Windows Defender and McAfee
- I recently renewed my McAfee protection but since I have, every time I turn on my computer, I get an error message that the Windows Defender failed to initialize. How can I either turn off this error message permanently or get both programs to run together? It is just a nuisance having to see this error message every time I turn on my computer. - Hi Di,
My guess would be that somewhere inside of McAfee is a list of allowed programs. Windows Defender may be blocked. As an alternative, you can turn off Windows Defender by starting the program and going to tools, then options. Scroll all the way to the bottom and uncheck "Use Windows Defender".
If you are unable to start Windows Defender, you may need to disable McAfee first.
Hope that helps.

I don't know if Vista Ultimate X64 is any different but I followed your above advice in step 1 (TS100507 steps 1&2) and received Cleanup Successful. When I go to your 2nd step Disable Windows Defender - I had already disabled it in services but was still getting the 0x800106ba error - I now set it to manual or automatic to try to start it and receive Error 1069:The service did not start due to a logon failure.
Before reading your post McAfee led me to TS100610 and I used the sc config windefend start= "disabled" (runing as administrator) - do I need to undo this before disabling in services? I tried "enable" but it wasn't recognized.
After the TS100610 try I followed Article ID: 931849 but couldn't see Windows Defender to do steps 1 or 2 so I went to step 3 and performed the registry edits, some of which failed.
The bottom line is I have uninstalled McAfee, cleaned it up. Services say WD is disabled but I still get 0x800106ba message whenever a user logs in and am not running virus protection.

Di- Hi, this is not an answer to the problem just above but tracks with the discussion, I think, of Defender and McAfee. I hope it's ok. I'm a first-timer.
I have Vista Home Prem./ IE 7 (SP1) and McAfee suite (here we go!!). I opened up the web today and got a pop-up (I have a pop-up blocker on so this made it seem more 'official') that said it was "Malware Defender2009" and found a bunch of viruses on my hard drive. I have never had a virus in eight years of computing. I was a bit suspicious when it told me to scan and it would destroy spyware or viruses. I forget the exact wording. It had "Click Now to scan and remove" type box.
I went to my programs and found "Windows Defender" listed but inactive. I didn't know if this was the same thing. I activated Windows defender and scanned. It came up with zero problems in the 'quick scan'. Meanwhile the 'Malware' box program had run a screen anyway. I didn't click it to. It said I had had 368 virus/spyware items , on my hard drive mainly.
This 'Malware' has an internet address of http:\\malwarescanner20.com, which doesn't sound like an official deal to me. Does anyone have experience with this program? (and from what I read here, now I've got a problem getting rid of Windows Defender, but can do it with time). Thanks, Jerry - Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the above tips. The applications seemed to perform well, found some errors but nothing major. They all report the system to be clean however I still receive the 0x800106ba error.
Was there anything I can do to reverse the "disable" command used per TS100507? I still get logon failure when I try to start Windows Defender (McAfee is uninstalled and cleaned out).
Is my last resort reinstalling Vista? Hi JSlongbeach,
1. Go to Start -> Run and type services.msc
2. Now look for the service named Windows Defender,
3. Double click to bring up the Properties window.
4. Set the Startup type to Automatic
5. Click Apply then click Start

Vincenzo Di Russo - Microsoft MVP Windows Internet Explorer, Windows Desktop Experience & Security - Since 2003. ~ My Blog: http://blogs.dotnethell.it/vincent/- the easiest way to disable windows defender for the ones of us that aren't too bright, i had to do it this way too, is go to

all programs,
accessories,
right click on command prompt and run as administrator,
then type msconfig and hit enter,
under the startup tab, on the left you'll see windows defender and uncheck the box,
then hit apply and okay your way out.
restart your pc and you're good to go. Ok so the solution is to either disable Windows Defender or go through a lengthy un-install re-install loop?! Not sure who dropped the ball on this but either McAfee or Microsoft should own up and fix it. This problem should not be left for the end-user to figure out and repair/ apply a workaround. I have Windows Vista home premium and I too got that error message after installing mcafee 2009. After attempting to intall the mcafee commands in admin mode in C:\ ,as reccommended, Defender still gave me the error message.
Maybe I did not input the commands in correctly?
However I later used Programs--Adminstrator tools --- config system and at the startup tab, I unckecked the windows defender box
clicked apply and OK.
Upon restart I no longer got the error message.
Maybe this is a simpler solution- Walt,

