AnswerCan't open any hyperlinks. (This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.)

    Hello to everyone. First forum question I ask in my life, so be gentle.

    I  recently installed IE8 and G.Chrome, suddenly, no hyperlinks in Outlook 2007 worked. Tried opening hyperlinks in Word, Excel etc. same problem. I searched various forums looking for answers. This is what they all said more or less.

    When clicking on hyperlinks from emails or anywhere else, I get this message;

    This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

    Cause;

    (After you upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or to Internet Explorer 7, the following registry key is either missing or corrupted: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command)

    Weird, I had installed IE8, not 6 nor 7. This could mean problems persist on all three (3) browser upgrades. But how come it never happened before?

    Resolutions found, and applied;

    1. Reset internet explorer settings to default. DID NOT WORK.

    2. Restore System to earlier date. DID NOT WORK.

    3. Power off by pressing power button 10 seconds and then restart, followed by this option (REPAIR COMPUTER to when it was working properly or something.) DID NOT WORK.

    4. To resolve this issue, import the registry key from another computer or use registry key supplied here. I did this one last. And this did in fact, DID NOT WORK EITHER.

    I followed the on line instructions step by step. Now I’m out of options.

    FYI; Not sure if this helps.

    Sony VAIO FZ180E, Vista Ultimate 32bit (Upgraded from premium), CentrinoDuo2.0 4GRam, 4MBCashe, Norton360 2.0, M.Office 2007, what else could I let you know that might help.

    Even though it is not a crippling problem, makes using my P.C. somewhat undesirable. And I really love my P.C.

    I am having the exact same problem and followed the instructions that Shane outlined above with absolutely no success.
    Do I need to uninstall IE8 and re-install?

    I had the very same problem. My OS is Windows 7. This happened after I installed MS Virtual PC and then VMware Workstation 6.5. I tried everything I found on the net with no success, including uninstall of IE8, export of registry entries etc. Finally I gave up. But somehow in a week the problem dissapeared, when I set up the default browser to Chrome. However first time, setting default browser to Chrome did not solve a problem. So I guess there was something else that fixed the problem.

    I loaded Google Chrome, didn't like it and removed it. I then found my hyperlinks wouldn't work in Outlook, Word and Excel.
    I've tried just about every remedy I can find on the net and nothing works including Shane's suggestion. I have found that if I create a new user account they work fine for that user. I'm about to reload Chrome and see if that cures the problem. I will get back to you if it works.

    1 hr later more info.

    I re-installed Chrome and the hyperlinks worked again.
    I un-installed Chrome and they stoppped working again.
    So I re-installed Chrome but as I still dont like the look of it I still use I.E. 8
    Google and go and jump in the canal for the hassle thay have caused me and I will have to leave Chrome on my PC which will irritate the ____ out of me everytime I see it

    Had the same problem with hyperlinks in Office programs having uninstalled Google Chrome.
    I reinstalled Chrome but still had to set it as my default browser. Then the hyperlinks all worked ok.
    I then changed my default crowser back to IE8 and the links still all work - thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
    However, I think Google need a kick up the pants!! for this - Maybe they decided to hijack all out Hyperlinks as a punishment for uninstalling their program!!!
    Still don't like Chrome so won't be using it in the forseeable future...........

    I had the exact same problem caused by uninstalling Google Chrome and the solution mentioned by Maureen is what solved it.
    I tried everything else before and then some but nothing worked.
    I think Microsoft or one of its partners should reverse engineer Chrome installation and publish this as abuse by Google. With the war going between them, I doubt this was an innocent mistake by Google.
    IE 8.0 is a memory hogg but I will take any day over Chrome that has a long way to go and with what they did to me I will never use it again.

    Hi Araiot

    After many hours of searching the only solution I found was to re-install Chrome then if you dont like it or dont want to use it just make IE your default browser.
    You can see from my notes above 26th April that I proved Chrome was the guilty party. I just wish I could find a way to remove Chrome totally but each time I do I lose my hyperlinks.

