I have lost the ability to send and receive e-mail using Windows Mail.
- My operating system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Yesterday (5 NOV 09) I lost the ability to send and receive e-mail using Windows Mail. I have been in contact with my ISP (AT&T) and they were unable to solve my problem. They said it may be an issue involving Explorer 8 and Vista. Before I contacted my ISP I discovered that both my incoming and outgoing mail port numbers had changed from their appropriate settings; setting them back to the appropriate settings did not solve the problem.

- Please post the entire errod message, verbatim. Please do not paraphrase.
AT&T bought up a few internet companies, i.e. Yahoo.
Can't help you further until I can see your error message.
If you don't have one handy, send yourself an e-mail, and copy down that error message.
t-4-2 - This is the message on the errors tab of the Windows Mail window:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F US-based free Yahoo accounts have webmail access only, no POP
access. Windows Mail handles POP mail but not Yahoo webmail.
Yahoo's solution is to pay them for premium "Mail Plus" service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/overview/index.html
and use the special settings for that service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-14.html
t-4-2- Your POP settings appear to be correct.
Your SMTP settings should be :
Outgoing (SMTP) server: smtp.att.yahoo.com
"My server requires authentication" must be checked.
Advanced tab,
Outgoing mail port #: 465, secure connection (SSL) checked.
If they all checked out with your own settings, then maybe you have your anti-virus interfers because it is set to scan e-mails ?
If yes, I'd suggest that you disable the e-mail scanning option.
Contrary to other people's belief, 3rd party e-mail scanning is, at best un-necessary, at worst , it will interfer your ability to send or receive e-mails. Your Vista built-in programs are adequate to do the job.
I am unable to locate the article about AV scanning e-mails.
Perhaps this forum's MVPs wouldn't mind voice their opinions ?
t-4-2 - Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your e-mails :

t-4-2 - This is not a US-based free Yahoo account; Its an AT & T account which uses Yahoo. I think my promlem has to do how I'm connecting to my Local Area Network.