- The same problems described above has been bothering me for some time. Nothing I have tried from forums etc has helped. Unable to install as not in list, disabling didn't work so I contacted Mcafee who advised as follows:
* Click the Start button, select All Programs, then Accessories and finally Run.
* Type in msconfig and click OK.
* Click Continue when Vista's security Warning appears.
* Select the Startup tab and remove the check from the box labeled Windows Defender. Click OK.
* Click on "Exit without restart".
Hooray - no message anymore!

Lou x I have been struggling with this issue for three days. In the last three hours, I have come to learn that it is a McAfee issue. Not a big issue, but a McAfee issue none the less.
If McAfee 2009 is running, it will not permit Windows Defender to run at the same time. 1). They tell you if you are experiencing this issue, you have a worm.
2). Their software was initially designed only to recognize Norton. (Well, at least that's how it appeared to me.) McAfee fixed that. But,
3). The error code is the same as the error code they used a couple of years ago for a different problem. (Therefore, leading you on the wild goose chase.) (I restored one of my tow computers that was affected by the issue, hoping that would resolve it, before I realized that all of the information on the Microsoft site might be too old to identify the issue. so if i do these 5 steps that will solve this defender issue and i dont have to pay for another mcaffee subscription?- Re: receiving error message 0x800106ba for windows defender
I am glad to say I have just found the answer to this question on another Forum
http://forums.techarena.in/vista-security/1136952.htm and have resolved my mcafee/windows defender error message without having to uninstall windows defender from my PC
this is really easy and now both Mcafee and Defender work perfectly ......hooray
Here's how I fixed it:
Click Start
In Search type - services
Click on Services in the list
You will now have a list of services on the pc
Scroll to Windows Defender and it will say Manual
Change it to Automatic and Start it then
Reboot and the message is gone from both of my computers.....
Thank you Christine Williams who gave us the answer!- Proposed As Answer byLeo™ Sunday, July 05, 2009 7:57 PM
- "susdit girl" & Christine Williams, thank you, both, for the answer.
Over the past four (4) hours, I have tried several different alternatives, as mentioned, including disabling Windows Defender from "Services" as well as "System Configuration." Neither proved as effective as the recommendation you proposed. Without disabling any features, you solved the issue altogether; you didn't just offer a workaround.
Thank you! Thank you!
You are THE VERY BEST!!! KelleL
This really works doesn't it? I just cant believe Microsoft or Mcafee dont just post this information on their websites. It drove me nuts trying to find the answer with out dismantling my Window defender function. I'm not at all technical (practically PC illiterate) and managed it!
Its all thanks to this Christine Williams on the other site.
Susdit Girl- To all in this Thread,
Just my 2 cents... My Norton product install disables Windows Defender by default. Symantec Support claims running both products may cause a conflict. But, it's my choice to leave WinDef Off or to turn On. Through WinDef Tools > Options is easy way to enable or disable WinDef. This post may be completely off issue and apoligize now for butting in to McAfee Thread.
Respectfully submitted
bjm_ - Brent,
I have been trying this but how do you get
sc config WinDefend start= "disabled"
sc stop WinDefend
to line up like this I tryed and failed..
Very Lost in this process.
I followed the instruction but, could not get it typed in like above!
Can you help me?
I type one handed because of a disability. Could that be the issue ? Do I need to do something with two hands in typing?
Thanks, - Sorry, but the solution is another. It´s very easy. Right clic in "computer", then in "manage", after in "services and aplicattions", finaly in "services". Choose Windows Defender and double clic in it. When the menu is open, you change to "automatic" in option "startup option". It´s it. Done. No more problem. Believe me.
I recently renewed my McAfee protection but since I have, every time I turn on my computer, I get an error message that the Windows Defender failed to initialize. How can I either turn off this error message permanently or get both programs to run together? It is just a nuisance having to see this error message every time I turn on my computer. It isn't necessary. Can you assist?
Thanks

