My Vista Home Premium Windows Update isn't working.  When I click on the Windows Update the error I get is "page fail to load."  Don't know what else I can do.  I tried the fix it link I found in one of the forums and that did not fix the problem.  What else can I check to get this fixed.  I am currently at Service Pack 1.

There is a update for windows blinds on impulse just updated and every thing is back to normal
Updating Windows Blinds solved the problem.  Couldn't any info as to what caused it.  Can't remember when I last updated that program, but I know I've updated Defender a lot and this problem appeared right after the last update I did a week ago.  Good to know for the future though.

    Hello, texasgirl

Thank you for using the Answers Forum!

Are you trying to go to the Windows Update webpage at http://update.microsoft.com or does this happen when you open Windows Update from within the Start menu?

If this is from within the Start menu, does this happen when you try to look for updates or does it display this on the Windows Update window?

If this just started recently you can try doing a System Restore. You can do this by first booting into safe mode, then going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, open System Restore and choose a date and time before the problem started.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

    David:

I did attempt to go to the update.microsoft.com web page to try the update from there.  Same error message:  Page failed to load.

    David:

I haven't tried from the Windows Update from the Start Menu.  But I have tried Windows Update from the Control Panel.

We have done a system restore and this didn't fix the problem.

I think the problem may have started after the system restore.  What else can I check?  I can't install service pack 2 update.

I have EXACTLY the same problem, Texas Girl.  Not at all sure what to do.  I think I need an update but can't seem to get it without the PC looking for the Windows Update from the Control panel.  Any ideas, David?  Anyone?

    Irvine1965:

I have not received or figured out a fix for this.  It looks like I am going to have to reinstall vista and bring it up to date in order to get around this problem.

Vista Home Premium "Update Windows" link will not update due to error.  Error message:  Page failed to load.  I am only at Service Pack 1.  Can't get Service Pack 2 installed.

I did attempt to go to the update.microsoft.com web page to try the update from there.  Same error message:  Page failed to load.

I have tried Windows Update from Control Panel.  Same error message : Page failed to load.

We have done a system restore and this didn't fix the problem.  I have used the "fix link" and problem still isn't resolved.  Can Microsoft please look into this.

Is the only fix possible is to do a clean install?  This does not seem reasonable.  Is there a registry edit that I can check out?

    Thanks.

    Hi texasgirl,

Did you make any software or hardware changes to the computer?
Check if you can browser other website including Microsoft websites?

1-Please optimize your Internet Explorer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936213

2- Steps to add Microsoft website to Trusted Site:

    a. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    b. On the Security tab, click the Trusted Sites icon.
    c. Click Sites and under add this website to the zone, copy and paste these website addresses.
You can only add one address at a time and you must click Add after each one:
    * http://*.update.microsoft.com
    * https://*.update.microsoft.com
    * http://download.windowsupdate.com
Note: The asterisks and different addresses allow your computer to work with the site, no matter how you try to access it from your computer or the Web.

    3. Disable your anti-virus application or third-party firewall for some time.

    4. Open Command Prompt in Elevated mode; try to re-register jscript.dll and vbscript.dll using the command regsvr32 jscript.dll and regsvr32 vbscript.dll. Exit the command prompt and restart the computer. Check if you can install the updates now using windows update.
If issue still exists, click on start, type “windowsupdate.log” in the start search box. Click OK. You will find some information, copy and post the log details.

Let me know if you need any further help.

Please help, I am also getting this problem, I have ran through your solutions here and there still seems to be no fix.  I get the "page failed to load' when trying to run the Windows Update from with IE7, IE8, The Windows update icon in the tray, as well as trying to run windows update from the control panel and the Windows Security Center.

I can change the Automatic Update from within the Windows Security Center, but I get the "page failed to load" if I click on the Turn automatic updateing on or off from within the Control panel.  I loaded the .net 1.1 and the SP1 for .net 1.1, but I think the update still worked after that.  The last think I remember doing is telling Windows update not do download or show IE8 in the "update list"   (well as you can see I did download it to see if that would fix it and it didn't)

    any suggestions you can add?
    Thanx much

Same problem, I am running Vista Ultimate x64... this just started after the last update... I followed all the steps that Swathi B suggested... including turning off my anti-virus and the Microsoft Firewall that I use.... still no luck. I restarted... it said it was configuring updates... I guess it from a previous update... So it finished, I logged on, windows update still says "page not loaded"...

