No audio output device is installed.
- I have done nothing different to my computer but noticed yesterday that the speaker icon in the system tray has a red and white "X" over it and says that "no audio output device is installed." I have Windows Vista. When I go to my control panel and click on "Sounds and Hardwar," and again click on "Sound," it tells me that "No audio devices are installed." Yesterday I went to --> All programs --> Accesories --> System Tools --> System Restore and I did a system restore that way. After my computer re-started, the audio problem was solved but somehow my anti-virus protection was no longer installed. I fixed this with the McAfee support online chat and the audio was also working all day yesterday. However, today, it again says that "no audio output device is installed," and I do not want to restore my system again and have to deal with the anti-virus software going haywire again. Is there another way to fix this? Please help me. I have looked this up on other support sites and have found the answers too technical for me to understand. I have a one-year-old Toshiba Satellite M205 with an Intel Centrino processer and Vista with Service Pack 1 installed although I don't know if that is important information or not. My computer has a sticker on it that says "Dolby Sound Room," whatever that means. Thanks in advance!

- Hi m_kelsey,
It sounds like you might have an audio driver that isn’t working properly, please do the following:1. Click Start
2. In ‘Start Search’ type Device Manager, press Enter (provide administrative credentials if prompted)
3. Click the “+” next to Sound, video and game controllers to drop down the menu
4. Check the status of any device listed in that category by right-clicking that device, clicking Properties, and then under the General tab check what it says under “Device status”. Let us know what the status was.
5. Then check all the devices (especially any that had a problem under “Device status”) listed in this category for updated drivers by right-clicking that device and then clicking Update Driver Software… (this step may take a moment so be patient).

- Hi, Brian--I am having exactly the same issue as this user, but when I followed your advice and updated driver software, the result was "Windows has determined that your driver software for your device is up to date". Under properties, it says "This device is working properly". But there is a red X over my speaker function, too, and it says "no audio devices installed".

- Hi Brian,Similar issue here. When I have the High Definition Audio Codec installed it give the volume bar, but no sount is coming out and no update is available. This only happened after my SP1 update and I cannot figure out what to do. I attempted to install a SigmaTel Codec, and that put the red X that others have mentioned. I have attempted all of the "fixes" that the support page has mentioned, but to no avail. I need this computers sound to work asap for school/work...please help. Thanks,Brian

- I am having the exact same problem. I uninstalled Norton so I could change my anti virus software and also because it was interfering with itunes and as soon as I restarted I received this message. As with the previous posters I have done everything the other sites have said to do and my devices are working properly. Any other ideas???
- I have the same thing as every one above me. I have recently switched from McAfee to AVG and the sound randomly went out a couple days later. It tells me when I hover my mouse over the sound icon "No Audio Output Device is installed. I know that I have an audio driver and I went in and deleted it and re-installed it. When I tell it to update the driver it says that is already up to date. I would appreciate it if this was answered soon because I have some people that really want sound from this computer.

- I was working on my computer and I came to the conclusion that the hardware just failed. The sound is built into the mother board, so I am replacing my motherboard. It is under warranty so it is worth it. If it wasn't under warranty I suggest just buying a new sound card because that would be a much cheaper fix.
- I'm having the exact same problem as the others. It all started after I installed the critical updates that came out on 6/10/09. I cant play sound but when I I go to device manager and right click on the driver it says its working properly. When I prompt it to update the driver it says it's up to date. Should I do a system restore (at which time I lose all the new updates)?
I'm running Vista Business - I am having the same problem except that I accidentally caused it myself and now can't undo it. I was trying to get a set of USB headphones to work and although the test sounded fine the audio was being forced to the speakers even after I made the headphones the default. So I disabled the speakers thinking it would gray them out and I could re-enable them later. This was not to be though. As soon as I disabled them they went away completely and now I am unable to figure out how to re-enable them. The sound device is built-in and it says the drivers are installed and working correctly but there is no Audio Output device installed. Please tell me where my speakers went and how to get them back. (Running Vista 64-bit)

