QuestionAccess denied to CBS.log file

    Hi there,

I found the cbs.log file but when I tried to open it I get access denied. Found a similar question in another post but was unable to find a solution. Running Vista Home Premium SP2 64 bit on a HP Pavillion dv9700 without Windows 7 or IE8. Also tried to copy the file to documents as suggested in another post and ran as administrator on the command line without any luck. Any other simple suggestions are appreciated.

How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program generates in Windows Vista

How to view the log file

The SFC.exe program writes the details of each verification operation and of each repair operation to the CBS.log file. Each SFC.exe program entry in this file has an [SR] tag. The CBS.log file is located in the %windir%\Logs\CBS folder.

Note The Windows Modules Installer service also writes to this log file. (The Windows Modules Installer service installs optional features, updates, and service packs.)

You can search for [SR] tags to help locate SFC.exe program entries. To perform this kind of search and to redirect the results to a text file, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start
      Collapse this imageExpand this image
      Start button
, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

      Collapse this imageExpand this image
       User Account Control permission
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

      Cheers.

    Hello talefeather,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers Community.

    Try this:

    ·          Click Start Orb > type cmd in the searchbox

    ·          Right-click cmd in the results above > click Run as administrator

    ·          At the prompt type notepad c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log then press enter

Then follow the step that Mick supplied.

    Hope this helps

    Chris.H,

Thanks for the suggestion. Your method worked but then you suggested to follow the step that Mick supplied. Now do I do this in the cmd.exe or in the note pad that came up after typing in the prompt that you suggested? Because if I follow the step that Nick suggested nothing shows up after hitting enter after typing in the prompt he suggested at the cmd.exe program. A little confused. Sorry.

    Hello talefeather,

What I was meaning by that is after you were in the file, searching for the errors. Take a look at this KB article about how to analyze the log file.

Use the method I provided previous to open the file, then look through the log file to determine what could not be repaired.

    Hope this helps
