I proceeded with the installation of this update witch was the SP2 final Release. but after booting up and going through the 3 step of the process it said it completed 100% and at that point stood there with a revolving circle (small icon) and at the end it came out saying: Service pack did not install, Reverting Changes, Do not turn off your computer. (Das Service Pack wurde nicht Installiert. Änderungen werden rückgängig gemacht. Schalten Sie den Computer nicht aus.)

Moshe -Try searching for the first instance of "0x80004005" or "Failure will not be ignored" etc.. Try to figure out what is is stumbling on in the cbs.log. At this point in my case, I am pretty sure restoring bootsect for Vista will let me install (e.g. removing grub/restoring boot record vista style/installing sp2/reinstalling grub.) (fingers crossed.)

One of my reasons for wanting this was the fix for Explorer in which you keep getting the "View " reset to whatever it decides it likes best (which can vary I have noticed, day to day.) SP2 is suppose to address this bug (I think it's a BagMRU setting for shell in registry?) as well as other annoyances.
    -
    Edit:
RE: "BagMRU Issue". Which I might add was not resolved. I have about 1 TB of files/folders on this machine. Needless to say that creates many folder/dir views Vista needs to remember. I knew right away this issue with it remembering VIEW settings on folders was not fixed. Microsoft has even left the incorrect registry items in place after SP2 "upgrade". Detailed here and how to fix: http://thewinforums.com/topic/23106-resolvedremember-folder-settings-finally-works/ This fix worked for a time, but now Vista is up to it's old tricks. Very annoying.

I also face the problem and after I goole this problem I found it maybe many possible cause . Thanks to Brady Shea 's reminding, I check my boot manager and found it really has problem. Now I fix it and installed it. Aha, congratulations~~~~
If your type "bcdedit" in command prompt and it says "the boot configuration data store could not be opened. the system can not  find the file specified.", you should use the vista install CD repair the startup. If it says not dectects any problem about startup, you should delete c:\boot directory then repair again.
I'm not sure everyone has the same cause. Here are some valuable resources, if you still can't solve it you should look and have a test.

    Good luck!
    LAST EDIT!   (RESOLVED):
Just got back up. Restored Vista boot using * bootrec (backed up BCD anyway). Rebooted into Vista using it's mbr/bootmgr. Installed SP2 (what a difference in time!) Worked like a charm.

    * RESOLVED - Use Bootrec.exe /fixmbr and /fixboot to 'disable' GRUB  (see below for link).

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So main question is: Is it working now?
Think I also used a Linux utility to do this in the past, also, when I didn't have a DVD with me. (restored vista backup boot)

To add some more info for those who have non-Vista "boot manager" installed, or corruption - this will restore Vista's (if you have DVD handy):
Bootrec/bcdedit use: How to use Bootrec.exe in the Windows Recovery Environment...
^ Make sure you do the backup portion of this as you can easily really goof things up. (e.g. "bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup ", etc)

    Edit:
Forgot about free (not Open Source, though) EasyBCD: EasyBCD 1.7.2
Haven't used personally but I know a couple ppl who have used this with success.

    Hi TrueRock,
Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers forum.
As one of the troubleshooting steps i would recommed to try to install the SP1 Update as a stand alone following these steps.

Resolution 1: Install the stand-alone package for the service pack instead of using Windows Update to install the Service Pack

Note If you already tried to install the stand-alone package for the service pack, and you encountered this problem, skip this resolution and go to Resolution 2.

If you are unsure if you tried to install the stand-alone package for the service pack, we recommend that you try the following steps to install the stand-alone package for the service pack. By using the stand-alone package to install the service pack, you eliminate installation issues that might be related to Windows Update. This simplifies the troubleshooting process.

How to obtain the stand-alone package for the service pack

To obtain the service pack, see the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as appropriate for your operating system, and then look for the option to install the service pack from the Microsoft Download Center.

935791  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791/ ) How to obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack
968849  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968849/ ) How to obtain the latest service pack for Windows Server 2008

Resolution 2: Run the System Update Readiness Tool

The System Update Readiness Tool checks your computer and tries to resolve certain conditions that could interfere with the installation of updates or other software. However, before you download the tool, you have to determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version of the Windows Vista operating system. If your computer has Windows Vista installed, and you know which version that you are running, go to the "How to download the System Update Readiness Tool" section. If you are unsure about which version your computer has installed, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start
      Collapse this imageExpand this image
      Start button
      .
    2. In the Start Search box, type system, and then click System in the Programs list.

