Hmm. There is only one other thing that I can think of: perhaps some files in windows are corrupted. Fortunately, there is a handy test for this:

Open the start menu and type "cmd" into the search box.

Place your mouse over the "cmd.exe" entry that appears, and right-click.

    Choose "Run as adminstrator".

Follow the prompts (you may need an administrator's password, if you aren't on an adminstrator's account), until the black window with white text appears.

    Type (without quotes) "sfc /scannow".

Press enter. Let the scan run, it may take some time.

Windows will check all your system files to make sure they aren't corrupted. If it does find problems, it will try to fix them. It may ask you to insert your windows disc. It may ask you to restart your computer.

    Let us know the results.

:( I was hoping the solution would be easy.

From here, we have three different paths to explore:

    1. There is something wrong with Internet Explorer and/or IE is missing a neccessary component/plugin/addon.

    2. There is something wrong with your audio driver or with Windows.

    3. There is something wrong with either your sound card, your speakers, or some other item of hardware in your computer.

First, lets explore option 1: something wrong with Internet Explorer.
Perhaps one of the addons you usually use in IE is interfering with the ability to play sound:
To check this, try running IE without addons:
    1. Open the Start Menu, type "Internet Explorer" into the search box. This search should return at least two results.
    2. Click on the "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)" option.
    3. Navigate to a page where you know sound should be heard.
    4. Did you hear sound? If yes, we can do further troubleshooting to determine exactly what addon is causing the problems. If no, continue on to the next step.

Perhaps you don't have the right plugins/addons installed to play sound. Commonly needed plugins for interactive media include:
    1. Adobe Flash
    2. Java.

To install these plugins, open Internet Explorer and visit the links above. Follow the directions on the pages listed. After installing these plugins and restarting Internet Explorer, do you hear sound?

If not, perhaps you have sound turned off in Internet Explorer's advanced settings.
    To check:
    1. Open IE. Go to Tools> Internet Options.
    2. Switch to the "Advanced" Tab.
    3. Scroll down to the "Multimedia" sub-heading.
    4. Make sure the box next to "Play sounds in web pages" is checked. Click "ok". Restart Internet Explorer. Test to see if sounds will now play.

Let us know how it goes.

It is possible that Internet Explorer has been selectively muted in the Volume Mixer.

    To check this:

Open Internet Explorer, preferably to a page that should be playing some sound.

Click on the volume icon in the windows system tray (in the right-hand lower corner of the taskbar), and then click on the link labeled "Mixer".

A panel will open showing the individual volume levels of all running apps that play sounds (you may need to scroll to the right to see all of them).

Make sure that the volume level belonging to Internet Explorer is not set to mute.

Please let us know if this solves the problem.

Hi Bookworm,  Thanks for your response, I've tried what you suggested, and it doesn't show muted, It shows two devices in the mixer, one speakers, which i'm assuming is from usb port or media player and one shows applications windows sounds I've muted and unmuted them but still no sound from internet pages.   It's really strange because it just suddenly stopped without warning about a month ago.

I am having a very similar problem, I do not get the typical sound made by Vista after booting my laptop. Nor is there any sound from any browser.

    However, WMP is working fine.

Hi Bookworm Dragon, thanks for getting back to me once more.... I have tried all your suggestions, I updated to adobe 10 and Java was already installed and up to date... I checked options in multimedia and the sound box is checked.... I'm still getting no sound.
this has really puzzled me as I can't for the life of me think what I could have done to have this happen.

Another possiblity is that your sound driver is corrupted in some way.
You can test this by updating to the latest drivers. Go to your computer manufacturer's website and search for the latest drivers for your computer.

Alternativly, you can try using the windows Generic driver instead:

Step 1: Determine what driver your computer is currently using: Hover your mouse over the volume icon in taskbar system tray.
A balloon should appear, showing information about your sound system: Master Volume Level, Device Type, and the Driver you are using.
If the last line says "Realtek High Definition Audio", you are using the Realtek driver and will need to switch to the Generic Windows driver.
If the Balloon instead says something like "High Definition Audio Device", you are already using the Generic Driver.

