Hard Drive full after running a back up of external drive (Maxtor) to be stored on another external drive (WD Book)

I used Windows Vista to run a back up of my Maxtor harddrive (111GB) to my WD Book ( 931GB). It seems to have used the PC (Acer Netbook) to run the process and now the hardrive of the ACER is full (only 1.5 GB feww of 53GB) and I can't see where the files are to delete or how to rectify.

No dual boot menu????

I had problems with vista and had to reinstall. I had been running vista and windows 7 in dual boot. But now, when my computer restarts, i dont have the menu that lets me choose which os to load. It just automatically loads vista. how do i get this menu back?

Error code 0x80070017 when trying to make a full back up using the Backup and Restore Center utility in Vista home basic on Compaq Presario CQ 50 laptop w/ 160GB hd.

I have similar problem, yet different than RotatingSimon asked on 6-22-09: Compaq Presario CQ50, 6 mo old when it crashed. I never used a computer before then either. When I cut it on, the Recovery Manager said I had to recover & reformat the hard drive (160 GB) to restore the comp to its factory state. I then didn't know I did'nt have to do it that way. But I did reformat the hd. After that, I couldn't back up my files except manually, and I know I'm not getting a full backup that way. It says data error (cyclic redundancy check), error 0x80070017. To fix it the way RotatingSimon did his external hd would mean to reformat my only hd again, and loose everything again. Is there any other solution? Obviously, if I can't back up my files properly beforehand, then I lose everything trying to fix the problem. Is there any help for the widow's son?

My laptop is running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32 bit. I recently installed QuickBooks Pro 2009 but it will not open and they say it is an issue with my .NET Framework. When I try to install .NET from Microsoft's site, I receive a message that says this was included with Vista and it will not install. I've tried to do a System Restore and any point I pick will not restore. I thought about reinstalling Vista from my included DVD with my laptop but I don't see the COA anywhere on the DVD or the laptop. If I upgrade to Windows 7, QuickBooks 2009 will not work on it. Please advise.

I run Vista Business 32bit with 4gigs of ram in my laptop.

Im a heavy multi tasker so i run a lot of programs the same time,

-firefox with 10-20 tabs with a lot of flash websites
-google chrome with 8-12 tabs with a lot of flash websites
-4 instances of explorer windows
-4 instances of notepad
-flashget
-Limewire 5 pro
-yahoo messenger 10
-windows live messenger
-dap
-win defender
-norton 360 v2
-cam frog
-skype
-HWmonitor from CPU-ID
-memory turbo (i use it for memory usage monitor)
-coretemp (cpu temp monitor)
-taskmanager (used for cpu usage monitor).'
and 3d shooter games from time to time while everything's still open

And that is always my setup whenever i use my laptop.

Currently i have my pagefile at 2gigs.

The annoying thing is, sometimes vista keeps popping up a message box telling me that my computer is low in memory, even though i have 700megs free or RAM (even when checking in task manager it reads 700mb free).
after increasing the pagefile to 4gigs, vista now neglects to use 1.2gigs of RAM during idle and showing that pagefile usage is at 2gigs (what a waste of good RAM!).

Then if my free RAM starts to drop to the 700megs line (minus 358mb from the video card) then vista starts to complain about low memory again!
And my HDD is always active and sometimes slows my computer to a crawl for 10-20 secs becuase of the 100% usage of HDD cranking and exchanging data. While i still have 300megs of free RAM!

I tried disabling the pagefile, and vista managed to leave 400megs of unused ram before it starts to freak out that memory is low. That i understand because my video card is integrated and shares its own video ram (which is 358mb max it can reserve for itself) from the main system ram. But why is it still showing up as free memory??? Even though my video card is already using it.

How can i stop vista from using the virtual memory first and then neglects to use the much faster RAM.

Its counter intuitive to use the HDD first for memory then RAM. That is really stupid. Then it leaves 700megs just sitting there unused while vista screams LOW MEMORY!!!

My memory modules are fine and i always check them using vista's recovery disc memory diagnostics tool every month.

Has anyone know a fix?
like a registry modification?
Or even a hack?

Computer is minimizing programs without command.

When I am playing a game every once in a while I would say about every 15 to 20 min, the program will minimize to the desktop regardless of the game and I did not instruct the program to minimize. I have used every anti virus software and all said I am clean I have also preformed a disk clean up and a defrag but the problem remains. how do I fix this?

Vista no longer boots and just goes into a loop unless I click F2 at first screen to enter settings then F10 then Return to accept settings How can I solve this please?

On Vista Home Premium laptop I am running out of Hard Disk space. I have already run diskcleanup with several different options and it does not cleanup any of these files. They account for about 76gig of space on my laptop.

I recently installed a program called Advanced Vista Optimizer. I ran a system scan and it found 2 gig of privacy files that could be removed. I have installed it on family members computers and it also found a lot of files that could be deleted. Why doesn't Windows delete these files? I have since ran it on friends computers and some have removed up to 8 gig and more. This seems like a lot of wasted space that Windows should be cleaning up without have to use third party software.