The operating system is displayed as follows:

    • For a 32-bit version operating system, 32-bit Operating System appears for the system type under System.
    • For a 64-bit version operating system, 64-bit Operating System appears for the system type under System.

After you determine which version of Windows Vista your computer is running, download the System Update Readiness Tool.

How to download the System Update Readiness Tool

You can download the System Update Readiness Tool from the following Microsoft Download Center Web site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads)

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

This is a joke. Sitting here waiting for the "changes to revert." Think I am going to skip this SP, since I could care less about Blu-Ray burning and I have all the updates I need. MS really makes life aggravating. So to get SP2 to install, you have to reinstall SP1 (mine already has S1, factory installed by HP). A complete joke. I like the PC, but no such hassles with my daughter's MacBook or my XP Netbook.

Oh, my changes have reverted, so no longer interested in SP2. That's for sure. I'll wait for my next PC with Windows 7.

    Hello Martin,
Is this the solution to a problem installing Vista SP1, or Vista SP2

I am having a bit of the same problem.  I have a Dell 9200 with a quad processor and a Dell partitioned hard drive.  I formatted the recovery drive that was installed by Dell.  I used it to install Windows 7 RC, and it works well.  But now I have a multiple boot system with the default set for windows vista home premium 32 bit.

Months ago I installed the SP1 update, standalone I believe.  But now I am trying to install the Vista SP2 update like benemili above.  I have tried all of the suggestions from MS support, like installing the System Update readiness tool, and then trying to install the standalone SP2 update.  I still get the same message as above, "Service pack did not install, Reverting Changes, Do not turn off your computer".  It reverts to just before the installation.  However my error code is 80070002.

More info about my computer.  I have AVG free installed, and even though I disable it in Windows Defender, it still loads during startup.  I have to, then go and turn it off manually with the Task Manager.  I am wondering if I have to uninstall it totally for it not to load, even though Defender has supposedly disabled it.

While trying to solve this issue, I also found this article from softpedia.  I am wondering if it is relavent to this situation as well?

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Vista-SP2-Fails-to-Install-on-PCs-with-Cloned-Disks-or-Partitions-111761.shtml

Another idea.  Do I have to uninstall Windows 7 RC in order to go back to a simple boot up?  If I go back to a simple ONE OS boot computer,by formatting the Windows 7 partition, will the Vista SP2 update then install on my system?

Another note about partitions.  I also have a very small partition from Dell on the harddrive that is called "healthy EIDS".
I have no idea if it is relevant, but I can not do anything to it.  The MS disk management tool does not allow me to do anything about this small partition, 39 MB.  It looks like it is right at the beginning of the harddrive.

By the way, I uninstalled all of the Dell support software ages ago, as well as reinstalling Vista home premium from scratch from the Windows CD that came with the computer.  I did use the original drivers for hardware from Dell though, but several have been updated with time from the OEMs of the hardware, not Dell.  I have been diligent about keeping Vista up to date with Microsoft Update since then, but have now for the first time run into a big snag with this Vista SP2.

    Hello Martin,
My last post was directed to TrueRock, concerning his problem.

No, you dont have to remove Win 7.
If you already have SP1 installed, install SP2. There is no need to do anything to SP1 if its properly installed.
If you dont want AVG to run on your computer it is safe to uninstall completelly.
To resolve your problem, remove the download directory, and then visit the update locations again. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
      2. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop.
      3. Minimize the Services snap-in.
    2. Rename the SoftwareDistribution directory. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
      2. Type cd %windir%, and then press ENTER.
      3. Type ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press ENTER
      4. Type exit, and then press ENTER .

Note When you remove the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder, the history list is erased from the "Review your Updates" section of the Windows Update Web site. This action will not affect the currently installed updates on your computer. Subsequent updates will appear in the history list.
    3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Maximize the Services snap-in.
      2. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start.
      3. Close the Services snap-in window.
    4. Visit the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or the WSUS server again, and then download an update.
    5. If you still receive the same errors, verify that you have correctly performed steps 1 through 3.
    6. If you still cannot install the update, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Thanks to the all of the post above. I will delay installing Vista SP2. Apparently it's more of a problem than a solution. When it gave warning that it may cause problems to your sound system I got nervous.

The above answer to "delay" in installing the said SP is the best solution I think!