Step 2: Create a Restore Point: If you change your mind and want the Realtek Driver back, you can use this Restore Point to undo your changes. There is a good tutorial on how to create a restore point here

Step 3: Uninstall & Delete the Realtek Driver:
Open the Control panel (Start> Control Panel).
    Click on "Hardware and Sound".
Click on "Device Manager". You will need to have an Administrator's Account to access this.
A list of all devices on Computer should appear, as shown below:

Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" category.
The Realtek Driver should be listed as shown above.
Right-click on the Realtek entry and choose "Uninstall" from the menu.
A dialog box like the one shown below will appear:

Make sure that the box next to "Delete Driver Software for this Device" is checked. This is important. If you don't delete the Realtek Driver, Windows will simply reinstall it. (If you wish to uninstall and reinstall the Realtek driver for troubleshooting purposes, uncheck the box.)
    Click Ok.
Windows will prompt you to restart your computer. Do so.

Step 4: Installing the Generic Driver:
When your computer starts back up, once you've logged in, you may receive an error message stating that the Audio Control Panel Applet is no longer working. Ignore it.
After a few moments, Windows should begin automatically installing the driver for your "new" device.
When it is finished, hover your mouse over the system tray icon again and you should now see "High Definition Audio Device" in the Driver line.
If Windows does not automatically install the driver, return to the Device Manager, right-click on any list entry, and choose "Scan for Hardware". Windows should then find the Audio Device and automatically install the Generic Driver for it.

If you change your mind or find that this does not solve your problem, you can always use the restore point you made to return to the Realtek Driver. Or you can reinstall the Realtek Driver using the Driver CD that came with your computer.

    Best Wishes,
    BookwormDragon

    Hi again BookwormDragon,
Thanks so much for all you help and suggestions, I have tried the scan and it came up with " Windows resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log  For example C:\Windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log. "  ..... when i typed that into the search I got Access denied.
I have come to the feeling that I may have to take all my work off and restore back to factory setting and start all over.
    Kindest Regards

Well, now would be a good time for someone a little more experienced then me to chime in, lol.

While I have used sfc often in the past, I have never come across errors that it hasn't been able to repair. Anyone else know what the next step should be? Is there a way to repair the system without restoring to factory settings?

    Please do go on.....
I am having all the very same problems and am trying all the same solutions right along with you.

What next?  Do I really have to start from scratch?

In addition to the no sound on webpages.... I am also getting little red x's where picture icons should be.  I can see photographs, but not, for example, MSN little images on webpages.

The sound on some webpages disappeared first.... I tried to fix by uploading Internet Ex. 8 and then lost the pic icons too!

    Any more ideas from anyone????????

When you upgraded to IE8 from IE7 is this when the problems occurred?

Just a couple few more things to try I didnt see mention

    Go to Internet Options
    Click the Advance Tab
    Click Restore Advance Settings

IF that doesn't work try also try

    Go to Internet Options
    Click the Advance Tab
    Click Reset

Please read the following in which it includes it resets if your ok with that then proceed to reset then close Internet Explorer and reopen  here's a quick link you can go to to test if you hear sound http://www.microsoft.com/windows/possibilities/protecting-pc.aspx

Also if you have another user account available can you check and see if it does it under that account as well?

Let me know is any of this helps.

I understand that you are having problems with you IE. Please follow these steps to correct the problem.

    1. You will need to uninstall Adobe Flash Player first. You can't do it by simply disabling the software you will need a tool to complete this job. Use this link to download the tool.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

    2. Install and run the adobe removal tool.

    3. Restart your computer when prompted. ( Remember to close all windows ie. Explorer, mozilla, google chrome.) before trying to uninstall adobe flash player.

    4. Run CCleaner temp file cleaner to remove any files that may slow your computer down. Run CCleaner Reg. Cleaner (be sure to back up your reg. before running the cleaner so you may roll back if you experience problems. You may download a free copy of CCleaner from.
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download

    5. Download a clean install of Adobe Flash player. http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=DXLUJ

Bam, You should be set to go now. Please respond to this to let me know if your problem has been corrected.

    Hi Ladybudda,

Thanks for responding with this information.  I was really hoping that it would work, but when I followed this instructions, the file "wavemapper" already existed in my registry and it already had the correct data value. :(

Also, I think the link you posted was to the UK MS support, so I don't know if it will be useful for me.  I think I actually have found the free MS support for here, and I put in a request today, so hopefully I will get a response and resolution soon.

Thanks again and I'll let everyone know once I've gotten a reply.

