Nothing happens, Pressing C/A/D does nothing. The hard drive will continue to run and suddenly stop and Task Manager will appear.  After that it will continue to load normally.  It does't happen every time, usually I guess about every 4th or 5 boot up.  Sometimes Vista will be up and running in 30 seconds with everything loaded and the next time 5-10 minutes.

    Hi Nanadee,

Welcome to Windows Vista Answers Forums!

First you may try to boot in safe mode and see if the problem occurs in Safe mode.

To boot to Safe Mode you can follow the below given steps:

    1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart.

    2. Do one of the following:

    a. If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

    b. If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.

    3. In Advanced Boot Options, use the arrow keys to select Safe mode and then press ENTER.

If everything works fine in Safe mode then try to perform a clean boot from Safe mode and verify if any of the services or startup items is causing this issue. To perform a clean boot we will have to run System Configuration Utility.

To perform Clean boot and check if it works, follow the steps below and refer the following link:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939671

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista:

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

    3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

    4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

    5. Click Apply and OK.

    6. When you are prompted, click Restart.

    7. After the computer starts verify if you are getting the same issue.

If your issue is resolved after performing Clean Boot, then follow the steps mentioned in the following KB article to narrow down the exact source:

Also, see the section on how return your computer to a Normal startup mode by following the steps under “Reset the computer to start as usual”.

You may also refer the following link and perform an online scan on your computer to check whether your computer is been infected by any virus.

As I said above, usually every 4th or 5th time Vista 64 starts, it will hang for 5-10 minutes and the hard drive will run continuously  after the login screen. No input is allowed.  Pressing C/A/D does nothing and when it finishes, Task master will come up and it will run normally.   Sometimes Vista will boot up in 30 seconds with no problem and the next time I have this problem. I have 2 machines running Vista 64 and the same thing happens on them both.