- I have the same problem! After installing service pack 1 to my computer, the speaker device vanished from my hp laptop. The only audio device available, according to my control panel, is 'headset earphone'. I've tried using my earphone and there's no sound coming out as well. I've tried using the 'Fix It' solution on microsoft and it doesnt solve the speaker and earphone problem. Pls help! Thanks in advance!
- Brian, First let me say thank you for being here for me and others. I have done what you advised and I still have the x on the speaker. What should I do now? Hope to hear from you soon.
- Hi Brian,
Same problem, and I tried everything you said to do. The device status says it's working properly and I updated driver software. But I still have no sound and a note in the bottom right corner of my screen that says, "no audio output device is installed." Please, PLEASE help! Is somebody at Microsoft looking in to this because we tried everything under the sun and no change,it looks that it is happening with a variety of computers or is every body reporting this using hp product ?
- I've got a Dell - so it's not just HP.
- Post your maker - model of computer
IF available Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUND category if there give Description of Device(s) listed along with Driver Dates and Versions.
As example :
Dell - ZX100
Symtel HD Audio ZPS1211 12-25-2006
Also try this - Start Tab - in search box type - Services - CLICK on Services at top -
then Windows Audio - double click - START and AUTOMATIC
Windows Audio EndpointBuilder - double click - START and AUTOMATIC
Rob - Supporting Member, Cascade Bicycle Club P.O. Box 15165 Seattle, WA. 98115-0165 206-522-3222 and 24 hr hotline 206-522-BIKE http://www.cascade.org - Another Solution : Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio Mine says RealTek High Definition Audio
Yours could be by Symtel or other makers. DELETE it - OK out and reboot. Windows will re-install the driver you have.
NOW go back into to Device Manager - SOUND Write down description -
then DOUBLE CLICK on it DRIVER TAB - write down Maker's Name - Driver Version and Date.
Go to maker's site and look for latest driver.
DO NOT run the look update drivers in device manager, this always finds old ones as MS is way behind certifying drivers.
Mine is :
Realtek High Definition Audio (Yours could be one of several companies)
Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

- Now that you have the right driver there are probably more options in the locations listed above.
Right Click Speaker Icon
Control Panel - Sounds
Control Panel - look for any Audio Managers or similar Icons
Device Manager - Sounds - some drivers have settings here though its rare these days.
Also double check your programs as there might be functions that work a little different now that you have the right driver.
BTW also Check CONEXANT for an even newer driver.
Rob - Supporting Member, Cascade Bicycle Club P.O. As far as going to the device manager it shows no sound gaming devices. I have researched this problem for 5 days now and discovered it is widespread and nothing is being done to help the many users who have this problem.

- Hi,
Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio Mine says RealTek High Definition Audio
Write down description make and model - double click on it - drivers tab - write down version. Now
Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers. Then RIGHT
CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.
1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on and RUN AS ADMIN
(This is your fallback.) REBOOT after each driver installation.
NOTE : Sound driver often rollback so check the version after installation and the reboot to see if the version you
installed is there, if not repeat - reboot until it is. It can take several tries depending on how many rollbacks it
does.
Then do same for Device Maker's site.
Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

Rob - Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right. - I, too, have the same problem. I have a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7414
- Proposed As Answer byJ Chavez Tuesday, November 17, 2009 3:47 PM
- Hi,
Toshiba Support probably has drivers for Windows 7 and updated Vista ones also as well as many of the
drivers will be updated and available at the Device maker's sites.
Click on Product Support on upper left and navigate to your model.
Toshiba Support
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp
-------------------------------------------------
Update your drivers manually by looking at System maker and Device maker's sites.
This is my generic how to for proper driver updates :
This utility makes it easy to see which versions are loaded :
DriverView - Free - utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system. For
each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver, description,
version, product name, company that created the driver, and more.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html
For Drivers check System Maker as fallbacks and Device Maker's which are the most current.
Control Panel - Device Manager - Display Adapter - write down the make and complete model of your
video adapter - double click - Driver's tab - write down the version info. Now click UPdate Driver (this
may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers) - then Right Click - Uninstall - REBOOT
this will refresh the driver stack.
Repeat that for Network - Network Card (NIC), Wifi, Sound, Mouse and Keyboard if 3rd party with their
own software and drivers and any other major device drivers you have.
Now go to System Maker's site (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) (as rollback) and then Device Maker's site
(Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI as examples) and get their latest versions. (Look for BIOS, Chipset and software
updates at System Maker's site while there.)
Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - Right Click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after each installation.
Always check in Device Manager - Drivers tab to be sure the version you are installing actually shows up. This
is because some drivers rollback before the latest is installed (sound drivers particularly do this) so install a
driver - reboot - check to be sure it is installed and repeat as needed.
Repeat at Device Makers - BTW at Device Makers DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER - check manually by model.
Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

If you update drivers manually then it is a good idea to disable Driver Installations in Windows Updates,
this leaves Windows Updates ON however it will not install drivers which will usually be older and cause
issues. If Updates suggests a new driver then HIDE it (Right Click on it) and then go look for new ones
manually if you wish.