Hi gtrbby2!
Look my thread below. Believe me, no more problem with Windows Defender. It´s very easy. Right clic in "computer", then in "manage", after in "services and aplicattions", finaly in "services". Choose Windows Defender and double clic in it. When the menu is open, you change to "automatic" in option "startup option". It´s it. Done. No more problem. Believe me.I have been struggling with this issue for three days. In the last three hours, I have come to learn that it is a McAfee issue. Not a big issue, but a McAfee issue none the less.
If McAfee 2009 is running, it will not permit Windows Defender to run at the same time. If I hadn't had such a hard time logging in to post this answer, I might have been able to point you to a McAfee support sheet that discusses this issue directly on point. Logging in to get information is, in fact, a big part of the problem. You won't get the information from McAfee unless you log in.
I have multiple complaints about both McAfee and Microsoft for failing to make this information known at least to McAfee users. (By the way, it may affect users of products other than McAfee. I use only McAfee.) I guess they want to know how much of a problem it is, plus keep from advertising that there is a problem. My complaint against Microsoft is that:
It occurred to me that the Microsoft explanation did not explained why it happened to both computers simultaneously.)
The solution that they post is quite effective, (once they explain the problem.)

I have the same problem and I tried what you said. I have one question:
after the
sc config windefend start= "disabled"
should I press enter to wright the second line? If not where and how do I type the second line?
Steve - How can I move to the second line to enter the second command without pressing enter? I can enter the first line, but when I get to the end, I have to press enter to get to the next line, then when I enter the second command, I get a message saying service not started.
Thank you
Roger Hi there
I have an alternate solution to your problem and its guaranteed to work:
Defender successfully fixed - against McAfee.Pathway to Success - follow these prompts for Vista!!!!!
go to Control panel-then Administration Tools - Computer Managerment - Service Application - Services - find windows defender in Services you will notice it will be blank or disabled - now you have to high light windows defender, double click and then select automatic, click on the word Start - apply changes and re boot your computer - and we know this works because it took us 4 HOURS to complete and ours works fantastic - good luck !!!!
This should also work with XP.
this resets the ability of mcafee and windows defender to work together rather than just disabeling defender alltogether.- Proposed As Answer byrfrolick Friday, June 12, 2009 7:30 PM

Hi,
Many thanks,
Isn't it a pity that the information isn't more readily available from the perpetators of the issue.- Hello everyone!
I had a very similar problem. I too went to McAfee and they told me to disable Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. Because: "they interfered with their software."
I then folowed their instructions and turned off Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. But I still had problems. Come to find out IE7 also caused some problems with it at times. Then I found out they had a engine run out of date so that caused my Security Suite not to update properly. So I once again checked with them. The final solution was to uninstall and then reinstall. I have yet to reinstall due to other problems. The program is aproximately 68MB and will takeover 6 hours to download via ial-up internet access. Well, I always get part way done and of course, my internet access gets interrupted and I have to start over again. I have been trying for 2 months now. I asked them if it was possible to download onto a flash drive and then install onto my computer, never heard back from them! I even had them tell me not to have any other anti-virus, anti-malware, and/or anti-spyware programs installed on my computer! Because they interefere with McAfee's Programs. !!!!!!That is B.S.!!!!! Of course I did a little research on that. I checked on several different computer related websites and they all said the same thing. I even checked with the manufacturers of the other programs. They said McAfee was Bordering on breaking the law by telling me to unistall all other anti-malware, anti-spyware, and/or anti-virus programs when there is very little evidence that they cause any problems.
So after my McAfee contract is up next year, I will look for something else. - This just might be that McAfee has Anti-Spyware included and it doesn´t need Windows Dedender, I have this issue at Norton 360 Premier Edition v3 but because I have the Anti-Spyware included (Even better because it doesn´t work),I have Spyware Doctor (Super recommended to download by Google Pack) so it just might a configuration error OR a Malware, I recommend you to scan with Spyware Doctor.
- Thank you for this information. It really worked for me when nothing else did.
- Thanks susdit girl! I have been going nuts trying to find an answer. I tried a few of the other posted solutions, yours was the easiest and the only one that worked for me>
Thanks again

abrose- Hello and thank you, I wanted to keep both operational if possible, and so far your solution has worked. I will keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again

