Windows Vista SP1 - after installing the update for IE8 (KB976749), I am no longer able to log into my admin account ('User Profile Service service failed the logon - user profile cannot be loaded')!  How do I fix this problem and log into my admin account????  Thanks in advance for some help...Should I just try to inunstall the update and then see if I can log in?  Or is there some other way to log into my admin account (via the command prompt perhaps)?

    Hi,

You can try to fix with Safe Mode - repeatedly tap F8 as you bootup.

Some programs like the Google Updater (if you added the Google Toolbar, Chrome or Google Earth) has been
    known to cause this issue.

How to Enable or Disable the Real Built-in Administrator Account in Vista

Use the Hidden Admin Account to lower your account to user APPLY / OK then raise it back to ADMIN.
This helps clear corruption. Do same for other accounts if needed after following the above message.

You can use the Hidden Admin Account - Make another account as ADMIN with your same password (or
two with same password) use one to test or fix the other.

You can run the Hidden Admin Account command from the Command Prompt from here if needed.

This tells you how to access the System Recovery Options and/or from a Vista DVD

If you can't access your old account you can still use an Admin to migrate to a new one (remember to always
leave an Admin Account that is unused except to test and fix).

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

First of all thanks for the reply.

I booted in safe mode and was able to log into my admin account.  However, the event log says that it was not able to load my profile, and loaded the default profile instead.  I am not able to create a new account (at least, not from safe mode).  The event log gives me no clue as to what actually caused the problem, and suggests that I go see my system administrator - who is me.

I will follow your links as above, and see if I can solve this one.

Thanks again, and will let you know what happens.  BTW, I am running 32 bit not 64 bit.  I will assume that makes no difference.

    Cheers,

    Allan

    Hi,

The site I referred to is just called Vistax64 and it has tutorials for 32 and 64 bit Vista. If they
are different the site will specify which although in this case there is not difference.

That error is a pain however usually correctable.

    Good hunting.
