Network Printer Help
- I have a kodak 5500 AiO printer. I have vista on all of my computers (1 desktop and 3 laptops). I downloaded sp2 for vista on all the computers, after I downloaded sp2 on the desktop the mouse and keyboard froze, I had to uninstall sp2 to get it to work. Now the printer on my home network will not print or be discovered by my laptops. I can see the printer on the network from my laptops but I can't connect to it. The printer is on the desktop via a usb cable. I have deleted the printer drivers and reinstalled and downloaded the most recent software and drivers for the printer. I need help.
Thanks,
Phil

- Everyone,
This is what I had to do to get my printer working after Vista messed it up. You do the first two steps to the computer where your printer is connected. The last step you do to your laptops or what ever computer you want to connect to the main computer printer. I hope this helps.
Hey all,
We had this same problem..
We had to follow the procedure suggested by Drompa. . .
>>1) Share Permissions
>>1. On explorer, go to C:\windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS
>>2. Right click, Properties
>>3. Sharing tab
>>4. Advanced Sharing
>>5. Check "Share this folder"
>>6. Permissions
>>7. Grant everyone Full Control
>>
>>2) NTFS Permissions
>>1. On explorer, go to C:\windows\system32\spool\printers
>>2. Right click, Properties
>>3. Security tab
>>4. Edit
>>5. Add
>>6. Advanced
>>7. Find Now
>>8. Choose "NETWORK"
>>9. OK
>>10. Grant NETWORK Full Control
AND THEN we had to install as local printers, using the port trick. . .
1. Go to "Printers"
2. click "Add Printer"
3. "Add a Local Printer"
4. "Create a New Port"
5. use the "Local Port" option
6. at "Enter a Port Name" enter: "\\Computername\Printername"
And Hopefully that should do it!
Good Luck!

- Hi bobonuts,
Thank you for using Vista Support forum,
Did you follow this instructions to uninstall SP 2?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948465
The prerelease version of SP2 is time-limited software. You must remove the prerelease version of the service pack before you install the final version of the service pack. Also, this software will no longer operate after May 1, 2010. You must remove the prerelease version of SP2 before that date.
Removing the prerelease version of SP2
To remove the prerelease version of SP2 for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:- Click Start
Collapse this imageExpand this image, copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER:appwiz.cpl
- Click View installed updates.
- Click Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB948465), and then click Uninstall.
- Follow the instructions to complete the removal process.

Did you run the System Restore after uninstall SP 2?
Also try to reinstall printer driver with the latest driver. Same goes for the wireless network adapter driver.
Check system for corruption by running the SFC scan and post the result back in your next reply
Running the System File Checker…
1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.
2. Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.
3. In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:
sfc /scannow
4. You should see the following on-screen messages:
Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification % complete.
5. Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message resembling one of the following:
…found no integrity violations
…found corruption but repaired it
…found corruption that it could not repair
6. Please reply with the completion message that you received.

- Kevin,
Sorry it took so long to respond but I had work. I looked through the vista downloads and I do not have vista sp2 installed. I did do a system restore to delete sp2. I deleted the printer driver and reinstalled the latest driver, i have deleted and reinstalled the wireless network adapter. I also ran the sfc scan and received this message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations". I hope this helped because I am totally dumbfounded.
Thanks,
Phil - Hi bobonuts,
How is the printer connect to the network? Is it through the router or is it shared from one of the computer?
What happen when you try to connect to it? Is there any error message?
I assumed that you already turn on everything in Network and Sharing Center, correct? Did you add permission to the printer for other users from laptops?
Double check these settings listed in this article, uninstall SP2 might reset alot of your settings. Also try disable antivirus/firewall in the meantime to see if it will helps.

The printer is connect through the USB cable of the desktop, so it is shared from one computer. When I try to connect from the laptops I get an error code of 0x00000709. I have turned on everything in the network and sharing center except for the password part. I have added permission to the printer for other users to access the printer. I have disabled my firewall and still no luck. I can see the printer from my network on all the laptops I just can not connect to it. I don't know if this is important but I can't connect to the main hard drive on the desktop, I can connect to all my other drives that are connected to the desktop. This is the error code I receive when I try to connect to the main hard drive
0x80070005. Thanks for your help so far.
Thanks,
Phil - Phil,
The error you are getting trying to connect to the pritner is invalid printer name. Have you deleted the printer from everything - the computer it is connected to and the other computers on the network? If not, you need to delete it from the printers folder, remove all the drivers and software off each computer, reboot all of them, then reinstall the software and drivers, then the printer.
You might also try running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility before you install anything else:

Thanks for that advice but still no luck. I removed the drivers from all the computers and followed the directions as above and no luck. I don't know what else to do. Like I said I am able to see the printer on my network but I am unable to connect.
Thanks,
Phil - Hi Phil,
I think your firewall may be getting in the way.
What are you using for a firewall?

At this time I do not have any firewalls turned on. I have a built in firewall on my home router. I am connected to ATT U-verse. I have bitdefender 2009 total security. I have that firewall as well as the windows firewall turned off. I just did a factory reset on my router. I just can't figure this out.
Thanks,
Phil Phil,
Here is something else to try. The error you are getting trying to connect to the printer is "invalid printer name". So try renaming the printer and then see if the other computers can connect to it:
To rename a printer:
1. Open Printers by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Printers.
2. Click the printer that you want to rename, and then click Rename this printer on the toolbar. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Next to the printer's icon, enter the new printer name.
If that does not work, try adding a new port and installing the printer on a new port.
Let us know if this helps or if you still need assistance.