I never updated to IE8... you guys didn't put a dependency on IE 8 into Windows Update did you? Nah... you guys are smarter than that... right?

Please help... this is new since the last update last week... nothing else has changed on the box, no new software installed.

My next step is to run system restore to roll back the last few updates... but you know... as a software developer for over 20 years... I think security updates are important and if I roll back window's updates I'm not sure that I will still be able to move forward with future security updates.

I can't post my windowsupdate.log because even the past 2 days logs are too big to post on this forum...

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM-- and I know it's because I told Windows Update to ignore updates for IE8.  I deduced this connection because the problem happened exactly at the same time on two totally different computers-- one a work desktop, the other a home laptop.  They both are Vista Ultimate 32 systems, but otherwise share very little in common... EXCEPT that I told them to both ignore the IE8 update requests two nights ago, and ever since then, BOTH computers mysteriously show "Page failed to load" errors on Windows update.  I've tried EVERYTHING-- re-registering dlls, using Microsoft's FixIt to reset Update, starting and stopping the update service, using sfc.exe, changing Internet Options security settings, etc. etc. etc.  Nothing fixed the problem.

MICROSOFT: you introduced a critical, OS-breaking bug into Windows Update and those of us who told Windows Update to Ignore IE8 Updates cannot run Windows Update at all now!  Please develop a patch before our systems get assaulted by Windows exploits... thank you!

    Thanks.

PS: System Restore does NOT fix this problem-- I restored to several days, then several weeks ago-- no change, Windows Update still shows a blank page with the "Page failed to load" error.  Also, changing default browsers does not fix the problem either.

Same thing happened to me this weekend.  Windows update shows "the page failed to load" on both my laptop running Home Premium and desktop running Ultimate yesterday after
being prompted that Defender update was available.  The last update both machines did was a Defender update earlier that day or the previous day.  System restore doesn't help.  Restoring from a backup previous to the first update solves the problem.  Is the Defender update causing this?  Anyone else?

It would be nice if someone from Microsoft could post to indicate that they are aware of this problem.  I also confirm that my update logs show that Windows Update did a defender update just before the problem began, so it's either turning off IE8 updates, or the Defender update, that is causing the problem.

Windows Update page failed to load.  This is frustrating..

The exact same thing has happened to me as well.  I remember doing the last Defender update about a week ago, and now NOTHING.....
Microsoft must be aware of the problem, but then again, with Windows 7 looming, problems with Vista Home premium gets pushed back as not as important.  At lest that is the impression I am getting by the lack of a timely resolution to the problem.

This thread is still open http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/8e6340e2-74b7-4950-a467-b9a3f02a0769?prof=required

It was marked as "answered" by Swathi B but his "answer" was not really an answer. There are lots of people continuing to report this problem on that thread. Please can somebody from MS look at the further information posted on the thread about this problem (that is, please look at the posts after Swathi's non-answer) and let us at least know if somebody is looking into this problem?

    Thank you,

Yes, I also found that the FixIt app did NOT fix this problem.  Clearly it's a new, widespread problem that is probably providing Apple with new advertisement ideas every hour :)

I was able to restore both my machines from backup (system restore doesn't fix it) to a point just before the update.  I've had a defender update waiting in Windows Update since then, but the version # has changed over the past couple days.  It's Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.67.379.0) now, but it was different two days ago.  Not sure if this is a fixed update or not.  Will test when I have time, not really wanting to do a restore again.  Be nice if there was an official comment.

i have had this problem since the weekend myself, the only way i have managed to continue getting updates is to create a new user account to run along side my general use one with admin access. This will allow me to update windows normally within the new account.

at the current time i havent checked if any updates i have installed resolved my current useraccount situation as it hasnt been restarted in a week or two. dont know if this will help anyone else but it will do for me for now.

Ok so I bit the bullet and installed IE8... however this did not fix the problem with Windows Update. I still get the "page failed to load" error when I try to open Windows Update on my machine. So an IE8 dependency does not appear to be the problem. For grins I also turned off Windows Defender, and I still get the same result...

Don't know what that means... other than some update that got downloaded trashed Windows Update functinoality on my machine. Gee I wish Microsoft would support us here.

