error message states "windows firewall cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows firewall service?" then you can either click yes or no. I click yes and it comes back up with another message saying windows cannot start windows firewall service. Why? all i want to do is allow a program through my firewall.

    Hi  Kafedyna,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

    a)      Which version of Windows Vista is installed on your computer?

    b)      Do you have any third party firewall installed on your computer?

I have few steps which might help you.

    Step 1

Run an online virus scan as it might have caused due to virus.

Get a free PC safety scan

    Malicious Software Removal Tool

    Step 2

Perform clean boot and check if you have similar issue. Clean boot will start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

The following link has steps showing how to perform clean boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

    1)      Perform clean boot (Check the link for Performing clean boot)

    2)      Enable half of the services

    3)      Determine whether the problem returns

    4)      Enable half of the startup items

    5)      Determine whether the problem returns

    6)      Repeat the above steps until you find out which service or program is causing the issue

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration Utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

Note: Please ensure that the computer is set to start as usual by following the step 7 from the article : How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows7 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135.

    Step 3

Try to set a manual exception for a certain program.

To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start and enter the Control Panel
    2. Here, access the link called “Allow a program through Windows Firewall

Go to the General Tab, and make sure that the option “On (recommended)” is selected. If not, enable it (this will enable the firewall).

3 Go to the Exceptions tab at the top.

4 To add a program you to your exception list click Add Program (near the bottom).
5      A list with the programs on your computer is displayed. Locate the program, highlight it and click OK.
6       Be sure that the check box besides your program is checked, then click OK.

Hope the information helps. Please post back and let us know.