This is the link to the support page for Vista Service Pak 2 update issues:

    https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?iid=25&iguid=10357fd3-0853-4902-acaf-832f2072e939_1_2&ln=en-us&tzone=420

Unfortunately, after a prompt initial response from someone on the support team and some instructions on possible solutions (including resetting some of my sound options and downloading 2 different third party audio codecs), the last e-mail I received advised me to check and make sure that the sound scheme was set to "Windows Default"...AARRRGGGHHH!!!!! Like that wasn't the first thing that I checked?????

But try it out for yourself and see where it gets you.  Maybe if enough people contact them directly they will actually send out an update to fix the problem.

Just wanted to add my voice to those who are having the same problem.  Opened a new thread (maybe should have just continued this one).  This is clearly a common problem but not big enough yet to get MS's attention?

What is absolutely mind-boggling to me is that this has been going on since at least March...and yet no one here, or apparently at Microsoft has any clue how to fix it!?!?!?!?

Ok I too have a toshiba A205 with the same sound issues and it appears that our sound issues have something to do with a trojan virus. I have read on the Toshiba website of others having this problem and this virus seems to be the connecting factor. My spysweeper found a trojan the other day and I deleted it. Upon doing that it appears that it took part of the sound with it. I am not sure how it did it but it did. The others have read about have said the same thing. One said that if you can restore your computer back before you ran your sweep your sound will come back. Sweep again then before you delete the trojan restore the "aud" file. I have not tried this as for some reason my restore points have been wipped out. I guess this is where MS might be able to tell us how to restore this deleted part from our sound files.

Lost Sounds after Trojan Removal of 'trojan-pws-daonol' - this can be found on Toshibas forums on their website. Apparently this is the affecting virus

Hi all.  I tried the cmd.exe - sfc /scannow solution suggested above and it fixed my problem (at least I think this is what fixed it).  This is a big deal as I had tried a lot of different things suggested on this site and others.  Reboot right after you run it.  Worked for me.

    CargoCultFan!!!

Thanks for reminding us of that fix. I had blown it off because Ladybudda had run into problems with it, but I ran the scan and my sound is back. Now I don't have to dump my PC in a lake!

I just saw this and dang! This thing is everywhere. I too have a similar problem and will try the solutions for internet explorer 7. One other thing happened to mine. The video not only has no sound on internet, but videos that are on my computer have no sound either. Just wanting to know if the two are connected and if there is a different solution to video saved on the computer.

P.S. if any one is wondeering, it is pronounced "Ya-min-ah-kigh" and roughly translated, it means darkness in Japanese.

I tried that too and it did the trick. I guess video and internet sounds were connected somehow because now they work.

I had the same problem and contacted Microsoft in the UK. They came back with the following suggestion. I tried it and it worked for me.

Please find steps to resolve the issues.

    Step 1:

    ========================================================================================

    - Close all programs.

    - Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    - Click Uninstall a Program under the Programs category

    - In the Tasks pane, click View installed updates.

    - In the list of installed updates, double-click Windows Internet Explorer 8.

    - In the Uninstall an update dialog box, click Yes.

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    - Follow the instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.

    - When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.

For more information on how to remove IE8 please check the following link:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

    Step 2:

    =======================================================================================

    - Open the start menu and type "cmd" into the search box.

    - Place your mouse over the "cmd.exe" entry that appears, and right-click.

    - Choose "Run as administrator".

    - Follow the prompts (you may need an administrator's password, if you aren't on an

Administrator's account), until the black window with white text appears.

    - Type (without quotes) "sfc /scannow".

    - Press enter. Let the scan run, it may take some time.

    Step 3:

    =======================================================================================

You can also find these steps on our support website http://www.microsoft.com/uk/support and the article # is 957700

I tried doing this, but I don't have a Sound, video and game controllers option.

It does from Processors straight to Storage Controllers.

Please help, this is awfully frustrating.

If you have tried just about all of the options above, you could try thses as a last resort. Try running a System Restore and set it to a date when it worked ok if you can remember. Before doing so, have you tried to get updates for oyur computer? Sometimes getting a few updates installed should help. Also if the Support team can't seem to help you, contact the manufactor of your computer to see if they know why you don't have the option.

I had this exact same problem for 2 months and finally (after trying about 25 other fixes) a solution that worked.  I thought I had uninstalled and reinstalled before, but using this tool it worked this time.  Thanks soooo much MistaRaw.

