    Hey CLJ3,

I also heard mention of KB972036 update potentially causing issues like this in certain regions but I haven't confirmed it yet.  If you don't see the KB973879 as an update to uninstall check to see if you have KB972036 instead and try removing that one to see if it resolves the issue.  Please make sure to post back with your results.  If it does not resolve the issue please make sure to reinstall the update that was just uninstalled to keep secure.

    I hope this helps.

    Hey everyone,

I found a potential solution that you might want to try.  I've heard that this might be caused by an update released this week, on Tuesday, August 25.

    Here are some steps:

    1. Uninstall KB 973879 from Programs and Features / Installed Updates
Potential Issue:  You might get a blue screen prior to uninstalling the update.  If so, disconnect any devices from the system like printers, scanners, usb disk drives, etc.  Also disable Wireless and Bluetooth on laptops and retry.  If you are unable to uninstall the update try step #2

    2. Use System Restore and restore your computer to a date prior to Tuesday, August 25 (PST time).  Please remember that after your have used system restore you may need to install updates again to keep secure.  You can try to upgrade to SP2 before doing this last check for updates, then when SP2 is installed check for updates again and install whatever is available.  If you are unable to use System Restore, please try step #3

    3. Use a Windows PE boot CD to boot into the Windows Pre-boot Environment (Retail Windows Vista DVDs have this functionality) and uninstall KB 973879 from within this Windows PE environment.

Please let me know if any of this helps!

    Thanks,

Same issue - Dell Inspiron 32bit with sp1. I went ahead and installed anyway, and so far it seems to work fine (sp2 is there, computer didn't crash). I would NOT recommend doing this unless reinstalling the whole OS isn't an inconvenience.

Same here, on a Dell 32 bit. I have had on automatic updating so assumed any updating that needed to be done, was being done, now this. I just changed antivirus software and also downloaded a "fix-it" deal, so I thought that might have created some sort of glitch. Now I'm wondering if the glitch isn't with microsoft. I don't really understand where to go from here; just how important is it to upgrade to sp2? I assume fairly important; wouldn't you just know, with that being the only update I am having a problem with. Please, someone, give us a solution to this.

Got the same issue today when upgrading to SP2 running Vista home premium x64. I have just made a brand new installation on my 1½ year old laptop, so I only got drivers, updates and antivirus.
I have checked that all my drivers are up to date, so that can't be the problem

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NS255D/S and I was having the same problem all of you have expressed. I contacted a Microsoft tech representative through a chat and they told me what to do. Go to: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=11732&st=1 . Pick your OS and follow steps and when you get there click on chat. A tech rep will help you through the process. It took me close to 2 hours with about 5 or 6 blue screens. But it seems to work perfectly. Note: Don't worry if after you install it, you restart and when it is configuring updates you get a blue screen - I did many times.

I didn't try the proposed solution listed in the last person's post, but it may work. I just preferred help from someone who knew what they were doing because my laptop is only a month old.

Would suggest having the disk handy for sp1 just incase it messes up. But if this doesnt work i have other plans to try and stop the BSOD. Hello Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has tried installing the Hotfix listed in KB967752 to see if it fixes this issue?  I can't say that this is the solution or not but I didn't see anyone mention that they had installed it or not.

Here's the links to the article and the hotfixes

NOTE: Please make sure you download the version that corresponds with your Windows architecture (64 bit or 32 bit) above.

The hotfix is for Windows server. That doesn't seem quite right. What would be helpful to know is what Microsoft Device Specific Modules (MSDSM) are. If they are only server - related, then maybe the error message is a bug.

I didn't mean "bug" as in infection or virus.  I meant "bug" as in a flaw in the update software.

I would second this, for now, since I installed sp2 despite the message and had absolutely no problems. As long as you can repair/reinstall if everything falls apart.

I ran into the original error message, and have held off on SP2 on the x86 64 bit install (x86 is the chip, 32 bit is the O/S bit size.  There's also Itanium x64 ...)

Interested in the fix, if any.