I am having trouble with automatic scrolling. Whenever a list appears, my computer automatically scrolls back to the top of the list. How do I stop this?

I am having trouble with automatic scrolling. When I try to lower my volume control, it scrolls back to the top, in my pictures document, when I scroll down the list of pictures, it scrolls back to the top, when I try to scroll down my list of favorites in Internet, it scrolls back to the top. Now in internet options my pop up block is set as the highest level and when I try to move it down to Medium, it scrolls back. I tried to run spyware updates and nothing was found. I tried to restore my computer back a few weeks and that did not help.

When I start windows vista I get the error message loading c:\windows\system32\sshnas.dll __Invalid access to memory location. This problem started today.

Hi all,

I have two problems I'm hoping someone can help me with please.

The first is that for some reason (I think whilst trying to fix problem #2) my boyfriend has managed to change the size of anything we see on the monitor. The fonts, the bottom bar and anything we see on the internet explorer has changed size. I've tried changing it on the right click on desktop, personalize, display settings but it doesn't seem to go back to the default size we had it. Is there anything I can do to put it back to the default screen size it would have been when we bought the computer?

Problem #2 is that basically the computer has started running really slowly recently for seemingly no reason at all. I've run Norton and also the Windows one that you can get from their website to see if there is a virus but it comes up saying that its all ok. What can I do to get the computer running faster again? I've also tried defrag and disk clean up.

Seems to be happening when calculating the free disk space. Running Vista 64 Ultimate SP1

Gigabyte GA-X58-Extreme
Core i7 920
6GB of ram
Adaptec 5805 with 8x1tb WD Caviar Blacks in Raid 10 partitioned as a single 4TB array.
Also using an intel X25-m 80GB ssd for the OS drive.

WinSxs Folder consuming enormous disk space

My WinSxs folder under Windows directory is consuming 10GB of disk space. We all know that Windows root folder is the system root directory. What is WinSxs? Is there any work around to clear up the free space from this folder? If it keeps building up with this rate, I can see my primary partition being being full very soon. Is there anything that I can do to get back this disk space?

Hi to all, need a bit of help with windows backup, every time i try to start i get error no. 0x80070002, this halts backup. I have tried re-running it but still this error, i have tried backing up to different media but still not working.

Any advice?

System specs!

Running 32bit vista, 4gb mem, quad core 2.4ghz, 750gb hard drive, main back up dive is 80gb installed in machine or 500gb external hard drive. Current used C drive is 286gig.

My laptop won't shut down, it gets stuck on the 'logging off' page and the only way to turn it off is to hold the power button. I have tried system restore but that only fixes the problem temporarily - it will shut down once or twice normally but then just gets stuck again. I have contacted Dell hardware support and have run the tests they have suggested which have ruled out a hardware problem.

My OS partition is 32.5GB capacity, yet there is only 1.4GB available. I have 6.5 GB of installed programs and a 3GB database on this partition along with the OS. How can I get more space? I am forever using disk cleanup and deleting all but the most recent restore point but can never get beyond 2.5GB of free space. The folder C:\Windows\System32 is 3.73GB - can I delete any of this? It seems like I'm using around 22GB for the OS - is that right?

I thought I could solve the problem by using some of the 7.5GB free space on the other partition by using the 'shrink' option within disk management, however the pronpt says it will only gain 45MB - again I do not understand this.

How can I increase the available space on my main partition? Thanks for any advice available.

First off I have a HP desktop with Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. About 2 weeks ago just out of nowhere a error code would come up and tell me one of these services has stopped working. It lets me either close it or look for a solution online. This happens every day. It's very random, I don't see a pattern to it. I mostly have Windows Mail, IE8 open, and sometimes Windows Media Player.

I am up to date on all the Windows updates, so I have SP2 and all updates since then. I also use my HP update service as well to make sure my drivers are all working and up to date.

One thing I would like to note is I did a diagnostic run on my computer and I got a error code BIOME-1 for my ram memmory. All other hardware checks were fine. The computer is supposed to have 2GB of ram, so is it possible if it's only running on 1GB etc.. that this is the cause of all my problems in regards to the windows applications crashing? Oh, also just about every day and sometimes more then once a day I get the blue screen crash. I am so lost, please help!

Hi All,

Recently I have started facing a weird problem. My system's Hard Disk is consuming a lot of space (in GBs) and I have no idea why is this happening. Recently I deleted lot of files to free space and I was able to free around 20 GB. Now after 3 4 days, OS has again started showing RED BAR on my C: Drive (thats the only drive - D is the Recovery Drive of 2 GB) with only 4 GB to spare. I have no idea where this space is going ...

I have done chkdsk /f ... checked recycle bin, cleanup, defrag etc ... also checked System Restore space ... thats around 1.3 GB (max: 1.5 GB) ... no issue in that ...

then i changed my anti-virus ... scanned for spyware / malware ... but nothing. System is clean ...

I have no idea whats happening and how can I fix this.

I have a 120GB Toshiba laptop running windows Vista. I am continually running out of disk space on my C: drive, which is now down to only 3GB free space. However, my E: drive has 32GB of free space.

