Vista Diagnostic Performance Event 100

Hi!
I've been struggling with this event for several weeks now. My computer will be running fine then shut-down - no warning; the screen goes black and power shuts off. Checked for viruses and found none!

Did several searches for solutions but haven't found anything. I'm not a computer guru, so, if possible, please help me in layman's terms. Thank you so much!!!

I would suggest to start your computer in Safe Mode and let it run for a couple of hours, and see if it still shuts down.

Thanks for the suggestion. I restarted in safe mode and the computer still shut down. Here's the event log when running in safe mode:

Thank you for Posting back.

I do not see anything in the log file that you posted to indicate what is causing this issue. It clearly states that Degradation is false.

After you boot up the computer, how long is it before it "Shuts down" by itself and turns off?
When you boot backup, are you getting the prompt that it shutdown improperly and asks you to boot normally or into safe mode, etc?

I have a suggestion or two.

1st. lets boot the computer into a Selective Startup (Clean Boot) - this will help determine if a Service or Startup Program is causing the issue: Steps to do this are listed below:

How-to run Windows in Selective Startup (Clean Boot)…

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click System Configuration.

2. Click Continue, or provide Administrator credentials if prompted.

3. Click the General tab, and click Selective startup.

4. Under Selective startup uncheck Load startup items.

5. Click the Services tab, check the Hide all Microsoft services box, and then click Disable all.

6. Click the Apply, then OK, and then Restart.

Does it still shut down while in the Clean Boot mode?

If you still have problems, lets do a System File Checker - this will scan for possible corrupted system files and attempt to repair/replace them with good files.

Running the System File Checker…

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2. Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.

3. In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

4. You should see the following on-screen messages:

Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification % complete.

5. Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message resembling one of the following:

…found no integrity violations

…found corruption but repaired it

…found corruption that it could not repair

6. Please reply with the completion message that you received.

What are the results of the SFC Scan?
If it says something like there were errors it could not repair/fix, then do the following while still at the Command Prompt
Type in the following command then press the ENTER key
notepad sfcdetails.txt

Copy and Paste the last 30 to 50 lines here so that we can look at the contents of the log file - thank you

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the suggestions. Restarted in Clean Boot mode and still had the same problem.

Ran the sfc/scannow command and it did return a message that it found corrupt files that it could not repair. Typed in notepad sfcdetails.txt at the command prompt, but it just opened a blank notepad file. The scan did say that details could be found in the following file: c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log. The .log file is a text document, but when I try to open it, I receive an 'Access Denied' message. Do you know I can open this file?

Hei ang4,

I have experienced exactly the same as you using the sfc/scannow command.

I hope that Microsoft soon could solve the Critical error ID: 100 (Microsoft-Windows-Diagnostics-Performance), because they undoubtedly are responsible for their operative system: Vista, which they sell to the whole world.

Thanks for the reply. It's nice to know I'm not alone. I've never been so frustrated with a problem like this before and it seems no one can help.

I'll sometimes get the event 100 problem several times a day. I'll log on and then 10 minutes later my computer just shuts off. I feel like I've thown away all of the money I spent on this computer, which is only 4 months old!

Please let me know if you hear of any solutions and I"ll do the same. Take care!

Hi,

How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program
generates in Windows Vista cbs.log
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228

The log will repeat the same errors on the same date several times so plese only post each error section
once (look at path and filename). Some errors that can't be fixed are still no issue.

Then run checkdisk - schedule it to run at next start and then Apply OK your way out then restart.