This is on a brand new Dell E6500 with Vista 64 bit

I also have a 2nd brand new E6400 that is having problems with KB973879; if I apply it, I have to use system restore (the boot time fixer does) to get the laptop bootable again.  Those symptoms are different, I'll post about it separatly.

The problem may be due to software downloads that utilize "Microsoft Visual C++."  Upon system restore, my machine apparently uninstalled recent software downloads utilizing "Microsoft Visual C++."  Later, update "Vista Service Pack 2 x64 system KB948465" did not appear in the available "Windows Updates."

In appreciation of Mr. Hau's service, I've provided some additional details here that may be useful in understanding this issue.  I didn't experience any serious computer malfunction.  I simply thought I needed to somehow install this update that continued to fail installation...

I received the update notice for "Vista Service Pack 2 x64 system KB948465," Wednesday, 08/26/09, after downloading "Ad-Aware" and "CCleaner" software on my one-month-old "Gateway desktop."  I experienced the identical installation error message:  "MSDM Microsoft Knowledge Base 967752."  I followed steps 1 and 2 of Mr. Hau's solution strategy, and upon system restore, the "Ad-Aware" and "CCleaner" desktop icons vanished, and I assume I lost those software programs during restore--perhaps I'll just need to return to the websites and download them again someday if I need them.  My computer behaved oddly during the finishing processes of system restore--black screen, slow startup, gradual display of bottom toolbar, etc.  "Microsoft Live OneCare" did not appear on the toolbar until I rebooted a third time.  Since "Ad-Aware" and "CCleaner" apparently were deleted during system restore, "Windows Update" never included the "KB948465 Service Pack 2 Update."  Since it appears the "Ad-Aware" and "CCleaner" downloads may have caused my problems, I shall now solely rely on "Microsoft Live OneCare" and "MalwareBytes" for all of my security needs.  My machine seems fine, and I appreciate Mr. Hau's attention to this matter.  I hope that my reply might assist others experiencing this problem.  I hope this reply may be of some technical value to Mr. Hau and his dedicated team...

It should be noted that after "System Restore," the update "Vista Service Pack 2 x 64 system KB948465" did not appear in available updates upon checking for updates after executing "System Restore."

Please feel welcome to contact me with any questions or comments.  Thank you for your assistance...

    Hey Jackhewyhx6,

I would suggest trying the system restore route (step #2 in the answer post) to see if that resolves the issue.  Since this issue is specifically caused by the update, if you still have the same problem after restoring to a date earlier than the update was available, it might be a different issue that you are seeing.

If it's not fixed by the system restore I suggest creating a tech support case with Microsoft.  You can get check out the Vista solution center here : http://support.microsoft.com/ph/11732#tab1

The link to open a case is up on the top right of the page, but check out the solutions there first to see if anything helps.

Frankly all these recommendations are unacceptable from a MS perspective. You've released a buggy patch and should release a seamless fix for this bug that doesn't include me having to system restore. I'll do that only in extreme circumstances and understand why others may seek to use these short cuts, but this is pretty pathetic that we're forced to go through these machinations to right a systemically faulty automatic update. If someone hears of a one stop solution I'd love to hear. Thanks. Sorry to be negative but I got stuck in an endless loop of potential spyware installs when I tried to find a solution to what should never have been a problem in the first place only to find the best solution to a primary MS patch be a system restore.

    I agree.

I got the same "967752" warning upon installing SP2 on my Dell Inspiron 9200 tower.  I canceled the update.  My system is working fine on Vista Ultimate SP1, and I just wanted to install the SP2 update to have the "latest and greatest" so to speak.  I'm not installing a buggy patch and then jumping through hoops to get it to work properly.  I'll wait a month or two until Microsoft works this out, which seems to be the SOP for them anyway.

This solution is completely unhelpful.  For example, most new computers come with Vista preinstalled and no Vista CD provided.  I presume this is done to enhance Microsoft's profits and reduce their costs, even though for a product as unstable as Windows it is enormously inconvenient to its customers.   Please elevate this problem immediately to your superiors at Microsoft because this problem is affecting thousands of customers adversely and is busily crashing computers worldwide. Meanwhile please withdraw SP2 before it does further damage.  This is URGENT and it is NO JOKE!!!!!!!