    Regards John

    Hi, I was able to fix the hyperlink issue after uninstalling chrome but don't know exactly why. here is what i did.
    I downloaded the file form Steve H http://www.local-it-guy.com/assets/files/IE-associations.bat in the other forum mentioned above from Steve and i launched it.
    Then I uninstalled Chrome, but not with start- control panel - uninstall a program, but with start- all programs - google chrome - deinstall chrome.
    With this i took the uninstall routine from google which they provide when you install the browser.

    after that I again started the little file from Steve (run as administrator)

    finally it worked!!! now I can launch hyperlinks again from any office application without any error.
    thanks!

    3 Run Firefox and allow it to automatically make itself the default browser

    4 Open Tools - Internet Options – Programs and make IE the default web browser

    5 Close IE

    6 Uninstall Firefox

    All your links should now work correctly.

    Hi John
    Can I just check with you that you uninstalled Chrome before installing Firefox? I followed your tips (Above) and reinstalled Chrome, then made IE8 my default browser - all hyperlinks ok. However, I would be interested in getting rid of Chrome altogether.

    Firefox is proving useful in sorting out a problem I had with Adobe Flash Player 10/Vista Business/IE8 combination. Can't get Flash Player 10 to work under IE8 and, thanks to Microsoft again!!! can't uninstall IE8 and revert back to IE7. Sorry to go off topic a bit but you can see that Firefox could suit me well.

    My solution:

    Install Google Chrome again (the problem is gone, because I have come back to the Google territory)

    Uninstall Google Chrome with the Google Chrome uninstallation software

    Uninstall IE 8 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/957700) back to IE7

    Repair the registry as suggested in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310049

    Upgrade IE7 back to IE8

    I too, have the same problem. Running Vista and Office 2007 programs. All links had worked well.  I had installed Chrome and actually I like it, although it is not my primary browser.  I would be happy to liv e without it if I can get links to work again. All hyperlinks I had installed in Word and Excel documents now fail with the above infamous message.  I have reverted back to IE 7, no luck; I have uninstalled Chrome, No luck; I have repaired registry, no luck. I don't know what else to try. Nor, do I know what I can try putting back on my computer (Dell XPS M1530). I would like IE 8 again.

    Hi - just thought I'd share my experience. I have vista and IE8. The problem with hyperlinks in emails started a few weeks ago - but I hadn't made any system or software changes at that time. So it seemed to be a random fault.

    I spent hours researching this and tried the fixes relating to defaults - from IE8, from Settings, etc. Nothing worked. I was reluctant to mess with the registry so decided to leave that to last, and in the end did not have to go there.

    I had installed Chrome a long time ago and didn't like it so uninstalled - but the problem with hyperlinks in emails didn't crop up for months or even a year after that. But after reading these posts thought I would try the install and uninstall Chrome option. This had no effect.

    So I moved on to Firefox and Voile! Installed Firefox and the links worked. Changed default to IE8 and they still worked. (Have left Firefox installed and accesible - I am too sick of this to risk any more problems and have to spend and more time on it!!)

    Thanks guys - I hope other people with this problem find this discussion first!

    I too did not like Chrome and uninstalled it shortly after having a look.  That was months ago, but just recently my hyperlinks in Outlook 2003 stopped working and I was confused with the error message: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.  Over the last few days I have tried every fix and searched every forum for an answer because up now nothing has worked.  Then lo and behold I find the answer and OMG it feels good

    Hey guys.....I tried what J Flynn refers to...and IT WORKED; HYPER-LINKS FROM WITHIN WORD 2007....emailing....all prefectly normal now, with me IE8 as well; well done John; and i didnt have to uninstall anything..like Google/Chrome ...other than, install firefox...set the IE to default...and then unistalled it...making sure that the IE is set to your default again; and...to assure yourself that the hyperlinking still works...open word, create a 'web site' or a hyperlink to a file, (you will get a warning message) yes to it, and the file////web site will open anyhows...oh, and another thing-run your anti virus...ahead of schedule...(after the installation/uninstallation).to make sure, to be sure!

    actually.....the problem still persists!.............thursday 22 october 09........there is perhaps, an alternative....UNINSTALL microsoft WORD 2007; and install microsoft word 2000 instead; I mean, while the functions between the two are different, they do, however, offer the same operations......M/word 2007, is off course, more detailed....but then, there's not much of a difference save-the lay out??

    I have been trying to work this prob out....so, here;s another attempted method>

      outgoing ...zip (0.7 KB)
    If you're having problems downloading attachments, please sign in again and select "Remember me on this computer".

     unable to open the hyperlinks from Word 2007 application.