- The SAME thing happens to me,EVERYDAY?And,IT IS a Nuisance Ever Time WE waste Our Time for 2 Products WE paid$$$ for?!Adam
the easiest way to disable windows defender for the ones of us that aren't too bright, i had to do it this way too, is go to
start,
all programs,
accessories,
right click on command prompt and run as administrator,
then type msconfig and hit enter,
under the startup tab, on the left you'll see windows defender and uncheck the box,
then hit apply and okay your way out.
restart your pc and you're good to go.
I also had the same prob, very frustrating, Thanks for the tip trudog, you now have legend status. thanks M8 !!!!- Hello everyone!
I had posted on here before, that I had experienced the same problem. I once again had to uninstall my McAfee twice due to other problems I was having. But this time the McAfee Program automatically turned off the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. So I think McAfee must have and Microsoft must have talked to one another and came to an agreement about this to allow the McAfee program to turn off the windows programs or gave them the coding to let them do it.
Because after both times I had reinstalled McAfee, the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender programs were turned off.
My suggestion is that if you have McAfee and want to keep it with Windows Vista, Is to Uninstall McAfee then Reinstall McAfee. That should aleviate most if not all of the problems between Windows Firewall and Windows Defender and with McAfee. - Hi,
i've done those 5 steps accordingly to your solution above. But i still got the message "Application failed to initialized...." whenever i startup the computer. PLEASE HELP!!!- Proposed As Answer byJ.woon Tuesday, July 21, 2009 9:00 AM
- Hi,
I've got the answer how to disable Window Defender from McAfee. I've just solved the problem. The message"Application failed to initialized..." doesn't appear anymore whenever i start the PC.
1. Go to start search, and key in 'msconfig'. You will see 'msconfig' appear above the start search box.
2. Right click 'msconfig', another small window (known as System Configuration) will open.
3. Click on the 'Start up' tab.
4. Search for 'Window Defender', which is most probably being ticked.
5. Un-tick the Window Defender.
6. Click 'Apply' and 'OK'
7. Click ' Restart'
The message should be gone when the PC restarts.
Hope this help will those having the same problem as I do earlier.
J.woon - Walt, You hit the nail on the head. This has been such a pain but your solution is what I did (and had to conceive it on my own, believe me, I am NO GEEK either!!). My next question is this: do we need Windows Defender for anything else? I researched that as far as good protection goes, it's not very strong, and I remain faithful to McAfee and Avira- so, are we going to run into future problems ?
- Hi Walt
I experienced this issue also. I tried your fix but it didn't work for me.
Am I doing something wrong?
Response I got was :
C:\Windows\system32>sc config WinDefend start= "disabled"
[SC] ControlServiceConfig SUCCESS
C:\Windows\system32>sc stop WinDefend
[SC] ControlService FAILED 1062
Can you help?

- Walt, Hi and thank you, I am still having the problem, I was not sure how to enter the command promt you describe above? are there 2 commands? you dont explain whether or not there is a space between "disabled" and the next listed line sc stop WinDefend I pressed enter after each command(it still gives the error code when starting) and then I entererd all on 1 line:
sc config WinDefend start= "diabled" sc stop Windefend pressed enter still happening? Is is one or two commands AND is there a space between 'disabled" and sc or NO SPACE???? Pleasde advise. Thank you so much Jerry DeFalco - Thank you, best and easiest solution