I really won't recommend to the average users to mess up changing his services, Martin, that is maybe a temporary solution, but I won't place that on this user forum and recommend it!
Stay out of your sevices snap-in you all, that's kind of tricky!

Just wait until things settle down with installing this service pack. The error might be in the by MS supplied installer cabinet itself or the Windows Installer needs an update!

    Hi Martin,

now I´m spend some hours more, to try the Solution 1 and Solution 2.

Both will ends with same result as before. The update going through the 3 step of the process it said it completed 100% and at that point stood there with a revolving circle (small icon) and at the end it came out saying: Service pack did not install, Reverting Changes, Do not turn off your computer.

My Notebook was factory installed by Dell, I allways install all updates, no special programs only Office 2007.

    What can I do ?

    Benemili,

take my advise and give up on it for now. Don't dig into your services and don't disable things there.

Just have patience till things settle down and wait for the official SP2 release on the Microsoft.com homepage.

    No hurry SP1 is safe.....

    Hello Benemili

we have the same problems with our Dell laptops lattitude D820. No problems on the PC's in our company. Disabled everything posible and tried all the solutions mentioned above in this thread. The only solution for now was to hide the update, so you don't have to wait foor the changes to revert. So let's wait for a new version of SP2.

There is no official announcment of an SP2 yet on the Microsoft Homepage, there is only the link to downloading SP1. And watch out for unofficial downloads on third party sites.

I think you shoudn't walk in front of things that aren't there yet as ready.
The need for installing a new SP isn't that high at the moment. Just have patience and monitor your automatic updates.

I view this thread as unneccesarry you don't complain to the butcher about meat that is yet to come. Better this thread is closed.

    Ok Matthias,

you're right in that link. But that is to MSDN folks first, I don't see it on the Homepage offered to the general public yet.

However it is bad what happens I agree on it. The cabinet files seem corrupt to me. Microsoft should just check the files for download and fix the cab installer.

But anything mentionable in your Event Log viewer? Messages about why the installer gives up?

What's the worthwile thing for you to make the decision to get SP2 immediatly at release, any significant improvements announced yet then? The usual thing is just wait some days and hear from others if it's worth the trouble.

    Lory

    Hi,

it is either a security issue:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329936/en-us

    or try this:

    http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1127102.htm

It is a general, common Vista error something to do with security permissions. I recommend turning your antivirus scanners and such completely off during the SP install.

Is there some pre-installed antivirus software bundled with these Dell laptops you guys have?

    Regards,
    Lory

I'll try (deactivating McAfee Internet Security 2009) and report back later (and apologize to MS folks if needed).

    Thank you for the suggestion.

    Hi,

Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, fully patched.
Getting the exact same error (E_FAIL - 0x80004005).

My system is as clean as possible, no anti-virus/spyware installed during the update process (running from the stand-alone installer).

I did clone my partition when I upgraded my hard disk, but before installing, I've run the Windows Recovery tool from the Vista DVD and using the command prompt I've run:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot

(this should ensure that my partition is "VISTA Valid")

    I also tried the following:
    1. Disconnected my secondary drives (power and SATA cable).
    2. I've run the vista system readiness tool (the version released april 2009 for vista).
    3. Uninstalled every application I can think of that might have a system-level driver installed.

The only thing I didn't try (and I don't plan on doing it) is to do a clean system install.  I'd rather just wait for Windows 7.

    P.S.
LoryHolland, the "http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1127102.htm" post refers to something completely unrelated.  The "80004005" E_FAIL error-code is a generic error code used by practically every module in windows, it's not specific to this issue.  This means you'll find a lot of unrelated references to this code around the internet.

    Hi,

see wether your NTFS permissions on the HDD are OK.
Can be messed up by the system following the cloning. Should be "Full control" over the disk where Vista is installed and full control levels over the Vista SP2 installer.

Are you being prompted for your adminstrator consent in the first place when opening the installer??

Sorry, I can't simulate it here, my OS language isn't supported yet in the Five language installer and I'm running Windows7RC now mainly but you have my compasion......

    Hi Lory,
Where do you check the NTFS permission for the hard drive and full control levels over the installer?

I have UAC disabled, running as Admin, so there won't be any admin consent prompts showing up.

    For the NTFS drive: rightclick the HDD in My Computer, choose properties, and then the Tab Security;

for the installer, rightclick it, properties, security.

for the HDD: rightclick the HDD in My Computer, properties, Tab Security.

for the installer: rightclick the downloaded installer, properties, tab Security.