I disagree, going ahead and installing it resulted in a black screen of death for me.....manually rebooting it resulted in a System Repair and System Restore, with loss of all previous Restore points. Microsoft needs to quit using the public as beta testers for its incompetence and withdraw this SP2 immediately while they test it more rigorously.  Hey Microsoft, splurge and buy desktops and laptops from each of the 5 or 6 brands and TEST YOUR PRODUCTS ON THEM before releasing to (forcing them on) the public!!!! This incompetence and arrogance is outrageous!!!

I agree with you, fortunately I looked this problem up on Google and found that I shouldn't update it.  IT's a good thing I didn't install it since I , then, would of had blue screen errors.
Microsoft, please fix the whole SP2 update so that next time my Windows Update pops up, it doesn't contain a update that crashes my PC.

Have exactly the same problem with my son's Acer Aspire 7520. His laptop had not been online for a few weeks so we spent last night updating quite a few things on it.
Windows Security Center also states that AVG is not turned on. Clicking on the option 'Turn on now' does not appear to do anything although the AVG interface itself states that "all security features are working correctly and are up to date!" There was no indication of this problem by Windows Security Center before the updates were installed.

well it seems that most of you are using laptops and getting errors when closing the lid, however i just want to state that i am having the same error using an e-machines t5088 desktop.  i spent the entire night reinstalling vista ultimate because i was running the x86 version and was unaware that my machine supports x64.  while i was on x86 the sp2 update never came up.  i have not tried any of the fixes and im not going to install this for now.  i just wanted to supply a little more info.

I am so tired of jumping through the microsoft hoops and running the mazes to get nowhere.  This is an ongoing issue with everything they do.  We replace our main computers every three years which is next summer.  The decision has been made to get off the microsoft merry-go-round and round and round and jump on the "other" side.  Not only are we changing but we are changing my mother over also and junking these systems so noone has to suffer the tourture of of Microsft.  Everything they have done since vista is halfa#### at best.  There only focus it the dollar and forget quality of the product or what it will do to any of us out here using it.  Our time is not their money.  They have that already, so they do not care.  If they fix this problem before next summer we will install it, if not, it will not matter for these three machines.  I have had nothing but issue after issue with vista and I did not even want it.  It was forced on me.  Thank god for the laptop that still runs on XP and runs perfectly!!! It has not crashed once in 6 years which is more than I can say for my desk top that is two years old and crashes every other day at least! Mind you the laptop is six years old but I refuse to get rid of it because of the XP!  Sorry, just needed to vent!  It just frustrates me to no end that they done even care.  They dont care about the quality of their product and they dont care about what the lack of quality does to us as their customers!

The issue started with an update released on Tuesday, August 25 and since the issue was identified, that update has been pulled from the Windows Update site so no new users are receiving the update.

For those that can't boot and DONT HAVE A DVD and can't get into Windows to uninstall the update, you can download the Windows Automated Installation Kit on another computer and create a Windows PE image to boot from (to perform step #3 in the Answer post).

    Windows Automated Installation Kit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=C7D4BC6D-15F3-4284-9123-679830D629F2&displaylang=en
    Documentation for WAIK: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=993c567d-f12c-4676-917f-05d9de73ada4&displaylang=en

There is no need to withdraw Vista SP2, as SP2 does not cause this issue nor does it cause any damage.  I HIGHLY recommend that people install Vista SP2 and all updates that are available through Windows Update.

I thought I noticed something funny with the 973879 update, it wasn't showing up on the web site.  I was trying to confirm it was the problem.  Looks like it is :)

I posted about my issues in the thread http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistainstall/thread/7063aec8-f207-48ff-99cc-173f8d9227a9

This was a brand new laptop with SP1 on it (thanks Dell), but kept going to the Startup Recovery screen every time I would do a windows update. After a LOT of experimentation, I found it was in fact 973879 was the problem at least on this laptop.

