- Hi,
Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio - Mine says RealTek High Definition Audio
(that is an example and yours may have an entirely different name/maker).
Write down description make and model - double click on it - drivers tab - write down version. Now
Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers. Then RIGHT
CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.
1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on and RUN AS ADMIN
(This is your fallback.) REBOOT after each driver installation.
NOTE : Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the reboot to see if the
version you installed is there, if not repeat the install - reboot until it is. It can take several tries depending
on how many rollbacks it does.
Then do same for Device Maker's site.
Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

- Hello Marlee2214,
Thank you for using Microsoft Answers Forums.
Solution:
Try roll back of the drivers that should fix the issue.
The method to restore or rollback a driver to its previous version in Windows Vista is similar to steps perform in Windows XP:
- Click on Windows Start button, then right click on “Computer” and select “Manage” on the right click context menu. If there is any UAC security prompt, click on “Continue”.
- Open Device Manager by clicking on “Device Manager”.
- Expand the hardware component category that placing device with corrupted driver by clicking on the small plus sign next to it. Inside the category, look for the device entry that you want to rollback its driver to previous version.
- Right click on the device, and select “Properties”.
- Select “Driver” tab.
- Click on the “Roll Back Driver” button, and confirm when prompted with dialog box asking if really want to procced to get old driver installed again.
Note: User must logged on as an administrator to rollback a driver update. Beside, if there is no previous version of the driver software installed for the selected device, the Roll Back Driver button will be unavailable (grayed out and disabled).
That should fix the issue for you.
Thank you.

- I have a $4000 computer and I have been 'defending' vista for a while. That is until SP2 !!! I have a very nice computer now without sound. Tried everything. I guess the final solution will be to buy an apple.
- Hi ,
I am working for microsoft products and the best thing which i would suggest you to go to your computer manufacturer web site and check whether you do have any updated drivers or not.
If you will not get the resolution then uninstall the SP2 from the insatlled updates. there might be a situation that you will not be able to uninstal the Sp2 from there then refer the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889743 (For Xp computer) or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537 (For Vista). Then try to check for your sound device and if it will nopt work try to install the latest drivers again.
Once it will start working after uninstall the windows sp then download the Sp on the desktop ( Do not install it directly) create a restore point and then go to the safe mode and install the Sp.
I hoppe you will be able to instal the SP without any problem - Hi,
