    Hi Karen8885,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

    ·         Is it a PPPoE  (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) connection or Always on connection?

    ·         Are you using  any router to connect to internet?

I have few steps which might help you.

    Step 1

To connect your laptop or desktop computer to your wireless network, follow these steps:

    1. Open Connect to a Network by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Connect to.
    2. In the list of networks, click the network that you want to connect to, and then click Connect.
    3. Enter the security key. You can either type in the key or insert a USB flash drive that contains the security key into a USB port on the computer.

    Step  2

To set up a network security key, follow these steps:

Open Network and Sharing Center by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.

1.In the left pane, click Set up a connection or network.

2.Click Set up a wireless router or access point, and then click Next.

The wizard will walk you through creating a network name and a security key.

    Step 3

To turn on Public folder sharing, follow these steps:

    1. Open Network and Sharing Center by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.
    2. Click the arrow button next to Public folder sharing, and then click one of the following options:
      • Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files
      • Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change, and create files
      • Turn off sharing (people logged on to this computer can still access this folder)
    3. Click Apply.

I tried doing the process you gave me. I got all the way to the set-up a wireless router and was told it couldn't configure automatically. I then chose the suggested option of Configuring mannually. Again, I was told to enter a password and username. I have never set these up and have no idea what they are. They don't even give me an option to set them up. It won't let me do anything without these. It just tells me that " User unauthorized". How can I get this password and username? This is my personal computer and I ues it for scholl so I need to get my internet connection protected.

    Christeena,

Since the process of manually configuring a router is different per each router, it's best that you contact the router manufacturer as they'll be able to guide you through the setup process.

    Thanks for using Microsoft Answers!

See my post right above yours...The process is different for each router, it's best that you contact the router manufacturer as they'll be able to guide you through the setup process.