My problem is somewhat similar to an earlier thread:  "HELP!! No Sound from Internet Explorer/ Sound from Media player ok ...", but I do have sound in IE (7) and Win Media Player works, but some apps do not make the sounds they are supposed to.  These include Quicken (2009 Deluxe, rel. R4) and Outlook (2002) and, interestingly enough, two PIMs I downloaded and tried as replacements for Outlook, EfficientPIM and EssentialPIM, both of which are very similar to each other and to Outlook.
I am running Vista Home Prem. (64-bit) on a new Dell XPS 435T machine.  The problem has existed for about a month now.  This is to ask if this problem has a simple solution before I try the many things suggested in the abovementioned thread.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.

    Hello.

Thank you for choosing Microsoft answers forums for Windows Vista.

Unfortunately, we would also suggest you the similar steps.

Please try those steps and check.

If nothin helps, you can try an online virus scan:

Some malware/spyware/virus that is out on the Internet, will also change system settings, corrupt data, and log invalid registries that will also make annoying errors, as like the ones you are encountering.  You can try a virus scan. Just keep in mind that if your system does contains a virus, the active virus can try to keep the system from installing/using the virus scan correctly. Online Virus scans (sometimes) will not have that problem.

http://onecare.live.com  - OneCare is Microsoft's Virus Scan.  You can attempt using the OneCare Safety Scanner. That is OneCare's online Scanner. Somtimes it will not launch properly if your system is not under a specific ordinance.

Use the below link to perform a online full service scan on the computer:

    http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

    Hope this information is useful.

    Regards,

    Savan – Microsoft Support.

I cannot believe Microsoft has not fixed this bug as it is obviously an issue that is widespread and -for many people- still remains unsolved!!  I have the same exact problem as the OP (only different computer: Lenovo X60 tablet PC) and have been searching the web for solutions to this sound issue for nearly a year now!

I had the same result to the one proposed fix: "....start menu and type "cmd"..."  into the search box (the result had something to do with CBS.com & was presumably fixed -but sound still not working)

Will try all the other suggestions posted here, and if still no fix, i will keep coming back here as there are far more responses & fixes proposed in this forum than in any others i've visited....

Until then, Miscrosoft: pleeeeeeeease set up some sort of easy fix to this problem so that all others experiencing this same problem may have it fixed already!

Oh, also: i tried replying to this thread several times and after logging in, i was continually re-routed to some Bing.com page and was not allowed to return to this thread.  I finally was able to post here by clicking on "reply" on a random post within the middle this thread.  (I could not reply to the first or last post)

    **sigh**

BIG thanks to all those who come here to share their knowledge & assistance!

I have been having the same issues for a couple months and have tried everything. I can hear sound when I play iTunes but no sound on the internet.   I have tried all the suggestions in the other replies and nothing worked. The one main problem that I have come across is that I no longer have adobe flash player.  I have been trying to download it for about 4 days now and nothing.  For some reason it makes my internet explorer completely freeze up and do nothing.  I am running Windows Vista SP2, just FYI.  So maybe check that out.  I ran Internet Explorer (no add ons) as suggested in a previous post and had tried to download it that way and the same thing. I keep having to use the Task Manager and shut down Adobe because it freezes everything up.   I would absolutely love it if someone had the magic answer.  It's making me crazy!!

Have you tried it on other internet browsers like FireFox? If you are using Internet explorer 8, get rid of it, it is useless since the interface is not organized as well as it was in explorer 7. I wouldn't recommend using Google chrome because it has some compatibility issues with Macro flash/adobe flash player for some reason.

This is the main step that worked for me because my audio codec file was damaged:

Open the start menu and type "cmd" into the search box.

Place your mouse over the "cmd.exe" entry that appears, and right-click.

    Choose "Run as adminstrator".

Follow the prompts (you may need an administrator's password, if you aren't on an adminstrator's account), until the black window with white text appears.

    Type (without quotes) "sfc /scannow".

Press enter. Let the scan run, it may take some time.

Now again, if this step or any of the others don't work, try Best Buy and see what they think. I believe it may be a sound card problem. Maybe it is damaged or out of date and can't take any more updates. I am not sure fo now, but occasionally, when my fire fox crashes, some how it affects all of my audio so if I play a song, nothing happens, no videos load what so ever. The simple solution to that is just to restart and if the start up sound doesn't play, sound is still messed up and you have to restart again until it plays the log in sound, then sound is back to normal.

Sorry people, but that is all i can think of to fix that annoying sound problem.