Whenever I download new software, I always try and install it on my E: drive to save precious space on my C: drive, but some downloads don't always give you the option to do this.

I have tried copying some programs over from my C: drive to my E: drive, with varying results. I always get a warning message when doing this, saying that it may stop the program from working and sometimes they still work and sometimes they don't.

I have now explored the disk managment program and see that there is a facility that lets you expand and shrink volumes. Does this mean that I could shrink the size of my E: drive and in doing so it would then allow me to increase the size of my C: drive?

I didn't want to mess around with this until running it by some of the on line experts out there first.

If shrinking/expanding volumes is not the answer; then can anyone suggest what else I can do as I am very frustrated having lots of unsused space on my E: drive and hardly any left on my C: drive.

Hi,

I have:

1. Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2
2. HP Pavilion dv7-1020us

and system hibernates sometimes "without reason" since few weeks. I've checked Power Options (this situation happens when laptop is pluged-in) and hibernation is "turn on" only "on battery". I think, enought to "turn on" hibernation is to make computer to work on 40% max processor throught 10 minutes. Maybe this is something with procesor temperature? but why hibernation?
What do you think about it?

DISABLE AUTO SCROLL FEATURE

Whenever I scroll my cursor up or down a page; (vert.) & even horiz.ly, eventually this little auto feature appears and takes over and races in whatever direction I'm going. Causing me to loose my place and control over whatever I am doing. I've lost docs.,webpages, & sites, been logged off and even discon'd from cus of this feature. I HATE IT!!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP ME TO DISABLE IT. I don't know who invented it, but it is a piece of ____ and and costly to say very costly to say the least. This is a very nice Toshiba Satellite Laptop computer (Vista) less thn a yr. old and used probably a cpl of mos. time totally. The computer's been checked out by a tech and nothing is wrong with it. However, I do not have software insurance on it so, they could not tell me how to rectify THIS issue. MY ins. only covers hdware questions. It looks kinda like the scale on the rt of this box only w/lines across. This is my 1st time using this forum. I really don't know where to go to find the answer later, since there was no similar answers already posted now. However, my # is 8178475457 should there be an answer SIGNED...VERY DISTRESSED

I cannot install any updates for any programs that help Vista function. This includes Vista, any known anti-virus program, Anti-spy ware/malware, also I cannot restore because my upgrade disc for vista is too scratched, and I cannot do a system restore past one week of the day I try it, or repair it, I think its a virus but am not sure, we do not have the money to take it to geek squad or whoever they are.

First, my screen looks like someone took a rag and wiped a wet painting to the right creating a "smeared" appearance to the screen. Second, at the same time the first happened, the computer works fine but then stops opening programs. When I click a dropdown menu or the start button the screen flashes on then off quickly. However, if I open "task manager" and minimize it everything works again for awhile. Then I have to close task manager and reopen it to make things work again. I have ran virus protection(TREND), done a scan disk, defragmented, and even did a restore. I am out of ideas?

Just recently I've had a problem start with Vista windows losing focus randomly.

Doesnt matter what program, window, app, whatever I have open. Happens on them all and at random. Have to then click the said window to "activate" it again. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?

I stopped or turned off all automatic updates for windows, but sometimes 3 times a week or not for months my computer decides to shut down by itself and "configure updates". This happens at inconvenient times...how do I stop it?

Hi,

Just after I boot my computer (from standby or a cold boot), windows is reading and writing a lot to my SSD. During this period, the computer is very irresponsive. In process monitor, I can see that a lot of these I/O events are to the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\somenumbers by svchost.exe
I have already disabled the search indexing service, which helped a bit.

How can I prevent this from happening?

I deleted a program manually and not from the control panel....yeah, I know. How can I delete "Uninstall" this program that is no longer on my computer from the control panel? Thank you for any help!

I am using HP laptop with P8600, core 2 duo processor with windows vista home premimum 32bit operating system. the cpu usage remains 100% most of the time. on checking the task manager i found svchost (Dcom launch) is blocking more than 50% of the cpu usage. due to this my laptop is running slow. how can i reduce the high usage of cpu?

I am investigating intermittent hangs, where my cursor becomes an hourglass and the system will not even respond to ctrl-alt-del. In the event log, I find

Event 11 atapi : The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1.

How do i determine which physical device(s) this is associated with? Does this indicate a hardware problem, or might driver or firmware be the source?The system has been running fine for a couple years. I am not aware of any software changes that have occurred recently, though I did have to forcibly remove and reinstall iTunes a little while ago.

I have run SMART checks on all drives and run some diagnostics. I ran chkdsk on the one that I thought was the culprit, but no errors.

Just in case it was a memory-related hang, I tried to use the microsoft memory diagnostic on floppy, but it wouldn't write to the floppy (even though I could format it and copy files freely).

I have read Article ID: 953153 - Last Review: July 1, 2008 - Revision: 1.2 which is a Hotfix article. I'm trying to find out if this particular HotFix is the one I need to use to correct ther error:

The article warns about applying this fix to a computer that doesn't neede it, hence my question.