- Hi im having problems with my DELL Inspiron 6000. I cannot find SOUNDS or the HD Audio in device manager. CAn you please help me out?
- SpiritX: I have an HP Pavilion DV5030US . This computer has a Conexant AC97 sound device. Everything on my computer worked perfectly until I installed Windows 7 64-bit. I have tried every fix you have recommended on this forum. Nothing has worked. I have downloaded drivers from Conexant and from HP., I have tried a work-around recommended on a forum for Vista 64-bit. I have uninstalled and rebooted. I have run the Fix-it on Microsoft's web site. The answer I got from that service is that "No driver exists for your device." According to Windows, no device is installed or recognized. But it's there. It worked perfectly until i installed W7. It is simply unacceptable that my answer is "Sorry, you're screwed," which appears to be what is being suggested.
I am not a novice. I've been working on computers since 1979, and beta-tested Windows 0.1, 2, 3, 95, 98, Me, XP, and 7. (by the way, the audio worked perfectly on Windows 7 RC, build 7100. Now there seems to be nothing I can do to get sound in Windows 7 64-bit. This is unacceptable. I purchased three copies for my home computers, and I am now reluctant to install the other two copies. This operating system has messed up my computer--the opsys also doesn't recognize my modem, a mass-storage controller, and an "unknown device," which, I believe, is my printer.
You're repeating your message several times in this forum is patronizing, and worse, wrong. The computer now doesn't even recognize working hardware in the machine. I know this because when I boot up to Linux from a memory stick, the sound is there. What's going on? - Hi,
The troubleshooter works in most cases. It was never meant to apply to a situation such as yours so
I am sorry for the confusion. If a driver does not exist then obviously can't install it.
Well it sounds like there is no driver for Windows 7, have you checked with the actual device maker?
Often there will be drivers however they will not be listed under your model and might be found under
a later model with same device. An AC97 device might not be supported at all though.
Disable your on-board Sound - Settings (BIOS/CMOS) as you boot.
Buy an add-in card (preferred) or a USB sound adapter making sure either supports Windows 7 and 64 bit.
Not only will your sound work it should be improved.
If you want to try to use your existing sound (not my choice).
No Windows 7 drivers yet? Try using Vista’s

Did you orginally run the upgrade advisor? I would definitely do that on the other machines. And if in doubt
go look for drivers before you upgrade.

Rob - Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right. - Hmmmm, I've had 3 brand spanking new machines go down on audio. I accidentally did it tonight myself after installing aftermarket PCI sound cards on every one of them. M'F'ing IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the speakers start blasting in the middle of the night. (Just installed windows 7). I've got the headset on and am SHOCKED. Right-click disable device by reflex. Audio device onboard, instantly undetectable by the system ANYF***WHERE, except for a right click in the audio playback devices. "Show disabled devices". It wasn't until I did this myself that I knew how it was happening and figured out the fix.
I just knew when I found it, it would be stupidly simple. 2 audio cards later. How about just graying out the device with a check-box, hmmm? Instead of having the audio device disappear off the planet windows? Just RClick. Makes me sick.
Hope that's your problem cause it's the easiest fix in the world and I'll be checking it out on the other machines tomorrow. Sorry for the harsh words, been working on that one for too long. Took me doing it to myself to spot it. I THANKYOU VERY MUCH I HAVE SOUND NOW.THANKS AGAIN.

- hi brian
ive read and followed your instructions to m kelsey about the audio output advice, i am haveing the same problem when i accesed the properties menu for the sound video and game controls the device status box reads"no drivers are installed for this device" ive tried update the driver but when it automatically searches for devices online it replies saying"the best driver for your device is already installed" is there any other solutions to this problem? Hi richard54,
Updating your driver in Device Manager that way only finds old certified drivers and MS is far behind
in that process. Please see my message of Wednesday, September 30, 2009 1:27 AM above.
Those methods have a high success rate in helping to solve this issue.Hope this helps.

- I had this same problem and after doing some hard research, several hours later.. trying to go to my manufactor and trying to install old drivers from my old xp, and vista cd's and no luck, I simply went to cnet's websited for download and searched: SigmaTel4487.exe - SigmaTel Audio Driver Version: 5.10.4487
Installed it and just like that, my speakers were once again recognized and I I saw them plugged in, I was on the verge of buying a new sound card since my current configuration is a sound card intergrated with my motherboad. I actually bought one of the ebay USB sound cards for $4 as a last resort, too bad I wont get to use it anymore and I already wrote those few dollars off as a lost cause and I have not even receive the usb card. Ohh well, you live an learn. This was the only issue I had with windows 7, the no sound problem. Other than that, my experience has been great and I will still recommend it. I hope this helps some of you out there, enjoy! - Hi,
That is a fairly old version of the driver - what make and model computer do you have? (Dell?)
See if this applies to you. You can make a Restore Point so it is easy to revert back.
Update your Dell SigmaTel audio driver

Search for Sigmatel on Dell - found many newer versions.

Thank you - Dana - I have the same problem! had sound last nigth. there was a vista update and this morning no sound. No Audio Output Device. I did the above and and drive is up to date.
Got this error msg.
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
Please Help
Ryan - Hi RagganBoBaggan,
Use this method to load the drivers :
Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio - Mine says RealTek High Definition Audio
(that is an example and yours may have an entirely different name/maker).
NOTE : Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the reboot to
see if the version you installed is there, if not repeat the install - reboot until it is. It can take
several tries depending on how many rollbacks it does.
Then do same for Device Maker's site.
Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

Also Right Click Speaker near clock - Playback Devices - right click in the box area - check
Show disable and disconnected devices. Highlight speaker and on the lower Right click Properties
check settings for Device Usage enabled and so on. Also do same for Configure on Lower Left of
that box.
In Control Panel you can also look for an Audio Manager along with the Sound Settings.
