AnswerError opening Windows firewall: 0x80070005 Access is denied

    I have Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 installed on my computer. When I open a Bittorrent client, I receive the following error message,

    "Error opening Windows firewall: 0x80070005 Access is denied."

    I've added exception for a specific port 24366 (used by the BT client) on the Windows Firewall, to receive incomming connections. However my port test (http://www.utorrent.com/testport?port=xxxxx) and telnet test to that port, seem to fail. The online port test provides the following error,

    "An error has occurred!
    Port 24366 does not appear to be open."

    This looks like a problem with the Windows Firewall. Any ideas on how I could get this problem solved?

    Thanks Rob for the various ideas. I finally got this working!!!!! Not sure if this is a Vista problem or just my computer, however when I open the BT client using "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR", it started working.

    Hope this helps others out there having similar issues. It is a two steps process,

    1. Make sure the torrent port is open in the Windows Firewall
    2. Open the BT client using "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR"

    NOTE - I am already logged in with an Admin account.

    Thanks guys.

    Hi VistaUser007,

    Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk.

    Chethan

    That does not address my inquiry. You are giving me the definition for the use of Windows Firewall and how it helps protect ones computer. However when I am allowing TCP traffic on a specific port, why does the Windows Firewall continue to block it.

    Also, I am logged in using an Administrator account. Given all this, I should be able to modify settings as I wish. Could you please provide more appropriate assistance?

    Thanks again for your help!!!

    Hi,

    Try disabling the Window Firewall entirely for a quick test, does it work then?

    From another report which cites Microsoft :

    In Scanning process, we can use Permission Reset Tool in TC.

    1. Please download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the installation patch onto the Desktop:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en#AffinityDownloads

    2. Please go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file.
    3. Please select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission settings on the current machine.
    4. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" bar, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
    5. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:

    @echo off

    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

    @Echo =========================
    @Echo Finished.
    @Echo =========================
    @pause

    6. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "reset.bat" as the file name and choose "Desktop" from the left panel as the save location.
    7. Refer to the Desktop and right click the reset.bat file, then choose "Run as administrator."
    8. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

    NOTE: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished, you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue".

    Note: About some driver update installation procedure, we also received this error code, please reroute this kind of case to Vista System Team, because, it may regard for third party programs structure.

    Good luck!!!

    Another report which also cites Microsoft.

    The In-place Upgrade is a tool to repair the system. Through the special upgrade process, we will be able to repair the system. The In-place Upgrade will not affect settings like photos, movies, documents, etc. that are saved on the computer.  However, it is recommended to first backup your important information and files to other partitions or other disks. Then please perform the following steps:

    Turn off Windows features before performing an In-place Upgrade

    ================================================

    1. Click Start, and click Control Panel.

    2. Click Classic View on the left pane, and double click Program and Features.

    3. Click "Turn Windows features on or off on the left" pane.

    4. In the Windows Features dialog box, uncheck all of the check boxes, and then click OK.

    If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    If there the "Windows features" is empty, this can be caused the system files have been damaged, please go on with the steps.

    Now, let's perform the following steps to repair the corrupted files:

    Please Note: A Windows Vista install disc cannot perform In-place Upgrade on a computer running Windows Vista with SP1.

    Please follow the steps to remove SP1 from the following link if we use a Windows Vista  install disc:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537/en-us

    If you are using a Windows Vista with SP1 system and got Windows Vista with SP1 disc, please go on with the following steps:

    In-place Upgrade

    =============

    1. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.

    2. Click Start and choose Computer.

    3. Please find the "setup.exe" file in the DVD-ROM and double click it.

    4. Click Install now.

    5. When we are prompted to input the product key, please click Next without inputting any key. The setup wizard will prompt and ask if you agree to install Windows Vista without the key. Please choose to confirm.

    6. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the system files of Windows Vista.

    Note: While performing the In-place Upgrade, the system will restart automatically (several times) to merge the files and programs. Please leave the computer alone and do not configure it until In-place Upgrade is completed. The system will start Windows Vista once it is upgraded.

    When the In-place Upgrade finishes please check the original issue again.
