Why did my photos corrupt when switching from XP to Vista?
- I recently bought a new Pavilion p6140f PC with Vista Home Premium installed. When I transferred my photos from my old XP system to it, a large percentage of them appear corrupted. When you go into the folders, at first the thumbnails load up fine (the picture looks fine), but a second later the thumbnail appears corrupted (half shots, discoloration, misalignments). When I click on the picture, it loads up in the corrupted form. I tried clearing the thumbnail cache with the help of HP support, but that did not work. Is there any way of salvaging my photos? It seems that somehow they must be ok since the thumbnails first load up fine then corrupt. Any help would be appreciated.

Just wondering how you transferred the photos to the Vista machine?
John Inzer - MS-MVP - Digital Media Experience- Thanks for responding! I transferred everything I wanted to save through my router. All of my documents, pdfs, files etc seemed to transfer fine except the jpegs. The bmps and gifs transferred fine as well. Roughly 50% of the jpegs seem effected. I have most of my photos backed up on a flash drive, but some of the more recent ones from this summer I don't. (wife has been stalking me with roller pin!) The strange thing is when I load a folder and the thumbnails first appear fine for a brief moment and then corrupt before my eyes. Wouldn't this imply that the photo was transferred uncorrupted, but that the new system just can't see it properly?

Through your router? So I guess you have a network and
you simply copied the files from one system to the other?
Not backed up? Aren't they still on the old XP machine?
Have you tried installing Windows Live Photo Gallery?
http://download.live.com/photogallery
Is your Video Driver current?
Personally, I think I would try copying the files from the
flash drive or burn them on a CD or DVD for transferring.
Anyway...I don't have *the* answer but maybe the following
articles will offer some ideas:

- Thank you very much for the reply, but alas I could not get any of your solutions to work. I tried the Windows gallery, and my drivers were up to date. I'm considering the purchase of a graphics card to replace the integrated GMA 3100 chipset for gaming purposes, but I doubt this will solve the photo problem. The old XP machine is gone. As soon as I transferred all of the data I wanted to save over to the new machine and quickly looked that they transferred without verifying their integrity =>stupid me<=, I reformatted the drive of my old system and reinstalled XP on it. I then gave it to a good friend that was using a VERY old system (only had 256k ram & 40Gb hd on it). Fortunately, I had the majority (just not the last several months) of my photos backed up on a flash drive. I'll keep searching for a solution to fix those missing months. Those thumbnails that 1st appear good then corrupt, make me think that somehow the photo must be ok. Even the HP tech saw it when he was in remote control of my system. It stumped him too. I thank you though for the suggestions you gave. I have learned something very important through all of this; make sure your backups are ok rather than assuming they are. Will the upcoming upgrade to Windows 7 possibly reverse this problem?

I'm sorry to hear the issue has not been improved...I guess you are
viewing your photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery? I would wonder
if there would be any Improvement if you installed a different viewer?
The freeware IrfanView, FastStone Image Viewer and Picasa are all
three excellent software...it may be worth a try install one of them.

- Hi!
I have exactly the same problem, and I require quick response for it. Problems match exactly, but the pictures have moved from XP via flash memory. Only .jpgs are "corrupted". I tried even indexing, but didn't help. I have worked in IT since year 89, and haven't encountred so far problem, which I have not been capable to solve out.... Help! The same problem here. Before I reinstalled the windows xp, I copied all my photos to a cd + to a pen driver, however I didnt copy the Thumbs.db. Im not sure if that is the reason, but since then NEARLY ALL PHOTOS (JPG AND RAW FILES - NEF AND CRW) got corrupted. I´ve tried to open them on the computers from work (Windows and Mac) I´ve tried recovery file softwares, many picture preview software – without success. Photoshop wont recognise any of the files. The windows and Fax Preview says there is no preview available. If anyone knows how to recover my photos please let me know. It seems there is a relation to the thumbs.db file.
Many thanks,

Thumbs.db is not the problem...I always disable that
option and never had an issue because of it.
Just wondering if your photos were tagged?

- Hi John,
Thanks for replying. No, I´ve never tagged any photos. If I try to visualise the info of the corrupted photos on a canon software, for instance, Im able to see the file size (avarage 2MB) but the dimensions of the images are 0x0.

This is a perplexing issue and I regret to say I do not
have the solution.
If you find the fix...please share it with this forum.

I'm back...
Just a thought...no promises but please try the
following experiment.
Download and install the freeware IrfanView.
Open one of your corrupted .jpg files in IrfanView
and resave it in the same format under a new
name. (you can just drag/drop a file on the
IrfanView icon to open it)(then go to...File /
Save As / JPG/JPEG
IrfanView
http://www.software.com/irfanview
(get the plug-ins too)
http://www.software.com/irfanview-plugin
Or...you you could upload one or more of the
corrupted files to the following site and post
the download link here. I would be happy to
experiment with the file/s.
"SendSpace"

Thanks for the links...
I tried all the apps I have and the only one that
recognized the photos was VLC Media Player.
One looks ok and the other is corrupted.
VLC is a video player so all I was able to do was
make screen captures. (info pasted below on how
to do the captures if you would like to experiment)
Here are the screen captures:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/xg0v44
http://www.sendspace.com/file/i35ryb
Sorry, but that's the best I can do...this is certainly
not the solution but it makes me think there is hope
if you happen find the right app for recovering the
photos.
VLC Media Player
http://www.videolan.org/
=====================
VLC Media Player
=====================
To setup for your screen captures...open VLC and
go to...Tools / Preferences / Video button / Video
Snapshots section.
In the directory field...Browse to and select a folder
to save your captures in. (for example...you could
create a new folder on your desktop and select it)
At...Prefix...check the box...Sequential numbering.
At...Format...choose JPEG or PNG.
Finally.....left click the 'Save' button.
Now...Play the video and pause by pressing your
Spacebar when you see a screen you wish to capture.
To capture the screen...type... Shift+S
Press spacebar to advance to the next photo...
ect...etc...
Just drag/drop the files on the VLS Icon and they
should appear in the view screen...then pause the
player and do the capture.
Good luck.

John Inzer - MS-MVP - Digital Media Experience- Hi!
Unfortunately VLC media has once worked, and crashed all the other times since one success. IrfanView works, but doesn't help for corrupted files.
I am looking forward defect correction as soon as possible. I am sure that this problems exist a lot globally, many peoples memories are priceless.
BR IT since 89