Since I can't post sigificant portions of windowsupdate.log... I went through it looking for suspicious errors... here are some of the things I found....

I was gonna do some more delving today, when IE 7 gave me an error, caused by Stardock Windowsblinds. Disabled Stardock WindowsBlinds thru my msconfig, restarted machine and tried update....Worked!

Jaydub5866, I tried what you said about disabling Stardock Windowsblinds and it works like a charm.  I wonder why all of a sudden though there is a problem with it?

Same here - turn off Windowblinds and all is well.  I haven't updated WB lately... some service pack or other download from Microsoft must have hosed it.

Yep this is it... I haven't updated window blinds in a long time... so its a Windows Update install that changed to screw things up. It kinda sucks that I have to disable it everytime I want to run Windows Update now... but at least there is a workaround.

I think I'll lobby Stardock to get a fix in on thier side... I think we'll have a better chance of getting it fixed by them, rather than the apparent absent MS support staff on this thread.

    Thanks!

Updating Windows Blinds solved the problem.  Couldn't any info as to what caused it.  Can't remember when I last updated that program, but I know I've updated Defender a lot and this problem appeared right after the last update I did a week ago.  Good to know for the future though.

I was experiencing the same issue of not being able to run Windows Update on my Vista 64 system.  I do no have WindowBlinds on my system, but I was running the latest free version of Stardock's MyColors application (same vendor).  After poking around a little, I decided to revert back to the standard Aero desktop theme configuration from their "Diamond" theme.  I did not have to uninstall their application.  Now Windows Update is working again.

Noticed this same problem today when I got the "updates available" notice.  (I do not let Windows do auto updates, I let it tell me when they are available and do them manually).  I am running Vista x64 on my laptop.  After a search, fouund a link here.  I do not have WindowsBlinds installed, but as another poster, I do have MyColors installed and after reverting back to the Aero theme, the problem went away.  Not sure who to blame here, whether it be Stardock or Microsoft something they did is causing a problem.  At least it's not a virus/worm/trojan type problem.  I havent noticed this error on my desktop at home (running Windows 7 x64), but I'll check when I get home from work.  Unfortunately although Stardock states that MyColors is compatible with Windows 7, I have yet to get it to work without errors, so I do not have MyColors running on my desktop, but I do have other Stardock software running.

Ok, so this is what I've found, I noticed people mentioning stuff about myColors and Stardock and it made me think, I use a different theme than the Windows Aero theme, I have an Alienware laptop and they have a program called AlienGUIse which is associated with Stardock which I didn't realize. I switched over to the Windows Aero Theme and it then allowed me to open up the Windows Update program, but once I switched back to my Alienware Invader theme I could no longer access Windows Update, so this probably isn't a fix for all of you but those of you that are using a different theme than the Windows Aero theme, maybe try switching back and see if it works that way. Hope this helps.

I tested his hypothesis and can confirm that switching the MyColor theme back to Microsoft's default Aero theme Does fix the issue of not being able to run windows update. Hopefully Microsoft or Stardock will release a fix to this inconvenient issue.

    Hello,

This is a known issue with the MyColors program. Our developers are working on a fix, and an update will be released through Impulse soon. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I just installed an update on 10/20, it was an update that enables you to download other newer updates. I know this is the "bad update" because I did a sytem restore and my windowsd update worked fine, but when it went to download this important update when my laptop booted back up I recieved the same "This page failed to load" when I opened up Windows Update.

The problem is that this update is required in oreder for me to get newer updates, so i can't just uninstall it. So...what the heck do I do?!?! I can easily restore my PC, but I still won't get newer updates unless I install that one update which is not working properly. It's like a catch-22. Screwed if I do and screwed if I don't.

Any ideas about how to fix this stupid problem.

My laptop is not prone to hardware failures or anything. I own an Alienware m17 (not m17x) 2.8Gz dual core with 2xAti Radeon 3870 HD's (1gb VMemory) and a Raid 0 Hard drive@ 7200Rpm.
So you can see, having problems is not something I am used to. But Vista is plain and simple... horrible! XP never had these kinds of OS problems.

When I got windows update.com it just brings up the windows update! Its the same as opening it up yourself from the control panel! What a useless idea.