The odd thing is that I don't get SP2 pushed to this laptop, and per my other thread, it IS on sp1, not SP2 (6.0.6001, Service Pack 1 Build 6001, x64).  So some prereq isn't setup right.

On 2 machines (Brand new Dell E6400 and 6500) I now don't even get the prompt for SP2.  Only SP1 is on the machine.

(added) This is after removing KB973879 on one machine, and 5 failures to apply it on the 6400, and then it disappearing from the list per Kevin's note about it being pulled.

You can always download Vista SP2 directly from the Microsoft website and install it manually if you don't want to wait for Windows Update to push it.

I took the time last night (4 hours) to talk with MS tech support.  During a remote desktop session with the tech he attempted to do the Windows Update SP 2 two times, each time resulting in a BSOD.  The last attempt (which worked) was to download the full version of SP 2 from the following link.
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=656c9d4a-55ec-4972-a0d7-b1a6fedf51a7&displayLang=en
This is a massive, 577 Mb, download.  This is the version of the service pack which installed on my system, a new Dell Studio 1737, 64 bit Vista Home Premium.  If you have a broadband connection I would download and install from this file.  The tech did check to be sure all the drivers on the system were digitally signed, which they were, including the MSDSM driver.  There was no BSOD during the installation which took about an hour to accomplish.
For all of you searching for an answer this is the one which worked for me.  Your mileage may vary and good luck!

Uninstalling KB972036 solved the problem for me.

      - My environment: Brand new Dell E6500 with Windows Vista Business 32bit (hardware supports 64bit, but Dell provided 32bit Vista in the package)

    My story:
    - Windows update offered Vista SP2 update. Started ->Boom, MSDSM warning.
    - Instead of ignoring, launched Google.
    - Found this thread, read to the end.
    - Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View Installed Updates
    - Searched for KB972036 -> Uninstall
    - Restart...
    - Launched Windows Update again.
    - As expected, SP2 update came up again (after a few minutes).
    - Downloaded once more, started installing.
    - NO WARNING, NO PROBLEMS.
    - Happy end.

I started trying to do a clean retail install of Vista Ultimate x64 on Tue 25 August, on a Dell M4400 laptop. It previously had the OEM installed Vista Business x64 and had accepted SP2 without problems when it was issued. I get the same MSDSM, driver not compatible problem, even with a full SP2 download (KB948465 - 5 language x64)

I don't appear to have either of the KB972036 or KB973879 mentioned. Were either of them rolled up into one of the cumulative updates?

Edited to add:  KB972036 was there under Control Panel, Programs, View installed updates (more obvious there than in windows update history list).

After removing KB972036 get no complaint from installer, and SP2 installs without any fuss.

Thanks Kevin - right, I was going to go look for it, but wanted to give you full 'steps to reproduce' the issue.

What's odd was on the 6500, SP2 showed up, but then I got the thread subject error, so I cancelled it. It shows up as failed.  I then removed KB973879, now SP2 won't show up even after repeated 'check for new updates'.  Weird, huh?

On the laptop that rebooted every time KB973879 was attempted, SP2 never showed up.  They are essentially identical laptops, the only difference was the 6400 had Virtual Server 2005 loaded before any windows updates.

One of the updates broke the search in "Review your update history'.  If you type 'k' in "Search the current view' it gives you a link to the keyboard icon in the control panel.  Totally useless.  There's a billion KB's listed and you have to carefully read through each one ... but it works correctly in the uninstall updates page.

I can confirm removal of KB972036 gets rid of the error message in this thread.

    3 fixes:
    1) Remove KB972036 to get SP2 to load
    2) Remove KB973879 to make the system stable (already pulled from MS Update).
    3) Download SP2 from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd767623.aspx if it doesn't show up on 'check for updates'.

    Thanks!

I'm having the same problems.  I had automatic updates, but now it is off.

I did an update (I guess this was for SP2) and got the blue screen.
I restored to 8/23/09, and it worked fine.
So, I did another update. Again, I got the blue screen.
So, I did another restore to 8/23/09, and it worked fine.
From reading here, it is the update that is the problem.
I've copied/pasted the solutions outlined here, but for now I have automatic updates off.
If I can, I'm going to wait for Microsoft to put out a fix.
If I get real brave this weekend, and bored, I'll try one of the fixes mentioned here.

