AnswerTask Manager>click 'show processes from all users'>yes on UAC prompt>nothing happens

    OS using: vista 64 bit.

I recently tried the Elevation PowerToy from TechNet http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.06.utilityspotlight.aspx, I thought it would be nice to have some extra options in a rightclick e.g.

However this Vista got some sideeffects, e.g. the reason why I uninstalled it: I open the Task Manager and click on the 'show processes from all users' button.
This gives an UAC prompt which I acknowledge. But then nothing happens.
    And that !@$%?§ worked fine!

So I ran the uninstalled cmd file from the PowerToy package but, still the same. Task Manager doesn't swith to elevated rights. I can start it manually, like rightclick on a Task Manager shortcut and select 'Run as Administrator', that works.

Also, on a rightclick of a file/folder, I have options from the Elevation PowerToy still present, annoying.

I considered System Restore for a second. Yet my experience with System Restore is that this would remain resident as problem. Talking about the Task Manager issue. Moreover, I've met this issue before as mentioned below.

For the still apparent right-click options.. I know the tools from NirSoft yes. Just like Sysinternals. Powerful and useful indeed. Now if some Anti-Virus scanners would learn to make a difference between false alerts on his tools and real viruses. If some, more then some actually, of Nir's tools are a virus then arp.exe, cmd.exe, format.exe, ping.exe and a load others might as well be... There's a difference with a file actually being (part of) a virus and what a file can do.

There's a difference between a picture file and that same picture file with viral code woven in to it so that even most verifying codes will be the same. There goes my avatar.

For something like this right-click... regedit.exe
    No reboot..

However, encountering this Task Manager thing again (!) and still, no solution to be found on the web... Other related effects. I start up another application elevated, and it takes quite a while once I acknowledge the UAC, especially when I am using a program in the background which can use all memory, as a pure 64 bit application can these days.

I have had this problem before. And I apparently forgot what causes this Task Manager not switching to elevated status: Aero. When using all memory... things can occur, even running non-beta stuff 'stable', like this.
Somehow the operation vanishes in Aero. Seeing what happens when I start some other programs when the Core2Duo is working and how long it takes when eventually another elevated program does appear. It started as a sort of side-effect when using all available memory, happens afterwards when even there is a lot memory/cpu activity free for a longer time, system having been shut down e.g.

Solution: turn off Aero by switching to Vista Basic theme e.g. Apply, and reactivate Aero.
    No reboot..

Task Manager responding amazingly faster instantly.

I've been able to repeat this apparently, met the same issue two years ago when trying Vista and all it's bells and rings together (thus the load of issues with that). And for the same issue I had to apparently finetune Aero but it had no finetuning. Also I met this on my old 3,4 ghz hyperthreader laptop when trying a Vista beta, that was 32 bit, and even longer ago.

Another way is what I have done to avoid that from coming back: make it easier for Windows to operate, meaning I disabled some features. That's what I did each previous occasion.
I sure do miss a tool like 98Lite or XPLite,  something for today properly configuring a Windows (Ultimate even) after setup. And not talking tools like vLite, once a solid update occurs a vLited Windows can get other issues.

    Hi bambig,

Can you take a look in Program and Features and see if it is still listed there. If so, try uninstalling it from there. If it is not listed in Program and Features I would suggest reinstalling it, then uninstalling it from the Program and Features category in Control Panel. I’m not sure if that will make a difference, but it is the way that he instructs to uninstall it.

If you are unfamiliar on how to get to Program and Feature do the following:

    1.       Click Start

    2.       Click Control Panel

    3.       Click Programs, and then click Programs and Features

    4.       From the window that appears you can find the listing for the PowerToy and select it, after doing so you should see an icon appear at the top of the menu above the listed programs that says uninstall. Click it.

Please get back to use on the results so that we can further assist you if need be.

Hm, for once I thought that uninstall script would have undone changes made..

Yes, just digging now, the Programs and Features had some (remove only) PowerToy items listed. That was/is the only PowerToy I tried even. I removed them all and rebooted.

    "Effects" still present.

When I rightclick on a desktop shortcut, I have:

    Open
Run as different user (netonly)...                             <-- was not listed
Run as different user...                                           <-- was not listed
    Open file location
    ..

Checking inside Windows Explorer, rightclick on a file/folder looks back to it was previously.

Even odder, I just opened up Total Commander and a tiny Task Manager plugin it has, for seeing the Task Manager thing from another view. I go ahead and start Task Manager from a rightclick on the Task Bar, select "Show processes from all users", acknowledge the UAC prompt and Task Manager is there!
Hold it, let me retry that. /edit again closing the open Windows Task Manager of course/end edit again
    I try it again, nothing.
Wait half a minute,  again and nothing.
Indeed in the Total Commander Task Manager plugin taskmgr.exe vanishes in a flash after the UAC prompt.

I don't get any error or something on screen.
I wait a minute or more it doesn't work, I wait again and it works, I wait again more minutes and it doesn't work. While typing/making the previous sentence. That did not happen before using the powertoy.

If this might have popped out of nowhere and I hadn't initiated changes cause of the toy, the antivirus/firewall/filtering background monitoring program from G Data (not my G duh) I use, being TotalCare 2009 might be messing around. Possible that the antivirus/antimalware/spamfiltering/... engine monitoring for viral activities is messing up.

The last 2 weeks I wasn't able send out 2 mails, which should have worked and G Data was the cause. That hasn't happened to me years. Now, this time, each time I had been using up my available physical RAM and somehow the memory and the security package and emails getting out would not work. A reboot 'solved' that issue.

So I don't think the security package is the cause as it started using some options from the toy. Also, because I have been using G Data rather flawless for some time.

    Best regards,

    Bart

For the still present rightclick options... I know something about the registry, so I guess I'll be ending up removing some entries manually, used to have a modified rightclick in XP though not now. Basic 32-64 bit (unknown to the author) (mis)interpretation and problems on Windows I'm having?????? where's the blame, author didn't know about the necessary and correct features of the architectural differences I suppose...

But the  Task Manager not switching to higher rights after acknowledging the UAC prompt window? How to solve that?

Have you tried System Restore to get back to before your troubles began?

See if this tool can fix up your right-click menu?

ShellExView v1.35 - Shell Extensions Manager
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

When you used the cmd.exe to uninstall the program was that "Run As Administrator" too?.

OS: Vista SP2 32-bit all Windows Updates applied

Has there been a resolution other than the theme switch described as the solution here? This seems to be the only other place
on the web where I've been able to find this exact issue. I thought that maybe it was the Windows SDK that I recenly installed, but the problem persists upon uninstalling from Control Panel>Programs and Features. I've tried switching to the default Vista theme and then reapplying the Windows Classic (my prefered) and rebooting, but the bug persists. I do not have any of the Power Toys or other things that bambig had, just Visual Studio 2008, VB6, and a few other dev tools. Is this a registry issue or something else? It seems that the UAC tries to run the string '  "cmd.exe" /c takeown /f "C:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe" && icacls "C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe" /grant administrator:F  ' after you click 'Continue' from the prompt. I can see the command window does open briefly and then closes, along with the original task manager window that I clicked "show processes from all users" from. This command seems to be breaking, because if create a batch file with this command it throws and error as follows:

ERROR: The current logged on user does not have the ownership priviledges on the file (or folder) "C:\windows\system32\tasskmgr.exe"

Any ideas what this should be, and/or where to change it???
