Internet Explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
- This message keeps on popping up. Occasionally it will pop up during other applications (hence not posting this in the IE forum), however the application behind the error message continues to operate fine.
When I close the error message, a new window comes up suggesting that I check for updates - which then says I need to update to Service Pack 2, however this fails to load.
Using an Acer Aspire 5735Z 320GB HDD, Intel Pentium dual core processor T3400, 4GB DDR2 running Windows Vista and Windows Office 2007 and Internet Explorer 8.
I have no technical knowledge of the operations or terminology of the computer - I just want to use the thing without it throwing a hissy fit every few minutes.
I scheduled a Run Disk Check which ran through and then restarted the computer.
I have also run a System File Check, however it has displayed the following info:
Verification 76% complete.
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
I had this as a seperate topic in reply to smoeone with a similar problem, however as I have not found the answer yet, I have decided to start a new thread in the hope someone can help....
Fingers crossed....

- Hi,
Use Prevx as a double check. Work on backing up your data as their could be real disk issues and then
check the disk as above.
This is the error however the SFC did not run completely for some reason.
The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, or you receive an error
message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712"

Check Taurian and my answers in this thread as they will probably fix your issue.

---------------------------------------------------
If needed (which I sort of doubt)
You can go into Control Panel - Windows Updates - Right Click on the UPdate in Question and HIDE it.
If the UPdate continues to try to install use this and especially check method 3 :
---------------------------------------------------
You can use the solutions in this KB - 3 methods and I listed a little help for them below
The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts when you try to
install an update in Windows Vista

Method 1: Start Windows Vista with the Windows installation media, and then use the Repair feature

You can also do a Startup Repair from Safe Mode accessing the Recovery Options if you have them available
or use the DVD as above.

Try StartUp Repair from Recovery Options

Method 2: Start the system in safe mode, and then use the System Restore feature
How to Do a System Restore in Vista
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html
You can also do a System Restore by booting up with a Vista disk.
Method 3: Rename the Pending.xml file, and then edit the registry (This method is part of the advanced troubleshooting.)
See the KB article below for this.
You can use this method on updates that have this issue.

Hide the Update (Right Click - HIDE in Windows Updates) and go to the Microsoft download center to download
and install it.

I would run the Reset here as a precaution.

- Hi,
Below is how to find and eradicate malware - please run Malwarebytes and Prevx to be sure malware is not
part of your issue. If they detect malware then run the entire checklist.
Then backup your data using several methods as this could be signs of hard drive or controller problems.
See the next section on how to thoroughly check the drive.
===================================
Download malwarebytes and scan with it, run MRT, and add Prevx to be sure it is gone. (If Rootkits run UnHackMe)
Download - SAVE - go to where you put it - Right Click on it - RUN AS ADMIN
Malwarebytes - free
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Run the Microsoft Malicious Removal Tool
Start - type in Search box -> MRT find at top of list - Right Click on it - RUN AS ADMIN.
You should be getting this tool and its updates via Windows Updates - if needed you can download it here.
Download - SAVE - go to where you put it - Right Click on it - RUN AS ADMIN
(Then run MRT as above.)

also install Prevx to be sure it is all gone.
Download - SAVE - go to where you put it - Right Click on it - RUN AS ADMIN
Prevx - Home - Free - small, fast, exceptional CLOUD protection, works with other security programs. This is
a scanner only, VERY EFFECTIVE, if it finds something come back here or use Google to see how to remove.

This does sound like hard drive or controller issues and if so they usually just get worse - check here :

- Okay - will give it a go.
For info, the error message from the windows update was:
Error(s) found:
Code 80073712 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
Ran the MRT scan (took some time) - nothing malicious found. - Hi,
