    windows mail tries to connect and then goes to an error at the bottom right hand corner of the page. My internet is working fine.

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forums.

     

     

    We would like to get more information from you, to help troubleshoot your issue. Please answer the following questions as best you can.

     

    ·         When was the last time it was working?

    ·         Do you remember making any changes to the computer recently?

    ·         What is the error message you receive?

    ·         Do you have any security software installed on the computer?

     

     

    First I would suggest that you make sure that you have Windows mail as the default email program on the computer and check what happens.

     

    Though Windows Mail is used as the default e‑mail program by web browsers and other programs that support sending e‑mail, you can choose a different e‑mail program as the default. If you decide you want to change the default e‑mail program back to Windows Mail, you can do so at any time.

     

    1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.
    2. Click Set your default programs.
    3. Under Programs, click on Windows mail, and then click Set this program as default.
    4. Click OK.

     

     

    I would suggest that you reset Windows Mail and check.

    Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.     1.      Close Windows Mail if open.

    2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys together to open Task manager.

    3. Click on the Processes tab.

    4. If WinMail.exe is listed

       NOTE: If WinMail.exe is not listed, then close Task Manager and go to step 5.

    A) Click on WinMail.exe to highlight it and click End Process button.
    NOTE: If you have more than one WinMail.exe listed, then repeat this for each one.

    B) Click on End process button for the confirmation prompt

    C) Close Task Manager.

    5. Open the Start Menu.

    A) In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter.

    B) Click on the Continue button in the UAC prompt.

    C) In regedit, go to: (See screenshot below)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail

    D) In the left pane, right click on Windows Mail and click on Delete.

    E) Click on Yes to confirm the deletion.

    Close Regedit.

     

    6. Open Folder Options and click on the View tab. (See screenshot below)
    NOTE: Folder Options is in Control Panel (click Classic View) or Tools menu in a Explorer window.

    A) Check (dot) Show hidden files and folders.

    B) Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.

    C) Click on OK to apply and close Folder Options.

    7. Open a Windows Explorer window and go to the folder: (See screenshot below)
    C:\users\(username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

    8. Open the Windows Mail folder and Delete all the contents (files and folders) inside the folder. (See screenshot below)
    WARNING: Do not delete the Windows Mail folder itself.
    9. Close this window.

    10. Restart the computer

     

     

    If the above step does not fix the issue would suggest performing clean boot and check.

     

    To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

     

    Perform clean boot and check if you have the issue.

     

       1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

           User Account Control permission

           If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

       2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

       3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

       4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

       5. Click OK.

       6. When you are prompted, click Restart.

       7. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.

    Reset the computer to start as usual

    After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

    Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

     

    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

    On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.

    When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