Tried both no luck.
Phil Hello, Phil
Are you able to print locally on the desktop?
If you can, and this is just affecting the printer sharing, try removing the share and then re-creating it.
We look forward to hearing back from you.

Yes, I can print from the desktop to the local printer. I have tried to stop sharing and re-share without luck. I have no idea what happened after SP2 for vista, nothing worked.
Phil - I just had the same problem and I've tried all of the above. For me, it all began with the latest update (I believe June 9). To fix it, I restored my system as far back as I could and promptly turned off auto updates. I'm going to create a new restore point and then add updates to filter out the one that's causing the problem. MS wanted $59 to talk to them. Forget that and auto-updates. Try the restore and see if the problem magically disappears.
- Hey, you just try installing new drivers at the other computers, and check if it needs password or else
- I tried to roll back the updates with no luck.
- I tried this also.
- bobonuts,
Have you tried turning off User Account Control? Try this and let us know if it works.
We don't recommend turning User Account Control off. If you do turn it off, you should turn it back on as soon as possible.
1. Open User Accounts by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety (or clicking User Accounts, if you are connected to a network domain), and then clicking User Accounts.
2. Click Turn User Account Control on or off. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box to turn on UAC, or clear the check box to turn off UAC, and then click OK.
Let us know if you still need assistance.

This did not solve my problem. Instead, I had to restore my computer to an earlier state. I think these are two separate things. Have you tried a restore?
Yes, I have done a restore to an earlier state.
- Gloria,
No luck.
Phil - Hi Phil,
I read through your thread here, but did not see where you posted your results from running sfc as Kevin suggested. What are the results from checking for corrupted files?. You use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to check and fix system corrupted files. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
I suggest you install Service Pack2 again on the desktop.
Thanks for using the Answers Forum. Please let us know how this works out.

This is the message I received after running SFC "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"
Phil - Hi Phil,
I suggest you start from the beginning as if you are just setting up file and print sharing.
ake sure network discovery and printer sharing are on by following these steps:1. Open Network and Sharing Center by clicking the Start button
, clicking Control Panel , clicking Network and Internet , and then clicking Network and Sharing Center .
2. If network discovery is off, click the arrow button
to expand the section, click Turn on network discovery , and then click Apply .
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. If file sharing is off, click the arrow button
to expand the section, click Turn on file sharing , and then click Apply .
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4. If Public folder sharing is off and you want to share files by placing them in the Public folder on your computer, click the arrow button
to expand the section, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files or Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change, and create files , and then click Apply .
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
5. If printer sharing is off, and you have a printer you want to share, click the arrow button
to expand the section, click Turn on printer sharing , and then click Apply .
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
6. Finally, share the file or printer by doing one of the following:
• Right-click the file or folder you want to share, click Share , click the arrow, select the people you want to share with, and then click Share . For more information, see Share files with someone .
• Copy the files or folders you want to share to the Public folder on your computer. To find the Public folder, click the Start button
, and then click Documents . In the Navigation pane, under Favorite Links , click Public . For more information, see Sharing files with the Public folder .
Do this on all your systems.

All of this has been done. The only other thing I can tell you is that all of the other computers have Vista SP2 installed, I don't know if this makes a difference. The desktop has Vista SP1.

- I was have the exact same problems. I tried everything, then I tried the steps that Bobonuts suggested. Worked like a champ.
I sad that all the other posts from the current support engineers did not work one bit.
Thanks for the post. - I was having a problem with a printer on my new Vista desktop not being able to print on my Windows 7 laptop even though the laptop could "see" the printer. It just wouldn't install the printer and I kept getting an "Access Denied." I had tried absolutely everything under th sun to no avail. But the procedure that Bobonuts suggested worked perfectly when absolutely nothing else had.
- I've tried everything that I've read on every post and nothing's worked. I also had a friend who's a complete computer/network geek try. Nothing ever worked. I did finally fix my problem though. I bought a wireless printer that not only works with my Vista machine, but that I can also print to from my MacBook.
Between my countless hours trying in vain to print from a Vista laptop to a printer connected to an XP machine, Microsoft's refusal to upgrade my laptop to 7 (I missed the window by a month and am therefore stuck with the lemon. Why would I buy an upgrade that costs more than my printer?), and the countless hours I've spent having to relearn Office thanks to the pointless Office 2007 overhaul, I've experienced nothing but disappointment with the company over the last year. I have now moved on to Open Office and my next computer purchase will not involve Windows. You can't even communicate with the company anymore. I'm done with MS until I absolutely have to deal with them again.
Frustrated and perturbed. - I feel the same as BcukFMP. I have been working for over a week now and I finally got the network to share and recognize the new Win 7 laptop and then a few more days of fumbling around with Dell and MS I got the printer driver to load, but still can't get a print to the printer attached to the desktop on the network. I' about through with all of them - Dell and MS!
- Just after posting the above I tried the procedure above from "bobonuts" dated July 19,2009, and my problem with the network shared printing on the Win 7 laptop to an attached printer on the Vista desktop worked. THANK YOU bobonuts!! I have spent many hours trying to get this mess working and thanks to him it is finally over.
- I hate Microsoft. It took 5 minutes to set up a connection to a network printer with Linux, but after 3 different attempts the each took hours, Windows 7 is unable to communicate with a printer that it can clearly locate on the network. Linux is printing without complaints, and Windows 7 still cannot finish the setup. Die and burn Microshaft!
All of the answers I have ever tried FAIL! - Diemsdie,