    I'm using a Inspiron 1545, Vista 64 bit.

This worked... I uninstalled KB9720236 (because KB973879 was nowhere to be found on installed updates) and voila, it worked. I clicked installed SP 2 and the installation was a success!!! No more error message saying there are one or more drivers might be incompatible - MSDSM

    Hi Kevin,

Removing KB972036 from my Server 2008 x64 seems to have done the trick. The first restart after the SP 2 installation took an awfully long time to complete with a black screen for quite a while and then it restarted again which also took a long time with another black screen for quite a while.

    Real anxiety attack stuff!!

Perhaps future SPs can check for this type of issue and report it with a meaningful message to avoid this type of stress? Views of this thread @now: 8,346 - that gives you an indication of how many other people are also experiencing this issue.

Thank you very much for your efforts.

Kevin, thanks for the advice. I uninstalled KB972036 and KB973879. After that service pack 2 installed with no problems.  I installed the Service Pack from Microsoft Download Site instead of the Update site because after 2 failed tries it was not showing as available in Windows Update. The only thing that is wrong now is the Service Pack 2 update does not appear in the Windows Update update history list.  It does appear in the Installed updates list though. I hope Microsoft will recognize that my computer has the Service Pack 2 update when it checks my computer for future updates.

My PC was working just as I wished it to.
After switching it on this morning, Windows Update popped up to tell me there was an update required - SP2.

Then, in common  with all these people, I was told that a particular driver might be incompatible with SP2, etc. etc.

Then I read all these stories about problems with SP2, and the workaround, fix, however you choose to call or describe it.
I'm not appalled that there are problems with SP2.  Don't get me wrong.
In all the years I have used MS products since CPM-86 was "supplanted", Microsoft has shown them to be so reliably buggy and half-assed that poor quality has become a trademark.  Sure, I've worked around the little foibles, the petty idiosyncrasies, to suit myself and the way I work.  And, for my sins, I still use MS products.
No, what I resent is that now, we all can see an abysmal failure in what I regard as simple software project management, passed on to the victims to help resolve.
To fix this, we must uninstall this, restore that, disable the other, reboot using another, etc. etc. And then "let (MS) know if any of this helps"!!!!

It is not the customers who should be jumping through hoops to fix this.  It's not our fault.
And it's not the fault of the poor schmuck who has to field all the customers problems on the forum.
    Nope.
It's MS software teams who should be jumping through hoops to fix this.
Until it's fixed - maybe with SP3 or 4 or who knows - I recommend you do not install SP2.
Nobody's PC needs to be compromised by shoddy workmanship.
Don't attempt to fix those things that are not broken.

Well said, I couldnt agree more. I too am having the same problems. I refuse to waste my time and put myself through the trouble for something that may or may not even work. I also can say that I am not surprised that Microsoft put out such a pathetic update.

You might be right on that. I was having the same problems over the course of the last couple weeks. At first i thought it might have been due to my duel-monitor set up that I had going with Ultra-mon.

I have hidden that up-date and I will see where it goes from there.

    Hello Kevin

I am new to this site but have been a Windows user for many many years

I had the same BSOD during reboot after the three VISTA X64 updates were installed on a brand new HP laptop.  I was able to get back to a resore point before the updates were installed and the computer is now working fine.

My question is  - In the Update history it indicates that two of those three updates 972036 and 970653 were actually successful and 973879 failed on Aug 26 however  on the installed updates page none of them are there

Is it safe to say these updates are not on my current operating version of VISTA given that the retore point was before the three updates  Interestingly 970653 is still waiting to be installed in available updates

Do you recommend skipping any more X64 updates and going right to sp2 or can I install the 970653

    Hey Valmarc,

Thanks for your feedback.  I am confident that after your system restore that the updates are no longer on the computer.

One sure fire way of testing is to see if you still have the symptoms, if not I wouldn't worry too much about it.