For extra effect, reboot afterwards, see if the permissions are then as needed before giving it a new try.

OK, for this situation the Tool did not address the issue.  But, does running the Tool have any practical use.  I have never run the Tool.  The name seems to suggests it's a useful Tool.  Maybe not?  The Tool must have some practical use or why even have the Tool.  Might I create a problem just running the Tool.  Any issues just running the Tool as proactive maintenance periodically or prior to a major Update like SP2 or IE8.

    Lory,

I get the "unknown error" code as well, but I found that SP2 is conflicting with my anti virus protection.  My virus protection (Webroot) warns of these potential threats from SP2 installation:

    Mal/Badsrc-B
    Mal/EncJS-A
    Mal/MDrop-Gen

I did not find much information on these threats (no information provided from Webroot at all, just acknowledge of risk) and I am unsure what to do.  Is it worth the risk to turn off my protection, as it is an authentic Windows Update?

    Dan

    Hello Dan,

yes, it is authentic. What I suggest you can do, since it seems this error is quite undiagnosed yet at Microsoft itself:

uninstall your antivirus software before applying SP2
Install SP2 and see if it goes without errors
re-install the antivirus software when the update has finished.

This will prevent your antivirus software from giving these errors and blocking installation.

    Kind regards
    Lory

    Hi Bjm,

such a tool is usefull when a user doesn't know what is there on the system and what third party things can possibly cause conflicts.

In this case, with Updates supplied by Microsoft itself, I see personally no salvation in running the mentioned tool.  Only when you don't have ideas where to look in your system for the requirements for an update, then the tool is recommended.

But in this threads case the tool bypasses the error so to these guys it is of no use in that way.
But it's good thinking your contribution....

    Kind regards,
    Lory

    @Moshe,
Did repairing the boot sector/partition fix the install issue?
    According to previously mentioned article:
    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Vista-SP2-Fails-to-Install-on-PCs-with-Cloned-Disks-or-Partitions-111761.shtml

^ "I've seen reports that it wont work with GRUB"? (May I add: I have not researched this; just taking this person at their word for now.) So I am assuming that Grub/Lilo "break" SP2 due to Vista examining the boot sector on "C:".

And no, this isn't a 'mirrored' disk. I simply use GRUB as my boot loader and chainload boots into Vista Ultimate x64 partition. (Still get vista menu/F8, etc.) I have checked the:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366
page, and gone through all the steps (and wasted a tremendous amount of time-per usual with Microsoft).

Since Grub steps in over Vista I am wondering if this in not indeed the problem?

Of course I have never noticed this in an SP update in the past (Xp or Vista). And apparently (as usual) Microsoft wants to punish any other OS that happens to be on your system.

    @Lori
Yes, I wasn't even aware SP2 was available at all. It came up yesterday in *Windows Update* . So this leads me to believe it just might be available for public consumption. (A bit early, maybe. As if this has never happened before, either.)

    @MS
Where is my free upgrade to Windows 7 and I will just erase Vista?! ;)

I also wanted to point out (before I forget) that I run an AHCI bios (I use the Intel Matrix (from Intel site) driver under Vista-and no I don't run anything in a RAID) that has broke some stuff in the past. Recently, these issues have started working: (C: Drive "restore point" and Full Computer Backup). Don't know if this could be breaking SP2? Maybe turning my "main" Bios back to simple IDE/SATA would fix the issue? Will try if I have any more time to waste on this.

    Lory,
Both my drive and the SP2 installer have full control on the admin accounts (which is what I'm logging as).

    Brady,
Running the boot repair tool didn't change anything (the tool reported success on the command, so the boot sector and MBR were rewritten to spec).

I'm not running any mutli-boot system such as Grub.  I did use a tool that used to bypass the TCP/IP half open port limit by automatically disabling digital driver signature checks (it's called "ReadyDriverPlus") and a patched tcpip.sys file, but I uninstalled it prior to installing SP2 (which is supposed to fix the TCP/IP half open port limit) and I did the boot fix procedure to undo any possible conflict ReadyDriverPlus might caused.

If your type "bcdedit" in command prompt and it says "the boot configuration data store could not be opened. the system can not  find the file specified.", you should use the vista install CD repair the startup. Thanks for the link REPL.
Microsoft's resolution is to unplug all non-root/boot drives. Or do a full re-install! Vista resides for me on my "root/boot" drive in all boot cases (every OS boots from that physical drive). Vista also happens to be on the first primary partition. So if anything can be considered root (read: C:), it is Vista. I also am mentioning again that I run x64 Ultimate. (contrary to title of this thread).