    Please follow the steps mentioned below to be able to open the hyperlinks from Word 2007 application:

    First  save the IE8.zip file attached along with this email on your Desktop first then perform a right-click on it and select > Properties and click on > Unblock. Next extract the .zip file on the Desktop itself. Please open the htm files.reg and html files.reg file, this will allow you to write the value into the System registry please click on 'Yes' to add the information.

    Once the information is added to the computer please restart the computer then perform the steps below:

    Close all the applications running on the computer then reset the web settings for Internet Explorer 8. For more information regarding how to reset the web settings for Internet Explorer 8 please visit the link below and follow the steps mentioned under 'To reset Internet Explorer settings manually':

    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-GB/help/ff6cc789-e857-439d-a384-08bfa45354271033.mspx

    Post Internet Explorer reset please click on the 'Round Windows Logo' button at the bottom left-hand corner and then click on the 'Control Panel' icon

    Next change the view to 'Classic View' for the 'Control Panel' at the top left-hand side, only if the current view is in 'Category View' else let it remain as it is

    Now on the 'Control Panel' window please 'Double click' on the icon mentioned as 'Default Programs'

    On the current window please click on the first option mentioned as 'Set you default programs' and then click on the 'Internet Explore' icon at the top left-hand corner

    Next click on the option mentioned as 'Choose defaults for this program', then check the checkbox mentioned as 'Select all' and then click on the 'Save' button

    Now once again click on the 'Internet Explore' icon at the top left-hand corner and then click on the option mentioned as 'Set this program as default' and finally click on the 'OK' button

    Hi, everyone,

    I seem to have a related problem but not related to Chrome.  I have hyperlinks in Excel 2003 workbooks that I use regularly in Windows Vista to reach websites by using Firefox as my browser.  No problem.  Today I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and, BAM, my hyperlinks don't work.

    Until I read the thread above, I thought the problem was related to the Windows 7 upgrade -- but it's not related to Chrome because I don't use it.  Can you help?

    Coincidentally with the first writer, my machine is a Sony VAIO, FZ160E.

    OK EVERYONE...I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER THIS PROBLEM.....this does not mean, that you need to uninstall word 07....it does not mean you need to change the default settings i.e, (IE7-IE8);

    First....check which software programme you use to 'open files/Jpegs/gifs etc;

    secondly....open word 07......(a practice run)

    thirdly.....create a 'click here' (Hyperlink-within word 07) to whatever file/jepg/gif you want to open-- follow instructions at (SIXTHLY)

    fourthy....after choosing-for example, Jpeg......and it does not work/open....(the hyperlink that is)...then follow the same steps as ascribed at (thirdly)

    fithly.....if either of the two ways does not work....follow step (thirdly) and the pop up box will open....go to the file/jepg/gif you wanted to open....(DO NOT OPEN/SELECT any FILE TO OPEN...JUST YET)......because there is another option.....further own the pop up....called CHOOSE DEFAULT PROGRAM"........<<<<.select .....(for the file etc you want to open)...another pop box will appear....asking you to 'choose which software programme you want to 'open the selcted file/jpeg/gif....(you may have one, or two different photo/file/jepg/gif' software installations installed....if this is the case)...then select...be it....WINDOWS PHOTO GALLERY" or the other prgramme you have, or may have installed......

    (sixthly).....what you need to do now...is (open word 07) type 'click here' highlight it, choose "Hyperlink"  go to the file/jpeg/gif you want to open....(remember, you already selected the 'CHOOSE DEFAULT PRGRAMME PROCESS)   for the file you wanted to open.....try this BOTH WAYS...i.e, (GIF/Jpeg)....good luck!

