Also, if your sound issue is specific to Windows Media Player and/or Windows Media Center you should follow these steps:
1. Click Start and then type Sound in the Start Search text area.
2. Click Sound in the Control Panel section listed above.
3. Click the Playback tab and click on the picture with a green check mark next to it (should be the default device) so it is highlighted.
4. Click on the Properties button.
5. Click on the Advanced tab.
6. Uncheck the box next to this line: "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device."
7. Click OK.- Proposed As Answer byleandro monteiro da silva Sunday, August 16, 2009 3:33 PM
- I have a similar issue. Before the most recent update, I had sound. Now, I do not.
I am running a Vista Home Premium, 32-bit with Service Pack 1.
My speakers work, I've checked.
My Creative Sound Blaster sound card has the most recent driver.
The audio diagnostic program finds no problem.
I've checked all physical connections.
When I prompt the computer to test my speakers, it is unable to produce a test tone. (Error! Failed to play test tone.)
I checked to see that the Windows Audio service was running. Some people suggested restarting it, which I did.
I have also tried restarting the entire computer.
Have I missed any obvious strategies to regaining my sound?
I'd like to get this fixed soon, if at all possible.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post. - I have exactly the same symptoms as GenericAnonymity, the only difference is that I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit with SP2.
I installed SP2 a while ago and had sound fine, but got a windows update with some Creative software update YESTERDAY and since then have had nothing.
Sound card is Creative SB X-Fi, driver version 6.0.1.1347 which is the latest.
Disabling and reenabling the card through device manager did not fix it.
I ran the MS fix it tool, it said there were no problems.
I checked the connections, which are fine.
I get the same "Error! Failed to play test tone." when I go to Control Panel - Sound - Speakers (default device)- Advanced
Not cured by reboot either.
Am thinking this might well be a compatability thing, but any suggestions much appreciated.
- OK fixed it now.
Uninstalled the driver via device manager. Told it to search for updates on the now-unknown PCI device, which it did and found some older drivers and software, including the Creative Software Autoupdate tool (still had no sound at this point).
Ran the Autoupdate tool and installed the recommended drivers (not the other 250MB of stuff I wasn't interested in).
Asks to reboot, did -> SUCCESS! Audio working again.
Hope that's of some use to you. For all Sound Blaster Users:
Uninstalling all of the existing Creative software and then reinstalling it worked for me when this happened.
Creative Labs has had a lot of problems designing drivers and patches for Windows Vista because of Microsofts stringent requirements. I've experienced a lot of problems using the online autoupdate feature for both windows XP and the autoupdate application in Windows Vista. It seems that these drivers are sensitive to direct installation from the internet and from other programs running in the background. I was successful in installing them after saving these drivers and applications to the desktop.
I have the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro installed on my dual-boot system which supports both Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Creative Labs has a series of downloadable updates for the various sound blaster applications. These new applications have the patches which address the issues you're experiencing. By installing the latest versions of these applications along with the latest driver you may solve these problems. When you go to the Creative Website you need to go to the part where you can enter the model number of your sound card and it will list several updates to your sound card's applications (Using Autoupdate may not list all of the application updates that you need.)
If your system board has on-board audio I recommend that it be disabled or deactived from the boot menu if you are using a sound card (because of conflicts). When I installed Vista service pack two there were no issues with Creative's last driver and latest applications, everything worked fine. Their newest driver didn't install successfully; however, performing a system restore to return to a time before this installation returned everything to normal. The failure occured when my Webroot software initiated an update from the internet, thereby, interfering with the installation process. Downloading and saving the new driver to the desktop and then installing with a clean boot was successful. Creative Labs had finally solved the conflicts with using their built-in decoders for Dolby and DTS surround sound and this has been reintroduced in their latest applications.
I hope that this info helps

Hi,
1. Run the Microsoft fix it tool for the Sound issues after installing SP2 using the following link,
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668690
2. Uninstall the sound driver from the device manager.
3) Do a power cycle on your computer.
Unplug all the devices and remove the battery from the laptop.
Then wait for30 seconds, insert the battery, turn on the computer
then check with the issue.
If the problem still persist get back to Micrsofot Windows Chat using the following link,

- Hi,
Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio - Mine says RealTek High Definition Audio
Write down description make and model - double click on it - drivers tab - write down version. Now
Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers. Then RIGHT
CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.
1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on and RUN AS ADMIN
(This is your fallback.) REBOOT after each driver installation.
NOTE : Sound driver often rollback so check the version after installation and the reboot to see if the version you
installed is there, if not repeat - reboot until it is. It can take several tries depending on how many rollbacks it
does.
Then do same for Device Maker's site.
Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

If you update drivers manually then it is a good idea to disable Driver Installations in Windows Updates,
this leaves Windows Updates ON however it will not install drivers which will usually be older and cause
issues. If Updates suggests a new driver then HIDE it (Right Click on it) and then go look for new ones
manually if you wish.

- You need to update your BIOS .
Goto the HP website
Download the latest BIOS
Run the new BIOS
Remove the Old driver
Reinstall the new driver
Then it should work\
(I suspect the vista sp2 has rearranged the interrupt on some of the hardware device. Then it will cause the Interrupt conflict. Running the latest HP BIOS probably solve this interrupt issue)
Also, don't forget to run your HP update too

- The info I have just posted apply to HP computer only.
insure software consultant - I tried doing this & my headphones still do not work since I downloaded the last service pack. I even went out and bought a new set of headphones which evidently was a waste of money. Is Vista going to fix this problem?
- Hi rcfreilinger,
Please start at the top and work all the way down through the troubleshooter my message 4 up
from this one. Please do not skip any part just because you have done some before as it is often
the total process which solves the issue.
Good luck.
Rob - Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right. - About two months ago my WMC TV audio output stopped working. I have Win Vista 64. Everything else was ok. I have tried countless fixes including reinstalling the drivers. The unchecking advice, above, solved this problem. Thank you!!!!
- Rob,
I updated the Drivers as you suggested in the first paragraph. It found a new version. I rebooted as instructed and that took care of the issue.
Thanks for your help! - Glad to be of help. :)
Rob - Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right. - I still have a problem with my sound. I have Windows Vista 64 and a windows update was applied and my sound became corrupted. I have tried many things and here is a list:
1. Uninstalled sound driver and re-installed it - I am using SigmaTel High definition Audio Codec
2. Used microsofts FixIt programme and that did not work
3. Rolled back the Windows update and that did not work.
The only thing that seems to work is to do a system restore that goes back 7 days but that is not appropriate since I am not sure which particular update is causing the issue and I need to find out how to fix the problem on an ongoing basis without going back 7 days. - Hi,
Make a Restore Point and then use a process of elimination by installing the least likely updates 1st in
Control Panel - Windows Updates - you can uninstall updates on lower left there - Installed Updates
and Uninstall - and afterwards Right Click on an Update and HIDE. Install the least likely Updates 1st -
you can do groups if needed.

Rob - Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right. - I had the same problem
I have Realtek HD Audio Manager.
I went on the Acer website as my PC is from them, found a new install.. took the old one off and pronto...sound!
Much happier now!
