I'm trying to download updates from Windows Update but I can’t advance to the page after I "click" the express or custom button.  I am always getting the following error message: Error number: 0x80072EFD “The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem." I don't seem to be able to find the solution from the options listed. Can anyone help please?

    Thank you

     Answer

The error number 0x80072EFD translates to: Cannot connect to the Internet server

    Error: 80072EFD = ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT

It is a possibility that either a firewall, anti-spyware program, web accelerator, Internet security, antivirus program and/or a proxy server is interfering with the Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) accessing the Internet. You will need to find what is keeping your computer from connecting to the internet so you can connect to Windows Update.  You can troubleshoot a firewall issue by verifying your Windows firewall is enabled and then disable any 3rd party firewalls and try to connect to Windows Update again.  It also could be Windows Update server is busy, so you can try to connect in 10 – 15 minutes and see if you are successful.

The following articles have good troubleshooting steps that may be of some assistance in correcting your problem.

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x80072EE2 or 0x80072EFD error

You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

Your first link returns: HTTP Error 500 - Internal Server Error.

There is a problem with the page you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

    Please try the following:
    • Contact the Web site administrator and inform them that this error has occured for this Web page address.

And the second link has been tried and is not successful. Have you any other suggestions? I am currently trying to fix this problem on two computers and have run across many threads on this very forum concerning the SAME error (80072 EFD) where the KB 836941 article is not effective.

Good luck getting an answer on this thread. You see I'm still waiting for a response on my june 18th question. Well except for the dolt you told me to make sure my time was right. Here's his sign .

I have yet to see anyone (including myself) say, Wpw, THAT fixed my problem. I am currently trying to get that fixed on 2 separate computers. I have the question out on 7 different forums worldwide. No one anywhere knows how to fix it.

Again good luck getting a response on this thread lol.

Geez give Marilyn a chance... Ok Marilyn come up with an answer that works.  Obviously you have given the canned answers .... time to either dig a little deeper in your mind of knowledge or get a Microsoft guru in hear that can speak with authority and provide a reasonable response to what has obviously been tested and tried by many.  At least you didn't give what most do when they really don't have a clue...that would be, if you need any more assistance feel free to visit http://www.microsoft.com .

incase you are wondering why this is an issue see the following information from Wikipedia:

    IPv4 private addresses

Early network design, when global end-to-end connectivity was envisioned for communications with all Internet hosts, intended that IP addresses be uniquely assigned to a particular computer or device. However, it was found that this was not always necessary as private networks developed and public address space needed to be conserved (IPv4 address exhaustion ).

Computers not connected to the Internet, such as factory machines that communicate only with each other via TCP/IP, need not have globally-unique IP addresses. Three ranges of IPv4 addresses for private networks , one range for each class (A , B , C ), were reserved in RFC 1918 . These addresses are not routed on the Internet and thus their use need not be coordinated with an IP address registry.

Today, when needed, such private networks typically connect to the Internet through network address translation (NAT).

    IANA-reserved private IPv4 network ranges
    Start End No. of addresses
    24-bit Block (/8 prefix, 1 x A) 10.0.0.0 10.255.255.255 16,777,216
    20-bit Block (/12 prefix, 16 x B) 172.16.0.0 172.31.255.255 1,048,576
    16-bit Block (/16 prefix, 256 x C) 192.168.0.0 192.168.255.255 65,536

Any user may use any of the reserved blocks. Typically, a network administrator will divide a block into subnets ; for example, many home routers automatically use a default address range of 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.255 (192.168.0.0/24).

    Greetings,

This Windows Update trouble started with the update of Windows service pack 2. this is not a PC issue of ours, it is a bad download and should be promptly addressed by Microsoft instead of giving Us bogus site info, and the run around. I have been a Attorney for over 20 yrs. I have even tried turning off My firewall and forcing this Update to continue, and also who ever came up with this Windows Defender should be taken out back and shot ! What gives Microsoft the right to add programs to our computers that we as consumers do not agree too ? Especially ones that can not be uninstalled or controlled so that We can shut it off if it is conflicting with other programs, that we bought and paid for to protect our computers.
Listen up and quick, I recently reformatted this hard drive, on this new pc I am using to get all unwanted hardware off, the updates were going fine for 4 DAYS ! until the service pack 2 update. This is NOT our problem but yours ! Deal with it correctly or I am putting an add in the news papers to take a poll on who all else is having this same issue and filing a class action suit against Microsoft ! I love to sue large Corps that think they can do just anything and get away with it when each pc that is sold puts more money in your pockets, So in turn you give US a bad download and give us the run around knowing that some of us are stupid enough to just go buy another pc. Have any of you even seen or felt how the economy is affecting those of us who are paying for your lavish lifestyles ? I think not.
Fix this issue ON YOUR OWN, or I swear to all that is holy I will make you wish you had !

    Signed by an IRRATE Attorney,
    Robert S Andrews

    Hi,
I have been banging my head against a wall for the past 3 days trying to sort this problem!!! I have exactly the same
error messages and this was BEFORE I added sp2. I haven't been able to get any updates at all including defender. I
have stripped the computer of any anit virus/firewall and any other programs that I consider may conflict with the
updates. From what I have read this seems to be an issue across Vista not just sp2 but no one has an answer. I have
even had someone download sp2 for me and then installed it to no avail!!

I have been checking posts on this type of error for the past several weeks. Most have been posts from 2007 and 2008. I just started having trouble getting the updates from Windows Update a few weeks ago. My error code is 80080005. I have done everything the posts suggested, but nothing has worked. I am not a computer expert, so I do not want to try reformating. I have too much information to loose. I also cannot afford to take my computer to someone to fix it, nor can I afford a new one. I am very frustrated with this "cannot search for updates" error. I have scanned for viruses and found none. I used 2 different virus scanners - McAfee and then Avast. Neither of them was able to find a problem. One post said to rename one of the windows files, which I did, and restarted my PC, and retried the update. It still did not work, and now I have yet another file for the one I renamed.