    it seems to me, that there is absolutely nothing anyone can do about this problem....I have spoken to Microsoft.....Dixons, Pc World, Tech world, and read most on this site....and so forth....and, what each of these bodies tells me...is that, THEY REALLY HAVE NO ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM....not even from a technical wizard!;    having said that....I shall persevere...to find an answer....(or a patch) for the problem....some suggestions are...uninstall IE8....reinstall IE7....DOING THIS MOST CAREFULLY.....because, there is a risk of other problems developing.......besides, the same problem will still be there....i.e, (if you wanted to. or had, created a file/Jpeg (from either IE8 IE7) and saved it into a folder etc....and you then created a "CLICK HERE" link in word 2007....using word 2007, operating IE8...(having uninstalled IE8) and now using IE7...the same problem will be there, (confused?...welcome to my world!) because the Files/Jpegs will have been created/saved etc, on two separate programes that LITERALLY DO NOT RECOGNISE EACH OTHER; this is the Problem that MICROSOFT will have to figure out.....but, dont be expecting flying elephants!.....................perhaps, and this is JUST A PERHAPS...if you uninstall MICROSPFT WORD 2007, and reinstall it (or Microsoft 2000) on the operating IE now....it might CATCH ON/link up; another possible answer is that, the problem is not with IE7 IE8..it is another problem from another operating source within the (PC) Programmes....that came factory installed....because the following message i.e, "Can't open any hyperlinks-This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" ..........appears to me, to not be IE7 IE 8 RELATED....the hyperlinks do work, for example,  when you type www. web address.com; within word....it opens....but when you create a 'click here' (within word) to a file/etc in a folder...there is a seaparate 'error message' popping up......this leads me to believe, that following the 'update from IE7 to IE8...this had some other effect of the 'securities' (the administrator) of the pc....u operate; I am presently looking into this as well....perhaps yu could too....and maybe yu might, everyone might, find the answer......if yu get it.........let me know?

    OK EVERYONE...I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER THIS PROBLEM.....this does not mean, that you need to uninstall word 07....it does not mean you need to change the default settings i.e, (IE7-IE8);

    First....check which software programme you use to 'open files/Jpegs/gifs etc;

    secondly....open word 07......(a practice run)

    thirdly.....create a 'click here' (Hyperlink-within word 07) to whatever file/jepg/gif you want to open-- follow instructions at (SIXTHLY)

    fourthy....after choosing-for example, Jpeg......and it does not work/open....(the hyperlink that is)...then follow the same steps as ascribed at (thirdly)

    fithly.....if either of the two ways does not work....follow step (thirdly) and the pop up box will open....go to the file/jepg/gif you wanted to open....(DO NOT OPEN/SELECT any FILE TO OPEN...JUST YET)......because there is another option.....further own the pop up....called CHOOSE DEFAULT PROGRAM"........<<<<.select .....(for the file etc you want to open)...another pop box will appear....asking you to 'choose which software programme you want to 'open the selcted file/jpeg/gif....(you may have one, or two different photo/file/jepg/gif' software installations installed....if this is the case)...then select...be it....WINDOWS PHOTO GALLERY" or the other prgramme you have, or may have installed......

    OK EVERYONE...I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER THIS PROBLEM.....this does not mean, that you need to uninstall word 07....it does not mean you need to change the default settings i.e, (IE7-IE8);

    First....check which software programme you use to 'open files/Jpegs/gifs etc;

    secondly....open word 07......(a practice run)

    thirdly.....create a 'click here' (Hyperlink-within word 07) to whatever file/jepg/gif you want to open-- follow instructions at (SIXTHLY)

    fourthy....after choosing-for example, Jpeg......and it does not work/open....(the hyperlink that is)...then follow the same steps as ascribed at (thirdly)

    fithly.....if either of the two ways does not work....follow step (thirdly) and the pop up box will open....go to the file/jepg/gif you wanted to open....(DO NOT OPEN/SELECT any FILE TO OPEN...JUST YET)......because there is another option.....further own the pop up....called CHOOSE DEFAULT PROGRAM"........<<<<.select .....(for the file etc you want to open)...another pop box will appear....asking you to 'choose which software programme you want to 'open the selcted file/jpeg/gif....(you may have one, or two different photo/file/jepg/gif' software installations installed....if this is the case)...then select...be it....WINDOWS PHOTO GALLERY" or the other prgramme you have, or may have installed......

    (sixthly).....what you need to do now...is (open word 07) type 'click here' highlight it, choose "Hyperlink"  go to the file/jpeg/gif you want to open....(remember, you already selected the 'CHOOSE DEFAULT PRGRAMME PROCESS)   for the file you wanted to open.....try this BOTH WAYS...i.e, (GIF/Jpeg)....good luck!

    if, you still have a problem opening a file using hyperlink within word 07.....despite the above info--then you need to do the following...

    open word 07....go to...

