my vista to my local dealer to return back my money.

I already tried it and it didn't work (no surprise there).

This tool does not list any programs other than Micorosft Office programs in the "Applies To" section.  How is this supposed to work for any other programs.

Has anyone resolved this besides using a cleanup tool that only deals with the MS Office applications and appears to have nothing to do with Vista?

It is unacceptable that you release a terrible OS, then you realease terrible SPs which wont even install and then you offer resolutions which require the user to spend a day or more in front of the PC on a trial and error process that might not even work....

What a nice way to boost your sales (W7) during the crisis....

    Congratulations.
