Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window.
I cannot open the default profile in outlook 2007 since service pack 2 was installed on my vista ultimate 64-bit edition machine by windows update. I receive the error "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window." I have created a new profile and it works ok, but would really like to get the settings from the other profile. Is there anyway to recover this apparently "broken" profile?

- Hi pdhot,
The way to fix this is to do a system restore.
Below is a link to those instructions.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212/
While the "broken profile" part of this post belongs in the Vista forum.
I'm going to suggest that you pop over to the Office forum for the Outlook part. That is more appropriate for them to handle.
Hope this helped!

- Same problem, W7RC 64bit. When i try to run "outlook.exe/resetnavpane" I get a "windows cannot find...." error. If i run "outlook.exe" on its own it fires up Outlook but doesnt seem to recognise the "/resetnavpane" command.
Any suggestion? - "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane" from Dayneb worked like a charm on a 32-bit machine, thank you so much for that.
- There should be a space between "Outlook.exe" and "/ResetNavPane":
Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
Without the space, /resetnavpane becomes part of the file name rather than a command for Outlook to execute.

Just wanted to say that I had the same problem with OL and Vista 64bit. The fix above worked for me.- Worked for me! Running vista business on a Sony Vaio. Had this 2nd time now, first time I had to restore using norton ghost, today my backup is so far back so had to google it to see if someone else is having the same issue. It looks like a lot of people are. This was a great tip, saved me a lot of time if I do an image restore. Thank you.
- I had this problem and took your advice -- and it worked! Thank you so much! I am a self-employed writer and cannont function without my Outlook.
- Hello
I do not know how to do Start>run? What do I click on to do this to be able to enter the exe part? - I need help with the same thing - but do not know how to do the first part: start>run???
- Click on little multi-colored icon at bottom left of your screen. In the empty box (it might say "start search"), type what is noted in the answer above (Outlook.exe /resetnavpane). Good luck!
- Thank you!!
- Reset navpane worked for me, I had tried system restores and application reinstalls.
- Simple easy and best of all it WORKED!
Solution works THANK YOU, but for amateurs like me REMEMBER following steps
click on Start Button (round button with microsoft logo on it)
Click RUN (command box appears)
in command box type: Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
Remember to leave a space between outlook.exe and /resetnavpane otherwise it wont work to fix the problem
Thanks again- OMG this SAVED me.. thank you for posting this answer.
I have been troubleshooting my wife's Outlook on her laptop for HOURS until I came across your posted solution and in 30 seconds it was fixed.!!!!! - Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
Worked beuatifully , thanks
saves a system restore , why would u want to do that , when you could use Windows Uninstaller tool , and resinstall it?
Cheers again for the solution , whoever posted system resotre needs badly , badly hurting...

matt - You are an angel!!!!!
Thank you so much! I, too, had tried everything over and over again. This reset is the answer. After the first time I used it, my battery died and I had the same problem when I rebooted. I reset again, then shutdown my laptop and restarted. Outlook ran perfectly.
Anyway, not sure exactly what this command is doing, but you can bet I won't forget it! - Thanks for the fix, it worked fine. For my own peace of mind, I'd like to know why Outlook does this in the first place. Judging by this forum it looks like it's a very common problem. Is it a bug in Outlook, or is there some other reason?
- Thank you so much for that description. Now I will try it.
- There should be a space between "Outlook.exe" and "/ResetNavPane":
Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
Without the space, /resetnavpane becomes part of the file name rather than a command for Outlook to execute. - thanks dude!!!

Never seen this issue. However, the solution worked. I am running Win7 Ult. x64...
So just to be clear for those of us running Win7
Click on Start...In the space for Search Programs and Files...type RUN...
then in the window that pops up type that command "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane...SPACE MUST BE THERE between outlook.exe and "/resetnavpane."

outlook.exe /ResetNavPane

I run a business from home and cannot operate without all my stuff which is in Outlook.
Thanks for anything you can suggest to help...At this point...
I have tried to run the suggestion on this site. I have run the repair off the disk. I have completely uninstalled and re-installed Office and each time I try to open Outlook I keep getting the same error message.
Please, Please, Please help...
- ____ yes, You nailed it. Those tricky command switches are something else. Thank you for your post, solved my problem with minimum stress.!
- The /resetnavpane only works if the user is also the machine admin....What about managed domains where only the sysad can get to the command prompt? Running Outlook from the command line as the SA will open the Outlook as the SA as well.
- Thank You very much. Your instruction saved me a lot of time and effort. It worked the first time after many other proposed solutions had failed to produce results.
- Thx - I was about to get worried - this fixed it
- I had this problem too and your answer fixed it - many thanks indeed :-)