As for the question about skipping updates and going right to SP2 I would actually recommend installing SP2 immediately, then going to windows update and installing any updates that are available.

What happens sometimes is that SP2 will have a bunch of "cumulative updates" which basically means all the updates in the past 6-12 months (guesstimate) are rolled up into SP2.  So, from a time management perspective the most efficient way to install ALL updates is the install the service pack as soon as possible then just let Windows Update do the rest.  This prevents you from spending time updating through Windows Update, then spending even more time downloading SP2 which 60-80% of it you already have installed through the last check of Windows Update.

For example whenever I reformat/reinstall Windows, the first thing I install (even before checking Windows Update) is the service pack 2 for Vista.  Once I have downloaded and installed that, it makes a 2 hour update session from a default/clean windows installation into a 10 minute update since I already have most of the new updates from installing SP2.

A little long winded but I hope you understand :)

    Kevin,
I have been reading all the post regarding the "driver or drivers" may not be compatible when downloading the Service Pack #2
I've had my laptop less than 2 weeks and still trying to learn Vista- I loved XP but new computers are already downloaded with Vista.
Today, was the first time I really had time to use my new Acer 6530 computer.  When I logged on there were updates that needed to be downloaded.  Everything loaded but the Service Pack #2.  I also received the not compatible driver message and when solutions button was clicked there were none.
As suggested, I went into the Program and Features , Installed updates section but did not see "KB973879" listed.  The last time anything was downloaded was on 8/16 when I brought my laptop home and some recommended downloads this afternoon.

I did not download anything on the 26th, and "KB973879" is not listed.  "KB972036" is listed but it was installed this afternoon 8-28.  Should I try and uninstall "KB972036" ?  Is there anything else I should do- I am NOT computer savvy so please try and keep it simple.

    Thanks for you help

I'm also happy to confurm that uninstalling KB972036 did the trick for me.

Before this I've tried to install KB967752 with no luck. The KB article states this update is applicable for Server SKUs only, but I was able to intall it on Vista without any problem. Though, it did not solve the SP2 installation issue.

I also tried to uninstall KB973879 but found it had been never installed on my PC :)

But KB972036 is exactly the cause for me.

Thanks Kevin for keeping track on this thread.

Please note that this issue and appropriate workaround has already been documented at Microsoft Knowledge Base article for update 972036 "August 2009 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update".

    See "Issue 2":
    Symptoms

If you have applied the August 2009 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update, and you then try to install Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista, you may receive the following error message:

    On Windows Vista

One or more drivers may be incompatible. The driver listed below might be incompatible with Vista Service Pack 2. Check to see if a solution is available, and then restart the installation after the problem is resolved. MSDSM – Please read Microsoft Knowledge Base article 967752

If you click Ignore and Continue, you may receive the following error message:
Installing Windows Vista Service Pack 2 might cause some drivers to stop working correctly. Are you sure you want to continue?

    Workaround for Windows Vista

If you receive this error on a Windows Vista-based computer, click Ignore and Continue, and then continue the Windows Vista SP2 Setup. If you still receive an error during SP2 Setup, uninstall the August 2009 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update, and then install Windows Vista Service Pack 2. To uninstall the August 2009 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Click Uninstall a program under the Programs section.
    3. In the Tasks list in the left navigation area, click View installed updates.
    4. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB972036), and then click Uninstall.
    5. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the uninstallation.

Note If you are prompted for confirmation or for the administrator password, click Yes to confirm, or type the administrator password.
    6. Restart the system when you are prompted.

Brand new Dell on Vista x64, worked OK, until the updates got installed, then kept getting BSOD for just about anything, SP2 kept failing to install. Saw about taking out  KB972036 and KB973879. Could only find KB972036, so tried SP2 again, still failed, then noticed KB973879 was now showing as installed. Told it to uninstall, that took about 20 minutes to complete. Then tried SP2, installed with no problem, no outstanding patches now show, and all the BSODs have gone. Thanks for the pointers

I just got a new Dell Studio XPS 435MT with Vista home premium.  I began setting it up on Aug. 25th (the day 972036 update came out according to above).  On Aug. 27th I installed Office Enterprise 2007 and then the updates and reached the update for SP2. I started that update and got the same error message of MSDSM driver may be incompatible with vista and to see kb 967752.  I canceled the SP2 installation and uninstalled the 972036 as per microsofts instructions and then continued to load SP2 which seemed to be no problem. I left it on overnight (past the 3am automatic MS update check) and found the computer unresponsive in the morning. I hard powered down and when it rebooted it tryed to fix whatever was wrong... ending up with SP2 still listed in updates.