Don't think I will go the route of full re-install! Of course they fail to mention that Vista will not "see" the root drive if a boot manager has replaced the default vista boot "loader". Had similar problem in the past, which is mentioned in an above post. (The AHCI problem was before Grub/Lilo/anything else was installed on this.) That time it was (assuming) because Vista didn't like the early AHCI drivers Intel supplied for my motherboard. Wasn't talking to root/boot drive correctly? My point is, don't always assume MS has every resolution listed in their support area's. Obviously, my problem is a little different. I tried that resolution (unplugging HD's/DVD/CD/etc) in the past. Wasn't the problem. (Switching to "Legacy" IDE/Sata in BIOS fixed it back then.) Intel seems to have improved their "Matrix" drivers, recently. So again my assumption for a resolution is the removal of Grub boot manager. Will update when I have time.

    Good luck!
    LAST EDIT!

    MisRiver and et al,

General information to all in this thread

Microsoft has free Phone/Remote Access Support for SP2 Install...

www.support.microsoft.com > Get Help Now > Windows Vista SP2 > Create a Support Ticket > Support Ticket will have Toll Free Phone #,  Ticket # and available hours 7days a week.

Having this Support Ticket makes it easier for anyone with SP2 Install issues or questions ~ Before , During or after the Install to get free Help.

Microsoft answered my questions, took shared access of my PC and walked me through the install.

Microsoft uses the Stand Alone Package and the Update Readiness Tool

SP2 Update via Windows Update will install only required files for your system.  SP2 Update via Microsoft will download complete Stand Alone Package initally to your Desktop and during the install only the required files are installed.  Update Readiness Tool was downloaded/installed and run prior to SP2 install.  I had no issues.  Microsoft had me disable my Norton Security and instructed me how to start SP2 install.  Total time 3 hours.  I asked alot of questions and the Tech had to attend an SP2 meeting during our session.  Actual install/configure/restart time for SP2 ~ 10 min.   Microsoft created a Folder for the two KB's which I may save/delete.  The Readiness Tool is found in Update History and SP2 Update is found in Installed Updates.  Temp files are created as with any install.

    Just wanted to share....Good Luck
    Respectfully
    bjm_

Whether you use it or not, apparently it cannot find bitlocker system files. Don't know if that is why you are failing the upgrade, though. It looks to me like you have the same problem with your 'bootmgr' that I had. If you notice your 3rd line above, it says,
"Process exit code 2150694986 (0x8031004a) resulted in success? FALSE" (This isn't telling us much, but I am assuming it is a bitlocker problem).
Something happened before this to give you a bad exit code. You list everything after.
Before the first instance of "Failure will not be.." you should have more info in log.

I also think it tells you one thing you need to fix (or at least check on) now. Bad system files:

    Close all running programs.
Run Administrator "CMD " by Right-Clicking under Start Menu/Accessories and picking "Run as administrator "
    then enter the following commands:
SystemPropertiesProtection.exe    > create a restore point for your C: drive, then close.
    * (you may want to zero out your cbs.log at this point as SFC will log any corrections it makes - and you can start fresh...)
sfc /scannow     > wait. (you will need a Vista DVD or folder with Vista system/install files.)  It should restore any corrupt/missing system files (hopefully!)

(When finished *you can* check "%windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" to see if it corrected anything. (bitlocker sys files? we are verifying everything though.)
Per usual, a reboot is never a bad thing.
Once back up. Close any running progs.
    Run the stand-alone SP2 installer.
Report back with errors (if any) or success (hopefully).

I will list a partial log of mine. This partial log is BEFORE the first occurence of "Failure will not be ignored" has even been added. (I listed the first 3 dated entries (which are ok, and keeping in mind I am on a x64 system) so you can hopefully find this better):

    Hi Brady,
It seems this is somehow related to bitlocker, when I try running it from the control panel, it tells me there are system files missing and that I should run the "Startup repair tool".

I tried "sfc.exe /scannow", it said that some files couldn't be repaired.  It didn't ask me for the Vista DVD.