I am not sure if this is causing other problems on my PC, but, I tried to load some educational software on my PC and it failed to complete. I tried several times. I tried it on another computer, and it worked fine. But that computer is not having the problem I am having with the update of windows Vista. I really need to put this educational software on my PC for my daughter's school. So now I have two problems, and do not know if they are related.

    Frustrated!!!

Please do this and report back with what your log files say.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/902093

I've seen this problem a few times now with no solution. Seems to be related to SP2 and IE8.

My suggestion is don't update don't worry about it until Oct 22nd then upgrade to Windows 7 and get off Vista's Life of horrors!

I've upgraded all my systems off vista to Windows 7 and solved all of my issues.

Due to the update problems and everything else Vista's been doing I promote it to "Windows ME JR"

Are you all using Windows One Care? It's being killed off for Microsoft Security Essentials which is free.
This could be related to the issues.

Also please verify you do not have a proxy server setup in Internet Explorer
If you dont have one try this
Proxy 127.0.0.1 port 80 - Check bypass for local address

Under Advanced - Exceptions "Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with:"

Add *.* to the list of Exceptions

*NOTE if this doesn't work MAKE SURE you remove these settings so you don't have other issues.

System Restore should be on by default. Have you ever had the XP Antivirus or Vista Antivirus adware problem on this system?

There is a command to do a "sfc /scannowstart-run/type cmd/right click cmd "run as administrator"

This will scan and verify each system file and recopy from install disk if corrupted, missing or bad.

I'm not sure this will be happy if you've installed SP1,SP2 and have an old Vista OEM disk.

If someone's having this problem and can try this there are alot of other people having issues. This is a better solution than manully replacing files from another computer if it works.

You can also use "sfc /verifyonly" if you'd like to see what it reports back as corrupted or problem system files.

    Please report back your results.

    Keelhin,

I understand your frustration, however you are wrong if you think anyone can just fix their computer by reading alot of forums. You are correct we speak a different "english" than you just like a car repairman speaks a different "english" it take years to understand and learn the complex issue with any computer software.

If you feel this is taking to long to fix please contact microsoft support and pay for a service ticket. If you want our free help then here it is.

I would suggest one of these steps next. I've read alot of reported issue like you are having so don't feel like you're the only one.
Note: I only have Windows 7 on my systems and I suggest on Oct 22, 2009 you cut your losses and upgrade to Windows 7. The amount of issues Vista has had and the poor performance is shown in your frustration and ours. Windows 7 really solves these issues like XP did over ME.

Steps I think would fix this issue based on the 1 solution I found.

These solutions are based on the need to fix missing or corrupt .dll files which was reported as a solution linked below. Instead of trying to fix one .dll at a time which is very complex, use sfc /scannow (system file checker) to scan all system files and repair missing or corrupt onces from disk.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistaapps/thread/21e0dd42-44ae-4e07-9a9a-b0a3263345ec

    • Windows Vista System File Checker and repair from install DVD
    • Step-1 - Put Windows Vista Install DVD in drive
    • Step-2 - Click Start-(type in box "cmd") Right Click on "cmd" and Click "Run As Administrator"
    • Step-3 - type sfc /scannow (for scan and repair any corrupt or missing files)
    • Step-3 - type sfc /verifyonly (for scan but don't repair any corrupt or missing files)
    • Step-4 - Once done reboot and retry windows updates.

If sfc doesn't fix the issue then I suggest you do a full Windows Repair.

    • Windows Repair
    • Windows Vista can be repaired from the Install Disk, this will leave your files and programs, however you should always have a good backup!
    • Step 1 - Put Windows Vista Install DVD in drive
    • Step-2 - Reboot computer
    • Step-3 - Boot to DVD, (F10, F11 should say on screen boot menu) after you select the DVD to boot you have to "Please any key to start setup"
    • Step-4 - Setup starts - Install Windows, you will see Repair Console as an option, YOU DON"T want this one.
    • Step-5 - After this there will be another option that says Windows is already installed on this system do you want to Repair this install? Press "R".
    • Step-6 - *DO NOT FORMAT!
    • Step-7 - Once the repair is done(same time a full install takes) verify your drivers are all install under Control Panel-System-Device Manager if any need reinstalled please download them from HP, Dell or whoever makes your pc.
    • Step-8 - Run Windows updates
    • Step-9 - Report back here if it work or not.

Question I have for everyone with this issue.

    1. Have you ever had the Adware "XP Antivirus" or "Vista Antivirus"? If so how did you remove it?
    2. Have you ever used Windows Onecare on this system?
    3. If this problem has happed resently(last 2 weeks) and is new have you tried System Restore to a date before this issue.
    4. Do you have Windows XP SP1, SP2, SP3?
    5. Do you have IE7 or IE8? I'm really worried about IE8 as the issue here<---

    Hope this helps,

    Jeremy

    dlamb43,

    hmm, options

    • Buy new disk and reinstall windows (XP/Vista)
    • Wait until Windows 7 and buy it (Oct 22nd) must have dvd drive (preorder to save money)
    • Install Windows XP then install windows 7

but if the os is to that point you really need a disk. Some computers have a recovery drive with the install disk there try look for this at bootup.

Have you tried a system restore to before the virus?

Try running your unzip program (you may find your unfinished updates waiting there to be unzipped). If an update is stopped before installed it will cause Microsoft Update to hang or 'bottle-kneck' until you unzip the downloads. This worked for me. I also have Vista 32-bit Home.