My Solution was to go back to the very first System Restore point (which was on Aug. 25th) and start all over again but this time to watch for the dreaded 972036 which I never saw in the update list again (MS must have removed it after all the problems). I just kept updating and reached SP2 and that updated without problems. I continued loading Office 2007 and those updates and still no problems.

I've been reading these posts and they've been very helpful.  Thanks to all who have contributed.

This is not the case. I just checked Windows update and it downloaded SP2 and upon installing the same prompt came up about MSDSM being incompatible and the 'check for solutions' link still comes up with nothing. Fortunately because of reading this forum I too will not be installing the update but it is terrible customer service that firstly the bug is still there and the update available and also that they haven't even bothered to provide any information about it when the link is clicked. Microsoft really needs to lift their game and respect the people aho have spent billions of dollars on their less than reliable software.

I had roughly the same issue as everyone else on this thread. I woke up one morning and my 2 month old laptop was in 'System Repair' mode, which has happened on a couple other occasions BTW. However, on this occasion my machine could only boot up in Safe Mode. Once in safe mode, I got in touch with HP online help. They told me to search for the update: KB973879. The most recent update I found was from 8/12. I suppose the 'System Repair' process got rid of it at some point. The HP service person told me to try a "System Restore' to before 8/25. He also suggested that I turn off automatic update until Microsoft deals with this issue. The 'System Restore' did work and now I am running properly, again.

I have used windows for many years and have not had any significant problems until now. When I bought this machine, I thought about going with a Mac. I cannot believe that Microsoft let this happen. Unfortunately, I bought my laptop about 3 weeks before the free upgrade to Windows 7 came into effect. I have thought about making the switch to Linux but will probably just upgrade to Windows 7. I defended Vista for awhile, although it slows my fairly competent CPU (2.5 Ghz Core Duo, 4 gb RAM) to pace of a sloth at times, but now Vista has lost any defense in my mind. I'll jump on the "I wish I would have stayed with XP" bandwagon.

    Hi Patti,

Please go ahead and uninstall KB972036 then reboot, once you are completed the reboot go to Windows Update (Start / Programs / Windows update) and install any updates that are available there (including Service Pack 2 if available) and you should be good to go!

    Hi everyone,

I have some excellent hot news today. Two updates that were released earlier in August and were known for causing the problem discussed here in this thread were fixed and re-released today. If you are going to install them now please make shure that you have downloaded the updated version labeled as "v2". Windows Update service is already powered with the updated packages so you can use it and stop reading here.

For more technical information please read the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.

Please don't mind if this information doesn'n seem very valuable for you. If you are not a technical person it is enough just to install what Windows Update will install for you.

    Have a nice day!

    Kevin,
I'm getting this same BSOD every couple hours (or so). I removed KB 973879 from within SAFE MODE last night and didn't receive the BSOD for the rest of the night. HOwever, when I looked at my computer this morning, Windows Update had reinstalled KB973879. I'm running Windows Vista on a 64bit DELL. I have since removed that update again but am wondering if that update will be reinstalled again tonight. I can turn Windows Update OFF but would prefer not to.

Should I also remove KB972036 (if applicable) and install SP2? (I don't even know if SP2 has been installed yet).

    Thanks,

    Hi jtconti,

If Windows Update reinstalled the update it is likely the v2 version of the update that does not cause the issues mentioned in this thread.

I think that if you uninstalled the updates and Windows Update reinstalled them for you, you are good to go and can start the update to Vista SP2.

The re-release of these patches do not have the same problems as the original versions of the updates.

    Thanks,