This is the output of the CMD window:
    ---
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
    em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
    ---

Looking over cbs.log, I've found two instances that need repair:
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\secdrv.sys
    C:\Windows\ehome\en-US\Intro.wmv

The WMV file I probably erased to make windows a bit smaller, it's a video file and I don't really need it.  Hopefully it has nothing to do with this failing as failing due to a missing video file sounds a bit odd.  The "secdrv.sys" file sounds like it might be a problem, however, running:
    sfc.exe /scanfile=C:\Windows\System32\drivers\secdrv.sys

Reports "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

It seems I'm not the only one suffering from this bitlocker specific failure as I've done a web search for "vista sp2 bitlocker 0x80004005" and came up with other posts on this issue, dating back to RC of SP2 and possibly even SP1 upgrade issues.

    @Moshe:

Before trying post to rescan system files (post after this one), read through this:
    Here...     (sound familiar?)

    See last post from bottom:
"Well, I was a little afraid to try the solution above since it envolves deleting my MBR.
Anyway, as every post (and CBS logs) indicated that the problem was related to BitLocker and Boot Records, I decided to try the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool. What it does is to create another active partition ( S: ) to prepare your harddrive to be encrypted. So, I thought it could eventually fix my "bad" partition and actually it did. All updates have installed just fine and I finally can install SP1. It was a very simple procedure. I don't know if it is more complicated to you guys who have a lot of different boot partitions and all but it was really painless to me (1 active and 1 passive partition on a RAID 1+0 configuration). Hope it helps..."

(Don't know if he was having the fveupdate problem, but seemed to fix his...)

    My advice:
Try playing around with bitlocker and see if you get any errors...not sure if actually running the drive prep is necessary!
    Try command (cmd):

    fveupdate /memtest

and see if you get an error about system files..? Mine says, "BitLocker Drive Encryption is not turned ON on the OS volume.".

Either way try: Control Panel and open Bitlocker. See if it is turned "On" on drive C: (or any drive...)
If you don't have an Icon:
go into "Programs & Features" / "Turn Windows features on or off" Bitlocker Drive prep tool (install it). (Mine is under "Windows Ultimate Extra's")
             or else
(If you already have an Icon, uninstall it, then re-install it.)

If you have *ANY* PRE-Vista/3rd Party boot manager/loader/interference, then your problem is with that. Have heard of an antivirus or similar causing issues.

I am wondering at this point whether you have a "TPM" module on your motherboard. This seems to be a common thread for ppl experiencing this whether SP1 or SP2. I would try the step (in last post) to "Uninstall" and then Reinstall Bitlocker tool. I would also try the steps detailing how to "bootrec" your /boot back to Vista. Somethings not right, obviously.
secdrv.sys = Macrovision.. so don't think that one matters.
Have you tried to access the control panel Bitlocker icon since you ran SFC?

    Brady,
Trying to run bitlocker control panel applet reports that there are missing system files, same for running 'fveupdate /memtest', the actual message is:
BitLockerUpdate: Failed. (0x8031004a) Critical BitLocker Drive Encryption system files are not available. Use Windows Startup Repair to restore files.

Can't even run the BitLocker readiness tool as it too reports missing system files.

Trying to intentionally corrupt the MBR so that windows can repair the bootloader is not an option.
I did try to rewrite the MBR/Bootloader using "bootrec" to no avail.
I haven't used any boot manager.  I do have two partitions on the system drive

Running the startup repair tool from the Vista DVD did nothing (reported no errors).

    Did it report that:
    bootrec /fixmbr   &   bootrec /fixboot
    were "completed successfully "?
(And I agree with you on corrupting the loader...) I meant that that post has relevant info as to your problem.
Vista Restore DVD: And that is another reason why I had you look at that post. Says using Restore DVD won't work. (Which I kinda figured.)
SFC would (usually) fix any problems, anyway.
Hmm.. so do you have a TPM on motherboard? Should list it as a "feature" or some such. If you notice most of ppl in post happen to mention TPM onboard.
If you do, try going into BIOS and disabling? (I don't have one on this Gigabyte board).

Did you try going in to Programs and features and removing (unchecking) "Bitlocker Drive Prep Tool", Applying (OK), and 'reinstalling'?
    Does this finish without errors?

    Hi Brady,
Yes, bootrec said "completed successfully" on both operations.
BitLocker says "TPM" module missing, so even if the motherboard has it, it's currently (and always has been) disabled.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Bitlocker drive prep tool".  No issues, installed successfully.

Running the drive prep tool fails and tells me i have to do it manually.  I did try to manually run it from the command line (CMD), but it failed there too.

