Windows Media Center Freezing on Vista
- The issue is I am having that Windows Media Center freezes video. The program itself continues to function without pause or delay, there is no lag in regular system function or in windows media center navigation. The video simply freezes. I have tested with different videos of different file extentions, WMV, RM, RMVB, AVI, MPG, MPEG, MP4, and MOV. The first movie I play will run fine, no issues. As soon as it ends, it will not start another movie, nor will it allow me to change what I am currently watching. Whatever is in the middle of playing will simply freeze as soon as I click the new video, and all video playback (along with sound) will freeze.
If there is anything useful I may add, simply let me know. Thank you.
I am running a copy of windows vista ultimate, I have all updates, checked right before making this post.
I am using the K Lite full software pack, newest version installed right before making this post.
System Specs: AMD Dual core 2.4ghz, 4gb ram, 256mb geforce videocard
All of this occurred after the installation of a new slave hard drive. Went from 500gb to 1tb.

Hi Cascadeorca,
Thank you for writing to Microsoft Answers Community Forums.
Run system file checker to check for corrupted system files:
To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.Try updating the display adapter to the latest version of the driver available.
You can also check for third party program or driver interference by doing a clean boot.
Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.)
On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
Click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart.
Log back into your Account.
Test your video issue.
If the problem does not return while your computer is in clean boot mode, a background program is likely causing interference. You might have to update the program or uninstall the program for this program to work. You can try to determine which background program is causing the problem while the computer is in clean boot mode.

To find the process or program at cause follow the steps starting at enable half of the Services items, from the following article:
How to perform a clean boot procedure to determine whether background programs are interfering with a game or a program that you currently use

To restore your Normal startup:
Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.)
On the General tab, click Normal Startup.
When you are prompted, click Restart.
Hope this helps.

- Hi,
I also have the same problem, and you solutions didnt help.
Any more ideas ??
Cheers
Jeff - Hi, Jeff.
What might your system specs be?
Do you have K-Lite (or any other codec pack) installed? If so, what version?
Does your issue affect all video filetypes, or only a few? What filetypes (extentions) are involved?
New issue, or always been there? If it's a new issue, have there been any changes to the computer (hardware change, driver update(s), software installation(s)) that have occured between "it worked" and now?

I have the same problem as Jeff and Cascadeorca since a month or so. Before I didin't have any problems. I changed nothing to my computer, didnt do any software, nor driver updates except for automatic windows updates.
I run the latest K-lite pack. The freeze occurs at all types of video except for my tv recordings.
Could this problem be related to installation of windows service pack? If so how to solve this problem? Should I remove all of my windows updates to identify the issue?
thanks for your help.
Pieter- I started getting the same issue recently. I will be watching a movie and everything just freezes and my stereo will make a repeating pulse noise. Pressing esc. or 'alt, cntrl, dlt' will not do anything. I have to turn PC off manually. I have windows vista on a dell xps. Personally i think its vista. This program ran fine for the first year i had my computer and it just starts doing weird things. Will upgrade to windows 7 soon.