Isn't there some way to manually download and install updates WITHOUT worthless Windows Update, or must we all use windows update to get the updates we need to make horrid Vista work!?

    no that is stupid advice.

what about people at colleges who cannot go online due to college security measures...I cant go online with my laptop sonce windows update isn't functioning.

This may seem like a les simportant issue, but I;d like to be able to USE my laptop once and a while to go online while I am at school for 5/6 of the year.

system restore fixed it for me BUT Windows Update must install this update in order to install newer updates. So I'm stuck at a catch-22. I need the update to get newer updates, yet it won't let me run Windows Update!! HOW REDICULOUS!

WindowsBlinds is a third party "skinning" program by Stardock.  You either have that installed or possibly MyColors, by Stardock also.  From what I see some computer manufactures are including that with the system.  There is an update for WindowsBlinds that fixes it, but I believe they are still working on the fix for MyColors a indicated in Stickyshocker's post above.  More info can be had here  http://www.stardock.com/products/

Windows Blinds, Stardock themes, MyColors and any AlienGuise theme sets for changing Windows' themes can all cause Windows update to stop working. Simply switch back to regular windows theme and it will work again. For me, I can sim ply switch back and forth, but if you cannot switch at will then you will need to uninstall any of the above theme manager programs.

You have to have Impulse installed http://www.impulsedriven.com/  The update will show up in Updates.

Here is a direct link to get Stardock (Window Blinds, etc) updates.  Once you enter your email you use for that account Stardock will email you the info needed to update.

Is it possible you have MyColors installed, or preinstalled by the computer maker.  Dell is doing this I believe.  MyColors (also by Stardock) is causing this issue too.

Stardock have fixed this problem, rather than uninstalling MyColors you can simply update to the latest version to resume normal service.

Hmm that's strange, I updated mine through Impulse but it should update through Mycolors too. Try uninstalling Mycolors, redownloading it and then reinstalling it if all else fails.

Rmasse3  - I don't think Bill Gates has much to do with MyColors, a software program developed by Stardock Software :)

I have had the same problem - since the beginning of Dec.  Running XP home version.  DO NOT have Windowsblind or any of the other programs mentioned.  Still unable to install updates despite following detailed advice - changing and re installing Automatic Update, shutting off my Symantec  security, etc, AND attempting to restore the system to an earlier date - not one date that I chose worked!  At my wit's end.  I'm not a techie  and this continued failure is simply intolerable.  Can't SOMEBODY help?

I just realized that I have been using an Optimizer program which automatically deletes some of my settings.  This is a part of the "slimming down" process to speed up my internet interface speed.  That has been great - BUT one of the things that I didn't realize was that the "Trusted Sites" list was also cleaned!  This will prohibit the updates from happening AND if you are using an off-site back-up program, you will have to put the site in the trusted list as well.

Everyone, texasgirl here.  I do not have Windows Blind, or any of the other products mentioned.   I did find a fix.  Why the MS guru's monitoring this forum couldn't provide a little assistance in pointing us to their own web page to follow some troubleshooting steps, I don't know.  This Microsoft Forum has let us end users all down in my opinion.  Why have these Forums if the experts can give us some friendly guidance.

First go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366 this link and try a stand alone SP2 update.  This will at least give an error message other than "Page failed to load."  Then attempt step 2, see if the System Readiness Tool will help (this one was a little trickier, seemed like it was stalling and not doing anything the first couple of tries, I had to reboot my pc before attempting a third time and clicking on the installation bar to get it to show progress, and it takes 30 minutes for 1  of 1 update to install).  This did not fix my problem.  But with the error message returned in step 1 we were able to use a non-manufacturer's operating system installation disk using our product key to run setup, then select upgrade to fix the problem.  If you attempt to use your operating system disk that comes with pc this may not allow you to select the upgrade option, mine didn't.  Before you start make sure you have your product key and ensure you do not select install, this probably will wipe out all of your personal files.  This brought my "Windows Update" back to life without having to re-format my hard drive and re-install operating system and drivers and other software (which in my opinion would have been a bigger headache).  I still have some minor "bugs" in my settings to figure out, but I am now able to update all of my microsoft software again, like Windows Media Player.  This one bug kind of broke all Microsoft products on my pc.  Real bummer.

    Good Luck!

For me it was nVidia firewall blocking the page.Turning it off solved the problem at once.