What are the odds that my system drive having two partitions is the cause of these issues?

Don't think it's your partitions, as I have 4 on my default boot drive.
You mentioned that you "never installed the bitlocker update in windows update ".

If possible try 'unhiding' rejected updates, and install/update anything apropos to (Bitlocker/EFS) now, and see how that goes.

Erasing the secondary parition allowed the bitlocker readiness tool to create a partition, however, running the bitlocker applet from the control panel still says there's missing system files.

I didn't hide any update, the bitlocker update was optional (in the extras section).  Like I said previously, installing/uninstalling didn't have an affect.

I personally remember it updating once or twice. (even though I don't use it. Hoping this will magically restore something Bitlocker is looking for.)
So you did install update(s) through "windows update"?

Check your event logs (probably under Windows) and check to see if any other info is given when you get the system file missing error.

You're also absolutely sure you're not running some sort of AntiVirus, or "Internet Protection" which could be blocking the MBR/Boot check?? - Mc####/Sy###### comes to mind... You might try running "msconfig" and reboot into "Diagnostic" Startup. Try running standalone. See what happens.. etc etc.

Just trying to rule out possibilities.. :)

After saying I didn't install the bitlocker readiness tool, I went ahead and installed it (quite a few posts ago).  I did run windows update several times and there were no further bitlocker updates.  Every previous bitlocker security update was installed (if that wasn't clear).

All errors in cbs.log were adjacent to the Bitlocker errors.

    I don't run any active anti-virus software.

I'm an experienced (20 year) software developer and I am very very careful about what I run, my system is always patched and I keep an eye out for security alerts.  The only "anti-virus" I may have installed is possibly the microsoft one-care online virus scan (which does show up as an installed application but doesn't seem to have an active process).

So I have to "break" my linux install to install Vista? I don't think so.

I'm going to give EasyBCD a try. Thanks!

EasyBCD: Yeah, I ended up using it. Worked okay. I added/booted Slackware with no problem (which in turn boots into LILO loader menu). It is nice to be able to pick a Linux OS off a Vista bootmgr. ;) Their grub portion of program seems to be a bit lacking (I guess it was suppose to magically find the grub menu under /boot/grub in Ubuntu partitiion and it didn't).

    Yes,

Almost all the forums I have checked say reinstall Vista.

I have the same problem on a plain jane factor Dell unit with Autoupdates run and no problems until IE8 and SP2........

I have tried just about all the recommendations shut down almost all services run the readiness utility, etc.. Basically this is another example of microsoft screwups.  Never install an even numbered service pack!

You would think they would get a clue and when doing "extensive changes to the base system" maybe it should be done in single user with no drivers and designed to be run that way...

Give it a miss if it fails.

It was pushed via auto update The day you wrote this.

Thanks to the all of the post above.

At the end, the only solution for my problem with SP2 was to reinstall Windows Vista (and all my other Software).  :-(

    P.S. Also the german Microsoft support for SP2 could not help ( Case #: 20090527031038233  (KMM22052705I57L0KM) )

I think Dell (& HP) still use a "service" hidden boot partition. I wonder if this could be causing the problem? I also wonder why MS didn't use testbed this better? I got it to work, but I seem to be in minority?

I had this same concern, but no Grub or other external bootmgr.   The SP2 upgrade was getting the errors as noted: ["BFSVC: Failed to get system partition! Last Error = 0x3bc3"] [gle = 0x80004005] ..  The bcdexit command failed as you noted implying a missing or corrupted BCD record.   After repairing the record in C:\boot\BCD  the bcdexit command then produced valid results, proper BCD information was set in my Vista registry and the Vista Service Pack 2 package installed cleanly.

I searched the web for many days and tried everything but Vista SP2 did not install. Until I found this site http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/239296-sp2-wont-install-post1107475.html
The missing key SysHiper was the problem also for me andr probably for most people. As was suggested I created the entry in registry and the problem was solved. Strange that Microsoft doesn't inform about this simple solution or make a hotfix for it.

I too have been trying unsuccessfully to install SP2 for Vista 32 bit for several months now.

And with each install, as we get to the end, my system crashes causing all sorts of other problems including losing my icons for excel, powerpoint , windows media viewer and a few other ms ofc 2003 products. And not just lsing the icons, but the Windows Media viewer got zapped althogther...

How can I re-install these items and how do I download and successfully install  SP2?

    Please reply to: <email removed>