    Office Button (Top Left of word screen) click.....and go to WORD OPTIONS....

    go to 'advance button

    Uncheck CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink---click OK

    go back to word 07....

    type 'click here'--and 'highlight...

    select Hyperlink option....

    go to file required...i.e, Jpeg/Jif/file...click on it.....OK

    you will see that the 'click here' is now hyperlinked....(hand displays that so)

    when you click on the 'click here' you will probably get a 'warning notice' (Ignore) and open the file/jpeg etc....

    I note you have a problem with  Excel....i cannot imagine there be any trouble....since the above procedures are directly linked between word...and excel;

    Koches; check below....and do not delete any (software programmes) ....and, incidentally, in your control panel, there is no prgramm therein that 'sorts the problem.....you should refer to your "DEFAULT PROGRAMMES" (click start...go Default Programmes"......but, first, try the steps detailed below...and ...then set your (IE7-or-IE8) whichever IE you use, to your Pc's defaults; it really doesnt matter...because the IE7's and IE8's are not in fact the problem....the problem is connected to software progammes..windows photo gallery...(which opens Jpegs/Jiffs) to, whatever  other 'photo software' you use....you need to find  out 'which software programme you 'mess about with' when creating/saving pictures etc....and set it as the default prgramme....which should, when established, allow hyperlinking them from within word 07;

    John,

    Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Your solution worked !!!  It was simple and effective.

    I had installed Google Chrome, totally by accident (it was an option when I installed another software) and I uninstalled it immediately.  It is only after this event that my links in Outlook 2007 ceased to function preoperly.  I immediately noticed in Outlook 2007 emails, that I was no longer able to click for link to open in IE8.  I was so ticked, I had serious access denied issues with Vista64 last week, after 14 months with computer, that I was not able to update Nvidia driver in MS update and I lost all video driver capability except for basic generic windows driver, so I spent all of yesterday fixing the problem by using HP recovery tool (1 hr) and then the rest of the day with all of the Win Vista 64 updates and reloading software etc...so I was almost in tears when this Google Chrome installed and then caused this link problem because the day spent fixing my Vista64 "acces denied" problem (recovery and reinstall) worked fine and my computer was back to normal.  I started to look at my AV sw, I was ready to jump, but checked here and found ur solution.  Before I tried yours, I did try Shane's solution, but to no avail.

    I followed your instructions, It was simple and very effective, IT WORKED GREAT.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Kevin

    yes. thank you Robbie D.

    it really works.

    guys from Microsoft - IE department should feel bad for this solution.
    they are getting paid to produce progrmas and fix their own bugs, and in more than 6 months they didnt find the solution.

    I am Glad people are getting their problem sorted....I have done some further research with Excel, and find, that the problem about 'opening hyperlinks..within....i no longer the problem....following on from previous advises....It is a pity Microsoft dont employ people Like me.....having said that...I find also, that people 'panicked' by installing Chrome...Mozilla...Firefox, etc....which, in retrospect...wasnt really necessary....all that happened there was...you added further stuff to the Pc...taking up valid MB space!....

    For those that have successfully used this batch file, I would still like to see your "originalsettings.txt" file that gets created so that we can narrow down exactly which setting is actually causing the problem.

    I have had the same problem with Hyperlinks in Excel after installing Office 2003. The solution i found in XP was:
    Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs
    Click on the Set Program Access and Defaults button
    Choose the Microsoft Windows option and click OK
    My settings were then automatically re-configured and the hyperlinks appear to be working fine now.

    Hope this helps.

    This worked for me

    1 Go to http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

    2 Downloaded Firefox 3

    3 Run Firefox and allow it to automatically make itself the default browser

    4 Open Tools - Internet Options – Programs and make IE the default web browser

    5 Close IE

    6 Uninstall Firefox

    All your links should now work correctly.

    Thanks John... this worked for me.

    Thank you Thank you Thank you
    After spending a lot of time with Microsoft, both on the phone (never got through after 23 minutes of being on hold) and multiple e-mails of giving me instructions only a programmer could understand - and then with dell - you solved my problem.  All is good now.  Thank you

    I followed the steps for setting Internet Explorer in Windows Vista, which were a little different, but I am still having problems.

    Now I think all my interactive controls are gone, because I had some documents in Share Point that are not working right.