- hi Vincenzo-This is a follow up
You said good luck-maybe I will hit the lottery too
I GOT MCAFEE AND WINDOWS DEFENDER WORKING TOGETHER
I finally got up enough nerve to just click the start box that comes up when you simply click on the windows defender icon in the start menu
I checked services to see if was enabled and it was
i ckecked the mcafee firewall to see if it had full access it did
So I held my breath and started it
It updated and scanned
I unchecked real time scan and re-booted with no errors
I re-checked real time scan and rebooted with no errors-Whoopie
The only thing I can think of is after doing a complete system destructive recovery I did put in all the updates and enable and update widows defender with no virus scan installed(use windows firewall)
Then at the end I put McAfee back in and of course it shut it off but apparently did not disable it other than in the defender screen itself by unckecking ((USE WINDOWS DEFENDER)
Im not recomending any else try this( i dont want to get yelled at for ruining somebodys computer)
Maybe as you say
GOOD LUCK and I got lucky
It is working scanning updating and re-booting with no errors on either end
One other thing is that I think it helps to remove McAfee completely and then enable and update windows defender first-because the firewall set on automatic did pick up the windows defender user interface as full access-im sure it wont work unless the firewall has it in there
Also anybody that uses program or regestry cleaners be sure not to enable any cleaning of windows defender files
Thats abot it
Thanks Ray

- Hi Walt
I see that this is the answer by Brent-Support Engineer MSFT
I agree that it is if you want to get rid of the error message when trying to start windows defender after installing the new McAfee 2009 version
However
see my posts ray7500
I did not experience any issues on 3 computers-windows defender is working perfectly on two xp computers and one Vista computer with no errors
and no losss of performance
it must have been the way i installed it
deleted mcafee and got defender up and running
installed mcafee after and started windows defender through the defender user page-enable real time protection-checked use windows defender and off it went
no boot up error or no shutdown error
still cant be more specific as to why its working for me
mcafee did not help or wanted to help and microsoft said to shut it off too
but its working with mcafee and i want to see how long it works with no problems - i am getting an errer message that the windows defender failed to intialize how can i turn off this erroe message

Robert Lancaster - This makes me happy that I don't have McAfee any longer. I've had almost all kinds of the types and I recently (till today) had the SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition. I now only have Microsoft Security Essentials and AntiVir PE Classic. How is it possible that a spywareprogram is infected with a trojan? My SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition apparently had a trojan named TR FakeAlert that it didn't remove. I couldn't even try because the trojan denied me access to the program. I now have the TR FakaAlert quarantined in AntiVir PE Classic, and afraid to delete it, even though I've uninstalled and removed SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition. The trojan was found in the SUPERAntiSpyware.exe file. <.<
I hope it's not possible ever that I will get a trojan with the Microsoft Security Essentials? :-o - Hello everyone!
Proximity, What might have happened and has happened to me with the SUPERAntiSpyware program is that it found the trojan named TR FakeAlert and quarantined it. Then when you ran the Microsoft Security Essentials scan it picked it up as being in the SUPERAntiSpyware.exe file. i have had similar experiances with other Antivirus and Antispyware programs as well. They can sometimes pick up quarantined items in other Antivirus and Anti-Spyware Programs as being an infection of that program. - Well, the trojan wasn't quarantined in the SUPERAntiSpyware program because I couldn't gain access to the program because of the trojan, so when I ran a search with the AntiVir PE Classic, IT detected and had the trojan quarantined. When I had the SUPERAntiSpyware program uninstalled and then installed the Microsoft Security Essentials and ran a search- I found nothing.
So far I've had no problems with the Microsoft Security Essentials, and I hope it stays that way. :) I have to say I like that it protects the computer all the time, instead of the SUPERAntiSpyware that I had to scan manually (free edition).
(Added: I saw that the Defender also have C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SASDIFSV.SYS as a potential damage. No more problem with that now. :] ) - Hello everyone!
Hi Proximity, Sorry I forgot the part about the Trojan not allowing you access to SUPERAntiSpyware. So far I have not had a problem with the program. I did have a similar experience with a different program Do not know if there was any bad programs such as a Trojan or what but the one Anti-spyware program I had would not update or load up properly. I contacted the manufacturer of the program and they recommended an uninstall and reinstall. I did scan with other anti-virus and anti-spyware programs but nothing showed up, so I presume I had a bad file or 2 which caused that problem. At least that is what the program manufacturer thought in my case.
I do know that sometimes spyware can hitch a ride on the Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Programs while being downloaded, depends on where you download from. Had that happen to me but with a anti-malware program. Could not get it to work properly so uninstalled would not reinstall. Did scans and found a Trojan, quickly quarantined it and deleted it.
Glad you do not have any more problems, as of yet. Hope you do not have any more and good luck!
