AnswerCannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window.

I cannot open the default profile in outlook 2007 since service pack 2 was installed on my vista ultimate 64-bit edition machine by windows update.  I receive the error "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook.  Cannot open the Outlook window."  I have created a new profile and it works ok, but would really like to get the settings from the other profile.  Is there anyway to recover this apparently "broken" profile?

    Hi pdhot,

The way to fix this is to do a system restore.
Below is a link to those instructions.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212/

While the "broken profile" part of this post belongs in the Vista forum.
I'm going to suggest that you pop over to the Office forum for the Outlook part. That is more appropriate for them to handle.
    Hope this helped!

You want the settings or the data?  If its your old data you're after, attach your old .PST file to the new profile you created:

Reconnect your old Outlook data file

If the data file won't open in the new profile, it may be damaged:

How to find and run the Inbox Repair tool in Outlook
To repair a damaged Personal Folders PST file

and there are Profile repair tools available:

I'm running outlook 2007 on a Vista Vaio
Prior to trying the "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane" I had tried renaming the extend.dat & outcmd.dat files which changed nothing. And applying the outlook registry fix from ms, again to no avail. The only other way I got it working before finding this site was to deinstall and reinstall Office...a bit dastric I think..Thanks again ;0)

    Hi,

Excellent fix - worked perfectly. THANK YOU very much.  This problem was getting to be a real pain in the ____.  Other sites suggested System Restore - this didn't work!

What exactly does this do though (apart from the obvious, reset the navigation pane)?

    Many thanks,

    Adam.

There should be a space between "Outlook.exe" and "/ResetNavPane":

    Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Without the space, /resetnavpane becomes part of the file name rather than a command for Outlook to execute.

You need to put a space after the 'e' and before the '/' like this:

    Outlook.exe  /resetnavpane

in command box type:  Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Remember to leave a space between outlook.exe and /resetnavpane otherwise it wont work to fix the problem

    You are an angel!!!!!

Thank you so much!  I, too, had tried everything over and over again. This reset is the answer.  After the first time I used it, my battery died and I had the same problem when I rebooted.  I reset again, then shutdown my laptop and restarted.  Outlook ran perfectly.

Anyway, not sure exactly what this command is doing, but you can bet I won't forget it!

Thanks for the fix, it worked fine. For my own peace of mind, I'd like to know why Outlook does this in the first place. Judging by this forum it looks like it's a very common problem.  Is it a bug in Outlook, or is there some other reason?

There should be a space between "Outlook.exe" and "/ResetNavPane":

    Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Without the space, /resetnavpane becomes part of the file name rather than a command for Outlook to execute.

My question to MS is, if you know this works, why doesn't outlook just do this after it closes with this error code and and just tell me you had to reset to fix it? :)

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window

Never seen this issue. However, the solution worked. I am running Win7 Ult. x64...
So just to be clear for those of us running Win7

Click on Start...In the space for Search Programs and Files...type RUN...
then in the window that pops up type that command "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane...SPACE MUST BE THERE between outlook.exe and "/resetnavpane."

    Thanks!

There should be a space between "Outlook.exe" and "/ResetNavPane":

    Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Without the space, /resetnavpane becomes part of the file name rather than a command for Outlook to execute.

For those that can't read you must include a SPACE between the command (outlook.exe) and switch (/resetnavpane). So, (exagerating the space)...

    outlook.exe                  /ResetNavPane

Also, for those that don't know you can use WindowsKey+R to initiate a Run box.

Thanks dayneb for a quick and eay fix to what appears to be a problem for lots of people (including me until just now).

From Outlook 2007: Troubleshooting Outlook Crashes:

    /resetnavpane

Clears and regenerates the Navigation Pane for the current profile.

I tried the outlook.exe /resetnavpane fix (with the space), and it is to no avail.  I am running Microsoft XP Pro and Office 2007.  I wasn't having any problems and Outlook stopped opening and I am getting the "cannot start microsoft office outlook. cannot open the outlook window. . . " problem since attempting to install Microsoft Office Outlook Connector 12.1.  I cannot get into Outlook.  PLEASE HELP!  I think we are on the verge of a divorce in the house over this.  I run a business from home and cannot operate without all my stuff which is in Outlook.

Thanks for anything you can suggest to help...

    At this point...

I have tried to run the suggestion on this site.  I have run the repair off the disk.  I have completely uninstalled and re-installed Office and each time I try to open Outlook I keep getting the same error message.

    Please, Please, Please help...

The /resetnavpane only works if the user is also the machine admin....What about managed domains where only the sysad can get to the command prompt? Running Outlook from the command line as the SA will open the Outlook as the SA as well.

Thank You very much. Your instruction saved me a lot of time and effort. It worked the first time after many other proposed solutions had failed to produce results.
